I couldn't go to sleep until I had written this outline. It's yours now, I don't want it.
Merlin – a young Welsh backpacker who is the freshest hire on the biggest canola farm in Australia. After he got arrested at a climate protest, his mum packed him off to stay with her relation and out of trouble. Said relation is

Dr. Gaius – Head of Operations at Camelot. One Wednesday morning, Merlin turns up his doorstep and promptly starts to make his vast workload look easy compared to managing a strong-willed teenager. He left Wales decades ago to seek work and has been with Camelot Enterprises since it was only a hundred hectares. He has a tenuous but longstanding friendship with

Uther Pendragon – fabulously wealthy owner of Camelot Enterprises. 20 years ago, he was found guilty of using toxic pesticides in a scandalous trial, but his wife died in childbirth shortly after and her estate allowed him to pay his fines with plenty left over to continue doing as he please. Lately, that includes chipping away at the national park that borders his property. Now that he’s getting older, he’s hoping that his business will be taken over by

Arthur Pendragon – Co-Administrative Assistant at Camelot Enterprises. A recently returned graduate of Knox Grammar School. Though he’s feeling the pressure from his dad, he currently spends most of his time mucking about with his regularly visiting school chums and sending snarky text messages back and forth with

Morgana Gorlois – primed to be CEO of a rival canola farm after the death of her father, until the Gorlois property was unexpectedly acquired by Camelot Enterprises. However, she retains a level of influence as a Co-Administrative Assistant. She and Arthur grew up together, but she’s being forced to reconsider her relationship with him as he becomes her professional rival. His desire not to rock the boat regarding his father’s agricultural practices up against her keen environmentalism is a source of friction too. Luckily, Morgana can talk everything over with her beloved friend, the Deputy Employment Supervisor. . .
Gwen Smith – Deputy Employment Supervisor and right-hand woman to Morgana Gorlois. Gwen is a brilliant young woman who is quickly rising through the ranks, but she likes being DES because she can have her ear to the ground whilst keeping her eyes on the sky. As a born-and-bred local, she’s seen the damage unsustainable farming practices cause but she also reckons that making meaningful change at Camelot is going to require playing the long game. However, both Morgana and Gwen’s new employee- a young Welshman who hears “Cheers, big ears” every time he goes to the pub- are inclined to take a more direct path.
When Merlin saves Arthur from a runawawy John Deere, Uther makes him Arthur’s personal assistant and unknowingly sets his business on a course that none of them could see coming

Coming to a fanfiction website near you.
STOP IT HAHAHAHA I LOVE YOU. Not Knox 😭😭 EW that’s so funny. Gwen knows her sustainable crop rotations- Ag science BADDIE
Arthur making Merlin do the stupidest little jobs for the sake of data and research (getting rid of him) like counting fucking canola seeds to determine time for windrowing (I’ve been personally victimised by this).
Merlins there for punishment and in his shitty accom he meets Gwaine and Lancelot who are doing their 88 days for their visas LMAO it’s all coming together
Arthur drinks bundy cans. I don’t make the rules he’s the type. Except when he’s at home then he sips his dad’s whiskey.
WAGGA WAGGA ROMANTICS EVERYBODY (statistically the Riverina produces the most canola in NSW so this actually fits too hahaha)

Tell the EPA: Protect America’s Children. Ban Brain-Damaging Chlorpyrifos Insecticide.
Tell the new EPA administration to do what the EPA proposed in 2015. BAN CHLORPYRIFOS NOW. REVOKE ALL tolerances for food and animal feed.
Public comment period ends Monday, March 24, 2025 at 11:59PM ET. The pre-written comment text is editable. Please make it your own or send it as-is.
BRIEF HISTORICAL BACKGROUND ON CHLORPYRIFOS
Major studies from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, UC-Davis, and Columbia University have found strong evidence that low dose exposure to chlorpyrifos in the womb or after birth inhibits children’s brain development. The effects can be devastating, ranging from lower IQ to higher rates of autism.
In 2015, an EPA review concluded that exposure to chlorpyrifos, an organophosphate insecticide that is similar to sarin, posed an unacceptable risk to human health, both from residues on food and in drinking water. The EPA, led by Obama-appointed Administrator Gina McCarthy, proposed to revoke all food residue tolerances for chlorpyrifos with a final decision to follow a public comment period, by March 31, 2017.
In December 2016, Dow, manufacturer of chlorpyrifos, made a $1 million donation to the incoming administration’s presidential inaugural campaign. Soon after in 2017, Trump-appointed Scott Pruitt, the new EPA Administrator replacing Gina McCarthy, announced EPA’s reversal of the proposed chlorpyrifos ban 20 days after meeting with Dow CEO Andrew Liveris.
In July 2018, Scott Pruitt was forced to resign due to overwhelming charges of corruption and frivolous government spending ($43,000 on a soundproof phone booth, which violated federal spending laws, was only one of Pruitt’s many scandals). The pollution industry lobbyist, Andrew Wheeler, was then appointed to replace Pruitt.
In August 2018, a federal appeals court ruled that the Trump administration endangered public health by keeping this widely used pesticide on the market despite extensive scientific evidence that even tiny levels of exposure can harm babies’ brains. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ordered the EPA to remove chlorpyrifos from sale in the U.S. within 60 days, and instructed the Agency to either revoke or modify the tolerance level for food.
Administrator Wheeler ignored the court order and did nothing, prioritizing corporate profits over children's health.
After EPA’s brazen disregard of the court order and federal inaction, Hawaii, California and New York passed state-level bans on chlorpyrifos. And in January 2020, the European Union banned chlorpyrifos, citing that there is no safe level of exposure.
2021
 a new administration

In August 2021, Biden’s EPA revoked all tolerances for chlorpyrifos on food, establishing the amount of the insecticide allowed at zero, effectively banning it in food and animal feed.
But a GMO growers association sued the EPA and in 2023, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit ruled in favor of the lobbying organization. Despite being based on sound science, the Eighth Circuit judge concluded that the EPA's August 2021 revocation of all food tolerances for chlorpyrifos was arbitrary and capricious and remanded the matter back to EPA for further review.
After that lawsuit, Biden’s EPA decided to not fight the pesticide industry, choosing to limit the scope of the ban to appease the pesticide industry and the chemical farmers.
This neurotoxic pesticide is used on alfalfa, almonds, apples, asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, cherries, citrus fruits, corn, grapes, onions, peaches, pistachios, soybeans, sugar beets, strawberries, tomatoes, walnuts, and wheat, among other crops.
In December 2024, Biden's EPA issued a new proposed rule to revoke all tolerances for residues of chlorpyrifos, except for those associated with the use of chlorpyrifos on the following crops: alfalfa, apple, asparagus, tart cherry, citrus fruits, cotton, peach, soybean, strawberry, sugar beet, and spring and winter wheat.
Yes, you are allowed to laugh out loud. Any proposed ban should and must be protective of babies’ and children’s health. Yet this new proposed rule allows the pesticide to be in all of the foods that babies and children eat.
2025
 a new administration
is your head spinning yet? The new EPA administration will be taking public comments on the last administration’s proposal. This is a real opportunity for the EPA to begin fulfilling Trump's promise to Make America Healthy Again.
A pesticide that causes neurological, developmental, and autoimmune disorders, has no place in our food and puts America’s health at risk, especially babies and children. The science is clear. Chlorpyrifos should have been banned years ago. And it should be fully banned now.
Tell the new EPA administration to do what the EPA proposed in 2015. BAN CHLORPYRIFOS NOW. REVOKE ALL tolerances for food and animal feed.

Brazilian singer Leonardo accused of having slave-like conditions on one of his farms
Tumblr media
One of Brazil’s most iconic musicians, country singer Leonardo, is embroiled in a scandal involving the use of slave labor at one of his farms in the state of Goiás. The Ministry of Labor has included the artist’s name on its “dirty list” of employers who keep people working in conditions akin to modern-day slavery.
During an inspection of the property, federal authorities discovered six workers, including a 17-year-old, living and laboring under extremely degrading conditions. Located in the town of Jussara, the “Talismã” farm spans over 1,000 hectares and is valued at R$60 million (USD10.5 million).
Throughout his career, Leonardo  – whose real name is Emival Eterno da Costa – has expanded into the livestock and agriculture business. The farm in question is dedicated to raising cattle and horses. In addition to space designated for raising livestock, the farm also houses an extensive leisure structure for the artist’s family and friends, with volleyball courts, a swimming pool, and a large lake that surrounds the main residence of the farm and where it is possible to go jet-skiing.
In stark contrast to the luxury of the farm’s social spaces, the workers’ accommodations were found in a dire state. The house in which they stayed was dilapidated, lacked potable water, and had no proper sanitation. Inspectors reported that the workers slept on makeshift beds fashioned from wooden planks and pesticide barrels, while the quarters were infested with insects and bats, and reeked of a foul odor.

The Australia Organic Food Market: Growth Driven by Health Awareness and E-Commerce Accessibility
The Australia organic food market reached a value of AUD 819.48 million in 2023 and is poised for further growth in the coming years. This growth is attributed to rising consumer awareness about food safety, concerns over food adulteration, and the increasing availability of organic products through online channels. The market is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.23% from 2024 to 2032, reaching an estimated AUD 1296.57 million by 2032. As Australians become more health-conscious and demand cleaner, more sustainable food options, the organic food market presents significant opportunities for growth.
Key Factors Driving Growth in the Australian Organic Food Market
1. Health Conscious Consumers
One of the primary drivers of the organic food market in Australia is the increasing awareness among consumers about the health benefits of organic foods. As more people become conscious of the potential risks associated with pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and genetically modified organisms (GMOs), the demand for organic products continues to rise.
Consumers are seeking cleaner, more natural food options that are free from synthetic additives, preservatives, and harmful chemicals. Organic food is perceived as a safer and healthier alternative, particularly in the wake of growing concerns about the long-term effects of conventional farming practices on human health and the environment.
Organic food products are seen as not only healthier but also fresher and more nutritious. For instance, organic fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, and free from harmful chemicals that could potentially affect health. The increasing awareness of these benefits is contributing to the expansion of the organic food market.
2. Increasing Concerns Over Food Adulteration
Food adulteration and contamination are major concerns for consumers, particularly in developed countries like Australia. The rising number of food safety incidents, including the use of harmful chemicals in conventional farming, has led to a demand for more transparent and trustworthy food sources. Organic food products, by their nature, are produced with stringent regulations and quality control, making them more attractive to consumers seeking to avoid the risks of food adulteration.
As food adulteration scandals have made headlines in recent years, Australians are becoming more wary of the food they consume and are turning to organic options as a way to ensure the purity and safety of their diets. The certification and traceability that come with organic food products further reassure consumers that they are making a safe choice for themselves and their families.
3. E-Commerce and Online Availability
The rise of e-commerce has made it easier for consumers to access organic food products, driving growth in the Australian organic food market. Online platforms offer convenience, variety, and competitive pricing, enabling consumers to shop for organic products from the comfort of their homes.
E-commerce has also made it easier for organic food brands, both local and international, to reach a broader audience. Consumers no longer need to visit specialty health food stores to find organic products, as many grocery retailers now offer online shopping options with organic food categories. Additionally, subscription-based services and delivery models have made organic food even more accessible to households across Australia.
The accessibility of organic products through e-commerce platforms has significantly boosted the visibility and market penetration of organic foods in both urban and rural areas of Australia. This convenience has attracted a growing number of consumers to the organic food market, contributing to its expansion.
4. Growing Demand for Sustainable and Ethical Food Choices
The Australian market is increasingly aligning with global sustainability trends, where consumers are becoming more focused on the environmental and ethical implications of their food choices. Organic farming, which avoids synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, and GMOs, is seen as a more sustainable farming method that is better for the environment and local ecosystems.
As consumers seek to reduce their carbon footprint and support sustainable practices, organic foods are viewed as an eco-friendly option. Sustainable packaging and ethical sourcing practices further contribute to the appeal of organic products. Additionally, the growing demand for plant-based and cruelty-free food choices is driving interest in organic food products that meet these criteria.
5. Increased Variety and Product Innovation
In recent years, the Australian organic food market has seen a significant increase in the variety and availability of organic food products. Traditionally, organic options were limited to fruits and vegetables, but today the market includes a wide range of products, including organic dairy, organic meat, snacks, beverages, and packaged foods.
Consumers are looking for greater convenience and variety in their organic food choices, and brands are responding by offering products that cater to diverse dietary needs. This includes gluten-free, dairy-free, and allergen-free organic products, which are driving growth in specific market segments. Furthermore, innovations in organic food processing and packaging are helping to improve the shelf life and convenience of organic foods, making them more appealing to busy, health-conscious consumers.
Key Trends in the Australian Organic Food Market
1. Popularity of Plant-Based and Vegan Organic Products
With the increasing popularity of plant-based diets and veganism in Australia, there is a growing demand for plant-based organic food products. Organic plant-based milk alternatives, like almond milk, oat milk, and soy milk, are gaining traction, along with organic plant-based snacks, protein products, and meat substitutes. This trend is expected to continue growing as more Australians choose plant-based diets for health, environmental, and ethical reasons.
2. Organic Baby Food
The demand for organic baby food is another important growth area within the Australian organic food market. Parents are increasingly concerned about the quality and safety of food consumed by their children, and organic baby food provides an attractive solution. Products like organic baby formula, cereals, snacks, and purees are becoming more popular as parents seek to provide their children with the healthiest start in life.
3. Local Sourcing and Support for Australian Organic Farmers
There is also a growing trend towards supporting local organic farmers and Australian-grown organic products. As consumers become more aware of the environmental and economic benefits of purchasing local products, there is increasing demand for organic food sourced from within the country. This has created opportunities for Australian farmers and food producers to expand their reach and appeal to consumers who value local sustainability and food security.
Challenges in the Australian Organic Food Market
1. Price Sensitivity
One of the primary challenges for the Australian organic food market is the higher price point of organic products compared to conventional foods. Organic farming practices often involve higher costs due to more labor-intensive cultivation methods and lower yields. As a result, organic products tend to be more expensive, which can deter some price-sensitive consumers.
Despite the growing demand for organic food, some consumers may still find it difficult to justify the premium price for certain organic products, especially during times of economic uncertainty.
2. Supply Chain and Distribution Challenges
The organic food market in Australia, while growing, faces challenges related to the consistency and reliability of supply chains. Ensuring the availability of organic products across all regions, particularly in rural areas, remains a logistical challenge. This is particularly true for perishable goods like fruits, vegetables, and dairy products, which require efficient transportation and storage systems.
3. Certification and Regulation
The organic food market is highly regulated, and products must meet specific standards to be certified as organic. While this helps ensure the quality of organic foods, it also places a burden on producers and manufacturers, especially smaller ones who may find it difficult to meet the stringent requirements. Certification and labeling processes can be time-consuming and costly, which may affect the entry of new players into the market.

Farmers Beware: Gang Exploits Trust, Cheats Hundreds in Saurashtra
Tumblr media
In the arid landscapes of Saurashtra, a devastating cyber fraud has left hundreds of diligent farmers in despair. Orchestrated by a cunning gang of 12 individuals, the masterminds behind this elaborate scam were identified as Paresh Velani and his wife, Shital. This deceitful group preyed on the trust of unsuspecting farmers across six districts, pushing them into a web of fraudulent deals.

The decisive intervention of the Jamnagar Cyber Crime unit, in collaboration with Junagadh police, resulted in the apprehension of 11 out of the 12 individuals involved, including the central figures, Paresh Velani and Shital. The roots of this intricate scheme were unearthed after eight farmers reported falling victim to a scam at the Cyber Crime police station. These farmers had been enticed into deals that promised lucrative commissions and profits for engaging in tarpaulin and chemical pesticide agencies.
Inspector PP Jha, heading the Cyber Crime police, shed light on the modus operandi employed by Velani and his wife. They established a fictitious entity named Seven Star to facilitate their fraudulent activities. The gang members, posing as representatives of Seven Star, initiated contact with farmers, offering them agricultural products at seemingly reasonable prices. The farmers' data, crucial for their ploy, was sourced from stores selling farming equipment. The deceptive gang even provided cash-on-delivery options, further enhancing the illusion of legitimacy.

Once the farmers received the purportedly high-quality products, the fraudsters intensified their manipulation. Calling back, they enticed the farmers with promises of commissions and profits if they assumed agency roles for Seven Star. Different members of the gang played the roles of Seven Star executives, each contributing to the grand illusion. Ram Vadher, aged 31, was assigned the task of collecting data from the shops, further amplifying the reach of the scam.

Inspector Jha highlighted the unfortunate trust that the victims placed in the company. Having received seemingly good products and communicating with different individuals representing the fraudulent enterprise, the farmers willingly agreed to take on agency roles. However, the gang, operating with meticulous precision, refrained from signing any contracts, instead focusing on extracting money for registration and other fictitious charges. Eventually, communication ceased, leaving the farmers in the dark about the scam's true nature. The police discovered records containing the names of approximately 125 victims, primarily hailing from various districts, highlighting the extensive reach of the fraud.
This elaborate ruse had been in operation for an alarming two years. While Paresh Velani and his wife orchestrated the grand plan, provided SIM cards, and managed the call center in Junagadh, other members played pivotal roles as tele-callers. Inspector Jha expressed the challenges faced by law enforcement, stating, "We started watching them, but they changed phones and SIM cards often, making it hard to locate them immediately."

The farmers, who had placed their faith in Seven Star, unknowingly became pawns in a sophisticated cyber fraud. As the legal machinery grinds into action, the apprehension of the majority of the gang members offers a glimmer of hope for justice. Yet, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities that persist in the digital age, emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance and stringent measures to protect unsuspecting individuals from falling prey to such malicious schemes.

What are some common examples of adulterants found in food?
Tumblr media
The integrity and safety of our food supply are of paramount importance for public health. However, the presence of adulterants in food poses a significant challenge to ensuring the quality and authenticity of the products we consume. Adulterants are substances that are added intentionally or unintentionally to food items, often with the aim of increasing profits or enhancing appearance. In this article, we will explore some common examples of adulterants found in food, highlighting the risks they pose and the measures taken to combat this issue.
Common Examples of Adulterants in Food
1. Food Dyes and Artificial Colors
Food dyes and artificial colors are among the most prevalent adulterants found in various food products. These substances are added to enhance the visual appeal and mask inferior quality. However, some food dyes have been linked to health concerns, including hyperactivity in children and allergic reactions. It is essential for consumers to read product labels and be aware of the potential risks associated with artificial colors.

2. Melamine
Melamine is a nitrogen-rich chemical compound that has been implicated in several high-profile food adulteration scandals. It has been illegally added to milk and dairy products to increase their protein content artificially. Melamine can have serious health consequences, particularly for infants and young children, and can lead to kidney stones and renal failure. Stricter regulations and increased surveillance have been implemented to detect and prevent melamine adulteration.
3. Vegetable Oil Adulteration
Adulteration of vegetable oils is a widespread practice in the food industry. Common adulterants include cheaper oils or recycled oils that are not fit for consumption. For example, palm oil may be adulterated with cheaper oils such as soybean or canola oil. These adulterated oils can lead to various health problems, including heart disease, as they may contain higher levels of saturated fats or trans fats. Stringent quality control measures and testing are crucial to combat vegetable oil adulteration.
4. Counterfeit Alcohol
Counterfeit alcohol, often made with low-quality or toxic ingredients, is a significant concern in many parts of the world. Adulterants found in counterfeit alcohol can include methanol, isopropyl alcohol, or other harmful substances. Consumption of such adulterated alcohol can lead to severe health issues, including blindness or even death. Strengthening regulations, public awareness campaigns, and collaboration with law enforcement are crucial to combating the production and sale of counterfeit alcohol.
5. Pesticide Residues
Pesticide residues in food can be considered inadvertent adulterants. They result from the use of pesticides during cultivation to protect crops from pests and diseases. Although pesticides play a vital role in ensuring agricultural productivity, excessive or improper use can lead to residues exceeding safe limits. Prolonged exposure to pesticide residues through food consumption can have adverse effects on human health, including organ damage and an increased risk of certain cancers. Strict monitoring, testing, and adherence to good agricultural practices are necessary to minimize pesticide residues in food.
Conclusion:
The presence of adulterants in food poses a significant threat to consumer health and undermines the integrity of the food industry. Food dyes, melamine, vegetable oil adulteration, counterfeit alcohol, and pesticide residues are just a few examples of adulterants that can compromise the quality and safety of our food supply. Governments, regulatory bodies, and food manufacturers must collaborate to implement robust testing procedures, enforce strict regulations, and raise consumer awareness to ensure the production and distribution of safe and authentic food products. Additionally, consumers play a vital role by being vigilant, reading product labels, and reporting any suspicious or potentially adulterated food items. Only through collective efforts can we safeguard our food supply and protect public health.
