Right, now I’ve had some time to process that episode of Casualty, I have thoughts. I’ll start with Stevie’s storyline, as that was the main focus last week and a major one this week (although balanced out evenly with the Rash and Ashok storyline).

Elinor Lawless deserves BAFTAs. Give her BAFTAs now. Seriously, she’s an incredible actress. Her performances all throughout this episode were just absolutely brilliant. The scene with Stevie at the hearing, talking about the impact Marcus’s actions had had on her and how they’d broken down her confidence, was particularly heartbreaking. :(

I was definitely cheering Stevie on at the end of the episode, when she regained access to the evidence against Marcus and got one-up on him. I will say, as I did with the previous episode, that with basically any other character Stevie’s revenge plan might have been unbelievable and cheapened the storyline, but since it’s Stevie, it works. I don’t think it’s crossed the line into being too sensationalist, though it easily could’ve.

What I do think has crossed a line is the useage of Faith in this storyline. I continue to find it absolutely fucking disgusting that the show is continuing to treat Faith as a good person. She isn’t. She’s an abusive monster just like Marcus. Like, Faith and Marcus are literally the same. It is realistic that Faith would hate other abusers while refusing to change her own behaviour or acknowledge her own actions, but I don’t think the show is doing that on purpose.

I also think the way Faith has been written in this storyline comes across poorly from the show, as we’re seemingly supposed to think she’s a saint and a good person for tolerating Stevie. “Vaguely tolerating an abuse survivor’s existence makes you a saint” is not the best moral for the show to be sending out. (And yes, I do say “tolerating”, because that, at best, is what Faith is doing for Stevie. She certainly doesn’t like Stevie, and is not any kind of friend to her.)

In other news, can I just say - I really loved seeing the female patient flirt with Stevie. She’s really gaining Iconic Bi Ice Queen Status now, isn’t she? <3

I probably should’ve expected the show to intertwine the care home abuse story and the Ashok story, and I suppose I assumed it was a possibility, but I was not expecting them to become so closely tied together until the spoilers for this episode came out. The scenes tonight were really, really sad. (And, as usual, featured great acting from Kriss Dosanjh, Neet Mohan, and William Beck.) Poor Ashok. :(

I know I’ve said it before, but I’m really glad the show is doing the institutional abuse storyline. As upsetting as it is to watch, it’s a really important topic that isn’t talked about enough, and it’s great that Casualty are raising awareness.

As for Rash and Paige breaking up... meh. They had potential as a couple, I think, but the show hasn’t written their relationship very well, so perhaps they’re better off apart.

The backstory with Dylan, Max, and their friend Lucy sounds very interesting. It feels like I should consider it a bit of a retcon, but the show has told us so little about Dylan’s past (we mostly say this about his youth, but it applies to his time at medical school too) that they can’t really fuck this up unless they forget Zsa Zsa exists. (I hope they don’t. Obviously Jemima is going to come into this somewhere, but I hope they don’t just ignore Zsa Zsa - I swear Dylan knew her at med school, right? Not just as a junior doctor? And I mean, obviously Dylan can have had two med school mentors.) And it would make sense for Dylan to hate and blame himself for not having spotted the signs of what was happening to Lucy - to think that as an abuse survivor himself, he “should’ve known better”. So yeah, I’m fascinated to see where this goes.

I think they’re building up to something with Marty, but I have no idea what. We’ll just have to see where the story goes, I guess.

Anyway, next episode apparently is Robyn’s exit and has a big plot twist. That should be interesting.

If you want to do major editing such as background changes or special effects, just make sure your post states the edit is yours, not mine! Image Use: You may use my images of you for any and all of the following without checking with me: Social Media profile images, headers, website design, personal galleries, icons & thumbnails, business cards, selling your costume posts, giveaways and handouts, contest entries including calendars or website headers eg: vs cosplay, Arda banner contests, Guest Announcements and Social Media pushes for convention announcements. I just remembered something incredibly stupid about the 2017 GITS live-action movie that annoyed me immensely despite the fact I haven’t seen it. No, not the ScarJo casting, and how they tried to rewrite the plot to make it seem like they were aware of that shortcoming; not that the director’s previous work was objectively garbage and the screenwriter’s claim to fame was the fucking Bayformers movies; not the useage of the geishaborgs as a shorthand for the Orient, which even a white-ass weeb like me can tell you is pretty goddamn worn out (Westerners give more shits about Gion culture than most Japanese do); not even the sense that the filmmakers were trying to bridge the slow pace and meditative tone of the 1995 Oshii movie with the more action oriented but still whip-smart SAC stories.

No, it’s the revelation that ‘Mira Killian’ was Asian and that her real name was Motoko Kusanagi.

Kusanagi is - not a real-ass family name. It’s the name for one of the Three Divine Regalia of Imperial Japan, supposedly relics handed down to Jimmu Tenno from Susanoo himself to prove the Emperor’s divine right to rule. Supposedly they’re locked away under incredibly tight guard somewhere in a shrine where no one is allowed to see them. (Kusanagi itself translates to grass-cutting-sword, but that’s beside the point).

Motoko, as a name, translates to something like ‘fundamental child’ or ‘origin child’. It works for her as a cyborg, yeah, as a sort of new species one might say. But, again, Kusanagi. Having a name like that in the West would sound something like ‘Neo Excalibur’.

It’s so obviously a pseudonym or a ‘manufactured’ name that ties really well with the fact that in the original manga no one has any goddamn idea where Motoko came from. The iconic sniper shot which features in the opening of the manga as well as the 1995 film? That’s the first time anyone hears of Motoko, as evidenced by the fact that Aramaki, her later boss, is blown away by seeing this woman blow someone else’s head away and then jump off a fucking building. Then she shows up in the office of Aramaki’s boss with orders from the former prime minister.

So she’s not ‘real’ in a lot of senses of the word in this case. Not a real human with a body made from nanoplastic and fiber-optic, not a person with a real history known to anyone. Admittedly, SAC and Arise give her an origin story - killed in some tragic accident, cyberized from birth to save her life - and we can argue about whether or not they did a good job with that. Shit, the end of the ‘95 movie has the Puppet Master imply that he chose her to merge with because she, too, was synthetic to a degree.

But the point is that Motoko Kusanagi is not a name Scarjo’s character can reclaim, because it’s not a real name either. SAC and Arise gloss over that, but Paramount tries to highlight it, and in doing so proves how idiotic the people who make films for it are. And the filmmakers don’t exactly seem aware of the postmodern blunder they’ve accidentally pulled. I wouldn’t expect them to, either, after all the oriental iconography they throw up in the film to disguise its thematic vapidity.

From what I’m given to understand, Paramount has been flailing around for awhile, since the Transformers movies stopped selling, so now they’re trying shit like milking GI Joe again. Columbia got bought out by Sony in the 90’s, and I think Paramount will be the next studio to be swallowed up by a larger conglomerate. Probably Tencent or Perfect World, since those Chinese megacorps are going to be losing a shit-ton of money in their domestic gaming market as their own government cracks down on video games of any sort. And I assume the films will only get more vapid and willing to soft-peddle Chinese fascist propaganda from there. It’s not exactly the cyberpunk dystopia Shirow predicted that we live in now, but boy howdy is it a dystopia nonetheless.

You know, one thing that grinds me about the "Allura is forced by the narrative to not be hostile against the species who completely genocided her people" idea is that it IS wrong in canon because her species still exists and she should KNOW this because altea wasn't the only place alteans were.

Speaking of, how does she know that altea blew up? Is she reading ye olde news reports on that console? Who is making those news reports and why do they only report on alteans and not update the castle of lions on anything else? Is it just psychic Altean powers? Why couldn't she divine the other alteans? Allura herself in season 1 admits to using galran galactic hubs to travel, why would she think no alteans ever did so to move to a new life?

Another thing: How does she know Zarkon would try to destroy every altean? it would make more sense to believe that it was just an eye for an eye about blowing up the planet. Why wouldn't he evacuate his wife's family, friends, favourite media personalities, colleagues, etc.

With all these questions in place we can come to a few theories:

Allura was sheltered from court life:

It doesn't explain everything, but let's say that she was sheltered from any important political learning in her youth. No economics, no current events, no law, no foreign affairs, no media classes, no military or tactical learning, etc etc etc.

It explains some things in canon (though not Coran /not/ explaining things) but it implies that alteans start this learning late, or Allura was never really in line for the throne. Leading to idea two.

Someone close to Allura had some bad scruples:

But... why? You might ask. Iunno, just sounds cool. You may as well make up your own reasons but there are some common ones for getting someone out of the way.

This would need someone specifically targeting Allura, probably someone altean and with enough power to threaten Alfor.

... is this another succession to the throne idea? Yes shut up. So Coran is sent to keep Allura safe and away from other alteans, hense why he's on the attack when he sees somewhat altean faces. Now this idea doesn't require any siblings, any uncles, aunts, cousins, or grandparents could pose a threat.

This doesn't require the intent to murder either, so a powerful enough noble or even stupidly rich layman could provide enough pressure to outright force Allura into a marriage. But doesn't this require Alfor not having any power to stop the match? Yes alteans have a matriarchal culture and Alfor is just a trophy husband let's move on.

If that's not your jam then how about this:

-Allura has psychic powers.

Yes we know, you say, She psychicly connected to the mice. And that was an accident right? So what if on Altea she was starting to accidentally connect to people, multiple people, taking memories, getting overwhelmed, giant psychic explosions!

... maybe not but it's cool and has a built in failsafe. If Allura didn't psychicly leech from the mice, she wouldn't believe altea was gone so she would have just gone home.

It could also explain why she was so quick to believe a random altean against Lotor, she could read her mind better and see she was telling the "truth".

But why doesn't it work on Coran? Sorry, psychic powers dont work on people with moustaches. Joking aside (mostly), Allura might have a limiter on her power. After all, we see the evolution of her daily clothes via the Alfor AI so what is she never seen without that is absent from her childhood? Coran might just be less receptive, a rarity amongst alteans and why he was the only one sent with her.

(Hint, earrings. Though she does get her tiara at some point after being a toddler. Suspiciously early.)

But wait, you may say, that doesn't put Allura in danger from any powerful alteans, Alfor wouldn't need to go so far! True, so welcome to theory number three.

Allura's mother is a psychic body snatcher who has been taking over her daughter's bodies every generation to become a nigh omnipotent Queen.

The galra attacking would provide just the distraction Alfor would need to save Allura from this fate, sending her off with a "false" memory that she can never return to Altea and should start a new life. Or maybe he just intended to keep her on ice till her mother died but then died himself.

After all, what happened when Allura wasn't sent away? After her father died she suddenly gained the power to kill Zarkon and all of his forces, Haggar included. She then went on to become Empress and enslave the universe. How long she lived is debatable, but that sort of power boost is odd, as well as her more militaristic tendencies since she never showed a knack for strategy. (Hira says people that might have been casualties of war in Allura's day could now be 'rehabilitated ' which implies Allura might have gone to war beyond just fighting the galra empire.)

I also find it's a little strange that Hira/the alteans recognized Allura on sight. I mean, sure her entire female line looks the same, but how do you know it's her specifically unless she lived for a long time/ her paladin suit was extremely iconic. Implying that the alteans appreciated her more as a fighter than a ruler. I know I wouldn't recognise centuries old rulers from each other, why would random alteans?

As for why Melenor would need Allura if an immortal making rift was there, it's likely that before Voltron fighting wasn't seen as a valuable skill for royals, but upon seeing the vast influence it had she had to raise her new body to be able to handle a fair fight instead of being able to impress with musical or artistic talents.
