The Burden of Being Henry + The Kiss Scene

I made this point in my Hans-falling-in-love post but it deserved its own because I'm still thinking about it, days later.

As this scene from KCD1 points out, Henry is the axle upon which the world turns. And he does not like that about being a video game protagonist. Nothing happens unless he makes it happen. He always has to initiate. This is a burden (and it is a burden) that is always on his shoulders.

I remember a post in the first Hansry comm (rip) that suggested that Henry looked the way he looked after Hans kissed him because Hans took away his agency, his ability to give or deny consent in that moment.

I don't read that scene that way at all (and not only because this game clearly sees some value in establishing consent in a romance scene). I've already talked quite a bit about why I think Henry reacts the way that he does and I've seen others write up wonderful posts about it as well, but:

A part of me is almost convinced that Henry was never going to make the first move. It's too risky. It could get his lord in lord in trouble. Hans has been cagey about reciprocating any of Henry's subtle romantic advances because he's been stuck in a quagmire of repression and fear.

So Hans made the decision for them both. Willingly took away the need for Henry to shoulder that burden (and the responsibility that would come with any consequences that could very well follow) and took it on himself. Equality is a huge theme for Hans in this game, and by taking the initiative, he "lowers himself" in a sense to Henry's level, removing any artifice and any protection that might have been granted to him had Henry kissed him first. Just this once, Henry didn't have to be the one to do it. Just this once, someone else made something happen in his life.

And I think that for Henry in particular, video game protagonist that he is, that is really, really beautiful.

It's been an eventful one! My family is visiting for a month so we've been showing them our favorite places and two days in there was the first ever country wide power outage for a whole day lmao no electricity or internet or any form of communication, nobody knew what was happening and everyone was outside. People gathering around battery radios for any kind of information in the pitch black cobble streets at night was an experience. We were lucky though and all together so we ended up playing board games by led candle light at home ☺️

Maybe one day they can be happy together. But not like this. Not when Infected can barely remember who he’s with, and not when Lampert is so scared of contracting the parasite himself.

One of these days I’ll do a full summary of how I interpret their dynamic. Both as friends and as a ship. I see them as having a queer-platonic relationship for the most part though.

Hey so can they make doors wider. Please. My wheelchair can’t fit through basically any of the fucking doors like, ever. “What, is there a giant that needs to fit through here? 🤣” (real thing I’ve been told) no. I use a wheelchair you ableist fuck. And you’ll never guess what… wheelchairs need extra space! Crazy!

Don’t even get me fucking STARTED on elevator entrances that are so small that I can barely get in or out of them in a safe manner. Recently I was having so much trouble reversing out of an elevator because it was so small that the doors started closing in before I had gotten out. Luckily I had my best friend with me to stop the doors, but what the fuck??

i keep thinking about chris’s “i tried complaining once, it didn’t work” line and also how he’s super witty and funny and perceptive and also A Teenager and how that all would influence the way he navigates a world that isn’t always accessible to him…

just imagining post-ladder-truck-crush-injury buck and chris both using crutches while buck is still getting used to things suddenly being inaccessible to him and getting like, little zingers of insights and life lessons from his best friend’s kid while out and about. chris showing him how he gets up and down the tall curbs when a sidewalk is blocked off unexpectedly, and very loudly and often proclaiming his distain for the “fuck-you” steps (the 1-2 tiny steps at the front doors of houses and buildings that immediately make that entrance no longer accessible)

like buck researches a couple of easy activities for them to try while he’s is still healing and tired and is looking into the establishment’s accessibility accommodations, and hey! the place says on the website that they’re wheelchair friendly! that usually covers his and chris’s bases, so they should be good to go. but when they get there it turns out that, while there IS an accessible entrance with a “ramp”, it’s actually the cargo loading zone that’s literally on the other side of the building which would require them to walk a couple of extra blocks up and back down the street on the other side. obviously they can still get in, but buck feels awful because that’s not what he wanted out of his preparedness. chris just tells him “it’s okay, it happens a lot actually”, and buck is even MORE sad about it, but chris just conspiratorially adds “this is my favorite kind” and starts making his way towards the set of like, idk eight stairs at the front of this building. buck is obviously confused and looks at eddie who just shakes his head fondly, sighs and says “yeah, he does this sometimes” before encouraging buck to follow. when buck finally reaches chris, he’s balancing his crutches on the first stair and turns to buck to whisper “now we get to make them feel bad about it” and proceeds to very feebly, very slowly—and buck has seen chris rough and tumble and rocket his way through things that could (and do) trip him up, this is the most dramatic act of put-upon helplessness buck has EVER seen from this kid—make his way up the stairs. he even sticks his bottom lip out into a little pout for good measure. one of the staff sees them through the glass doors and comes out to tell them about the “ramp” in the back of the building, and before buck can even think of what to say in response, chris is just telling them, very sadly, that he “wouldn’t be able to walk that far without getting too tired 😔😔😔” and continues his hammed-up, sad, slow trek up the stairs while a very harried staff member kind of hovers, not knowing what to do.

buck has to bite his cheek to keep himself from laughing at chris’ act, and then again at the face the staff member makes when they catch sight of buck too, as he begins very dutifully following chris’s lead, eddie in their wake.

sorry, i see people talking about how maysilee donner in all her "one of us has to be the worst victor in history. tear up their scripts, tear down their celebrations, set fire to the victor's village. refuse to play their game." glory was not a rebel?? did we read the same book?

haymitch himself agreed that maysilee was twice the rebel he ever was, standing up to the capitol with an upturned chin and sharp words from day one without ever wavering. why else do you think they took her voice to kill her?

i dunno if anyones mentioned this but even the name sort of makes sense for the idea of a toxic friendgroup when it comes to rot in paradise?

its paradise, youre with your friends, youre hanging out, life is ‘good’, but youre ruining your self esteem and mental health by being around them, aka rotting.

i hate how this is seen as the weakest game because it hit the hardest for me personally, the writing really makes those uncomfortable moments genuinely uncomfortable and junes perspective and dialogue about how her friends are treating her feels so raw and realistic, especially when shes talking about it to ryan 🙁
