#Persona 5 rewrite

Rin's character boils down to two things:

The horrors of being born in a woman's body versus the horrors of existing in a social climate that would rather you not exist.

Rin themself is a horror. But they’re honest about it (read: lying to herself the whole way through about any and all emotion and bonding). They're arrogant, an inconsiderate asshole, spiteful and also kind and compassionate. Justice for Rin doesn't just boil down into revenge—it's the perpetrator not being able to come back. This could be murder (Rin's method of fighting goes from playing a game to complete and utter dominance of mind and body) (read:torture) or this could be making the perpetrator ruin their masquerade with their own two hands.

This Joker is pissed when Black Mask/Noire denies them both Okumura and (a second Ruler because themes).

This Joker deals with the Kamoshida Incident by giving up their claim to anger to Ann and Shiho, giving up that vengeance to Ryuji and instead focusing on the game aspect. The puzzles. (What do you mean there's a Shadow version of how Kamoshida sees her and it's so alien yet familiar that Rin's the only one who knows that that's supposed to be them?)

Rin's not skinny but they are lithe, whatever curves and softness they have, they're covering, smothering under layers and layers of professionalism and uniform. Rin is graceful but masculine—to Kamoshida. To people who can't capitalize on that initially they read masculine. To the Thieves and Arcana at first, they're caught up in what to refer to them as, how to address them, what to call them... Eventually everyone gets with the program that she's just Rin. The Rin who's definitely Fine™ and hasn't slept in three days but Will Scold you about not eating properly Ann. Rin who will eventually get more comfortable with the notion of wearing dresses for themself and not The Mission. The very nonbinary Femme Fatale who doesn't want to risk Ann and instead volunteers as distraction (the eyes that watch her down the road are familiar) (they hate them).

Rin's ruthless in the same way that Akechi is but has people who will stare in horror when they go to far. Who will ask further questions about their intent. Who will eventually learn the language.

The compromise between bleaching their skin (like Akechi does) or straightening their hair.

The internalized victim blaming. The way that they hate Mishima almost more than Kamoshida.

The character arc Rin has culminating in Justice as the means to an end but not the end. The end is when it comes for the victims... Learning that sometimes that needs to have continual help.

It being less KND style takeaway of stupid shitty adults are ruining the world and it being more adults don't know what they're doing and I'm an adult now and I have to Care now, oh god.

Playing fast and loose with Rin's humanity as a dark-skinned hafu. Playing fast and loose with the definition of monster and the wolf imagery.

Rin pulling solutions out of their ass. Rin being manipulative in their vulnerability—it half working. Rin getting books on leadership, on psychology, already able to dodge chalk but can't string together a sentence unless it's a passionate monologue.

Rin being touch starved and terrified of it because it's a weakness how does she fix this? Rin knowing too much about people (every fear, every sin) and not enough.

Joker's only cool as long as you're not friends. Joker's only put together if you don't look to close. The Thieves—the Core Thieves anyway—look at Rin's too detailed, too intricate plans and tell them to take a nap. Joker stopped being cool when they explained that she learned Latin because they wanted to beat out one particular Chess club member in a class they weren't even taking because he stole their cupcake (it was the last chocolate cupcake with red frosting in the school cafeteria) (it was Rin's and Hideoshi deserved to suffer).

The dynamics of realizing that Joker's the youngest college student. Realizing firstly, ah that's why they're a little shit and then—they were in prison for a month. No one told them why they were arrested for a month.

They go to a new school, hopefully for now beginnings and for this whole nightmare to blow over and it doesn't. It gets worse.

Do you think that they can flinch at the beat cops? Do you think that Rin would allow it?

Rin eating everyone they've ever touched sins whole and not being able to set them down. Always remembering. Always haunted.

Rin is a Momento Mori that transform into Vivere. It's just they've definitely got some issues with vulnerability and humanness to work out.

Side thing: Rin's a low-empathy autistic with lotsa of trauma who calls themself a sociopath because they can't cry when their ex-girlfriend dies suddenly.

Y'all remember bad ending of Semester 3, the one where Joker just stops and stays in bed? That's what Rin is constantly outrunning. If they stop too long, they won't get back up. The grief is too much.

Always expecting to be replaced at any time. The space between Morgana and the betrayal too close to not trigger them..

*pats the top of Rin's head* this bad boi can fit so much gender and trauma and kindness in there as well as so many rivalries. So many. Ann and Rin have a rough time together but not as Rough as Makoto and Rin will.

Just Joker as a predator in their own right in accompaniment to Akechi. Just barely restrained chaotic tired vigilante insists upon the fact that they can definitely kill you, more at 10.

P5R Random Thoughts #4: Ann and the Formation of the Phantom Thieves

Just a little note on something that struck me as interesting when I went back to rewatch some of the Phantom Thieves' awakenings - while Joker will eventually come to embody the justice the Phantom Thieves seek, he is relatively aimless at the beginning of the story, without much direction for this burning resolve and anger at injustice he has. Fittingly for a character who gains power through social bonds, the direction this justice will take is strongly influenced by the decisions of the people he meets early on - I've already talked about Ryuji as the driving force which breaks through a lot of Ren's early kind of spaced-out aimlessness, and of course, Morgana, who provides the two with a means to act. This post though is about what Ann contributes to the early conviction of the Phantom Thieves, because it's. A. Whole. Lot.

Ann's awakening is not just the formation of her own resolve, but also the foundation of what would eventually become the Phantom Thieves' entire brand of justice.

The kind of abuse that Kamoshida has inflicted on Shiho has caused her to lose hope entirely. Her future, gone. The respect of her peers, likely gone. With how much stigma still surrounds sexual assault victims, it is highly likely that she has pity from adults around her at best, their judgement at worst.

Kamoshida has stolen Shiho’s dignity. Her reputation. SA is a tool of violence that oppresses and humiliates its victims. And ordinarily, there would be nothing these kids could do to someone with that kind of social standing.

But with her awakening, Ann has declared that she will rob Kamoshida of his dignity right back.

Morgana’s been going on about being cool phantom thieves before, but this line is what firmly cements them as thieves, not heroes. While they certainly do act on behalf of those without power and attempt to seek justice for them, the primary goal established here is much more karmic. The Thieves steal desires, yes, but it’s so much more than that. By taking the desire, the whole foundation crumbles. Palaces literally collapse. And the abuser, left with nothing but their guilt and a burning need to confess it, is robbed of the thing that gave them so much power over their victims, and what they took from their victims every day - their dignity. Their societal reputation.

This direction for their justice is kickstarted by Ryuji and Morgana, but solidified with the addition of Ann to the group. Even before the awakening itself, you get the sense that this is the case.

Joker chases down Ann in the subway, the second major action he takes since his arrest and after his awakening that he makes entirely without influence from Ryuji or Morgana. He was already set to do something about Kamoshida, but hearing what Ann was going through very obviously cleared any lingering doubts about his course of action, despite the risks. As another less important but still interesting note, Ann is also the first of Joker’s future friends that he actually saw. She’s had a huge impact on him.

And it doesn’t end with her awakening either. Joker, Ryuji and Morgana leave it up to Ann to decide Kamoshida’s ultimate fate. This is a turning point. They are all willing to let her kill him if that’s what she believes needs to be done. Ann’s decision, therefore, not to finish him off is what sets the foundations for the Phantom Thieves as a group that does not kill. This in and of itself is likely a reference to og gentleman thief Lupin's refusal to cross the line into murder, so I find it pretty interesting that Ann is the one to decide this path for the group instead of Joker.

Ryuji and Morgana at first mistake this action as a kindness, but the beauty of Ann’s mercy is that it isn’t mercy at all. Death would be an easy out for someone who’s hurt so many in such horrible ways. Ann says “you will live with that guilt for the rest of your life. you don’t get to die. everyone will hear exactly what you did from your own mouth and then you will spend the rest of your life making amends for all the harm you’ve caused.”

“I just think death would be too good for him.”

Their targets are robbed in the same way they robbed their victims, leaving them inelegant and blubbering messes in front of the world. But as a side effect of leaving their targets alive, the target seeks to make amends how they can, without necessitating any forgiveness from the people they’ve hurt. This justice is a blend of retribution and rehabilitation, and it's this mix that makes the Phantom Thieves’ sense of justice so satisfying and appealing to victims.

So while the first Palace was mostly about self-liberation, it set the stage for the eventual justice they would chose to embody - victims helping victims, children helping children find courage in pushing back against adult oppression by reversing the position of power and stealing back what was taken from them - their dignity, respect and reputation.

And most importantly, they make a choice never to restrain oneself or hold back from action in the face of injustice - a core sentiment that Joker and Ann both share in their awakenings.

the gender politics in persona five are so fucking real. ann is hesitant to do modeling full time because she’s victim blaming herself for what happened with kamoshida. ryuji obliviously mentions that ann is missing out on going for a communal bath, forgetting it’s not mixed bathing. yusuke and morgana both put her up on a pedestal-- yusuke seeing her as one of the muses of old, morgana seeing her as not just a love interest but as proof that he’s human, that he can be loved back by a human, and she’s just an object of his desire. 

makoto and sae especially-- sae wants her sister to seek power specifically because she’s a woman, because she knows how hard it is to be respected as a woman in this world and wants makoto to have the best chance possible, even though it’s only making makoto miserable to try and play respectability politics in a game where no one gives a damn about her genuine desire to help people. and it raises the question-- how long can people take advantage of her altruism before she gives up on it, before it’s easier to just be bitter and uncaring like she pretends? the road to power is a long one. she’s already tired.

Haru smiled as she handed the newly embroidered handkerchief to Akira, proud to present a new product for Cafe Noir.

“It was a little tough at first to get the shapes right. But I think the design turned out cute.”

“I agree. I’m sure the customers will love these.” Akira said, smiling as he took in the details of the flowers and black cat faces

But his smile fell once he looked at her and noticed her bandaged fingers. He gently took her hands into his as he took a closer look. She’d chastise him for being so protective but honestly she was one to talk. Even with their time as Phantom Thieves in the past, they both couldn’t help but worry about each other.

“Don’t worry, they’re just a little sore right now. They’ll heal up quickly.”

“Hm… maybe I should help speed up your recovery.”

“Huh?”

Before she could ask what Akira meant, he began to place gentle kisses on each bandaged spot.

How embarrassing, she and Akira had been together for how long now? And he was still finding ways to make her blush like in their school days.

Soon enough, he looked up at her.

“Did that help?”

Haru giggled, “Yes. I feel so much better already.”
