After reading the graphic novel Go With the Flow, about girls who fight period prejudice in their school, many of my students have started asking if we have any nonfiction books about periods. And I realized - yikes, we only had 1! Many kids are getting their periods in elementary school, so having books on it is so important! Being in an elementary school though, I have to be careful which books to select, because many are aimed at teens and address topics that would not be as appropriate for elementary. So i put a bunch of candidates on hold from the public library, and now I'm reviewing them!  This book, Own Your Period by Chella Quint, is the best I've read so far! It uses inclusive language throughout, referring to "people with periods" rather than gendered language, and the illustrations are inclusive of many races, cultures, genders, abilities, and body sizes! The book's tone is upbeat and reassuring, and its information accurate and comprehensive without talking explicitly about sex. The advice it offers is helpful and up-to-date, like suggesting tracking your menstrual cycle, while counseling caution about period tracker apps and the importance of choosing one that is open about what it does with your data and is specifically for young people. Their chapter about choosing period products is wonderful, including pads, cups, tampons, period underwear, and more, and even addressing sustainability. Happy #menstrualhygieneday! I first learned about period poverty when I was sixteen. I had never thought about it before, as I was privileged enough to have secure access to period products. It was a big wake-up call for me to hear directly from homeless women about their experience using things like toilet paper and socks to take care of their periods. It filled me with so much curiosity and even anger on the issue. Throughout my advocacy journey since then, I was often met with doubt that true menstrual equity could exist. Yes, fighting for menstrual equity also requires dismantling misogyny, patriarchy, and deeply ingrained period stigma. But even in the last year, we have seen that it is possible.  For example, Scotland recently passed legislation that made period products free for everybody. Under the legislation, the government will set up an initiative to allow anyone who needs free period products to get them. New Zealand now provides free period products in schools. 70 per cent of health care workers are women, and shortages of essential menstrual hygiene products like sanitary pads or tampons are already affecting certain populations due to the pandemic. To mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on menstrual health and hygiene, here’s what we can do:⠀ ⠀ - Ensure access to menstrual products, safe water, soap and period-friendly sanitation facilities at home and in health centres so that women and girls can manage their periods hygienically. ⠀ ⠀ - Support on-going intervention to tackle period stigma and provide access to information about menstruation via interpersonal communication.⠀ ⠀ - Maintain levels of investment in menstrual health and hygiene during the pandemic. ⠀ ⠀ Let’s take this action for every woman and every girl.

Most of us have struggled with handling our periods and our studies together. The cramps, the drowsiness and the mood swings do make it hard to focus when you have an exam coming up or an overdue assignment. But how many of us had to quit our studies altogether just because we’re uncomfortable and uneasy for about seven days a month?

71% adolescents in India remain unaware of menstruation till menarche which makes it a mammoth task to cope with an almost unusual bodily change without any mental or material preparation. To add to the problem. A 2015 survey by the Ministry of Education found that in 63% schools in villages, teachers never discussed menstruation and how to deal with it in a hygienic manner. A 2014 report by the NGO Dasra titled Spot On! found that nearly 23 million girls drop out of school annually due to lack of proper menstrual hygiene management facilities, which include availability of sanitary napkins and logical awareness of menstruation.70 percent of mothers with menstruating daughters considered menstruation as dirty.Indian Council for Medical Research’s 2011-12 report stated that only 38 per cent menstruating girls in India spoke to their mothers about menstruation.

The plausible solution lies in educating and informing. Providing resources to adolescents to cope with their menstruation cycle and manage studies at the same time will motivate them to not choose giving up on school as the first option to the problems they face. All of us can do our bit, even the smallest pebbles can cause tremendous ripples in the ocean.
