Ares saying he hates his own kids and the worst day of the year is when they visit him makes my heart break for Clarisse more. Clarisse fights so hard for scraps of her father’s attention and Ares sees her as just another nuisance. He doesn’t care about her unless she’s able to serve him. But Clarisse (like Annabeth) thinks she just has to work harder for him to love her. In her mind, it’s all her fault. Which is why she is so angry when little punk Percy strolls in at twelve years old, no training and unclaimed, and immediately defeats the minotaur. In three days hes already got the gods attention and his father claimed him. Of course she’s angry.

The thing that the whole "Poseidon told me to stay away" sets up is that it's absolutely going to be thrown back in everyone's faces in season 5 I just can't decide who I want to do the throwing

There's Hermes, who upon finding his favorite (and evilest) son dead on Olympus, could scream in rage at his uncle that he was wrong and that advice caused all of their problems

There's Poseidon, who upon finding the ruins of Olympus and the ruins of his own kingdom waiting for his return but his favorite son shaky but alive, can announce to Hermes and the rest of the Olympians that he was wrong and it was bad advice they should never have followed

Or there's Percy (I think this is most likely), who upon the return of the Olympians to find death and destruction everywhere that they could have prevented, among his "you have to pay attention and claim your kids" speech, can throw back the "you once told me my father said you had to stay away even when it's hard. But none of you did that--if you had, I would have died years ago. I wouldn't have made it through my quests without help from each of you at different times even when you were told not to interfere. I couldn't have fought this war if I hadn't had the support of my father and my family/friends, and we certainly wouldn't have won. You can't ignore your kids, or keep them at arms length and stay out of their lives. That's how we got in this mess in the first place"

To add to your Percy Jackson post, the kids at camp half blood sacrifice their favorite foods and don't even touch them first. Sally gives him a half eaten sundae, after she's had her fill, and he comes immediately. Like he was waiting for her ask for him, waiting for an excuse to talk to her

Does Percy actually hate the gods or does he just believe that they should and more importantly can do better?

Like he's pretty sympathetic to Hermes who clearly wishes Luke wouldn't be evil and could maybe find a way to forgive him, who tried to be there for Luke and his mom but actually that made it all worse and Luke just won't see that. If Percy really hated the gods, would he make them claim their children? Or would he make them stop having children, because they're not good enough parents to be worth all the dangerous parts of being their kid?

I just think Percy doesn't like the gods, but it's not because he sees them as irredeemable (as a whole), but because after being raised by a loving mother (and actually getting a lot of support from his father over the years, eventually) he knows what it would look like if they just like lived up to everything they could be.

i just finished rereading the last olympian and YESSS the way he's already so angry in the first three episodes of the show is AMAZING knowing that by the end of the series he will choose to MAKE THE GODS CLAIM THEIR CHILDREN INSTEAD OF BECOMING IMMORTAL
