I desperately want for there to be a moment in the show when Percy and Annabeth are walking and talking and they pass a group of horses. Suddenly Percy stops dead - his head whips round and 'She said WHAT?'.

He jogs back to the group of horses and Annabeth has left staring. Only to hear him say "She said that...about your mother?" *Neighing noises* "I mean no you're not a foal, you weren't born yesterday but still that kind of language - calling someone an ass surely that's too far?"

Plotting out "Charlie Bone" (Disney movie)

Background

(Disclaimer: Given that this is an adaptation of a novel, I'm making changes that I'd assume would happen given how books are translated to film, whether good or bad. I love this series, but I wanted to do a kinda realistic adaptation with how the film industry works)

Following Disney's recent successes, a pitch eventually makes their way to them for a story that came in the form of something they don't often adapt: a novel. Not having done so since the 2000s with "Treasure Planet," "Meet the Robinsons," and "The Princess and the Frog" (and very loosely), the idea is met with hesitation, even at the suggestion of making it a musical. The story--a proposed adaptation of the "Children of the Red King" series by Jenny Nimmo--is 7 books long, and in executives minds would be much better suited for a live-action series on Disney+, citing the recent success of "Percy Jackson," especially seeing how young most of the main characters are in the story and concern that it will alienate a big chunk of their audience. However, they're eventually coaxed into the idea, but decide to make notable changes pending Nimmo's approval, ie several characters are removed, altered, or conflated with someone else (notably conflating the characters of Henry Yewbeam and Ollie Sparks, given their similar mistreatment at Bloor's Academy), most of the students are now moved into the age bracket of 14-18, and Charlie's Welsh heritage being a bit more pronounced in the story, and making the Red King's history known in the film rather than waiting later. Wanting to emulate the "Harry Potter" series, they decide to use the film as an intro into the world of Charlie Bone rather than throwing in every vital piece of information seen in the series. While originally considering Peter Baynton as director due to his work on "The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse," they eventually approach Chris Sanders to direct and write the film due to his successes with Dreamworks, and the Anderson-Lopez team is brought on to do the music once more (making this their 3rd Reconstruction-era film). While 2D animation was considered, they decided that 3D was better for a more "serious and grounded" look to fit into the modern-day setting with magical elements. They also decide to keep most of the focus on the younger cast with the older characters being hinted at as a threat to be dealt with later. Juuuuuust in case the film didn't meet critical and/or box office expectations, Disney decides to leave the film slightly open-ended, but with no specific hints to the future.

(Note: The film would be influenced by the first 3 books, but I never really decided if it would be 3 books in one film, or if it would be an original story containing certain details from the 3 books such as Emilia's kidnapping, the time twister and Dorothy, and the blue boa.)

Plot

Charlie Bone has always had a funny way with images, be they photographs or paintings. Sometimes he sees them move, sometimes he hears them talk--and sometimes he can even hear their thoughts at the moment the picture was being taken. This makes his Grandma Bone enroll him in Bloor's Academy, a school for young people gifted at music, art, or drama, though the school is known for also admitting descendants of the Red King, a mysterious figure from whom Charlie is descended and gets his powers from. While there, he falls under the watchful eye of the Bloor family, who plan to use his powers for sinister purposes.

Characters

(Note: As usual, this isn't an extensive list of characters. While I usually list 3-5, this is a novel adaptation, so I recommend going to the wiki for a better understanding of the characters, which in my mind Disney would mostly follow. Given the large cast, I'm only discussing two characters who represent the two "sides" of the Red King's Descendants)

Charlie Bone--A young man able to hear paintings and pictures (and then some), his paternal grandmother immediately sends him to Bloor's Academy, where other people "like him" go to school. Thankfully, his friend Fidelio goes there, and he makes friends with several people, particularly Olivia, Lysdandre, Tancred, Emma (once Emilia) and Gabriel. They all have sympathy for (and are somewhat protective of) the younger Billy Raven, but his vulnerability and easily influenced personality thanks to be raised by the Bloors for years has made his allegiance questionable. Charlie's main goal is finding out about the death of his father, which no one at home talks about, and some of the staff at Bloor's act strangely about. His only allies outside the school are his mother, maternal grandmother, and paternal uncle, while his paternal grandmother and her sisters report directly to the headmaster of Bloor's Academy, and they seem to be hiding a sinister secret with Charlie at the center of it all.

(Important note: to reduce the already large cast size, Benjamin is removed, with aspects of his character and story being given to Fidelio and Billy)

Manfred Bloor--The son of the headmaster of Bloor's Academy, Manfred is endlessly spoiled due to being the only person in his direct family who's been given a gift in ages, notably the ability to hypnotize. It's been noted that there's something "not quite right" about him, being quite prone to evil deeds but also emotionally vulnerable, particularly where his mother is concerned. With the expectations thrust upon him, he's grown up to be quite mature for his age (even if he can be a bit childish and still have regular teenage insecurities), and uses his powers of hypnotism to the benefit of the Bloors. He has very few friends; in the film, they are only Asa, Zelda, Joshua, and Dorcas.

Songs:

Passing Through--Ever since he was a child, Charlie has been drawn to images. When a friend's birthday card is accidentally sent to him, he discovers that he can actually hear what the subjects in the painting are saying and thinking. He wonders if he can use this skill to find out how his father died, but his paternal grandmother has removed all pictures of him, and Charlie suspects it has to do more with his gift than with her grief.

Shadow of a Doubt--Going to Bloor's for the first time, Charlie is overwhelmed by Manfred Bloor, the son of the headmaster who reveals he is a hypnotist, and a very skilled one at that. The Bloors are assured by Charlie's grandmother and her family (minus her brother) that Charlie will be compliant to the school and the Bloor's goals, but Charlie himself won't make it easy on them.

Waiting in Silence--As Charlie gets accustomed to Bloor's and makes new friends, he feels sympathy towards Billy Raven, who stays at the school perpetually due to being an orphan. While Charlie and his friends try to include him in their social circle, it becomes apparent that Billy is used as a pawn for the Bloor's, and they reluctantly exclude him from their more clandestine activity.

Fly Away--Upon the discovery that she is Emma Tolly and she was brainwashed by Manfred Bloor, Emilia Moon takes flight from her so-called "parents," and realizes that her "brother" Henry (a cross between Henry Yewbeam and Ollie Sparks) is also an imprisoned victim of the Bloors, and she rescues him too.

The Red Tree--Charlie meets Manfred's mother, who has been kept at Bloor's Academy against her will, and tells Charlie about the history of the Red King (sans Shadow). She hopes that the insight into his family history will shed some light on the sides chosen at the school.

Blackout--Paton, Charlie's uncle who often tries to stay out of his older sisters' way and keep his head down, stands up against Charlie's Grandma Bone and successfully intimidates the Bloors into leaving Charlie alone, at least for a time.

Shadow of a Doubt (Reprise)--Following the aforementioned "open-ended" ending, a last-minute lullaby is sung by Manfred, who seems to become more controlled and relaxed, singing about how despite Charlie's triumphs, he still has an ace in the hole: Charlie's father is actually alive and well, and is under a spell placed by Manfred.

Headcanons! (Isaac & Nigel)

[Warning: Contains spoilers and talk of death (of course there will be)]

I like to think that he is from Virginia, so he has a slight southern accent. He hides it well, but it does slip out every now and then. The accent does come out during specific pronunciations and whenever he is caught off guard. He doesn't hide it around Nigel, however.

The Iliad is one of his favorite Greek stories. Can and will recite it word for word. Give him a quote from it and he can tell exactly which book and line it came from.

This man is autistic. You can't tell me any different. The war was sensory hell for him. His handkerchief is essentially a main grounding object for him due to the texture. He will also fidget with the handkerchief when he is nervous. Prefers his room without too much light, but just enough to see (i.e. candles).

Has an extent amount of knowledge about horses. He grew up raising horses on the farms of either family members or family friends. He took great care of his horse (Chestnut- a bay-colored Arabian stallion) during the war since it reminded of the one he had took care of as a boy. Can name the breed of any horse just by looking at them for a second.

Tired a good chunk of the time. Dying of dysentery was not great- dehydration and malnourishment really took a toll on him in the afterlife. Some days, he can manage, but is really sluggish and attempts to hide it from everyone. Other times, it's hard to get out of the bed.

Has a scar on the left side of his face. Obtained said scar from trying to fix the bayonet onto the gun, dropping it and attempting to catch it, with the blade slicing him in the process. Proceeds to say he got it in a fight with another British soldier, but only few know the truth. (Nigel)

Loves giving Nigel top-of-the-head kisses due to his height.

Forgot everything he was originally going to say while proposing to Nigel. Practiced in the mirror for a full hour, went to go propose, then forgot everything due to nerves. Made up something he guessed was what he originally planned. Turned out great either way!

Has named every duck on the property. Every duck has a different mannerism and/or marking that makes it subtle to tell which is which. Only him and a few other ghosts can tell which duck is which. (His favorite duck is Percy, a mallard that follows him around from time to time)

Has documented over 2 centuries worth of ant drama. By documented, I mean remembered everything and has not forgot a single event. He has given Isaac an overview of the lore so he can rant about what is going on in the ant colony.

Prefers The Odyssey over The Iliad. Him and Isaac have "debates" over which is superior. They both know that both stories are great on their own, but enjoys having to defend their favorite. It adds a bit of fun to their days.

Big on pet names for his beloved. Seems to come up with a different one every hour. Commonly used ones include: "love", "darling", and any variation of "dove" and "dear".

Enjoys the sudoku puzzles that Sam leaves out. Isaac joins him half of the time to assist in the solving. Record time to solve one alone is 5 minutes. With Isaac, 3 minutes.

Contrary to what Isaac says, Nigel fell first. Caught a glimpse across the field and saw him attempting to instruct his men on how to properly fix bayonets. It did not end well for Isaac, but Nigel thought it was adorable.

Complements Isaac's accent every chance he gets. Absolutely adores the accent.

Has a small poem book inside of his coat. He has most likely read it over 1000 times, and yet still enjoys it as well as the first time reading it.

Hours past and Nasiens had only one thing left to do to safe Anne and the unborn child. Something he read in a book of Hendrickson long ago. Somehow he managed the difficult treatment together with his student and a woman who took care of Anne. When Percival arrived Nasiens waited for him infront of the house, tired and exhausted, but with good news. There was only one thing he hoped that Percy could heal the scars on her body. lucas: he read heartstopper as a semicloseted queer kid and it's sort of become ingrained as part of him, it's what got him into writing his own graphic novels and webcomics. he also watched hazbin hotel aged 15 and unfortunately he wont stop watching it. lin has tried to tell him. he also likes trashy police dramas.

lin: biggest homestuck fan there ever was. he really connected with it. he's also a huge fan of horrors movies, psychological usually, and he's a saw franchise enthusiast. he's seen every pokemon TV show that there is. he also watched avatar the last airbender and made zuko his entire personality when he was 14. oh also he's a huge percy jackson enjoyer. he can't get enough of it

noah: noahs whole thing is that he loves films but i don't watch enough of them to know what's considered good LMAO. i think he'd like the muppet movies though. and society of the snow. he probably has a soft spot for barbie. he also likes graphic novels because he's not good at reading.

OKAY episode 2!! holiday shenanigans and work kept me from watching it till now but here we go!

- We got the "you drool when you sleep" (in the wrong spot but still), I can rest easy

- Annabeth just standing around spookily instead of sitting down or feeding Percy nectar / ambrosia is really funny to me

-  about 80% sure they had Percy notice the Minotaur horn right away for time issues, but I really liked the slow build up to Percy accepting it all happened, Grover being patient with him and then sighing and giving him the shoe box with the horn.

- Definitely different from the book, Grover apologizing and all. But it's consistent with what the show did so far.

- Lowkey sad we're not getting a shot of Percy looking out at how beautiful the day/camp is, then down at the horn, then being miserable. Not a huge deal, it was just always a scene that stuck with me as a kid, I was hoping it would be included here. Walker would CRUSH it I know!

- I knew from the trailers that CHB is basically all inside a forest afaik, but it's still weird not to have the Big House overlooking the valley, being able to see everything. Especially since they kept Thalia's pine on a hill.

- Percy's annoyance with mr D is on point but it would hit a lot harder if we had seen Smelly Gabe be a drunkard and Percy somehow realizing Mr D likes to drink too -- his initial defensiveness and dislike for him was rooted in his trauma from his stepdad. It still works cause we know he doesnt like bullies thanks to Nancy, but I miss that

- The fakeout with calling Percy son made me ugly snort but I kinda miss how utterly bored he is in the books

- THAT SAID. the sarcastic tone, dismissive behavior, etc, DO remind me of this version of Gabe, so I do like Percy getting mad at him here!! I retract my earlier statement, it's subtle but if you pay attention you might tie mr D's behavior to Percy's stepdad. Still wish Percy looked more /angry/ about it tho.

- again with the happy/funny music tho, am I supposed to be laughing that Percy's miserable?

- hang on I did not follow the marketing all that much but WHY can NO adaptation get that Chiron's horse half is white lmao, is it an animation thing? I DONT KNOW.

- I do like how they used the wine bottle thing at the end to explain the demigods being able do whatever they want, so between that and getting show!Gabe vibes from mr D I quite like this

- Except for one tiny thing: where's Annabeth?

- Mr D literally said Grover succeeded they are SO CUTTING THE COUNCIL THING I AM SO MAD

-  ohHHHHh okay NEVERMIND we DO have open spaces, this place looks awesome!! Surprisingly similar to how I imagined CHB except I always saw the cabins not being in the forest, just close to it. I do love how they look tho, I can definitely get used to this. Very cozy somehow.

-  I will say this version of Chiron is growing on me after being a little iffy on him in ep 1!

- Luke has a slightly less cool kid, sunny disposition when we meet him but the entire scene at Hermes' cabin was Very Nice! I just miss Annabeth's blushing and stammering around Luke here

- No seriously where is my daughter have you seen her

- Mr D and Chiron playing, presumably, pinochle made me smile. Also the tiger print shirt lol

- hang on HANG ON we have a WHOLE SCENE with the Council of Cloven Elders that has NOTHING to do with Grover's searcher's license?

- I loved the scene with the dryad hinting at Grover being an anxious bean tho, finally some signs of that

- I am? So confused about this. I guess they changed Grover so beyond recognition that they have to give him some unnecessary drama/arc about lying to Percy? Why reveal that Hades has Sally right now - why not let it be a surprise when Percy gets to the Underworld? Why not let Percy agree to the quest, supposedly bc of his father, and later down the line let him confess he's only doing it to try and get Sally back like he does in the book? Why make Grover AND Chiron hide this from him? Unlike everything else, I don't understand the reason for these changes.

- Is... Is it Luke who tells Percy about the nightmares? I could have sworn it was Annabeth - she's definitely the one who talks about the AHDH and dyslexia. WHY are they giving Annabeth's lines to everyone else? I can see this being to show Luke and Percy bonding but at what cost?? WHERE IS SHE.

- ...  We aren't getting the training scene with best-swordsman-in-centuries Luke and the disarming maneuver that's gonna come back in the final fight are we.

- Clarisse sadly does not have the same vibes as the book. Also she looks so much older than Percy? Isnt she just 14?

- Interesting that they're setting up Percy catching the gods' attention - at least his dad's rn. If this doesnt lead into the "I'm impertinent" thing with Medusa's head I'll be sad.

- ps I LOVE that Luke is all about glory to be admired and looked up to, and Percy Does Not Care about it at all lol. Delightful way of showing that!

- Okay the first real laugh this got out of me was Percy being disgusting at archery. What an adorable bean I LOVE him

- Idk, this dyslexic, ADHD kid who's always been told he's the problem struggling with believing he was too broken to keep his father around, only to later be told he IS his father's son and that Poseidon is proud of him regardless of what the world would tell him... That felt special to me. I hope the workaround this is to have Annabeth call him out on it as she does later down the book, when he sends Medusa's head to Olympus.

- awwww no "you're dead, punk, totally dead?"- she just runs? How very un-Clarisse of her. Also, no Annabeth around to say she wants him on her capture the flag team?

- the admission of stalking is HILARIOUS but I wish they kept her intro to earlier in the episode, you miss out on a lot of Annabeth's less "cool" moments like stammering around Luke (and I always loved that Percy was immediately aware of it and she glared at him, it was so indicative of their eventual dynamic), biting her nails/barely looking when Clarisse is bullying Percy and getting all wet with toilet-water but taking it like a champ with the capture the flag comment.

- I wonder if the "litter sister" comment is gonna hold up. Even if Luke never develops feelings for Annabeth eventually (which I would prefer, it always felt forced on his side), Percy's jealousy of him and Annabeth's crush on him are important.

- On one hand: I like they're setting up Luke, Thalia and Annabeth this early on. On the other, much like the Minotaur fight, you miss out on a lot of Percy figuring the puzzle pieces out on his own. He keeps getting exposition dumped on, especially with THIS memory in particular! Considering Rick is writing for this, and I feel his HOO series had a lot of the same issues, it's a bit sad to see that bleed into the original series. There was a lot less nuance in the sequels, and we keep consistently seeing the same here.

- But you DO show-dont-tell the conch horn? HAH :'D

- I REALLY wanted Percy to be wearing armor that was a size too big for him I really did

- nOOOOOOo they're cutting Annabeth's blushing and stammering PLEASE don't get rid of her crush on Luke it's IMPORTANT. Let it be one-sided!!! it's okay!!!

- Like I said earlier - they sanitized Annabeth's less "cool" moments, she feels too in control here. I want to see her be a 12yo!

- I just realized- no hounding him about the Solstice either. Did Mrs Dodds even say anything about "it" being stolen? The buildup to the master bolt's theft was SO good. Now she's just generally interested in him, not actively hunting for her quest. We're TOLD Annabeth is obsessed with her quest but we don't SEE how frazzled she is about it, how much she's seeking it.

- Okay, fine. Distracting me with the little fixing of his armor. It's lowkey working and they BETTER link back to this in BOTL or I WILL scream.

- The cut away to Percy flossing got a snicker out of me, tho my Percy will always and forever be a millenial. Also I can imagine Annabeth's face while she looks away from him peeing in the woods lmao

- Bonus: it shows Percy whistling! It better come back with Blackjack in the future!

- No growling from the hellhound?

- Why is daughter-of-the-god-of-war Clarisse taking her helmet off?

- I miss Percy at least trying to defend himself, taking a beating including from the electric spear, and only then telling them where the flag is. He would NOT volunteer the information right away just bc he's surrounded!

- Did they EXPLAIN why Clarisse thinks Percy is a fraud? I don't get it. Why not just leave it to the good ol' "she's mad he pulled a crazy feat like killing the Minotaur, one-upping her without even knowing", instead of having her doubt that he did it? In the book she was more like "yea right like THIS wimp is a Big Tree kid material, like he actually did it" - which felt more just mean of her than genuinely not believing him

- Also, why have Percy run from them- why not set this at the creek that marks the border between territories? Why have Percy run all the way to the canoe lake? Why do ALL OF THAT and not even show him stepping on the water and getting reinvigorated by it? This also takes away from Annabeth having to spy on him-- she's meant to connect the dots here, it takes away from her too

- I genuinely LOVE that they kept Percy catching Clarisse's spear on the edge of his shield, but the way he breaks it is almost on accident. I'm almost offended, this was a HUGE win for Percy and set up how he used the water to defeat her father later own. The choreography grows to be neat, but at the cost of all that made this fight special. Same with the Minotaur and Mrs Dodds. Is this going to be a pattern??

- For how old Clarisse looked, I love how YOUNG she suddenly looks when she screams-- that was a FANTASTIC bit of acting by whoever has been cast as her.

- The flag did not turn blue I am SO SAD

- More importantly: same with Clarisse not realizing it was all a set up-- they stripped Annabeth of THAT bit of smarts too. In the book she's counting on Clarisse being blinded by her need for revenge, she puts Percy right at the border where she can see him alone, and Annabeth knows he'll distract her enough to let her team win just as it helps her figure it out if Percy's the one. But in the show Percy is tucked away in the middle of nowhere and Clarisse straight up says she doesn't care about winning, which means Annabeth's "killer strategy" that Luke is so confident on actually had nothing to do with him- she was just looking out for her own desire to get a quest. I Do Not Like this change at all.

- I wanted to see Annabeth for so long and yet she feels so distant and aloof here, it's so strange. Annabeth is rational but deeply emotional... This reminds me of what the later series did with her, stripping her of a lot of that so she can be the cool leader of the 7 or whatever (the only exception being HoH really) and I REALLY hope they arent doing the same here.

- OhhhhhHHHhhh no I don't. I DON'T like that she pushes Percy into the lake. Not for the books and not for how the show has been handling Percy's character. I think I'll elaborate it in a different post here but. Yea no. This really bothers me.

- Cant believe I'm gonna say this but the movie did the claiming scene better.

- Also they removed the hellhound like WHERE ARE THE STAKES HERE

- I liked Percy's stammering of "I dont know"- how his instinct is to apologize, but... The changed vibes of the claiming scene... the triumphant music, no bowing, Chiron's speech being changed... This was a "the very foundations of your world have been shaken, AGAIN". Annabeth is not meant to be smiling or in control, she's almost speechless. Even Clarisse is meant to be bowing.

- The music and Annabeth's reaction is treating this as a victory when it's not. It's just profound shock, awe and terror at once. Just by people's reactions, you know what a big deal being a Big Three kid is. This is not it, fam.

- "claimed by poseidon" and 5 words later "son of poseidon" is writing my teacher would dock points out of

- ... the episode doesn't end here? The episode should have ended here.

- They ARE EXPOSITION DUMPING HIM WITH NO BUILD UP I KNEW THEY WOULD DO THIS AND I HATE IT. IM SO MAD WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS RICHARD.

- Percy's speech about Sally is great but is undercut by mr D *actually* yelling at him like? Mr D would never, EVER do that. He doesnt really feel like a god here, he'd just show a tad of his divine power and Percy would shut the heck up. Also, Percy accepts the quest because he brought the wrath of Zeus to camp - to innocent campers, and to innocent mortals. Why is he refusing it here? What are you doing to my son? What kind of BS writing is this???

- Grover is actively disobeying a DIRECT order from his primary god (alongside Pan, who hasnt been mentioned at all). What is going on. Again why are we revealing this now. Why are we exposition dumping AGAIN. Why are we taking PERCY'S motivation and spelling it out IN THE FACE of the camp directors, and rubbing our faces on it like its mud?

- This is blood of olympus level writing I went from the SUCH a high to being fuming. delightful.

- OH MY GOD THEY CUT ANNABETH FROM A SCENE AGAIN. WHAT THE F-CK.

So, I went from genuinely enjoying this episode better even with the changes to being absolutely livid at some of said changes.

Also, Noelene, please don't make yourself small for Robbo. Dream big. I believe in you!

Loudermilk (with mum) 1x10 Bourbon Street (s1 Finale)

Loudermilk returns to Seattle and makes a huge decision that affects not only his life, but the lives of everyone in his world as well.

So his ex-wife preferred him a drunken mess. Wow. He definitely doesn't need someone like that in his life anymore. But I did appreciate they hired an actual amputee to play her. And I like Ben's actor but I became to hate his character. Hopefully he'll come around in s2 and make amends.

Finally remembered to watch this. I didn't realize how much of the stunts Walker actually did himself. And all the fight rehearsals and water training looked so cool. Literally living his best life. It looked knackering though so I hope he got to rest and sleep loads after. And I loved how even with all the cgi they understood that it works best with actual sets and props. The budget must've been huge.

you know what would be really nice? a book on the demigods, but there’s no life-threatening, dangerous quest and monsters chasing after them.

it’s just a bunch of half-god teenagers in a summer camp with a half-horse looking after them creating absolute chaos. friendships being made. ‘betrayals’ that are basically abandoning ship in a huge prank, or snitching on other cabins. petty rivalries between campers, whether it be from their parentage or fights gone wrong.

give me a chapter of the stoll’s favourite prank, the most dangerous one, their first one, how much they’ve stolen from the campers. them going to their dad for dating advice, because hermes is never too busy for his children (although sometimes they get lost somewhere in all his calls) (‘there was this one time a few years ago, pretty sure travis made out with percy during that one...’ ‘he’s a good kisser okay’)

give me a chapter on athena children and how they secretly have an underground library and that’s why most people don’t see them in between meals and training. (there’s a rumour going around that they have a cult in the forest somewhere, but it hasn’t been proven yet) (‘c’mon malcolm, just tell me if you guys are actually in a cult’ ‘connor that is top secret information so no’)

give me aphrodite cabin being the only reason the couples in camp get their shit together. give me drama between two sisters, love triangles, them helping people figure out their sexuality, gender, pronouns etc. (‘mitchell did you and connor steal my makeup again i told you i can always buy you your own’ ‘drew you have got to see the chemistry between the new iris kid and the hermes one’ ‘sorry what was that? oh my gender is non-existent i had to get it surgically removed bc there was no room for my anger and badassery. yes lacy that is actually a word don’t believe what those athena kids tell you’)

give me a demeter cabin chapter and how they actually curate most pranks in camp half-blood and take turns picking which cabin they’re going to frame for this one, mostly out of petty fights (‘get up losers the hermes cabin decided to piss me off today’ ‘that new nemesis kid? yeah i want him on kitchen duty for a month’ ‘percy jackson. stable duty. 3 months. preferably now please.’)

give me demigods from the newer cabins talking to each other, making friends, and finding out how to kind of merge their powers together in combat, try out new fighting styles and maybe create their own.

or random things like that one food fight that made chiron ban the hermes kids from the kitchen, or the great athena cabin prank where they scared the absolute shit out of the campers, or the one time the hades, hecate and hypnos cabin created the most memorable halloween ever. 

just them being normal (or at least, the most normal one can get with powers and godly blood running through their veins) and idiotic teenagers

Thoughts on the New Trailer

normally I’d put this under a read more, but I guess that new ‘expand’ feature makes read mores pointless I guess so.

opening shot shows us the whole school, and what seems to be a whole town behind it? I was wondering why the school would be the Only safe space for monsters, like you’re only in high school for what... 3, 4 years? but it seems a whole society has been built surrounding the school, giving us a bit of a Camp Jupiter (from percy jackson) situation I guess? I think that’s really fun from a worldbuilding perspective. The trailer also gives us a few more locations

like this: the Coffin Bean, which is on school grounds now, supporting my theory that the school is more than an educational institution, but rather an entire town. Also it just looks gorgeous. The vibes are Immaculate. Gothic Castle with Slightly Less Ancient wooden buildings added on and Even more modern 1960′s Diner-looking coffee shop within it. Amazing concept, lovely execution. Also I’m just happy to see the Coffin Bean back, I used to have the playset as a kid.

we also get to see Frankie’s bedroom, it’s full of knick-knacks but what stood out to me were the Body Parts they’ve got hanging behind them. Are they there purely for decoration, or are they Replacement Parts they could change into if their limbs break or they feel like sporting a pink hand one day? (I wonder if it’s foreshadowing for the animated series, maybe switching up their body parts will be a Thing with Cartoon Frankie, we know they have a mechanical leg at least)

Bloodgood’s office looks just about how I expected it to, no Nightmare in sight though... where is the Horse! she’s supposed to be the headless horseman, not the horseless headmistress! Actual reason I took this screenshot was her “I hate mondays” mug though. A Big Mug for her Big Mood. I wonder if she bought it for herself or if it was a gift from the school staff lmao.

Heath’s shoes and socks being better than the entire rest of his fit. They’re really Heath, I like them.

Terrifying Trigonometry. I was not prepared for Frankie to look So Tiny compared to Clawdeen in some of these shots. Are they the only one not wearing heels? I feel like their height changes throughout the movie. The hallway could have looked better, but the coffin lockers and the swarm of bats that just flew through it are making me nostalgic nevertheless.

no straight nonsense between Clawdeen and Deuce please don’t even Tease it. I swear. I’m still hoping the Thing they’re hinting at with these two is that they’re both half human, and that’s why they were referred to Like That on the website. Please I do not want to see Clawdeen have a crush on a boy and we’ve had enough Romance Drama with Deuce in Gen 1 give him a Break.

Cleo with tinsel in her hair here, eye of Ra necklace and scarab details on her nightgown. Have we ever seen Cleo in green before? Either way, it looks really good, why did they reveal the characters with their worst outfits when they’ve got looks like these throughout the movie? Strange decisions.

Speaking of good looks, Abbey’s holographic bubble jacket? Great Decision. Love that for her.

also this look that Frankie’s got going on. White shirt with a sweater vest that has the original monster high colour scheme? Bow tie? Ripped Jeans WITH a Plaid Skirt, Tennis socks AND Dangly Neon Pink Earring?? Dead Fashion Disaster Walking. and I love them for it. reminds me of when I got to dress myself for picture day in 6th grade. Why can’t they wear all their favorite clothes all at once? They’re new to this they’re just figuring it out.

Draculaura’s little winged boots!! also the cape! Very cute, but not as cutesy as gen 1 Draculaura, which I’m really going to miss, but I think her new style and personality balances out this new gen 3 trio, so I see why they changed her this much. She was my fave as a kid, but I feel like if this came out back then, Frankie would probably be my favourite instead, this Draculaura is meant to be someone else’s favourite, if that makes sense.

y’all just stepped right into Ghoulia’s bedroom. She was trying to sleep, and you started trampling all over her things! Rude.

and then there’s this which I’m guessing is Jekyll’s lab? and... tomb? I honestly have no idea what to expect from this, but the wishful thinking part of my brain wants to say this strengthens the theory that our boys Jackson and Holt will be revealed/hinted at towards the end of the movie.

A Will Solace Character Analysis: the Underappreciated Soft Side

I've noticed many fanfictions have Will Solace OOC. So I’ve been thinking about aspects of Will’s personality fans seem to either gloss over or exaggerate. Here, this post is me doing an in-depth analysis explaining Will Solace’s canon personality in the books, and how it can sometimes differ from fanfictions. Sprinkled in this analysis are tips to fanfiction writers on how they write Will as more in-character.

There is one major aspect of Will that people seem to ignore or underemphasize. Nico best explains it when describing Will in this quote

Jason was a fighter. You could tell from the intensity of his stare, his constant alertness, the coiled-up energy in his frame. Will Solace was more like a lanky cat stretched out in sunshine. His movements were relaxed and nonthreatening, his gaze soft and far away. In his faded SURF BARBADOS T-shirt, his cutoff shorts and flip-flops, he looked about as aggressive as a demigod could get, but Nico knew he was brave under fire. During the Battle of Manhattan, Nico had seen him in action - the camp's best combat medic, risking his life to save wounded campers.

To sum it up, Will Solace is a very chill and calm character. A lot of writers make Will more irrational, impulsive, overbearing, and emotional than he actually is. Will is not the type of character to create drama unless he's, as Nico puts it, "under fire." In other words, the intense side of his personality doesn't come out unless the situation is urgent or dire.

Fans remember during the Second Giant War how he gets angry and argues with Nico over Nico's health and shadow-traveling, so many assume Will is going to be this fiery over a lot of other things regarding their relationship. For example, fanfic writers may make Will controlling or overly sensitive with Nico. However, keep in mind, Will gets heated with Nico during the Second Giant War because Nico's shadow-traveling is killing him. This is how Will describes Nico's dire state.

"Coach Hedge told me all about your shadow-travel. You can’t try that again."

"I just did try it again, Solace. I’m fine."

"No, you’re not. I’m a healer. I could feel the darkness in your hand as soon as I touched it. Even if you made it to that tent, you’d be in no shape to fight. But you wouldn’t make it. One more slip, and you won’t come back. You are not shadow-travelling. Doctor’s orders."

Will is a healer. When he touches Nico's hand, he can sense how little sleep and food Nico has been getting and how Nico's being taken over by darkness. Nico is on the verge of death and hasn't cared about his health for a long time. Nico is also stubborn about it, so Will has to be aggressive in order to save Nico's life. This aggressive behavior is not the norm for Will, but it can sometimes come out when he has to assert control in a life-or-death situation.

Will is a calming prescence. He's a diplomat. He stops violence on multiple occassions.

He's one of the few people who's able to calm Clarisse's violent rage, and he does so in a gentle manner.

Clarisse pointed her dagger at Rachel. "What about their allies, huh? Did you see that tribe of two-headed men that arrived yesterday? Or the glowing red dog-headed guys with the big poleaxes? They look pretty barbaric to me. It would’ve been nice if you’d foreseen any of that, if your Oracle power didn’t break down when we needed it most!"

Rachel’s face turned as red as her hair. "That’s hardly my fault. Something is wrong with Apollo’s gifts of prophecy. If I knew how to fix it –"

"She’s right." Will Solace, head counsellor for the Apollo cabin, put his hand gently on Clarisse’s wrist. Not many campers could’ve done that without getting stabbed, but Will had a way of defusing people’s anger. He got her to lower her dagger. "Everyone in our cabin has been affected. It’s not just Rachel."

One of the most underrated Will Solace moments is when he stops a bloody battle from happening between Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter.  

But he knew it wouldn’t do any good. After weeks of waiting, agonizing and steaming, the Greeks and Romans wanted blood. Trying to stop the battle now would be like trying to push back a flood after the dam broke.

Will Solace saved the day.

He put his fingers in his mouth and did a taxicab whistle even more horrible than the last. Several Greeks dropped their swords. A ripple went through the Roman line like the entire First Cohort was shuddering.

"DON’T BE STUPID!" Will yelled. "LOOK!"

People are so used to seeing demigods, especially male demigods, being aggressive fighters that they can't wrap their heads around a brave and strong demigod who actively tries to avoid unnecessary conflict and destruction as much as he can.

And that's Will Solace's strength: he has the ability to prevent as much harm as possible.

Will is a difficult character to write. There's a lot of dueling factors with his personality. He's calm and pacifying while also being brave and assertive. He's fun and lighthearted while also being intelligent, logical, and grounded. He's laidback while also being responsible and hardworking. He's insecure but not melodramatic. He's very caring and protective but not pushy.

Will's personality confuses Nico sometimes too.

He’d always thought of Will as easygoing and laid back. Apparently he could also be stubborn and aggravating.

The trick to writing Will is to keep in mind his default personality is a soft and lighthearted character. Writers tend to overemphasize the hard side of his personality when his default personality is actually the soft side.

Think of the relaxing, lanky cat metaphor Nico uses for him. He and Nico bicker often, and it works for Will because he rolls with everything and doesn't take things too seriously. He's able to alleviate Nico's moodiness with humor, wittiness, groundedness, and patience. Nico affectionately calls Will a "dork" because Will usually keeps things light. Interestingly enough, he's able to be lighthearted without coming across as insensitive or an airheaded goofball, the latter of which is something Nico dislikes about Percy's personality. On a related sidenote, another way writers make Will OOC is they make him too dumb or too immature. I know I mentioned to focus on Will's soft side, but be careful to avoid that too. He's a SENSIBLE, lanky cat.

The way Will keeps his composure during a stressful situation by using laughter while still being mature is expressed well in this exchange with Apollo. (Yes, Will has a lot to manage.)

It was difficult to think of this young man as my son. He was so poised, so unassuming, so free of acne. He also didn’t appear to be awestruck in my presence. In fact, the corner of his mouth had started twitching.

“Are—are you amused?” I demanded.

Will shrugged. “Well, it’s either find this funny or freak out. My dad, the god Apollo, is a fifteen-year-old—”

“Sixteen,” I corrected. “Let’s go with sixteen.”

“A sixteen-year-old mortal, lying in a cot in my cabin, and with all my healing arts—which I got from you—I still can’t figure out how to fix you.”

“There is no fixing this,” I said miserably. “I am cast out of Olympus. My fate is tied to a girl named Meg. It could not be worse!”

Will laughed, which I thought took a great deal of gall. “Meg seems cool. She’s already poked Connor Stoll in the eyes and kicked Sherman Yang in the crotch.”

The fiercer side of Will's personality comes out only when the situation calls for it; this happens sometimes when he has to be a caring family member, a responsible healer, or a warrior in a dire situation. Even when he gets more forceful, he doesn't get more forceful than he has to.

Since Will has such a balanced and lighthearted personality, what are his flaws? What are the dark sides of his personality? There are four main things that stick out.

1. He's insecure about his self-perceived lack of abilities.

"I agree," Will said. "I wish I was a better archer … I wouldn’t mind shooting my Roman relative off his high horse. Actually, I wish I could use any of my father’s gifts to stop this war." He looked down at his own hands with distaste. "Unfortunately, I’m just a healer."

2. He sometimes struggles to endure the heavy responsibilities he has as a healer and as a protector to his family.

“I got it reattached,” Will told me, his voice shaky with exhaustion. His scrubs were speckled with blood. “I need somebody to keep him stable.”

I pointed to the woods. “But—”

“I know!” Will snapped. “Don’t you think I want to be out there searching too? We’re shorthanded for healers. There’s some salve and nectar in that pack. Go!”

I was stunned by his tone. I realized he was just as concerned about Kayla and Austin as I was. The only difference: Will knew his duty. He had to heal the injured first. And he needed my help.

3. He forces himself to bottle his emotions to keep his composure.

Will laughed under his breath. “I’m terrified. But one thing you learn as head counselor: you have to keep it together for everyone else. Let’s get you on your feet."

Here's a second example.

I rested my hand on Will’s shoulder. “Don’t worry. We’ll be back by dawn.”

His mouth trembled ever so slightly. “How can you be sure?”

4. He constantly worries about his loved ones.

Nico rested his hand on Will’s shoulder. “Apollo, we were worried. Will was especially.”

In conclusion, Will Solace's personality is difficult to get correct. But don't worry, if you write Will as a laidback, witty cat in your fanfics, I guarantee he'll be more in-character than many other fanfics with Will Solace.
