Report On August Auctions
Recent data shows that the global wine market closely tracks changes in interest rates, with investors responding quickly and without delay. This suggests a heightened sensitivity to economic conditions in the past four years. With central banks expected to lower interest rates soon, we anticipate that any rate cuts could boost returns in the wine market. We’ve already seen signs of this positive trend, both globally and in our recent auction results, particularly with multi-bottle lots..
In August, we hosted a Live Auction followed by its Buy Now auction and then a special single vendor auction Cellar of a Surgeon. Here below are some highlights from our August auctions.
Bordeaux once again led the show. 2008 Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1er Cru Classe sold for $963.50, 1996 Chateau Haut Brion 1er Cru Classe followed at $940, and 1998 Chateau Palmer 3eme Cru Classe sold for $470, both 2010 Chateau Pontet-Canet 5eme Cru Classe and 2010 Chateau Montrose 2eme Cru Classe sold for $376 while 2008 Vieux Chateau Certan reached $352.50.
Italy, another star region with steady rewarding ROI(return on investment). We had both 2019 Tenuta dell’Ornellaia and 2019 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia sold for $411.25, and 2017 Marchesi Antinori Tignanello Toscana IGT reached $235. Many of our Italian collection came in multi-bottle lots, 4-bottle-lot of 2016 Conterno Fantino Sori Ginestra scored $658, and 3-bottle-lot of 2015 Elvio Cogno Barolo Vigna Elena sold for $528.75.
An icon from Spain, 2012 Vega Sicilia Unico Gran Reserva sold for $587.50 and 2016 Vega Sicilia Tinto Valbuena 5 magnum followed at $517.
From Antipodes, 2004 Penfolds Block 42 Kalimna sold for $705, while 2002 Penfolds Bin 707 sold for $329. 2015 Te Mata Estate Coleraine Scored $246.75, 2013 Te Mata Estate Coleraine magnum reached $364.25, while 2011 Craggy Range Sophia magnum sold for $235. Both 2013 Villa Maria Ngakirikiri and 2014 Esk Valley The Terraces sold for $141.
Some other bubbly highlights include,  2012 Dom Perignon Vintage Brut scored $399.50, 2009 Domaine Bruno Clavelier Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d’Orveaux 1er Cru Vieilles Vignes reached $376 while 2010 Domaine Francois Lamarche Echezeaux Grand Cru sold for $352.50, 2022 Kweichow Moutai Baijiu scored $423, great buys!
All prices include Buyers Premium excludes GST.
Our sincere thanks again to everyone who came into the sale room, and to those of you who participated via online and phone bids, please feel free to give us feedback if there’s anything we could do to make it an even better experience for you.

What to do while on Furlough?  Drink Wine and Write about it!
Hello,  it has been a long while since I wrote anything.  Busy at work and at life.  Well as everyone is experiencing, life has slowed down quite a lot since the Covid 19 outbreak.  I was lucky to keep working for one more month at home until the Company furlough almost everyone.   What to do now?  Ah yes! Time to blog again!  For anyone new to my blog, this is about wine my husband and I purchased throughout the years and we are down to about 644 wines.  Our inventory is up and down throughout the year but we stay steady at around this number.  It is just too much but everyone needs a hobby!
This article will be about a great find at a local grocery store.  I found a 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon BIN 707 Penfolds from South Australia.  This bottle of wine’s original price was around $476 and I bought it for 75% off.  I couldn’t believe my luck.  It was sitting in a clearance bin with a whole lot of other random product from the store that they were trying to offload cheap.  So technically this was not cheap but I couldn’t let it go. I do not usually see too much Cabernet coming from Australia but what I have tried I usually have enjoyed.  Penfolds is also a special place for my husband and I as we went to Australia for our honeymoon and experienced a tasting at Penfolds.
This 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon BIN 707 was getting near the end of its life.  I am glad we decided to finally open it.  On the nose, notes of blackberry, burnt caramel, and the old wood smell you usually experience with older wines. On the tongue was the taste of over ripe berries, it was actually not as woody tasting as I would have expected from the smell.  Short finish that did not last long in the mouth. The tannins slightly dried out my mouth so it made me go back for another sip, then another, then ...etc. We did enjoy my supermarket find, the lesson is always check out the clearance section in stores.  You never know what jewels you might turn up.

I don't have to tell you about this wine. I mean unless you lived under a rock for the last 40 years I don't have to tell you about this wine: you already know about this wine. I will tell you, again--as I have many times--this is my favorite wine Penfold's makes. Okay sure 389 and 707 are maybe a bigger lusher flash in the pan and Grange... well we won't even talk about. And then there's St. Henri... I have been very disappointed in the last three or four vintages I've had and some of the older wines I've opened have not progressed the way I had hoped so what does that leave? That leaves Kalimna. Now arguments have gone on forever about which one is Poor Man's Grange: St. Henri or Bin 28 and I've always felt that Bin 28 was poor man's Grange, just because of the raw fruit and spirit. I realize St. Henri was a small side project of Max's which probably more readily fits the confines of Poor Man's Grange, and Kalimna and Henri USED to be the same price, but recently the latter has doubled This thing is no exception to the classic Bin 28's... Dark and gorgeous, beautifully colored, cranking gobs and gobs of the richest most decadent floral, wood and crazy geeenbriar minty barnyard fruit, sex and lust and other unspeakable holy's spraying in all directions. Just absolute heaven to smell and then you taste it. The structure, spice and acid take fore-frame, as the ridiculous black cherry cinnamon white pepper fight for their life. Chalky and dense and stunning in ways the tannin makes you forget almost immediately about, it has the thinness of character I WANT to see in a wine like this--NOT some flabby tourist-plonk lush-life. A few of these wines I had in the late 2000's had me worried that there was a style change going on which was producing a more user-friendly wine for the masses at this price point. Delving into this 2014 has me retreating firmly from that opinion--this is straight up beautiful classic Bin 28 and something everything I've had through the 80s and 90s can identify with and be proud of. And like all of my Kalimna's, something you can put in your cellar for 20 years. 2014 @PENFOLDS #syrah #shiraz #kalimna #bin28 #southaustralia 14.5 #libbeyglass (at Penfolds Magill Estate Winery) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bws9Z2LhJhO/?igshid=pu75ggn7sfsq

Last month we placed the fake wines coming out of China under the microscope, asking our followers if they could spot the two fakes from the real deal. Alarmingly, very few people could tell the difference. Fake wines are a big concern for all wineries, and not just Australia’s most iconic brand Penfolds, according to fraud experts, 20% of all wine currently circulating the globe is fake.
With that in mind, I reached out to Australia’s Scott Evers of www.wineauthentication.com.au help us understand the world of counterfeit wine. Scott is one of only eight people globally  to be mentored by the world’s leading wine fraud expert, Maureen Downey. When fully qualified, Scott will become a TCM Master and Licensed Wine Authenticator. With Maureen’s unparalleled training backing him up, Scott offers this invaluable advice every winelover in the world should heed.
Drew (Wine Wankers): How prevalent are fake wines these days?
Scott Evers: 20% of all wine currently circulating the globe is fake (which is in line with all luxury goods). This is actually a conservative figure and the number is growing each year. It’s not just rare wines that are counterfeited, many more ‘commercial’ wines are now also being counterfeited.
Drew: What’s the easiest way to tell if a wine is fake?
Scott: A bad fake is obvious on first look…. Poor print, wrong paper, misspellings, missing info etc. ‘better’ fakes require experienced authenticators to examine bottles more closely.
Drew: Which wine is the most forged in the world?
Scott: For older wine, the most counterfeited producer is between DRC & Petrus, but Lafite and d’Yquem are up there as well. For a particular bottling of wine, 1945 Mouton is probably most counterfeited. In Asia, Penfolds Grange and Bin 707 are the most highly counterfeited, along with Lafite. The counterfeit trend today is for more current vintages and recent releases of very high-end Burgundy and Bordeaux.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Drew: Is it easier to forge wines these days with the advent of digital printing?
Scott: Yes of course
Drew: What are the top tips for buying genuine wine?
Scott: I have a number of tips but most of it is common sense
Purchase direct from the producer;
Only purchase from merchants who have zero history of selling counterfeits;
Only buy from vendors (auction houses, retailers etc) who can prove the stories of provenance they are telling or have trained authenticators either directly employed or who are a third party consulting to them. (Remember a piece of paper claiming provenance can easily be counterfeited too and this generally is NOT enough proof!);
Only buy wines that have been formally authenticated and registered in the Chai Wine Vault block chain as this guarantees the provenance for the lifetime of that bottle.  Also, look at who merchants are associated with and the company they keep. People who stand alongside merchants/people that knowingly sell counterfeits is a cause for alarm.
Drew: Why is Maureen Downey the world’s best wine fraud expert?
Scott: Many reasons, but this will give you the best info on her https://www.winefraud.com/about-us/team/maureen-downey/. [You cannot cut and paste this exert unfortunately]
Drew: What’s one secret that she’s taught you that you were blown away by?
Scott: That most infamous wine counterfeiters (Rudy Kurniawan etc) unknowingly leave a mark/footprint on their work that is evident across all of their counterfeits. So, experienced authenticators often ascertain as to where/who that fake has come from once they stumble across that common mark.
Drew: What kind of wine are counterfeiters putting in the bottles?
Scott: It varies. Some use other, lesser vintages of the same wine. Some use a combination of cheap wines and flavour additives. Some use a blend of other valuable, but certainly lesser than the bottle they are purporting to represent as authentic. Here are a couple of specific examples that Maureen Downey has come across – I.e. – Marcassin Pinot Noir + other wine, for 1945 DRC Romanee-Conti. Or Duckhorn merlot + Liberty Bay Cellars merlot, + something old for 1940’s/50’s Pomerol. One important point to note is that an unsuspecting buyer does not know what is in a counterfeited wine. This is scary when you consider there are cases where people have died from drinking counterfeited wine! I’ve had very wealthy businessman say to me “oh well, even if it’s a fake wine our VIP guests at the table will see this DRC bottle as being authentic, its more about image and impressing our clients so we will enjoy drinking the wine regardless” – You could imagine the look on their faces when I tell them the story of people dying from drinking fake wine!
Drew: Do you ever use a Coravin to test a wine to see if it’s the real deal – and if so, does it decrease the value of the wine or increase because tasting reveals the quality if good [note: Coravin is a wine preserving system that inserts a needle into the top of allowing wine to be extracted from a bottle without uncorking – it replaces the wine with an inert gas]
Scott: No never, and this is a very important point – Taste is not a measure of authenticity. No one can taste for authenticity. If they could, convicted counterfeiters like Rudy Kurniawan, Hardy Rodenstock, Kahled Rouabab, and Alexandre Lubov etc would not have been able to be so prolific! And yes – piercing with a Coravin destroys the value. Sadly, it is also now a counterfeiting technique by which people drain and refill bottles! Also, again reiterating my point above, you do not know what has been put in a counterfeit bottle of wine, so I for one would certainly not want to taste it if there were red flags to its authenticity.
Drew: Which wine brand has the best security measures in place to stop counterfeiters?
Scott: Ha, the ones counterfeiters do not know about! Maureen and all trainees are abundantly protective of the information we know, and as mentioned Maureen is teaching the very small group of TCM Certified Authenticator trainees (myself included), about the measures producers are using to counter fraud. If we make that public, it is a huge disservice to the producers we are trying to assist! In general, what I can say is that many producers layer anti-fraud technologies, and do not rely on one thing to protect them.
Drew: What’s an average day for a wine fraud investigator look like?
Scott: Not as glamourous as some people may think! Long hours, hard, exhausting and repetitious work, often dirty… but also intriguing, fascinating and you get to meet many fellow wine lovers and incredible cellars around the world! There is a lot of paperwork and repetition required for formal authentication of wines (and sadly not enough drinking), so it’s not all glamour and romance!
Drew: What are some of the tools of your trade?
Scott: Lighting, magnification, measuring, cutting, cleaning, photography…..and a deep knowledge of wine, producers, packaging, technologies/changes, classification systems, food and beverage laws in respective countries, forensic techniques etc
Drew: How expensive are you to hire?
Scott: I am not yet fully trained, so am not yet taking clients for authentication and charging yet…. It is currently being worked out in our business model, but it will be in line with what Maureen and her company charges. I will be offering many different services at different price points. My company called Wine Authentication is registered and we have a website www.wineauthentication.com.au, however I will not start taking clients until I am TCM Master Authenticator qualified and licensed.
Drew: Have you ever been wrong?
Scott: I haven’t started ‘formally’ authenticating yet. That said, I am learning from the best in Maureen Downey who to date has not been proven wrong! The TCM Formal Reporting Methods we use are thorough and exhaustive. We use a 90+ point system to authenticate each bottle, along with other inspection methods required in a laboratory.
Drew: Do you offer a money back guarantee – if so, how does that work?
Scott: Authentication is an art, not a science. I will offer my professional opinion of authenticity. Each client will be presented and agree to a personalized/tailor-made job contract. What I will do is assure clients that I will render findings that I have formally prepared to defend in a court of law, for insurance purposes etc if required. It is our expertise and the rarity of the skill set that our clients are getting.
‘20% of all wine in the world is fake’ – this expert’s guide will save you a fortune Last month we placed the fake wines coming out of China under the microscope, asking our followers if they could…

Des vertes et des bien mûres

Penfolds Grange - Wine Legendary Australia
Tanggal rilis tahunan Penfolds Grange biasanya sekitar bulan April.

Breaking News! There’s a special additional auction starting next Wednesday. We don’t often interrupt our usual auction schedule unless for good reason and this “Tale of Two Collectors” is a great reason to do exactly that! A true labour of love by two generations of the same family, this collection has been consigned from a purpose-built temperature-controlled cellar.  Plumped with wines to suit all tastes and purses, you’ll find gems from both the primary and secondary markets.
Available for a limited time August 09 – 13 online only before we head back into our usual auction schedule. Bid early to not miss out on your wines of choice.

Report on Summer Live Auction & Announcing the Date of Next Online Auction
Thanks to all our bidders and wine friends who came to the salesroom and those who participated online in the first live auction of 2023, Summer Rare & Fine Wine Live auction last Tuesday, February 7.
When the unusual summer weather outside is rather wet and windy, nothing satisfies like a bottle of quality aged fine wine. When the macroeconomic environment is also bleak, fine wine can, again, provide needed respite. Pleasingly, fine wine markets ended last year in good form and kept performing well in the past two months despite ongoing volatility in other markets and economies.
Here at The Wine Auction Room, we had a swag of online bidders who helped us to reach another great sale. 2005 Domaine de la Romanee Conti Romanee St Vivant Grand Cru took the highest hammer win on the night at $5875, followed by 2006 Petrus at $4700.
Bordeaux has seen slightly subdued performance over the past year, shadowed by the rapid growth of Burgundy and Champagne regions, although it still has delivered the most stable growth in all fine wine over the last decade. Both 2004 & 2008 Chateau Margaux 1er Cru Classe sold for $775.50. 2010 Chateau Angelus sold for $587.50, while 2010 Chateau Pichon Longueville Baron de Pichon Longueville 2eme Cru Classe scored $470. And a bottle of 68-year-old Bordeaux, 1955 Chateau Rauzan-Gassies 2eme Cru Classe sold for $423.
We had a great selection of big formats in this auction. Both 2008 Tenuta dell’Ornellaia 3000ml and 2003 Chateau Montrose 2eme Cru Classe 3000ml achieved $1762.50. 2001 Penfolds Grange Bin 95 1500ml reached $1292.50, followed by 2002 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia 1500ml at $1175. 2009 Chateau Lynch Bages 5eme Cru Classe 1500ml achieved $728.50.  2006 Marchesi Antinori Tignanello 1500ml sold for $681.50. NV Chateau Gardet & Co Chigny les Roses 6000ml scored $587.50. And 2008 Chateau Gloria 1500ml sold for $235.
Penfolds outperformed all other brands across all categories. 6 bottle OWC 2008 Penfolds Bin 95 Grange scored $4935, also a 6-bottle OWC, its 2002 vintage sold for $4371. 1996 Penfolds Kalimna Block 42 got snapped at $705, and 2007 Penfolds Bin 707 sold for $305.50.
Other highlights worth mentioning are 2003 Quinta do Noval Porto Vintage Nacional reached $1175; 1996 Domaine Jean Grivot Echezeaux Grand Cru sold for $987; and 1993 Vega-Sicilia Valbuena 5° achieved $293.75. Great buys!
All prices include Buyers Premium excludes GST.

Thanks to all of our bidders and wine friends who came to the salesroom and those who participated online in our Spring Rare & Fine Wine Live auction last Tuesday on Oct 4. The Fine Wine market is in the rudest of good health, helped by a number of great vintages from our fair shores and also those internationally. These two lots also attracted the most views and heated biding in this auction.
2008 Krug Vintage Brut led the champagne region at $822.50. Both 2002 & 2003 Dom Perignon P2 Plenitude Brut sold for $705 while 1990 Dom Perignon Brut reached $540.50, followed by 2004 Laurent Perrier Cuvee Alexandra Rose at $528.75,
One a sweeter note, 1963 Dow’s Vintage Port achieved $634.50, and both1999 Chateau d’Yquem and 1960 Taylor’s Vintage Port sold for the same price at $587.50. Other highlights include 2005 Domaine de la Mordoree Chateauneuf du Pape La Plume du Peintre Pur Grenache de la Crau got snapped at $869.50, while 1983 Paul Jaboulet Aine La Chapelle sold for $305.50. Report on August Auction & Announcing The Date of September Auction
Last Tuesday’s August Rare and Fine Live auction, with the help of our lively wine community, achieved another great sale with a 90% sell-through rate.
It was a chance for lovers of rare bottles to get their hands on some of the highly coveted old vintages and Grower Champagnes. It’s worth the mention that 1979 Bollinger RD Extra Brut sold for $963.50, while 1982 Perrier Jouet Belle Epoque Vintage Brut achieved an amazing $916.50 which set a record price.
For the second consecutive month, Sauternes led the show with 1976 Chateau d’Yquem taking the highest hammer win at an amazing $2350. And interestingly, it’s followed by a very niche name that’s foreign to most bidders though undoubtedly the rising star of our recent auctions, the No.1 Chinese spirit — Moutai; the 15YO Moutai bottled in 2006 was sold for $1175, great buy!
Always one of the strongest regions in our auctions, Australia again achieved top hammer prices in the red wine category. 1998 Penfolds Grange Bin 95 reached $916.50, followed by 1996 Penfolds Block 42 Kalimna Cabernet Sauvignon at $846, 1999 Henschke Hill of Grace Shiraz at $763.75 and 2010 Penfolds Bin 707 at $728.50 (another record for us). Meanwhile the 2002 Chateau Mouton Rothschild sold for $799, followed by 2003 Chateau Haut Brion at $775.50. Rhone was also well represented with 2001 Guigal La Landonne Cote Rotie hammering $728.50 while 2000 Domaine Pegau Cuvee da Capo got snapped at $705.
  All prices include Buyers Premium.
Our sincere thanks again to everyone who came into the sale room last Tuesday, and to those of you who participated via online and phone bids, please feel free to give us feedback if there’s anything we could do to make it an even better experience for you.
There will be some changes for our next online auction as we continually set new standards in the New Zealand Rare and Fine Wine landscape. Be sure to check out these changes when the EDM arrives.
