Chapter 61

- You didn’t eat anything – Laurence said to Keanu who was spending Christmas at their house.

- Sorry, I shouldn’t have come to spoil your mood… - his friend was watching his plate.

- Would you be spending Christmas alone? You have no girlfriend, no kid… - Gina began to speak sympathetically.

- Thanks for also reminding me of it! The reason why I’m not with my parents is exactly so nobody reminds me of Jennifer and Eva…

The woman was appalled and ashamed – How could she say exactly this after he just broke up with his girlfriend after their baby girl was still-born?! – she thought.

- Sorry, I didn’t say it to remind you… - she stammered.

- I’m even better off leaving – the man stood up – I’m just spoiling your mood… - he said shyly, and nicked off without saying goodbye, before they could have stopped him.

His friend put on his coat, and tried to go after him but didn’t catch up with him so called him on the phone.

- He doesn’t answer – he said aghast.

His girlfriend looked at him, startled, still sitting at the table.

- You just don’t believe he wanna commit suicide? – she asked that way like she thought he is stupid.

- I don’t know. He had two losses at the same time… - Laurence answered that way like he wouldn’t have even realized Gina’s tone.

- Three calamities happened to you at fourteen, you still didn’t commit suicide, just started to use drug – the woman went up to him to reassure him – As an addition, then you were at your hardest age – she took his shoulders behind him.

- You’re right – the man turned towards her – But you still shouldn’t have mentioned Jennifer and Eva…

His girlfriend indignantly looked at him.

- I just wanted to make him stay, and suddenly nothing else came into my head! – she said angrily.

- But you pushed him away with this! – her partner said furiously, too.

- Sorry, next time I won’t even begin to speak! – Gina went into the room.

Laurence went after her.

- Sorry, I didn’t wanna vent it on you, I’m just having fears for Kiki! – he said.

- Apparently he’s more important to you than me! You’re constantly with him, and now you care about him more than me! – the woman said indignantly – You also told him your druggy past and unwanted kid first!

- I believed we were already past it.

- I believed it, too.

- I only nowadays care about him more, when this happened to him – the man said firmly.

- Doesn’t seem like that to me.

- Why? Say an example when I dealt with him more than with you!

- I’ve told you already. When you told him your druggy past and Mike first – his girlfriend said firmly.

- Now why do you suddenly have a problem with it again?!

- ‘Cause nowadays it’s like I’m not your partner but him!

- I don’t know… - Gina reflected with arms folded, looking at the floor.

Next day, Laurence went over to Keanu’s place, and after going home, he called Bruce on the phone because they had talked a long time ago. With Gina, he didn’t feel like dealing because she was still sulking.

After that, he was reading a comic book; during it, he was listening to jazz and classic rock.

The woman said that he was listening to the music too loudly, and she couldn’t be watching her series.

The man went to ride the motorcycle; during it, he was listening to blues.

He went home in the evening; at home, he was watching an informative show; during it, his girlfriend was cooking dinner.

They had dinner in awkward silence, wordlessly, then Laurence was reading a Paulo Coelho-book, took a shower, meditated, and went to sleep.

Until New Year’s Eve, he met with Keanu every day. On New Year’s Eve, they only didn’t meet because his friend didn’t feel like celebrating.

They were celebrating in New York, with Gina’s siblings, and the friends of both of them.

In February, they went to the Black Reel Awards because Laurence was nominated for an award as the best actor, for his playing in The Matrix, and in June, they went to the Saturn Awards because he was nominated for the award of the best supporting actor; but he didn’t get any of the awards. As an addition, his own movie didn’t get to the cinemas because during post-production, some people from the hood mafia, burglarized the studio. Maybe they did it because the movie told too much about them. Laurence had never felt acting this dangerous. He was planning to move to London within two years, and hang up his fiddle. Anyway, he liked the city so much since he had shot a movie there, so they went there a lot. Beside that, he opened a journal office in Manhattan so they moved to another New York house which was closer to it.

- Where are you going now? To the cigar club again? – Gina asked one weekend. Laurence was already also a member of a cigar club in New York, with some other actors.

- And I’m going shopping. By the way, what’s your problem with the cigar club? It can help me in giving up using cigarettes – the man said in the doorway.

- Who said that I had a problem with it? Apparently you can occupy yourself well since I've been constantly working in New Zealand. I don’t even know why I came home for the weekend! – the woman expanded her arms.

- I don’t even know when I was in the club last time!

- And of course you’ve got to go exactly on the weekend.

- My fellow actors have time then! – her partner expanded his arms, too.

- And they are more important to you than me.

- I just told you that I haven’t been there for a long time! And why are you filming in New-Zealand again?!

- And why didn’t you come with me?

- Here are my kids and my journal office!

- Why did you have to open that journal office exactly now?!

- So you think that the journal office is more important to me than my kids! I’ve got to stay here only because of them too!

- It’s interesting, till now, you still wanted to move to London! Or what do you think, would Hajna and the kids go with you, too?!

- No. I would go only with you. But I changed my mind. Because of them and because of you, because you don’t wanna come, either – Laurence said firmly.

His girlfriend was watching the floor, reflecting, with arms folded. She didn’t know what to say to that. She didn’t even know if she wanted to make peace with the man already. She was missing him already but her pride was too powerful.

- If it’s necessary, I go with you to New Zealand, and come home only once a week, to the kids and to the office. If you want, I won’t go to the cigar club now either, just let’s make peace – her partner continued.

Gina’s eyes kindled, startled, then she kissed him.

- Are you sure? – she asked after it.

- I’ve been missing you already for a very long time past – Laurence said, and they began kissing. They embraced each other, fondling each other, went upstairs, to the bedroom, and took off each other’s clotes, they were fondling and kissing each other’s body, and making love through two hours.

Gina went back to the filming location with Laurence, and the man only came home every week for the Fridays and Saturdays, to his journal office and to his children.

- Will you marry me? – Laurence asked Gina in February, in a restaurant.

- Already yes – the woman laughed happily, and the man put the same ring to her finger which he bought her a long time ago. He held it for this occasion.

Gina started to play in a new series that’s filming location was in the USA, partly in Los Angeles, and Laurence already signed the covenant to play in The Matrix 2 before he read the script. Gina got a tiny part in it, too. The martial exercise had been going on for the movie already since November; since then, the man couldn’t always be there with her in New Zealand but they met every weekend.

The exercise came to an end in July. By that time, Laurence’s arm broke like some other major actors had some injuries, too. But the man’s fortieth birthday was celebrated, and they went to Tom’s wedding with Penelopé Cruz. Tom got divorced from Nicole this year, after a long proceeding that lasted for two months until the divorce was officially through. And Martin got a Golden Globe which was celebrated, too. With this much partying, Laurence didn’t feel less young at all by turning forty. He even felt so young that started studying at the Howard University, he always wanted to be a doctor, anyway, and he decided to have a PhD diploma of History, because it so much interested him beside to science, what for it would be necessary to count well which he’s not good at, on the other hand, he loves his country and likes that it’s possible to learn from the past of history.

The Matrix 2’s filming had already started. Keanu’s girlfriend Syme died in a car accident, and Laurence was dealing with him more again than with Gina, to be his anchor. Keanu is such a good man that he didn’t ask for so much horror to happen to him, and his friend felt like he deserved that he was his support. And his partner already only saw in it how good a man he is, too. The woman didn’t have much part in her new series so she was also there in the movie’s filming locations when they weren’t filming her short scene. Laurence talked to his children every week, and when the filming was in California, he also went home to them for the weekend, with Gina.

The filming of Matrix’s third part started immediately after the second part, and immediately after that, one day after his forty-first birthday, Laurence had to join his next movie’s filming which was already lasting for a month. In this one, he was also playing a leading role. But the filming came to an end already in September, and immediately after that, they had their wedding with Gina in New York.

They went for a honeymoon to Hawaii, only for a few days, because Laurence’s next filming had already started, in Boston, Chelsea, Charlestown, Canton, other parts of Massachusetts and Los Angeles. The filming already came to an end in November but Gina plentifully had roles, too, in series in California, all year. Then he was studying a lot. They were living in their Los Angeles house but Laurence met with Langston, Montana and Mike every weekend. Langston started writing poems which were even published. The man was very proud of him, and when Laurence and Gina lived in New York, then Langston and Montana lived with them, too. Montana wanted to be an actress so after a while; from then, she lived with them then when they lived in Los Angeles. Her father said to her that it was a lot of work to become an actress, and acting was also a lot of work, but she didn’t give it up that one day, she was going to be an actress. But she was still only eleven years old so she couldn’t do anything about it yet. But she was already very happy because Laurence is so rich so he gave her everything. They got the best of everything with Langston and Mike, and traveled all around the world.

Next year, Gina played in her new series all year in the future too, she also had a movie role, and started to play in one more series, but she hardly had any part in it.

- Hi guys, I’ve come home! – the woman came in through the door cheerfully in December, after the movie’s filming which started in October and was partly there, in Los Angeles.

- Hi! – her husband also came out joyously, and kissed her. Montana was upstairs, in her room, and didn’t hear that her stepmother had come home.

After Gina had unpacked, she cooked dinner with Laurence, then the man spoke to Montana that the dinner was ready, and they were eating together.

The woman was telling about the filming when she was the third chief cast, and the twelve-year-old girl was even more feeling like she wanted to be an actress.

- Dad, will you have me enrolled in an acting course?! – she asked enthusiastically.

- I won’t have you enrolled only because now you liked Gina’s filming – her father said emphatically.

Montana was sulkily eating on, then went upstairs to her room, to use the internet.

Laurence and his wife went shopping, then sent the girl to sleep, took a shower, made love, and fell asleep.

It was winter holiday so Montana didn’t go to school the next day. She went to one of her girlfriends, and Laurence and Gina were watching TV and drinking chocolate milk because they didn’t feel like going anywhere because it was cold.The girl didn’t come home for lunch either so they invited their common friend Whitney Huston to eat. She was two years younger than Laurence, she used to use drugs, too, and mostly donated for poor children so since Laurence is an UNICEF ambassador, they also had a common topic because of it, and she also had a common topic with Gina because of her singer past.

After lunch, Lemuel came with his family, and they were eating together in the living room, and for dinner, Montana had come home.

They spent Christmas in New York like usual because Laurence’s and Gina’s families were there, too. They spent one day with the family of either of them, and spent the other day with the other’s family. After that, they went back to Los Angeles because Gina’s next filming was partly there, in one episode of a series, so they were living with Montana in the future too. They were also spending New Year’s Eve with her, and with the friends of all of them.

In February, Laurence was nominated for NAACP Image Awards for his playing in The Matrix Reloaded. The award ceremony was on March 6; they went with Gina but he didn’t get the award this time either.

Gina played in one more movie, but she hardly played in it, and Laurence’s next filming started already on April 5, in Canada and Detroit, Michigan. His wife went with him to Canada to the filming location, and when the man was filming in Detroit, he went home every weekend. The filming lasted till June 30. Then the filming of Gina’s next movie started, too, in California, and it came to an end on August 26. Both of them were playing leading roles so they only could be meeting on the weekends then too. Gina played in two more movies but she didn’t have much part in them.

- Tom divorced again, and our filming’s already beginning in The Netherlands – the man said cheerlessly to his wife. The movie was being made by Cinema Gypsy, Laurence was one of the co-stars, and Gina played in it, too, but he pitied his friend. He’s also such a good man like Keanu, he’s helped so many people but he got divorced already for the umpteenth time.

- Laurence, he has other friends too! – the woman kissed him, and went cooking.

They cooked their last dinner at home together. They were in New York then, and Langston was living with them but he had a girlfriend already, and he wasn’t home too much.

- Hello, I’m back. It’s my girlfriend, Loretta – the sixteen-year-old boy came home for dinner with the girl.

- Hi! – Laurence shook hands with her – This is my wife Gina – he introduced the woman.

- Hi! – Gina shook hands with her, too, smiling – Come to have dinner! – she called them to the table that was already laid , and Gina nervously put mac and cheese on it when they had sat down.

Loretta was nervous, too.

- Since when have you two been together? – the woman asked during getting some of the food to herself. Suddenly, a different question didn’t come into her head. She hadn’t had any children, let alone a teenager, so she hadn’t had experience in it about how to behave then.

Langston was uncomprehending, looking at her – She could know the answer already – he thought.

Laurence looked at her, surprised, too.

The girl didn’t understand the situation.

- For a half year – she said shyly.

They began eating wordlessly. The adults were considering what to also ask about Loretta. Gina didn’t know what to ask, and the man was abashed like usual.

- And how old are you, Loretta? – Laurence asked during eating.

By choice, the boy would have told him that he had told it to him, too, just he forgot it.

- I’m sixteen, too – the girl smiled shyly.

- And what do you study? – the man asked.

- I study ballet, too. We go to the same school.

- I’ve told it to you, too – Langston said sullenly.

By choice, his father would have told him that he didn’t remember all of his girlfriends, she wasn’t the first one who he has talked about.

- And what do you like about ballet? – the woman asked during eating, to also talk.

- It’s dead beautiful – Loretta said during eating, too.

- But it’s also very hard – Laurence said firmly.

- Yeah.

- And what do you like about Langston?

The girl was surprised at this question.

- He's much tougher than the other ballet-guys - she said, being taken aback.

- Is this everything? - Gina smiled.

Loretta was even more appalled. Evidently she also loved the boy's look, Langston became a very handsome teenager boy but she still couldn't say it during the first joint dinner...

- Why am I here?! - the boy asked angrily to save his girlfriend.

- You’ve been here till now too, on the other hand, you took Loretta here now for the first time – his father said emphatically.

- How come she’s here now for the first time? Till now, where did you two meet? – his wife asked meaningfully. Laurence was curiously waiting for the answer, too.

The teenage couple looked at them, frightened – They surely believed they concealed something – they thought. They didn’t understand what they could think, but they didn’t want to tell them the real cause of what the girl was ashamed of.

- She’s just dead shy, she hasn’t met with any stars yet – Langston said.

The adults laughed in relief.

- We don’t consider ourselves stars – the woman smiled, taking Loretta’s hand.

- So that’s OK – the girl laughed awkwardly.

After the dinner, the boy accompanied his girlfriend home, then went home to his mother because Laurence and Gina were going to set off for the Netherlands the next morning. It came into their head then that he had surely introduced the girl to Hajna, he only hadn’t introduced her to them. Since 1993, she’s already been working only as a fitness trainer, and hadn’t played in movies since 1991.

- This dinner was funny – Gina laughed when they went into the bedroom to sleep.

- I would have never thought that one day, we would have disadvantage by we’re famous – her husband guffawed, and laid in the bed – What do you think, will she come to our house in the future too? – he got frightened after it – Maybe there’s some problem with that girl what Hajna countenances – he said seriously.

- Did you see it like she doesn’t wanna come anymore? – the woman asked seriously, too, laying into the bed.

The man shrugged.

- No. In the end, I think she’s just shy but she’ll get used to us – he laughed again.

Their plane started to the Netherlands the next day, at half past nine. Laurence was driving during the ride to the airport; during it, he was singing the songs which were on the radio.

On the plane, one of Keanu’s movies, John Wick was broadcasted what Laurence liked very much, and he was happy about his friend’s career getting to the apex again by the movie.

They lodged in a beautiful luxurious hotel as usual, which they didn’t even notice anymore after their own luxurious houses.

- I hardly play in the movie. What will I do here, alone? – Gina whined when they went into their room.

- That’s easy for you to say! I’m the co-star, I’m working all day, and your voice is gonna be in an episode of a comic book-series! – the man laughed - Besides, the filming of that movie which I’m also a producer of, isn’t interesting for you? – he took his wife’s waist.

- Yes, it’s interesting for me! – the woman kissed him – But comic book-series still aren’t interesting for me! – she laughed, and began unpacking her clobbers.

- Then why did you undertake it? – her husband asked with arched eyebrows while beginning unpacking, too.

- Money that comes easily - Gina shrugged with a blouse in her hands.

- Isn’t that money enough to you how much we have? – Laurence was surprised.

The woman sat down on the bed.

- I’d like a kid, and if we have a kid, we have less money for your beloved clothes and traveling around the world by motorcycle – she said bluntly.

The man dropped the shirt that was in his hands.

- Do you think the reason why I don’t want a kid is because we would have less money?! – he tilted his head to one side indignantly.

- You would also have less time to go shopping and riding the motorcycle… - his wife looked at the floor.

- I simply just don’t have time and energy for more kids! You’ve also said that adolescence is the hardest. They need me now the most.

- It’s the hardest for them psychically, but they are already more self-supporting than before! – Gina said emphatically – They’re already much less at home, and they’re with us a lot less!

- We’re gonna have a kid when they’re older – her husband said firmly.

- And by what is it gonna be better then?! Montana’s gonna be in harder and harder age now! She will be more and more beyond control!

- Why do you want so many kids? Why do you need more problems? I moved in with the kids partly exactly because you’ve wanted a kid! – Laurence outstretched his arms uncomprehendingly.

- I’d like to have my own kid! – Gina shouted with tearful eyes – I’d like such a kid who’s from me and my love, not to raise somebody else’s kids! I also raise Langston and Montana with pleasure but I’d like an own kid too!

- We’re gonna have our own kid later – the man left the room brokenly.

This child-subject again! – he thought – That was what they quarreled with Hajna over, too, and they also broke up with Victoria because of that! – He only agreed to have a common child with Gina one day because he didn’t want to lose her too. He wanted a common child with her, too, but for the time being, he couldn’t imagine how he would have time for it.

The filming continued in Louisiana, exactly midway between Los Angeles and New York.

- Where will we go home this weekend? – Gina sat down on the bed tiredly on the first Friday, in the evening, after filming. When they were filming in the Netherlands, they couldn’t go home, and now they planned to go home every weekend.

- Already it fatigues you, to think about going home to one of the kids, I see – Laurence sat down next to her.

- I’m simply just tired – the woman said emphatically – You use every chance to talk me out of having a child.

- Why isn’t it good for you if we have a kid later?! – the man stood up.

His wife stood up, too.

- How do you know that later, you’ll have time for it? – she asked, hands on hips.

- I’d like a kid, too. I only know that now I don’t have time for it yet – her husband said firmly.

Next day, they went home to Los Angeles because they had met Montana longer before Langston; she lived there when they were home.

The cheerful girl brightened them while they were home, and they also met with a few of their Los Angeles-friends which also made them feel a lot better. But the man was mostly studying for the university.

After they had gone back to Louisiana, Laurence was buried in work again, and Gina talked on the phone with her family when they weren’t shooting her few scenes.

Next weekend, they went home to New York because then Langston slept at their house. There they met with their parents too.

Later, the filming continued in Morocco where they couldn’t come home from again.

- We can’t go home to the kids again. Superb – Laurence arrived in the quarters sullenly.

His wife was angrily unpacking because the man said again that he didn’t have enough time for his children – He surely said it to also shadow it out that he wouldn’t have time for one more child at all – she thought.

- And what’s your problem? – his husband asked, still sullenly.

Gina didn’t answer, she just continued unpacking, crying – Accordingly he really didn’t have time for any more children – she thought.

Laurence went up to her.

- What’s the matter with you? – he asked, startled.

- What do you think? – his wife asked in an expressionless voice.

- I’ve told you that we’re gonna have a kid – her husband said in a determined voice.

- I think we’re not gonna have it.

- Why do you think so?

Then it came into his head. Last time, he said he only knew that he didn’t have time for any more child, and now he also complained about he didn’t even have enough time for this many children – From then, he was forced to undertake less work to have time for more children as soon as possible, otherwise, he would also lose Gina because of this like he lost Victoria because of this at that time – he thought, frightened.

He broke down and sat down on the bed.

- From now, I’ll undertake less work – he began to speak – We’ll have time for more kids – he said, frightened.

- You’re gonna change your mind, anyway – the woman answered sullenly.

- I don’t want any more kids until I have more time.

This quarrel would never come to an end – the woman thought, and went back to the room.

She continued unpacking, crying; during it, she was reassuring herself that the man might have less work one day, and they would have time to have a child.
