Urban Design Concept of the Day
The 15 Minute City Concept
The 15 Minute City is the concept that everything a person needs including housing, grocery stores, restaurants, schools, clinics, parks and shopping should be within a 15 minute walk or bike ride of people's homes. This is to be accomplished by implementing mixed use zoning and greater housing density. The 15 minute city concept is promoted as areas that are 15 minute cities are shown to healthier for the people who live in them, have strong communities, and are better for the environment as walking and cycling are better for you than automobiles. The concept while frequently discussed as a goal to reach does already exist in places like Centercity Philadelphia, the Loop and Near Northside of Chicago, Manhatten and the downtown and Capitol Hill neighborhoods of Seattle as well as many European cities. It has been proposed and risen to prominence as an alternative to the current suburban model of development

News from Marseille, 23 June.
The mayor of Marseille hopes for new announcements regarding transportation, the port, and security during Emmanuel Macron's forthcoming visit.
The visit will likely include a focus on security and drug trafficking, with the president meeting with the families of victims and visiting a school undergoing renovation.
The President last visited Marseille in September 2021.
2. French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne has announced that young people aged 17 will be able to obtain their driver's license from January 2024, and that financial aid for apprentices to obtain their license will be extended to students in vocational high schools.
The move has been criticized by road safety advocates who argue that it contradicts environmental concerns and that encouraging accompanied driving would be a safer alternative.
Borne also announced that young people aged 18 to 20 engaged in national service or youth engagement contracts will receive free train passes for a month.
3. The pedestrianization of the Cours Julien neighborhood in Marseille was delayed due to a disagreement between the City and the Metropole over the installation of an automatic bollard on Rue Poggioli, but has recently been resolved.
The pedestrianization of both neighborhoods is expected to be completed in 2023, with the possibility of a September or end-of-year completion for the Cours Julien neighborhood.
4. Marseille is experiencing a heatwave with temperatures reaching up to 32°C.
5. European cruise ships emitted more sulfur dioxide than one billion cars in 2022, causing harm to ecosystems and human health.
Barcelona was the most polluted port in Europe due to cruise ship emissions, followed by Civitavecchia, Piraeus, Palma Mallorca, and Lisbon.
Governments and ports should take measures to reduce cruise ship pollution, including requiring ships to connect to electric networks and encouraging the adoption of zero-emission technologies.
6. The summer season brings a variety of festivities in the south of France, including a romantic night under the stars in Seillans, a piano recital in Plan de la Tour, and traditional Provençal celebrations in Pont-de-l’Étoile.
The Nuit Romantique event in Seillans, organized by the association of the Most Beautiful Villages of France, features music, dance, stargazing, and food tastings.
The festival in Pont-de-l’Étoile highlights the traditions of Provence, including concerts, a fair, the famous soupe au pistou, and the sale of garlic, a staple ingredient in Provençal cuisine.
7. The controversy over the end of the public service mandate granted to the Château de la Buzine association, chaired by Nicolas Pagnol, has caused political response in the Departmental Council of Bouches-du-Rhône.

Not to be undemocratic but we need to just stop doing extensive public consultations for public projects in Ireland because I'm really tired of NIMBYism gutting important projects. Sorry I don't care that Margaret from Terenure doesn't want a bus lane or a cycle lane going by her house, she can fucking deal with it.
It feels like getting any good infrastructure work done here is always an uphill battle with retired homeowners who have nothing better to do than bitch about everything. Literally just stop caring what they think. You can't let some hyper-local opposition for stupid reasons kill a project that's going to benefit the city as a whole.
#it's just exhausting#every pedestrianisation proposal#every cycle lane#every Public Transportation project#gets held up by public consultation and endless alterations to please these people#until it's either delivered years behind schedule and significantly watered down#or just killed completely

15 minute cities aren't bad as a thought bubble, but we've got to remember to design cities for how people actually live, want to live, and that take into account what's actually there. That means we still need a mix of housing styles, where possible.
I've noticed that at the moment, where I live at least, they're pretty good at local detail, but less so at integrating different places.
A little community on a rail line where you've got shops, offices and apartments all next to one another is all well and good, but if that's all you've got near all the stations, then any time someone wants to go out to an entertainment venue, community centre, etc, they've still got to hop in the car, or navigate a much slower bus route.
As an idea, it's incomplete unless combined with bigger picture thinking.
#the other problem is sometimes you just need to be able to get a vehicle somewhere. sometimes There's equipment to move#or the fact that for so many resons our cities and towns aren't going to all gain perfect public transport overnight#it's easy to go too far and design carless cities#when really quieter traffic and pedestrianised centres are best to go for#plus it's possible to forget that traveling by car train bus etc is a human experience that should not be made#too hard or unpleasant if not necessary#sometimes it's not a disaster if there's somewhat of a barrier between two parts of a town as long as that barrier is very permiable#even a normal street has buildings you can't walk through#a well integrated railway doesn't need to be that different

Speaking of jaywalking once in Florida my dad crossed the freeway to get to a cafe or mcdonalds or something and everyone was mortified that he did so. It was like opposite his hotel and he refused to get a car bc why tf would you do that when its like 50 metres away.
#this happened b4 i was born so this story is second hand#but honestly i would've done it with him if i was there#what the fuck is jaywalking#i mean crossing the freeway isnt the best idea we dont cross the motorway generally#usually in pedestrianised places with a motorway or duel carriageway going thru we will have a bridge or underpass#but come onnnn i aint getting a fucking cab

I was initially just gonna write in the tags but I got mad lol so here are some more pictures of alexandra road
i’m obsessed with the politics of architecture it’s not even a far stretch to say that one of the biggest hurtles a socialist project in the united states would have to face isn’t even the police state or the bourgeois media it’s the landscape
#is that the alexandra road estate?#of all the examples to pick of 'ugly' brutalism they've picked the alexandra Road estate?#it's grade 2* listed and for good reason#it looks like that because it was designed to give people the best homes possible#it's in the middle of the city and yet was designed to give everyone a patio or garden#the street is pedestrianised with a carpark underground and did i mention its in the middle of London? this is camden#the big difference between alexandra road and the other buildings you show? alexandra Road was built to help people#those other buildings were built to show off#if they wanted to make a like to like comparison they could have shown another council estate built to a different style#but this isn't about architectural style
