Should I disguise myself as a somber old-fashioned girl, gawky Mlle Humbert, and put up my tent on the outskirts of Camp Q, in the hope that its russet nymphets would clamor: "Let us adopt that deep-voiced D.P.," and drag the sad, shyly smiling Berthe au Grand Pied to their rustic hearth. Berthe will sleep with Dolores Haze!

A hard-hitting, realistic look at the undercover police world with a bitter taste of the cases that they work. Jason Patric and Ray Liotia play the parts of two Detroit police offers tasked with bringing the killers of a fellow undercover officer to justice. Dark, gritty and overwhelming, Narc doesn’t sugarcoat law enforcement but somehow keeps the experience real without turning the opinion of the viewer against the officers, who often bend the rules as far as they can without going over the edge. Excellent drama, along with some very realistic dialog and some top-notch acting brings this title to the forefront of its niche. I guarantee you won’t figure out “who done it” until the very end. Definitely not a date night movie, or something to watch while the kids are around, but something perfect for a rainy afternoon flick with the guys.

Did J.K. Rowling Fail the Lolita Test?
The functionally illiterate youth are canceling her for praising the classic novel.
By Kat Rosenfield
July 2, 2024
Like so many other digital-age absurdities, this one originates with a millennial who is mad at J.K. Rowling. Here’s what happened: in the year 2000, in an interview with BBC Radio 4, Rowling praised the novel, saying, “[A] plot that could have been the most worthless pornography becomes, in Nabokov’s hands, a great and tragic love story.” Rowling’s sentiments about Lolita are not unique; Stanley Kubrick and Dorothy Parker famously felt the same, and my own copy even has a blurb on it from Vanity Fair, calling it “the only convincing love story of our century.”
Aaron Gwyn, a professor in the English department at UNC Charlotte, was mystified by the surge of moralizing discourse surrounding Lolita: “It’s absurd. Nabokov would be horrified by the idea of his art as any kind of a moral test,” he said to me. “He didn’t need a 400-page novel to tell us that a pedophile is bad. But he saw very clearly America’s worship of youth, and America’s lust after the girl—the nymphet—as an archetype, and he turns that inside out. Humbert is a monster, but he’s also seductive, in the prose, the humor. . . if the reader wasn’t on some level charmed, in the witchcraft sense, it wouldn’t be effective.”
I don’t like to engage in youth-bashing (some of my best friends are youths, and rumor has it I used to be one myself), but this seems to be a particular problem for members of the under-40 set—people who, like Kempner, appear utterly confounded not just by the difference between depiction and endorsement but by the expression of any thought that contains two or more moving parts. At the risk of stating the obvious, Rowling’s praise for the transformative power of Nabokov’s writing does not amount to an assertion that she found the plot of Lolita literally romantic.

1980s Horror Film Character Names
I totally forgot I’d started making this last year! I think I never posted it because I wanted to find more names, but there’s already a decent amount and I don’t feel like being that tedious about names right now lol.
It’s first & last names (separated for mix & match potential) of characters from iconic late 1970s & 1980s horror movies. I think I started looking for cheesier B-movies to pull from, but yeah it’s been a whole year so I forget.

Hallmark Actor Spotlight - Kevin McGarry (Part 2)
A Song For Christmas (2017)
Directed by RC Newey
Written by Betsy Morris and Joie Botkin
Starring Becca Tobin, Kevin McGarry, Dendra Leigh Timmins, Paula Boudreau, David Keeley, James McGowan, Zarrin Darnell-Martin, Jason P. Paul, Ted Jefferies, and Brian Roworth.
Premiered November 11, 2017 on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, part of The Most Wonderful Movies of Christmas.
Synopsis:
Country music’s rising star, Adelaide Kay (Becca Tobin), is as beautiful as she is talented and her hit single, “Heartbeat for You,” is climbing the charts. She’s even been romantically linked to Cole Wyatt (Ted Jefferies), country music’s hottest star, and the two are set to perform at The Palace, a dream venue for any act. But even though Adelaide should be overjoyed with her success, she’s having trouble with the sacrifices she’s made to keep her fame on the rise, like pretending the romance with Cole is real and being so busy she hasn’t seen her parents in nearly a year. Against her better judgment, she always listens to her manager Russell Holmes (James McGowan). She limits what she eats, allows the tabloids to spread rumors about her and Cole and gallivants around the country performing on talk shows. Worst of all, she’s stopped writing her own songs, singing only those Russell has others write for her, even though she feels the lyrics are commercial and lack the heart she once poured into her own music.
But Russell does have a heart, and on the way to Philadelphia for an appearance on “The Talk,” he stops the tour bus at a bed and breakfast in Virginia so Adelaide can rest. The bucolic setting is perfect for writing so later that night, she sets to work on a Christmas song by the fire. But try as she might, all Adelaide ends up with is a blank page, until she hears an inspirational tune coming from an acoustic guitar across the street. Walking toward the music, she finds a cute guy playing the song and their attraction is instant. In fact, if Russell didn’t text her asking where she is, the two would have certainly wanted to get to know each other better.
But people with a connection have a way of reconnecting and the next day, after Adelaide says she’ll be in her room on the bus, she spots people preparing for a Christmas lighting ceremony and goes to check it out. Thinking she’s on the bus, Russell tells the driver to hit the road and Adelaide (with no cell phone) is left behind. It’s a happy accident, because Baylee Lapp (Kendra Leigh Timmons), who lends Adelaide her cell, takes “Addie” to the family Christmas tree farm to wait. There, Addie meets Baylee’s brother Dillon (Kevin McGarry), who happens to be the cute guy from before! He knows Addie is Adelaide Kay but keeps her secret from his parents and sister.
Welcomed by the Lapps with open arms, Addie soon falls not only the family and the town, but also for Dillon, and he is just as smitten with her. That’s why it’s okay with everyone when the roads are snowed over and the tour bus doesn’t arrive right away. It gives Adelaide a chance to help the Lapps turn their struggling farm into a holiday destination. It also gives Dillon time to realize he wants to pursue his music full-time and, most importantly, it gives Adelaide and Dillon a chance to write a beautiful Christmas song that is sure to be a hit.
Winter Castle (2019)
Directed by Marita Grabiak
Written by Barbara Kymlicka
Starring Emilie Ullerup, Kevin McGarry, Meghan Heffern, Habree Larratt, and Melanie Mullen.
Premiered January 5, 2019 on the Hallmark Channel, part of Winterfest.
Synopsis:
Born and raised in sunny California, Jenny (Emilie Ullerup) is thrilled when her sister Meg (Melanie Mullen) decides to have a destination wedding at an ice hotel. Having never attended a frosty wedding, Jenny is excited to sign up for the full experience. Her sister is just as excited to set Jenny up with the best man, Craig (Kevin McGarry) a widowed (and apparently) single dad who she claims is “perfect” for Jenny. When Jenny arrives at the ice hotel it’s even moremagical than she had imagined. But the icy décor isn’t the only thing that catches her eye – Craig is everything Meg had said he is and Jenny finds herself instantly smitten by Craig and his sweet daughter Sara (Habree Larratt) – both of whom are just as excited as Jenny about spending a holiday surrounded by ice and snow. But Jenny’s hopes of romance are quickly dashed when she is introduced to Craig’s “plus one,” Lana (Meghan Heffern), who arrives in faux furs and slightly orange from too much self-tanner.
Meg is mortified that her matchmaking efforts have been dashed by Lana’s unexpected appearance. Disappointed, Jenny gives up on Craig but doesn’t give up on experiencing everything the hotel has to offer. Between their mutual excitement over their surroundings and their duties as bridesmaid and best man, Jenny and Craig find themselves constantly thrown together – making it hard for Jenny to ignore their obvious connection. While they both make the most of the many fun and exciting adventures like ice sculpting, dog sledding and tubing with young Sara, Lana’s aversion to the cold has her hiding out most days in the ice hotel, fending off a cold while trying to bask under a sun lamp. Luckily, a bell hop who pines for the warmth of California is there to be at Lana’s beck and call. When the ice hotel hosts a glamorous pre-wedding party, Craig and Jenny share a dance and though she tries to fight her feelings Jenny finds herself falling in love. Not one to miss a party, Lana emerges looking as frosty as the ice sculptures and, though it crushes him, Craig does the right thing and stands by his date.
With the wedding just a day away, the cold Lana has been fending off all week takes hold and though she is loath to leave Craig alone with Jenny, Lana has had enough of the “frigid virus breeding” climate and resigns herself to return to California. Before she leaves, Craig has an honest moment with her and admits he doesn’t see a future with her. Craig and Lana part ways but Lana doesn’t have much time to be upset when the sympathetic bell hop who came toher aid all week heads back to California on her flight. Unaware that Lana has left, Jenny assumes she has lost the man of her dreams. As the maid of honor, Jenny can’t believe her eyes when on Meg’s wedding day she walks down the aisle of the ice hotel chapel and sees the best man – Craig – smiling and waiting for her, making it the best and frostiest holiday she has ever had.
Winter Love Story (2019)
Directed by T.W. Peacocke
Written by MacKenzie Austin
Starring Jen Lilley, Kevin McGarry, Mary-Margaret Humes, Laura Miyata, Joanna Douglas, Rodrigo Fernandez-Stoll, Robinne Fanfair, Nneka Elliot, and Alexander Nunez.
Premiered January 19, 2019 on the Hallmark Channel, part of Winterfest.
Synopsis:
First-time author and part-time barista Cassie Winslett (Jen Lilley) has just had her first book published, a real-life account of her biggest-ever breakup called My Heartbreak Year. At her first, and very modestly attended, book-signing, she meets successful fantasy author Elliot Somersby (Kevin McGarry) whose first two books of a trilogy are big hits. His fans love him and turn out in droves for his book signings. Cassie is scared to death of reading from her book in public, doing interviews or appearances, and that is due to her fear of being compared to her mother, Princeton Literature professor and award-winning novelist Jeannine Jordan Winslett (Mary-Margaret Humes).
Cassie is paired with Elliot for a book tour by their publisher, the strategy being that his fans and brisk sales will help jumpstart sales on Cassie’s book. Elliot is a media pro who loves reading from his books at signings, making TV appearance and doing interviews. Completely unsure of her own talent, Cassie agrees to the book tour, certain it will be her one and only. From the very start, Elliot is nothing but encouraging and supportive. Soon, we learn that super-confident Elliot has his own fear that the third book of his trilogy will not live up to the first two, and it has him stuck. He can’t seem to get the book written.
Throughout the tour, Elliot is kind and gracious to Cassie, letting her have the best rooms when they stop for the night, treating her to comfort food at his favorite roadside eateries, and being an all-around perfect gentleman. Cassie is still too caught up in her own “less than” author feelings to notice the spark between them. Elliot coaches Cassie before their appearances, and she grows stronger and more confident with each one, obvious from the great audience reception she gets. The attraction between them is growing, but when Elliot makes a planned visit in Buffalo with his ex-wife, Cassie becomes convinced that he might be working on a reconciliation and tries to put the brakes on her growing feelings for him – especially when he tells her he is staying on in Buffalo for a couple weeks following the tour.
Back at home, Cassie admits to her best friend that she fell in love with Elliot on the tour. A few weeks later, Cassie travels to Buffalo to attend an event where Elliot is receiving an award. Once again, their feelings for one another are obvious, but when Elliot thanks his ex during his acceptance speech, Cassie leaves the event, crestfallen. Certain now that Elliot is working to get back together with his ex, she attempts to put him out of her mind, and even teases the first chapter of her new book online for her growing legion of fans. However, when Cassie attempts a do-over of her first book signing at her local bookstore, Elliot surprises her and reveals the truth about why he really stayed on in Buffalo, as well as his true feelings for Cassie, whose faith in the power of love is restored with one, long-awaited kiss.

Threads Magazine, April May 2017
This issue of Threads has a lot of fine embellishment techniques which would be perfect if you have a wedding to attend this coming spring or summer, and balances them out with some more sober features.
The top photos is of a vintage suit from the 1950s with a detail on the pockets that could be moved and used elsewhere to good effect. Judith Neukam figures out how to recreate it. An article explaining double-gauze and where to find it comes from Carol J. Fresia. Saris and what you can do with the beautiful length of cloth that makes one is covered by Paula Smith-Danell who also gives us some tips on buying: some sources are more reliable than others in what they are offering. As you can see from the cover, there are directions for decorating a dress with both peacock fathers and beads caught in tiny pockets at the sleeves by Ruth Ciemnoczolowski.
If you are thinking, well, that’s nice but I am not likely to need a peacock feather dress any time soon, there are also articles on making your own exercise wear, on working with a sloper (the basic building block for drafting flat patterns), an article on shirts and collars, the trends in spring colors and fabrics, and more. In short, a lot for your money.
You can get on a news stand or here: http://www.threadsmagazine.com/

Tuna Rice Dog Treats
Bear, Laurel's lovable Labrador Retriever in the DIY Diva Mystery series, loves treats, and my dog Rocky volunteered to do a taste test for these tuna rice balls. Rocky gave them a paws up!
Although people can eat these tuna rice snacks, too, they may be a bit on the bland side since strong spices, onions, and garlic are all no-nos for dogs.
Ingredients 1/2 cup water 1 5-ounce can chunk light tuna, water packed 1/2 cup instant rice 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon Put water in saucepan. Open tuna can, leaving lid in place. Put the liquid from the tuna can into the saucepan by pressing it out with the lid. Bring to a boil. Remove from heat, add instant rice, and cover the saucepan immediately. Leave the cover on and let the rice cool to room temperature. When cooled, add the applesauce, cinnamon, and tuna and mix well. Pick up a rounded spoonful of the mixture, squeeze it so that it sticks together, and roll in a ball. Store in refrigerator for up to two days. These treats may also be frozen. If they will be frozen for a long time, wrap them individually in plastic wrap so that they won't become dry. Thaw frozen treats completely before giving them to your dog! Makes about fourteen 1-inch tuna rice dog treats.
Death by Proxy: A DIY Diva Mystery by Paula Darnell
About Death by Proxy
Death by Proxy: A DIY Diva Mystery Cozy Mystery 3rd in Series Cozy Cat Press (November 2019) Print Length ~220 Pages
With preparations for her upcoming wedding to handsome Wes Wesson, a Center City police lieutenant, on track and her DIY Bridal Crafts class at Hawkeye Haven's community center wrapped up, DIY Diva Laurel McMillan looks forward to a calm pre-nuptial week to finalize her wedding plans. There's only one problem: the week turns out to be anything but calm. Laurel and Wes narrowly escape being run down in the parking lot of their favorite restaurant. Laurel's bridal shower is interrupted by a mysterious stranger who sends Laurel's lovable chocolate Labrador retriever Bear into a frenzy, and when Laurel and Wes go to meet Lisa, their real estate agent, at a house she promised to show them, they discover Lisa's sister's body floating in the pool. Strangely, Lisa seems more concerned with selling houses than she does with her sister's death. After Lisa's mother inadvertently reveals family secrets, Laurel wonders whether Lisa could have killed her own sister. Will the mayhem and murder stop before Laurel discovers the key to the killer's game plan?
EXCERPT: “Duane Harris Wesson! Is that your idea of a proposal?” If I'd been standing, I'd have put my hands on my hips, but I was sitting beside Wes on the sofa in my den. He'd just suggested that a riverboat cruise on the Mississippi would make a great honeymoon, but he hadn't asked me to marry him! “Uh, definitely not.” My boyfriend grabbed a pillow, placed it on the tile floor in front of me, and knelt on the plush cushion. He took my hand. “Laurel, sweetheart, I love you, and I'd love for us to spend the rest of our lives together.” He fumbled in his jacket pocket for a moment before pulling out a small velvet-covered box. He opened it and took out a spectacular diamond ring. “Will you marry me?” “Yes!” I said breathlessly, and Wes slipped the stunning ring onto my finger. Bear, my chocolate Labrador retriever, had been snoozing on his bed in front of the fireplace, but sensing that something was up and not wanting to be left out, he came over and sat in front of me, next to Wes, and put his head on my lap. Wes put one arm around me and the other around Bear, as I leaned forward to kiss him. “Think I can get up now?” Wes asked. “Yes.” “Good,” He rose and sat beside me. “That's a relief. When you called me by all three of my names, I knew I had to up my game. When I was a kid, my mom used to say that to me when I was in trouble.” “Well, you're redeemed. Not many men would tolerate a dog nudging his way into a proposal. You're a very special man, and I love you madly.” Wes took me in his arms, and we managed a proper kiss before Bear began gently prodding us with his nose. “Don't worry, Bear,” Wes reassured him, as he scratched behind the inquisitive dog's ears. “You'll always be part of our family.”
About Paula Darnell
An instructor at five colleges over the years, Paula Darnell most often taught the dreaded first-year English composition classes, but she’s also been happy to teach some fun classes, such as fashion design, sewing, and jewelry making. Paula has a Bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, and a Master’s degree in English from the University of Nevada, Reno.
Like Laurel, the main character in Death by Association, Paula enjoys all kinds of arts and crafts. Some of her memorable projects include making a hat and a cape to wear to Royal Ascot, sewing wedding gowns for both her daughters, exhibiting her textile and mixed-media artwork in juried art shows, and having one of her jewelry projects accepted for inclusion in Leather Jewelry, published by Lark Books. She sells some of her jewelry and hair accessories in her Etsy shop: www.etsy.com/shop/PaulaDJewelry.
Paula’s interest in DIY craft projects and fashion led to her writing hundreds of articles for print and online national publications.
Living in a guard-gated community governed by a homeowners’ association gave Paula the idea for the setting of Death by Association. She finds that residing in an HOA community can be both a blessing and a curse. A Happy-New-Year greeting from her community association called on residents to “start the new year by reviewing your Rules and Regulations booklet,” something unlikely to top anyone’s list of New Year’s resolutions.
Paula lives in Las Vegas, Nevada, with her husband Gary and their 110-pound dog Rocky, whose favorite pastime is lurking in the kitchen, hoping for a handout.

50 Great Thrillers by Women, as recommended by 10 of the UK’s female crime writers
Sophie Hannah:
Summertime by Liz Rigbey. Follows a woman who loses her baby and whose father unexpectedly drowns. When her husband and sister close ranks against her, she begins to suspect they are lying to her.
The Spider’s House by Sarah Diamond. Also published as In the Spider’s House. When Anna Howell discovers that a 1960s child murderess was the previous resident of her old cottage, her marriage, sanity and life come under threat.
Hidden by Katy Gardner. When a young mother’s seven-year-old daughter disappears, she finds herself questioning everything in her life. Then a police officer starts asking about the murder of a woman 14 months earlier …
A Shred of Evidence by Jill McGown. DI Judy Hill and DCI Lloyd investigate the murder of a 15-year-old girl on a patch of open parkland in the centre of town.
Searching for Shona by Margaret Jean Anderson
The wealthy Marjorie Malcolm-Scott trades suitcases, destinations and identities with orphan Shona McInnes, as children are evacuated from Edinburgh at the start of the second world war.
Val McDermid:
The Franchise Affair by Josephine Tey. A teenage war orphan accuses two women of kidnap and abuse, but something about her story doesn’t add up.
Rubbernecker by Belinda Bauer. The Booker-longlisted author of Snap follows it up with the tale of a medical student with Asperger’s who attempts to solve a murder.
The Field of Blood by Denise Mina. The first in the Paddy Meehan series sees the reporter looking into the disappearance of a child from his Glasgow home, with evidence pointing the police towards two young boys.
A Fatal Inversion by Barbara Vine. Writing under her pen name, Ruth Rendell tells of the discovery of a woman and child in the animal cemetery at Wyvis Hall, 10 years after a group of young people spent the summer there.
When Will There Be Good News? by Kate Atkinson. In the third Jackson Brodie book, a man is released from prison 30 years after he butchered the mother and siblings of a six-year-old girl in the Devon countryside.
Ann Cleeves:
Little Deaths by Emma Flint. Inspired by the real case of Alice Crimmins, this tells of a woman whose two children go missing from her apartment in Queens.
The Dry by Jane Harper. During Australia’s worst drought in a century, three members of one family in a small country town are murdered, with the father believed to have killed his wife and son before committing suicide.
Devices and Desires by PD James. Adam Dalgliesh takes on a serial killer terrorising a remote Norfolk community.
The End of the Wasp Season by Denise Mina. Heavily pregnant DS Alex Morrow investigates the violent death of a wealthy woman in Glasgow.
Fire Sale by Sara Paretsky. The inimitable VI Warshawski takes over coaching duties of the girls’ basketball team at her former high school, and investigates the explosion of the flag manufacturing plant where one of the girl’s mothers works.
Sharon Bolton:
Gone by Mo Hayder. In Hayder’s fifth thriller featuring Bristol DI Jack Caffrey, he goes after a car-jacker who is taking vehicles with children in them.
Gentlemen and Players by Joanne Harris. A murderous revenge is being plotted against the boys’ grammar school in the north of England where eccentric Latin master Roy Straitley is contemplating retirement.
The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes. A time-travelling, murderous war veteran steps through the decades to murder extraordinary women – his “shining girls” – in Chicago, in this high-concept thriller.
The Wicked Girls by Alex Marwood. Two women who were sentenced for murdering a six-year-old when they were children meet again as adults, when one discovers the body of a teenager.
Apple Tree Yard by Louise Doughty. Married scientist Yvonne, who is drawn into a passionate affair with a stranger, is on trial for murder.
Sarah Ward:
A Place of Execution by Val McDermid. Journalist Catherine Heathcote investigates the disappearance of a 13-year-old girl in the Peak District village of Scarsdale in 1963.
The Crossing Places by Elly Griffiths. Forensic archaeologist Dr Ruth Galloway investigates the discovery of a child’s bones near the site of a prehistoric henge on the north Norfolk salt marshes.
The Ice House by Minette Walters. A decade after Phoebe Maybury’s husband inexplicably vanished, a corpse is found and the police become determined to charge her with murder.
The Liar’s Girl by Catherine Ryan Howard. When a body is found in Dublin’s Grand Canal, police turn to the notorious Canal Killer for help. But the imprisoned murderer will only talk to the woman he was dating when he committed his crimes.
This Night’s Foul Work by Fred Vargas (translated by Sian Reynolds). Commissaire Adamsberg investigates whether there is a connection between the escape of a murderous 75-year-old nurse from prison, and the discovery of two men with their throats cut on the outskirts of Paris.
Elly Griffiths:
R in the Month by Nancy Spain. Sadly out of print, this is an atmospheric story set in a down-at-heel hotel in a postwar seaside town. The period detail is perfect and jokes and murders abound. This is the fourth book featuring the fantastic Miriam Birdseye, actress and rather slapdash sleuth.
The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey. A gripping crime novel in which the detective never gets out of bed and the murder happened over 500 years ago. Griffith says: “I read this book as a child and was hooked – on Tey, crime fiction and Richard the Third.”
The Detective’s Daughter by Lesley Thomson. Cleaner Stella Darnell finds herself tidying up her detective father’s final, unfinished case, after he dies. It is the first in a series featuring Stella and her sidekick Jack, an underground train driver who can sense murder.
A Place of Execution by Val McDermid. Griffiths says: “I could have chosen any of Val’s novels, but this book, about a journalist revisiting a shocking 1960s murder, is probably my favourite because of its wonderful sense of time and place. It’s also pitch perfect about journalism, police investigation and life in a small community.”
He Said, She Said by Erin Kelly. An account of a rape trial at which nothing is quite as it seems. Griffiths says: “The story centres around a lunar eclipse, which also works wonderfully as a metaphor and image.”
Dreda Say Mitchell:
Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn. The Gone Girl author’s debut follows journalist Camille’s investigation into the abduction and murder of two girls in her Missouri home town.
Dangerous Lady by Martina Cole. Cole’s first novel sees 17-year-old Maura Ryan taking on the men of London’s gangland.
The Mermaids Singing by Val McDermid. Clinical psychologist Dr Tony Hill is asked to profile a serial killer when four men are found mutilated and tortured.
Indemnity Only by Sara Paretsky. A client tells VI Warshawski he is a prominent banker looking for his son’s missing girlfriend. But VI soon discovers he’s lying, and that the real banker’s son is dead.
The St Cyr series by CS Harris. Mitchell has nominated the whole of this historical mystery series about Sebastian St Cyr, Viscount Devlin – master of disguises, heir to an earldom, and disillusioned army officer. It’s a bit of a cheat but we’ll let her have it.
Erin Kelly:
No Night Is Too Long by Barbara Vine. Tim Cornish thinks he has gotten away with killing his lover in Alaska. But then the letters start to arrive …
Broken Harbour by Tana French. The fourth in French’s sublime Dublin Murder Squad series, this takes place in a ghost estate outside Dublin, where a father and his two children have been found dead, with the mother on her way to intensive care.
Chosen by Lesley Glaister. When Dodie’s mother hangs herself, she has to leave her baby at home and go to bring her brother Jake back from the mysterious Soul Life Centre in New York.
A Savage Hunger by Claire McGowan. Forensic psychologist Paula Maguire investigates the disappearance of a girl, and a holy relic, from a remote religious shrine in the fictional Irish town of Ballyterrin.
The Cry by Helen Fitzgerald. Parents Joanna and Alistair start to turn against each other after their baby goes missing from a remote roadside in Australia.
Sarah Hilary:
The Hours Before Dawn by Celia Fremlin. A sleep-deprived young mother tries to stay sane while her fears grow about the family’s new lodger, in this 1950s lost classic.
Cruel Acts by Jane Casey. Leo Stone, sentenced to life in prison for the murder of two women, is now free and claims he is innocent. DS Maeve Kerrigan and DI Josh Derwen want to put him back in jail, but Maeve begins doubting his guilt – until another woman disappears.
Sex Crimes by Jenefer Shute. A lawyer’s New Year’s Eve pick-up spirals into an erotic obsession which leads to graphic cruelty.
Skin Deep by Liz Nugent. Nugent, whom Ian Rankin has compared to Patricia Highsmith, tells the story of a woman who has been passing herself off as an English socialite on the Riviera for 25 years – until the arrival of someone who knows her from her former life prompts an act of violence.
Cuckoo by Julia Crouch. Rose’s home and family start to fall apart when her best friend Polly comes to stay.
Louise Candlish:
The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie. Christie’s classic – with a legendary twist. The best Hercule Poirot?
The Two Faces of January by Patricia Highsmith. A conman on the run with his wife meets a young American who becomes drawn into the crime they commit.
Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood. The author of The Handmaid’s Tale imagines the life of the real 19th-century Canadian killer Grace Marks.
Little Face by Sophie Hannah. Hannah’s thriller debut is about a young mother who becomes convinced that, after spending two hours away from her baby, the infant is not hers.
Alys, Always by Harriet Lane. Newspaper subeditor Frances is drawn into the lives of the Kyte family when she hears the last words of the victim of a car crash, Alys Kyte.
