I hope you've all had a happy Black History Month! Here's my entry for @creatingblackcharacters' Black History Month Challenge! I thought it was a great opportunity to celebrate the first African cartoon coming to Cartoon Network :} so here's Iyanu!
My message for my Black viewers is this: You are entitled to take up space in art communities. Regardless of skill level, regardless of experience, regardless of how big or small your artistic goals are. Every artist is valuable, and you're no exception! Expressing yourself is a wonderful thing, and there will always be someone who is thrilled to see your work! So keep creating, or don't think twice about getting started! Wherever you go, you'll find your community, because Black artists shine everywhere ✨
While this is a very last minute entry, I wanted to tag my friends @cxffncase and @bodegadulac in case they want to pitch in!
#2025#I don't post my art publicly anymore but this is important#been wrestling my laptop all month so I'm glad I was able to make this happen#Iyanu#thanks a lot to mod Ice for the amazing work in her blog and for hosting this challenge!#I am open to any and all constructive criticisms!#cbc bhm challenge#iyanu child of wonder

Iyanu review
Iyanu is a series inspired (not directly based though) by Yoruba mythology, where the spirits of light and dark fought, leaving behind corrupted beasts that the chosen one must heal.
Conceptually, the series has merit, being a rare series based on African civilizations and mythology. It also portrays court politics accurately and the main chaarcter is likeable without being too "hyper" unlike many recent young female protagonists. The mentor in the first episode was also a mixture of motherly and harsh, which is quite a unique combination.
Where it falters is the pacing and editing, making many scenes look stilted and awkward. The animation is alright but you can see where they cut corners.
Overall a decent recommendation.

YouNeek Studios has secured investment to develop an animation series based on a world of superhero and fantasy stories inspired by African history and mythology.
Iyanu: Child of Wonder, will feature a teenaged, Black female lead whose story and world are inspired by Yoruba history, culture and folklore.

thoughts on iyanu so far:
conceptually, the show is very cool. i don’t think i’ve ever seen an animated show based on yoruba mythology or african mythology in general. it’s nice to see a fantasy show that isn’t set in a vaguely european country for once
while i appreciate that the show doesn’t talk down to its younger audience, there were a few points where it was getting very exposition heavy, especially the first episode. that plus the weird editing left some scenes feeling stilted/oddly paced. hopefully as the show goes on the creators can smooth out the kinks, because i am interested to see where this story is going.
toye’s dad sucks. the chancelor was suspicious the moment he opened his mouth. olori is also suspicious but like in a good way. the reveal that iyanu popped out of the ground as a baby even though she said that she didn’t was a fun little callback.
overall, i like the show so far. i think it has potential. if you like alta, give it a chance!

Iyanu gets new trailer, no release date specified
A new trailer has been released for Iyanu. No release date was specified.
“Iyanu” is a superhero tale set in the magical kingdom of Yorubaland, which draws from Nigerian culture, music and mythology. Drawing deeply from the rich tapestry of Yoruba people, the animated series follows a teenage orphan girl, Iyanu, who spends her days studying history and ancient arts but yearns for a normal life. One day, responding to danger, she unknowingly triggers her divine powers, the likes of which have not been seen since the Age of Wonders. With newly discovered superpowers, Iyanu joins forces with two other teenagers, Biyi and Toye, as they embark on a remarkable journey to discover the truth about the evil lurking in her homeland. Throughout her adventure, she’ll uncover the truth about her past, her parents, and her ultimate destiny to save the world.
