You know what, you're right about Johnny and Dally. 17 and 18 aren't that far apart lol. But I do think it would have a bit of an effect. Maybe Dally being less protective of Johnny or Johnny being more grounded now that he's 18. I kinda imagine his folks kicking him out as soon as he's of age and him staying at the Curtis household for a while before he gets a job and gets a shitty apartment that Dally crashes at more often than not. Being away from his parents probably helps him a lot, even if he still has a lot of self-esteem issues. I'd like to see his and Dally's friendship change from Dally being super protective to them being more like equals. In the more canon version, I imagine the dynamic would stay the same as canon.

Honestly, the Soda dropping out of school or staying in it is up to you but I like the little difference between what might happen if he was 16 or 18 when their parents died. It also means that Pony is legally responsible for one kid rather than two so that might change his stress levels because he wouldn't be as afraid to lose Soda.

I don't know how I feel about project manager Ponyboy, I can't really see it but you do you. I thought being a journalist of some kind suited him because he's really observant and thoughtful, especially about social issues considering he's a 14 yo in canon. I could also see Pony doing a blue-collar job like an electrician or a welder. I don't think he would always stay lanky and tall. I think he would fill out and have a runner build-- lean body, low body fat percentage, and toned legs. I think he'd be pretty strong.

For the main conflict, I could see it being like a Soc kid being murdered just like canon and suddenly Darry is being pressured by his friends and other Socs to help them find the culprit. Suddenly, he's being reminded that he's different. That he would never fit in. That in their eyes, he would always be a greaser.

They would think he's protecting the murderer and suddenly snide remarks were being thrown at him, his friends were distancing themselves, and people were looking at him weirdly. Like he didn't fit in.

Eventually, it gets to a boiling point where he explodes because he's scared and overwhelmed and he says something cruel and horrible to his brother in an argument and Pony looks angry and hurt and Soda begs Darry to take what he said back because he always takes Pony's side and the rest of the gang is giving him the same looks that the socs did. Like he didn't fit in.

And so, Darry leaves.

The conflict would have something to do with Darry feeling stuck in the middle of a class conflict and just being overwhelmed by it because he feels like he has no support. I don't know what the resolution would be but I know this shit would be painful as hell to read.

You could have Paul being one of his closest friends and Darry losing him in the process of the conflict and feeling super betrayed about it— it could be what led to the aforementioned argument between Darry and Pony — and then later on after the whole conflict is over and they both get character development, they can make up and have a friendship that is less conditional and defined by their social class and what people expect of them.

Has anyone done a Curtis brothers role reversal where Ponboy is the eldest and Darry is the youngest? Because I think that would be such an interesting dynamic to explore.

How differently does Ponyboy deal with the stress of being responsible for his siblings following their parent's death? What would his relationship with Soda and Darry look like?

How would a Darry who wasn't burdened with the responsibility of caring for his siblings react to the loss of his parents? What sort of friends would he surround himself with? What relationship would he have with Pony and Soda?

I feel like this has a lot of potential, especially if you play into the fact that Darry had Soc friends when he was in high school so it's highly likely he would also have those friends in this AU. If he and Pony argue like they do in canon, would Darry start to pull away from his brothers and the gang, to act more like Soc? What sort of issues would that cause within the gang?

Modern AU where Darry marries Paul solely for money/benefits.

Darry doesn't hide his motivations either. Like, he literally called Paul over to his house one night and was like "hey, do you want to marry me? I need medical insurance," and they went to the court house the next day.

The funniest part is that Paul doesn't care that its a sham marriage, and is always like "oh, my dear husband that I love so much 💕" and Darry is like "Ponyboy needed a tonsillectomy and the hospital told me it was going to be $7,000 😐"
