Our 2024 Garden: a double harvest, and a day in the garden
I was going to say “a morning in the garden” in the title, but no. It’s almost 4pm, and I just got inside! As I write this, we are at our predicted high of 27C/81F, with the humidex putting us at 29C/84F, and I must say, I’m really feeling that 29C/84F! We’ve had rain and even thunderstorms. It took a while, but the rain barrel by the old kitchen garden finally got refilled. We’re supposed to…

Harvesting Scalloped Squash
Scalloped squash is also known as patty pan squash. If you buy it in seed form you can usually find it in either yellow or white color. No matter which you choose, they are both delicious! It is full of anti-oxidants, vitamin C and beta carotene so it it is great for your health. Here are some I harvested from my garden today: I enjoy my scalloped squash roasted or grilled. Try it and decide…

Lacto-fermented patty pan squash with oregano and thyme.
This flavour combination turned out really well! Summer squash and oregano is a good combo. Adding one bird chili in the ferment was a good amount, adding a subtle amount of heat. The garlic (clove and scape) is also subtle.
The texture is really pleasant, too: lightly crunchy.
After about 10 days or so, this ferment developed kahm yeast, so I poured off the surface growth and put the jar in the fridge. This was my first time fermenting summer squash, so I'm not sure whether this veggie is just prone to yeast, or this batch was unlucky, or what.

Our 2024 Garden: first G Star, plus a kitten update
This morning didn’t need as much time out in the garden. I didn’t do any watering, as the forecast was for rain, possible thunderstorms, this afternoon, with rain continuing through to tomorrow. I should have checked again before I headed out, though. Now we have an only 30% chance of rain in the late afternoon. We might still get rain overnight. Ah, well. The high for today is expected to be…
