Out of the gutter and into your arms, the FREE monthly Lobotomy Room cinema club (devoted to Bad Movies for Bad People) returns on Thursday 16 May 2024! And boy, do we have a shocker for you this time – 1965 hagsploitation thriller Die! Die! My Darling!
Chic, cosmopolitan and modern, American Patricia Carroll (Stefanie Powers) is living her best life. Upon arriving in London to marry her suave Brit fiancé Alan (Maurice Kaufmann), Carroll seeks closure by visiting Mrs. Trefoile, the grieving mother of her former boyfriend Stephen who died under tragic circumstances years earlier. Big mistake! Mrs. Trefoile turns out to be a terrifying religious fundamentalist and vengeful psychopath who most definitely does not have Patricia’s best interests at heart. To be fair, Patricia should have suspected Mrs. Trefoile was evil. She resides in a Gothic lair populated by freaky menacing servants (including a young Donald Sutherland and Yootha Joyce!). When we’re first introduced to her, Mrs. Trefoile is sitting in the kind of wicker peacock chair favoured by Morticia Addams. And when dinner is served, it’s vegetarian! (“We do not use condiments of any kind in this house, Patricia! God's food should be eaten unadorned!” she adds). Adding to the fun considerably, the bible-bashing Mrs. Trefoil is portrayed by the fabulous cast-against-type debauched hellraising wild woman of the American stage and campy gay icon, Miss Tallulah Bankhead, in her final film role. (She died in 1968).
In truth, Die! Die! My Darling! is arguably rarely “scary”, but with its sadistic emphasis on Patricia’s torment, it packs a nasty jolt. As the AllMovie website concludes, “Die! Die!'s thrills may be cheap, but they're thrills nonetheless.” And if you’re a fan of hagsploitation horror like What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, Strait-jacket and Hush … Hush, Sweet Charlotte, this one is a must! So, join us to watch Die! Die! My Darling! over cocktails at Fontaine’s bar in Dalston on 16 May! Details.

South Africa to launch Astro-Tourism strategy
On World Tourism Day, which was held on 27 September, the Minister of Science and other fields and the Minister of Tourism announced their initiative to promote tourism in South Africa. Unsplash/Marcus Löfvenberg Prof Blade Nzimande and Patricia de Lille have stated their commitment to a strategy of Astro-Tourism. This will highlight the Northern Cape as a must-see destination for attractions focused on astronomy and science. With the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) in Sutherland and the Square Kilometer Array (SKA radio telescope), this province is well on its way to becoming a hotspot for stargazing lovers. The initiative is also set to promote agri-tourism in the Karoo with its unpolluted skies that are perfect for stargazing and through its scientific infrastructure and achievements. -The Last Dragon Chronicles by Chris d'Lacy. This is a series of seven that is deeply emotional and builds up into a very expansive universe. It initially stars the young tenant of a woman who makes clay dragons that are not what they seem and expands to encompass the POV of the majority of the cast. Dragons, some violence, no swearing, and features themes of found family, trauma, recovery, and finding your place in a larger world. 10/10 recommend. (A sidenote on this is that there are two different English versions of it. The original novelization is British and takes place in Britain. The American version transfers the story to America (not far from Boston) and America later gains non-existent landmarks that are actually real places in Britain due to the publisher changing it. Doesn't effect the story, but some people are bothered)
-Howl's Moving Castle, Castle in the Air, and House of Many Ways by Diane Wynn Jones. A set of interconnected (but can stand alone) books in a fantasy world that is attached to our own. Published in the 80s, it's older, but very good. Very good plots and stories, little violence, and very gentle swearing (think 'blast it!' 'confound it!' and that sort of thing). A very fun set of books, basically.
-The Chronicles of the Enchanted Forest by Patricia C. Wrede. A fantasy series, similar to Howl in that it's older and a gentle, rather than dark and gloomy, but filled with many clever characters and plots. It features dragons, royalty, witches, wizards, sorcerers, cats, and quite a few made up creatures all co-existing around the confusing and magical Enchanted Forest. Some violence (but not graphic) and no 'real' swearing. (There is a cat named Fiddlesticks and I think that's the harshest the swearing gets, if I recall).
--Wings of Fire by Tui T. Sutherland. Fantasy setting starring a group of young dragons setting out to fulfill a prophecy earlier than they're meant to in order to stop a war between the seven dragon tribes. This series is very heavy on found family themes. It also includes trauma and violence, but no swearing. (There are three arcs of five books and two companion novels, among a series of novellas and graphic novels. Each book is set from a different POV) (I started these as an adult and I thoroughly enjoyed them).
Trusted mutuals and friends, I put a question to you: my youngest brother (thirteen years old) is desperately looking for some books to read—do y’all have any recs? A few criteria: a few of his favorite series recently have been Keeper of the Lost Cities, The Unwanteds, and The Green Ember. He’s also pretty sensitive to swearing, but not so much to violence.
