A Spectacular, Rare Alignment of 6 Planets Is About to Happen in The Sky
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/8c4105c6150d15f3634b01a47576bd76/ab8d436849990987-03/s540x810/c5bb0227df1721349d1c4e52185b071dfbee7bfa.jpg)
An illustration of the June 3 planetary alignment. (Star Walk)
By Michelle Starr
24 May 2024
Six of the planets of the Solar System are about to line up for a rare sight in Earth's sky.
In the wee small hours of 3 and 4 June 2024, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus will appear in a straight line in an alignment known as a planet parade.
Only Venus will be absent – even Earth's waning crescent moon is going to put in an appearance.
It's not uncommon for several planets to be in the sky at once, but it's less common for more planets to align.
Any number of planets from three to eight constitutes an alignment. Five or six planets assembling is known as a large alignment, but five-planet alignments are significantly more frequent than six.
These alignments do not represent the planets lining up in space like you see in diagrams and illustrations of the Solar System. That's not a thing that actually happens in the real Universe, sadly.
A planetary alignment occurs because the planets of the Solar System all orbit the Sun more or less on a flat plane called the ecliptic.
Some are a little above or below this plane, but it's roughly the same.
This is because of the way stars form, including the Sun.
A baby star in a cloud of material starts spinning; the cloud around them swirls into a disk that feeds into the baby star.
A planet forms from what remains of the disk and, if left to its own devices, will stay in that level position.
This means that, occasionally, the planets will be on the same side of the Sun as they move along their orbits, so we get to see them in the sky at the same time.
They appear to be in a straight line because they're all on the ecliptic.
This is what will be happening in early June, around an hour before sunrise. You might need some visual aids.
While Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn will be bright enough to see with the naked eye, Uranus and Neptune are too far and faint.
If you want to catch a glimpse, you'll need binoculars or a telescope.

Isn't this exciting?? Prepare ur binoculars people!

Finally caught a night that was mostly cloudless and not too cold for stargazing, and there are so many planets visible right now! Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are all shining super bright, and apparently we could have seen Neptune and Uranus if we’d used binoculars, as well.
My kid actually spotted Orion’s Belt all by himself, too, which was neat - he’s still not great about following a pointing finger, so it’s always kind of mind blowing to watch him pick out things in the sky like that.
We were a tiny bit too early to spot Sirius and Regulus, though. :(

The planetary alignment today reminds us that sometimes, without force or friction, things simply line up in the most perfect way at the most perfect time. Like old friends reuniting or pieces of a puzzle finding their place, these celestial bodies demonstrate that there's a natural rhythm to the universe - patient, purposeful, and precisely as it should be. Perhaps the stars above are showing us what we sometimes forget down here on Earth: that our most magical moments often come not from pushing or planning but from allowing life's natural choreography to unfold.

THE GREAT CONJUNCTION!!!!!
Coming June 3rd/4th: the Parade of Planets
...It could be considered a Pride Parade, surely? Look, there's even kind of a rainbow! :)
On June 3, Jupiter and Uranus have joined the current crowd, with all six planets forming a straight line through the pre-dawn sky that stretches from Jupiter on the eastern end (closest to the horizon) up through Mercury, Uranus, Mars, and Neptune, to Saturn on the western end, highest in the sky before sunrise. Some 20 minutes before sunrise, all six planets should be visible, though note that Uranus (magnitude 5.9) and Neptune (magnitude 7.8) will be too faint for naked-eye observing and, although they’re present in the lineup, will need binoculars or a telescope to spot. But Jupiter (magnitude –2), Mercury (magnitude –1), Mars (magnitude 1), and Saturn (magnitude 1) will all stand out clearly to the naked eye in a line spanning some 73° on the sky. What’s more, a delicate waning crescent Moon is crashing the party as well, standing just to the lower left of Mars. Note, however, that our Moon is not perfectly in line — that’s because Luna’s orbit is tilted some 5° with respect to the ecliptic.
Anyway, this will be worth seeing. (And there's kind of a do-over on June 30th.) More details here:

Something cool is happening in our night sky currently! We are experiencing a Planetary Parade in which several (if not all) of our solar systems planets are aligning perfectly across the night sky.
Regulus (in the Leo constellation) can be spotted out in the southern sky along with all the other celestial beings!! (Hey baby)
Arcturus is currently visible as well, you’ll find the star in the eastern sky. Draco in the northern sky, and Uranus, Jupiter, and Mars were all in the western sky last night…
Sometimes insomnia sucks. Other times, you find yourself bundled up at 1:30am in the morning, tolerating the 20F temperatures, just staring out into the stars.
Marauders/HP fans and Astrological fans alike, be sure to look up tonight if you find yourself feeling a wee bit melancholy or nostalgic. Might help put things into perspective.
