Gio’s Bakery & Cafe, 711 Foothill Blvd, La Cañada Flintridge, CA 91011

Gio’s recently opened a second location in La Canada. We visited on a Sunday afternoon and it was already busy. Gio’s is a French-inspired café. The menu includes breakfast, paninis ($15.35 & up), cold sandwiches, crepes, salads, bowls, full espresso bar, and drinks. They also have pastries (cakes, tarts, croissants, muffins, eclairs, cream puffs, beignets), and baguettes. Breakfast is served all day on Sundays. Sandwiches aren’t cheap, but they come with a mixed green salad.

The baguettes and croissants are imported from France…but they must be imported frozen and par-baked because they aren’t as good as what you’d expect.

Baguette ($3.95): on the softer side, not any better than what you’d get a Trader Joe’s

Ham & cheese panini ($15.35): French ham, butter, Swiss cheese on a roll with a mixed green salad. The roll was different than their baguette but it looked like a smaller, par-baked baguette. It was soft and crunchy where it had been pressed. The filling was fine – layers of soft French ham, Swiss cheese, and butter. Very simple. I’ve had better but it wasn’t bad. The mixed green salad was a handful of greens and dressing – nothing else. The dressing was French dressing, I think – quite sweet and thick.  They could have made a little effort to make it nicer.

The ambiance is nice enough; it has a old-fashioned European café feel. You can sit inside or outside on the strip mall sidewalk. I probably won’t be back. Gio’s is decent but you can get much better baguettes and baguette sandwiches in LA (though not in La Canada).

Casa Asia, Ungasan - the best panini I've ever had, of course in Bali. The land of ethnic food at low prices. I think it was only $4 bucks for this plate of food. The word "panini" is plural for "panino" which literally means "small bread" in Italian.
