Spoilers Ahead
OK let's talk about the lore implications of The Magnus Protocol episode 4's statement.
Timeframe
The Mannheim School was founded in 1741-1742; and the Royal Court of the Palatinate left Mannheim in 1778. This gives us a roughly 35-year timeframe within which which our violinist could have made his initial carriage journey to Germany - barring timeline differences.
This absolutely destroys my theory that the Fears arrived here from the TMA universe, found a universe without Fear, and broke through in East Germany during the Cold War. This episode firmly establishes that there were Fears in the Protocolverse in the late 18th century, and that they were well-established at the time - established enough to have a guy giving out cursed artifacts in the woods of Baden.
Were they the Archiverse Fears, that just happened to arrive earlier than I thought? Were they Protocolverse Fears? Were they Fears from yet another universe, escaped from their own Fearpocalypse?
The Fears
So this is a really fascinating statement because it seems to marry our old friend TMA Slaughter Classic, with whatever the fuck Ink5oul was doing in TMAGP episode 2, with just a mention of the Archivist-associated power to elicit an unintended confession.
The Slaughter connection I'm sure I won't have to argue - it's straight out of TMA. In fact, it's so straight-out-of-TMA that to me it suggests that this is almost certainly the Archiverse's The Slaughter. If we were dealing with an artifact of a different universe's Fear of violence, I wouldn't expect it to be so connected to music. There's nothing about music that inherently connects it to horrific violence, and yet Bardwell jumps out of a carriage and dashes his skull on the rocks because of what seems an awful lot like the Piper's Song. Violin Audrey Two goes full Grifter's Bone when it's unable to get blood.
The interesting part though is that these incidents are the exception to the rule of the violin's favor. At first it seems happy to make small, flesh wound mutilations of its player, which doesn't sound like the Slaughter at all. Yes, he moves on to serial killing, but it's a very methodical, planned kind of violence - not at all what I'd expect from the Archiverse Slaughter. And the theme of an artist mutilating themselves in service of their art seems very similar to Daria in Protocol episode 2.
Of course, the art connection might just be a coincidence. There is a disproportionate amount of art about art and artists, just because it's high on the list of things artists tend to think about. It's the same reason there's not a whole lot of art about septic tank maintenance*.
I doubt it, though.
Here's my working theory: I think there are at least two universes' Fears at work here, and there wasn't enough room in the Fear-Space for two full sets of entities to represent and feed on essentially the same fears. So they got smooshed together.
The Archiverse Slaughter got smooshed with a close equivalent - a fear that included Archiverse-style violence, yes, but also included a significant element of self-harm, and was culturally wrapped up with artistic performance in the same way that the Archiverse Slaughter was wrapped up with the sound, but not always the performance, of music. The Smooshed Slaughter teeters between its aspects, showing one face or the other depending upon the situation.
OK but what was with the Archivist powers?
idk tbh. I can think of two theories, neither of which I find particularly compelling:
The guy in the woods wasn't actually an avatar. Instead, he was a Salesa type, a distributor of supernatural trinkets. He had some kind of artifact of the Eye on him that gave him archivist compulsion powers.
All of the Archiverse Entities were changed by their time under the rule of the Eye, so being strongly-enough touched by an Archiverse Fear gives you mild Eye Powers for free.
Augustus
Yes I know everyone thinks this is Jonah, and I admit there is a good chance it is Jonah. But I don't like it, and I hold out hope that it isn't.
Personally, I like the idea that the Fears were specifically attached to the voices that told the stories in TMA, in which case Jonah wouldn't have been dragged along; but, if it was based purely on the physical presence of the people in the top room of the Panopticon, then yes, Jonah could have been brought along. To our knowledge nobody ever went after Jonah's body down in the labyrinth, so his eyes would presumably have been left alive in Elias's head for like, the whole episode.
I still hold out hope that Augustus is an Archivist-equivalent from another universe that also went Fearpocalypse and also released its Fears to the multiverse. While I'm pretty certain we're dealing with two sets of Fears here, possibly combined into one set of Smooshed Fears, I'm not at all certain that the non-Archiverse Fears are originally from the Protocolverse.
Conclusion
It's 3 AM and I have to go to bed. I think I've properly scheduled this to post an hour after the episode drops; if I'm wrong about the episode timing and accidentally spoil someone, I'm very sorry.
---
* yes I know there's septic tank dive fetish photos, I said "not a whole lot" not "none whatsoever."

Would you know anything about the bedbugs infestation in Paris ? Is it as bad as the media says it is ?
Thank you 😊
Dear (returning?) Paris Anon,
At least I suppose it's you. 'Bedbug Anon' was a bit cheeky, to be honest.
Well, yes. I do know a thing or two about it. I even just re-watched a very popular and well-informed French talk show (C dans l'air) which spoke at length about it on October 2 (suit yourself, if you understand French: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKUizY5ek5A) - this explains my belated answer. It was, as usually, a most entertaining and insightful inquiry on what is now not only the latest wave of collective hysteria, but also a very serious political French affair (everything is political, in France).
For a more entertaining, yet alarming Anglo-Saxon POV, check The Cut's cheeky correspondence from Paris Fashion Week (https://www.thecut.com/2023/10/snug-as-a-bedbug-in-a-high-fashion-rug.html). I couldn't help but wonder if C dutifully left her suitcase outside or put her white Panda shirt in the freezer, just to be on the safe side, like all the American fashionistas recommended (see article above).
With French topics, I have a infallible rule of thumb: if it made it to the media, then it's bad enough and you should multiply the effect at least by 2, just to have an idea. It is a dire straits moment for France, when they are expecting to be submerged by hundreds of thousands of tourists, lured in by the Olympics: national pride is at stake. So this is why they invited an entomologist and two medical school professors at that talk-show: to explain the traumatized masses even Cleopatra had bed bugs (I kid you not and only in France) and that it has nothing to do with the lack of hygiene. Mysteriously, no other rationale was brought forth, but I would guess it has to do with the inflation of wallpaper that plagues all the bourgeois French apartments (those spaces perfectly fit to entertain people, but inept for comfortable living). Bed bugs just love wallpaper and upholstery, for some mystifying reason.
Since you asked at your own risk, I am afraid you have to put up with my logorrhea and allow me to shortly explain you something about French attitude to hygiene. Some people (Americans, especially) are horrified by what sometimes is a nonchalant approach to it, but I don't really mind and I don't find French people repugnant at all (God forbid!). But it is true that instead of 'cleanliness is next to godliness', French kids heard for centuries things like ' l'eau pique' (water stings). Jamie and Claire's Paris was not its lionized book and series avatar: it was a pigsty, where people routinely threw their chamber pots either in the Seine river or just haphazardly in the open street sewage running under their windows. So much so, that this is why the Sun King chose to flee from (bed bug) infested Louvre Palace and chose to repair and expand his father's old hunting lodge at Versailles, with the result we all know.
Not that Versailles was any better, hygiene-wise: Gabaldon's descriptions are correct, but they do not measure up with the brutal and hilarious honesty of the Princess Palatine. A rotund, plain but witty woman, Liselotte von der Pfalz (the sister-in law of the Sun King, no less) wrote (in French) absolutely wonderful letters to her German relatives. And I do remember howling when I happened to stumble upon things like : 'oh, in Versailles, just about everyone shits just about everywhere, without a single care in the world' (I am quoting from memory, but the idea is very accurate).
Along came two (contemporary) men. Louis Pasteur whose germ (Jamie's wee beasties) theory of diseases radically changed the public health game in France, aside from discovering the cure for rage. And the Baron Haussmann, who razed all the (bed bug) infested Medieval Paris neighborhoods, plus re-introduced underground sewage (tout à l'égoût) to France. And built many of the supremely elegant avenues and boulevards that are the real pride, joy and soul of that strange, annoying and beautiful city I deeply love and know like the back of my hand.
So you see, Anon, the pain, the shame and the struggle are real.
I hope I didn't make you dizzy. Don't forget to tell us if you liked Paris and don't be a stranger.

Week 9: Easter Edition
Welcome back to my blog everyone! This week we had our IFSA version of “spring break”, which just so happened to be an extra Thursday off of school. It happens to overlap with Easter Monday so we have a solid 5 day weekend to explore!
Bypassing Branches: Escaping Easter in Prague
I spent Thursday wandering through Prague’s many Easter markets. There’s one in nearly every main square, or náměstí, with countless stalls selling snacks, jewelry, handmade crafts, and more! For all the ladies, however, I highly recommend getting out of Prague for the actual Easter day. They’ve got this crazy tradition where guys go around with handmade willow sticks decorated with ribbons and playfully swat the girls. It's called Pomlázka, and it's said to bring beauty and youth. In return, girls are supposed to hand out homemade eggs or a shot of local spirit. I’m really not sure how great it would feel to get hit by a branch, especially as the guys get progressively drunker and more aggressive throughout the day, but I’ll respect the tradition… from a distance.
Easter Affairs, with an Italian Flair
Thursday night I flew out to Italy for a solo trip. I landed pretty late, so I stayed in a cute hotel right next to the airport. In the morning, the nicest mother took care of me, making me breakfast + sandwiches to go and coordinating transportation to the bus stop so I could get to the city center.
My travels throughout Italy ended up aligning perfectly with their most famous Easter traditions! Every Good Friday in Rome, the Pope leads a torchlight procession between the Colosseum and Palatine Hill. I actually could not describe my excitement to see the Pope in real life, but he ended up calling in sick at the last minute, and didn’t show up. I still got to watch the procession in a huge crowd though.
I spent Saturday and Sunday in Florence with my best friend from high school, Camille, and her family. The tradition in Florence on Easter Sunday is literally an exploding cart – the Scoppio del Carro. Camille’s family attended Church in the Duomo that morning, not expecting the ceremony to start with lighting of a (fake) bird on fire, sending it flying out a window, and then igniting a massive cart packed with fireworks. lol imagine their surprise. I missed filming the actual explosion but I captured a picture of the actual cart below.
On Easter Monday I traveled to Milan, just in time for their annual Fiera dell’Angelo: an extensive Spring market with flowers and plants. I also found a stand selling popular street food, including Sicilian cannolis! My grandparents are from Sicily, and owned an Italian restaurant in Milwaukee when I was younger. I grew up making cannolis with my cousins for weddings and other special occasions, so I was super excited to have a taste of home here in Italy.
So there you go, Easter with a side of culture shock, and I’ve gotta say, I’m here for it. Thanks for reading, Happy Easter!!! 😄🐣🌷
Čau (or more fittingly, Ciao!),

Investing in Palatine, IL Real Estate: Is Now the Right Time?
Palatine, a northwest suburb of Chicago located in Cook County, Illinois, has long been an attractive area for families and professionals looking for affordability, good schools, and proximity to Chicago. With a population of just under 70,000, Palatine offers a small-town feel while still providing easy access to big city amenities. For real estate investors, Palatine presents an interesting opportunity. Here we'll examine the current real estate market in Palatine and consider whether now is a good time to invest. So, get ready for contact with certified relocation professional.
Housing Market Overview
The housing market in Palatine remains strong, though it has cooled slightly from its peak in 2021-2022. Home prices continue to rise, but at a slower pace than earlier in pandemic-fueled seller's market. The median home price in Palatine as of July 2022 was $385,000, up 11.6% from the previous year according to Redfin. While bidding wars are less common, homes are still selling quickly at just 12 days on market. Inventory remains tight, with only 1.5 months of supply available. This persistent shortage of homes for sale will likely keep upward pressure on prices.
Rents have also been rising steadily, making Palatine an attractive area for investors. As of July 2022, average rent for a 1-bedroom apartment was $1,395, up 15% year-over-year, according to Apartment List. Occupancy rates have rebounded to pre-pandemic levels above 95%. With rents rising faster than home prices, Palatine remains affordable relative to other Chicagoland areas, offering investors opportunity for cash flow.
Drivers of Demand
Several factors suggest demand will remain strong in Palatine real estate:
Job growth - Palatine benefits from proximity to major employers like Zurich North America, Weber-Stephen Products, and GE Healthcare. Unemployment stands at just 3.1% as of June 2022. New developments like the $300 million Sterling Bay warehouse project on the former Motorola campus will bring more jobs.
Population growth - Palatine's population grew 4.2% from 2010 to 2020, nearly twice the Cook County rate of 2.3%. New residential developments will accommodate demand.
Highly-rated schools - Palatine School District 15 is consistently ranked top in the state. For families, this is a major draw.
Transportation access - Easy access to I-90, Route 53, and two Metra stations make Palatine a convenient suburb. A new proposal to extend Route 53 north could enhance accessibility further.
Potential Headwinds
Despite the positives, some factors could dampen real estate outlook:
Rising mortgage rates - Rates above 5% reduce buyer affordability and dampen demand. Sales may moderate.
High property taxes - Typical property tax rate is over 2% in Palatine, among the highest in the metro area. This could deter some buyers, especially if home prices moderate.
New construction - 2,000+ new residential units planned could boost inventory, moderating price growth. However, construction costs may delay projects.
Overall Assessment
Fundamentals remain generally favorable for residential real estate investing in Palatine. Though the market has cooled slightly from its peak, tight inventory, strong demand drivers, and increasing rents continue to make Palatine attractive. Investors should monitor mortgage rates and new construction closely, but opportunities currently outweigh risks. Taking a long-term view, Palatine offers stable population growth, a vibrant local economy, and accessibility that set the stage for continued real estate demand. For buy-and-hold investors or those considering new development, Palatine offers promising upside potential.
