The laneways, alleyways and the arcades of downtown Melbourne are both fun and rewarding to get to know. This past month I’ve seen all of them multiple times spending time looking at their historical and architecturally interesting buildings and taking great pleasure in their street art.  Imagine, many of the lanes have been named by the city as registered artworks. Hidden away from the main grid of the CBD, it’s also fun to visit and frequent their many cafes and small restaurants. As I’ve familiarised myself with them I’ve been deciding along the way which is my favourite of the arcades and lanes. The Block Arcade and AC/DC lane always come up as #1.  Here are some photos of AC/DC including a street painting that depicts Malcolm Young of AC/DC, founder of the hard rock band, AC/DC who died on November 18th, during the month I was in Melbourne.

During the second week, Day #13, I had a guided tour with Annette of the Block Arcade, the most memorable of the many arcades that houses multiple stores and fabulous stained glass and architectural details. And look at Gog and Magog in the nearby Royal Arcade who have manned the gongs of the clocks there since 1892.

Together, bee and human communications suggest brain power or intelligence. There could be a mutual brain system between humans and honeybees. the twinkling lights on the high rises at night leave me speechless. the grease in the gutters leeches poison into the sea and this smells like home to me.

i love this city like a cacophony. like the cough cough in me when i breathe in the city incense that insenses those who grew up on roses.

Canberra!  I was amazed by the vast spaces and the radial design of the Australia’s capital that was designed by Walter Burley Griffin, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright. Like Washington, D.C., the distances between monuments are huge and everywhere in the city I felt the imprint of Griffin’s desire to have a vast landscape setting for the capital buildings.  Sadly, though Griffin worked here for many years and his design for the city was finally accepted and executed he ultimately resigned because of problems with the Canberra bureaucracy who had given him false data.These people  were condemned by the courts but because of these difficulties Griffin left Canberra and was never able to construct any buildings in the city. But I was aware, as I think everyone is who goes there, of the imposing design he has imprinted on this special place.

Before going to my hotel I went to the National Museum of Australia to see the spectacular show called Song Lines that documents through Aboriginal paintings, sculptures and installations the magical and deeply spiritual art of its people.  Originally Song Lines were maps of their land that registered the people’s hunting and food gathering history in a particular place, allowing them to “read” their country. Essentially Song Lines were survival lines. They made drawings in the earth and also did body painting, both of which were destroyed or washed off to keep these indications secret and sacred. When the animals and the land needed to regenerate the people moved on exhibiting their deep feeling and identification with nature and their wish to maintain ecological balance.  Their desire to make actual paintings, now acrylic on canvas or on paper, about these maps and the myths of their culture came later, initiated by an art teacher about fifty years ago.  The circles, spirals, and patterns they now use often cover up the secrets of these places and stories. This art documents their culture and remains a deeply spiritual expression rather than just a beautiful painting to put above a couch though decidedly many are visually wonderful to look at.

David Hansen, an art historian, and Heather Swann, a fellow artist, took me on a tour of the National Rock Gallery still in formation which was a special treat.  Someday I’ll hope to return. Then David gave me a tour of the National Gallery talking to me about various paintings in their collection. This painting above by John Glover from 1834 portrays the Indigenous people in the foreground, the original residents of Australia, who are moving away and the new cities now in the background that are being built by the English settlers. A wonderful tour, I felt very lucky to be able to discuss with them the multiple aspects of this great collection.

I could never have predicted how varied and rich my month there turned out to be.  Not that the experience wasn’t at times difficult and demanding but on balance and reflection I think it will have altered my life in ways I can’t understand right now.
