Sleepy Hollow (Season 1 Review) | An Excellent Mix of Genres and Actors

Greg Owen at LGBTQ Nation:
The Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) has ordered local school districts to submit their sex education plans to the state for approval. The FLDOE has also said the classes must promote abstinence and cannot include discussion of contraception or pictures of reproductive health organs. The sex-ed takeover removes local discretion when it comes to district sex education classes and materials.
For some time, Florida law has mandated that sex-ed lessons emphasize the “benefits of sexual abstinence as the expected standard and the consequences of teenage pregnancy” for grades 6 through 12. But now the state has removed any local control of additional information school districts can provide their students. A memo written by Broward County administrators obtained by The Orlando Sentinel summarized the district’s verbal interactions with state officials regarding their takeover of sex ed in the state. The state provided no written instructions provided for districts.
“Pictures of external sexual/reproductive anatomy should not be included in any grade level,” the memo recorded state officials as saying. “Contraceptives are not part of any health or science standard” but could be mentioned as a “health resource,” though “pictures, activities, or demonstrations that illustrate their use should not be included in instruction in any grade level,” it said. “Different types of sex (i.e., anal, oral, and vaginal) cannot be part of instruction in any grade level,” state officials added, according to the Broward memo. Orange County schools previously started their lessons in 5th grade with one class devoted to the physical changes of puberty. High schoolers had discussions about contraception and sexually transmitted diseases. Now the state must approve any additional curriculum and they’ll either deny the additions or ignore them, forcing local districts to cancel sex-ed classes altogether until the state addresses their plans.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) wages war on accurate sex education in schools, as any sex ed class in Sunshine State schools must mention abstinence and cannot include discussion of contraception or pictures of reproductive health organs.

"I have my happiness, which I guard like a wolf, and I have authority now and a certain amount of daring, which, if you remember correctly, I never had before." (Two Serious Ladies – Jane Bowles, 1943)
the first half of the 1940s was, of course, dominated by world war two. just as with world war one, more women were involved in the war effort, and those who weren't often took the jobs dominated by men. icons such as rosie the riveter propagated a sort of idealized "tough girl" image, with her denim coveralls and clenched fists – yet red lips, defined lashes, and thin brows. she was just masculine enough to fit the mold of serving one's country, and still feminine enough for the general public to accept. once again, fabric rationing led to certain garments and styles being reused and revamped. some designers, like claire mccardell, worked within the confines of wool and silk rationing to create clothing made of denim and jersey knits. "ready-to-wear" clothing was becoming more popular, especially in the united states, allowing fashion trends to spread faster and further than before. at the end of the decade, christian dior debuted his "new look", which would set the stage for the iconic mid-century silhouette: cinched waists (thanks a lot, dior...), full skirts, and round shoulders. this "new look" emphasized the stereotypical ideal of femininity and ruled post-war fashion.
okay, maybe the tangent about claire mccardell wasn't that important, but i did just see a museum exhibit about her, so i wanted to include it.
(ps. i know 1942 isnt entirely accurate but it was a fit of inspiration, and it takes like 20 minutes to get my game open so i was not willing to exit when i already had two looks done)

Ebenezer Scrooge and Shakespeare
Here's another one of my autism-brain lists of connections.
In honor of the season, I found myself wondering "How many actors who have played Scrooge in adaptations of A Christmas Carol have also acted in Shakespeare?"
It turns out that quite a few have done just that! Not only the British actors, but some of the American and Australian ones too.
Seymour Hicks (1913 and 1935 films)
His stage performances included the title role in Richard III.
Russell Thorndike (1923 silent film)
Here we have one of the true Shakespearean actors on the list. His stage roles included the title role in King Lear, both Hamlet and the Ghost in Hamlet, Shylock in The Merchant of Venice, Egeon in The Comedy of Errors, Roderigo in Othello, Sir Toby Belch in Twelfth Night, Verges in Much Ado About Nothing, Trinculo in The Tempest, Launce in Two Gentlemen of Verona, Banquo in Macbeth, and Bishop Gardiner in Henry VIII, as well as roles in Julius Caesar, The Winter's Tale, Romeo and Juliet, As You Like It, Cymbeline, and Richard II, though it hasn't been recorded who he played. He also directed productions of Julius Caesar, Henry IV Parts 1 and 2, Coriolanus, The Merchant of Venice, Othello, The Tempest, Hamlet, The Taming of the Shrew. And onscreen, he played the Priest in the 1948 Laurence Olivier film of Hamlet and the First Priest in Olivier's 1955 Richard III.
Reginald Owen (1938 film)
Onscreen he played Thomas Cromwell in a silent adaptation of Henry VIII, and he evidently played Shakespeare roles onstage too, though I don't know which ones.
Alastair Sim (1951 film and 1971 animated short)
Onstage he played the Messenger and later the Duke of Venice in Othello, Trebonius and Lucillus in Julius Caesar, Antonio in Twelfth Night, Claudius in Hamlet, the title role in Cymbeline, Duke Senior in As You Like It, Banquo in Macbeth (and one performance as Macbeth himself, substituting for an injured Malcolm Keen), Polixenes in The Winter's Tale, the Apothecary in Romeo and Juliet, Antonio and later Prospero in The Tempest, and Shylock in The Merchant of Venice.
Basil Rathbone (The Stingiest Man in Town, 1956, and Tales from Dickens, 1959)
Here we have another true Shakespearean actor. Between major roles and minor roles, and between stage and screen, he claimed to have played "fifty-two roles in twenty-three plays of Shakespeare." The following is a nearly-complete list: Paris, Tybalt, and Romeo in Romeo and Juliet; Trebonius and Cassius in Julius Caesar; Iago in Othello; Lewis in King John; Aumerle in Richard II; Poins, Westmorland, and Prince Hal in Henry IV, Part II; the Dauphin in Henry V; Hastings in Richard III ; Lysander and Oberon in A Midsummer Night's Dream; a Watchman and Conrade in Much Ado About Nothing; Antipholus of Ephesus in The Comedy of Errors; the Major Domo, Hortensio, and Lucentio in The Taming of the Shrew; William Page, Pistol, and Fenton in The Merry Wives of Windsor; Florizel in The Winter's Tale; Ferdinand in The Tempest; Silvius and Orlando in As You Like It; Antonio and Orsino in Twelfth Night; Tullus Aufidius in Coriolanus; Lennox and Malcolm in Macbeth; Bernardo, Rosencrantz, Guildenstern, and Laertes in Hamlet; Solanio, Lorenzo, and Bassanio in The Merchant of Venice; Cornwall and Albany in King Lear.
Ron Haddrick (1969 and 1982 Australian animated films)
He played many Shakesperean roles on both stage and screen, including, but not limited to, Petruchio and later Baptista in The Taming of the Shrew and Alonso in The Tempest.
Albert Finney (the musical Scrooge, 1970)
Onstage he played the title roles in Hamlet, Coriolanus, and Henry V, and Don Pedro in Much Ado About Nothing.
Michael Hordern (1977 TV film)
Another true Shakespearean. His roles on both stage and screen included Lodovico in Othello, Macduff and later Macbeth in Macbeth, Menenius in Coriolanus, Jaques in As You Like It, Polonius in Hamlet, Parolles in All's Well That Ends Well, Malvolio in Twelfth Night, Prospero in The Tempest, Cassius in Julius Caesar, Ulysses in Troilus and Cressida, John of Gaunt in Richard II, Don Armado in Love's Labour's Lost, Baptista in The Taming of the Shrew, Lord Capulet in Romeo and Juliet, and the title role in King Lear.
George C. Scott (1984 TV film)
Onstage he played the title role in Richard III and Shylock in The Merchant of Venice, and he was also in As You Like It once, though I can't seem to learn which role he played.
Michael Caine (The Muppet Christmas Carol, 1992)
Just one Shakespeare role: Horatio in Hamlet at Elsinore with Christopher Plummer, 1964.
Tim Curry (1997 animated film)
He played Shakespeare himself in the 1978 miniseries Will Shakespeare.
Patrick Stewart (1999 TV film)
Another true Shakespearean actor, both onstage and onscreen. His performances include the title roles in Macbeth and Othello (the latter in a race-swapped production that had an otherwise all-black cast), Prospero in The Tempest, Shylock in The Merchant of Venice, Enobarbus and later Mark Antony in Antony and Cleopatra, the Player King and later both Claudius and the Ghost in Hamlet, the Dauphin in Henry V, Cornwall in King Lear, Launce and later Sir Eglamour in Two Gentlemen of Verona, Tom Snout and later Oberon in A Midsummer Night's Dream, John of Gaunt in Richard II, and Malvolio in Twelfth Night.
Simon Callow (2001 animated film)
Onstage and on the radio, he's played the title roles in Titus Andronicus and Richard III, Falstaff in both The Merry Wives of Windsor and Orson Welles' Chimes at Midnight, Prospero in The Tempest, Orlando in As You Like It, and Malvolio in Twelfth Night. He's also starred in a one-man play called Being Shakespeare, and done dramatic readings of the Sonnets.
Kelsey Grammer (2004 TV musical)
Onstage he's played the title role in Macbeth and Cassio in Othello, as well as roles in Hamlet and Richard II.
Christopher Plummer (2017 Dickens biopic The Man Who Invented Christmas)
Another veteran Shakespearean. His roles include the title role in Hamlet (including in 1964's Hamlet at Elsinore, with The Muppet Christmas Carol's Scrooge Michael Caine as his Horatio) Iago in Othello, Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet, Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing, Bardolph in Henry IV: Part I, the title role in Henry V, Leontes in The Winter's Tale, Sir Andrew Aguecheek in Twelfth Night, and the title role in King Lear.

quarter three book favorites! (qts 1 & 2) once again, in the order in which i read them:
I'm gonna cheat and list three witch books I read in a row because they're all kinda linked in my head: The Change, about three women who gain magic powers after they go through menopause, The Witches of Moonshyne Manor about a coven of witches in their eighties who must protect their home, and The Rules of Magic, a prequel to Practical Magic- though I preferred the even farther reaching Magic Lessons.
The Fifth Season by NK Jemisin is a really hard book to describe haha but it is as great as everyone says it is.
Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone by Benjamin Stevenson is a really fun, voicey mystery. A complicated family reunion at a ski lodge gets more complicated when people start dying.
Painted Devils by Margaret Owen is the sequel to one of my favorite fairy tale retellings, Little Thieves. I'll admit this one isn't nearly as good as the first, but still pretty great.
Sisters of the Lost Nation by Nick Medina is a mystery novel about an Indigenous teenager who dives into the mystery of the missing women on her reservation after her sister disappears. This is marketed as a horror and I think that's a bit of a mistake- the horror is in the epidemic of missing and murdered indigenous women, and this book is not a fast-paced slasher or thriller. It is great though.
Northranger by Rey Terciero is a graphic novel, and it's a queer, modern retelling of Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey. So fun! Lots of discussion of horror media and how it both helps and hurts queer people.
Vampires of el Norte by Isabel Canas is a gothic historical romance set in Mexico, as vaqueros attempt to stop the invasion of the United States- and the vampires. Mostly a romance, but so delightful.
Better Living Through Birding by Christian Cooper was a fantastic memoir! Written by the Black man who was birding in Central Park when a white woman called the cops on him, this memoir is primarily about how much Cooper loves birds and what it was like for him to grow up gay, Black, and nerdy. Highly recommend the audiobook, which is read by Cooper and his passion comes through his voice so beautifully.
Carmilla by J Sheridan Le Fanu is a gothic classic that I'd never read, and I really enjoyed it! I love classic vampires.
The September House by Carissa Orlando is a delightful haunted house book about a woman who refuses to leave her haunted victorian manor. It has a turret, after all! She is annoyed when her adult daughter comes to investigate, because she knows that her daughter will just overreact to the bleeding walls. Fun and funny, with a lovely amount of depth about why families hide things from each other.
