Alhaitham couldn’t keep his stupid pretty mouth shut about Kaveh’s financial decisions- so what if he couldn’t pay his bills, at least he’d been able to help that poor old lady afford her medicine- and Kaveh was sick of it. “Kaveh, you could afford a house with the money you’ve donated this past year, don’t you see th-“ “Alhaitham, if you’re so keen on my being able to move out as soon as possible, then why don’t you just kick me out?” “Now that’s just ridiculous, I don’t-“ “Unlike you, I happen to find it important to be selfless!” “If it is selfishness to wish to see you happy, then so be it! I will accept your accusation of selfishness.” “You- what.”

Alhaitham was staring at him intensely, back straight, but holding too still, his face wearing the same nervous yet determined expression he’d given the off-color sushi last week when their restaurant had no alternatives and Kaveh was too hungry to try another place. Kaveh’s mind reeled as Alhaitham spoke again. “Think what you want of me for saying it- it may be selfish to want nothing but the best for those I love, even should it come at the expense of others- but I believe you must put yourself first more often, and I will continue to insist upon it if I have but the slightest chance of prevailing this wish upon you.” “Wait, but- your… wish… is for me to be happy?” Alhaitham looked… lost for words? Was it possible? He always had a response, for everything. What was going on. “Alhaitham, you’re freaking me out. Are you okay?” Alhaitham said nothing, just shifted a little, awkwardly. Then Kaveh’s brain  caught up to what else Alhaitham had said. “Wait, did you say you love me!?” Now Alhaitham just looked like he was literally dying. “I’m sorry, I should not have brought up my romantic feelings toward you, seeing as you do not-“ Kaveh barely registered that Alhaitham had apologized, yet another record for him, as he surged forward to put him out of his misery by wrapping him in a tight hug. Alhaitham squirmed a bit, but after a moment, put his arms carefully around Kaveh, as though he didn’t know if it was okay. But then he let out a breath he must have been holding, and settled there, and it was like they fit together. Kaveh was still catching up, apparently, because his brain slammed into yet another new, breathtaking realization- or, rather, idea. In fact, Kaveh thought it might be his most genius idea yet, and he’d designed the Palace of Alcazarzaray. “Alhaitham. Will you kiss me?” He did.
