L’air de la misère / The air of misery
We're at this part in Les Mis Letters so here is my translation and annotations of one of Fantine's songs on the Original Concept Album, "L'air de la misère." The tune of this song would get used in the final musical as Éponine's "On My Own."
You can find a PDF of the translation here: L'air de la misère
youtube
[Fantine] J’avais des si jolis défauts j’étais rêveuse, j’étais coquette un peu naïve, mais pas trop pour ne jamais perdre la tête et je me faisais fête¹ d’un chant d’oiseau, d’un jour nouveau Je n’ai plus qu’une robe grise qui sert aussi de couverture quand le vent glacé de l’hiver tourne la nuit dans ma masure et plus beaucoup d’honneur de dignité au fond du cœur
[Fantine] I had such pretty flaws I was a dreamer, I was a coquette A little naive, but not too much So as to never lose my head And I used to look forward¹ to a bird’s song, to a new day I have no more than one grey dress That also serves as a blanket When the icy winter wind Swirls around my hovel at night And not much honor left Or dignity at the bottom of my heart
NOTE 1. “je me faisais fête” – While “se faire une fête de” means “to look forward to,” I think it’s important to point out that within this phrase is “faire fête,” meaning to celebrate, literally to have a party.
La misère n’est mère de personne² la misère est pourtant sœur des hommes mais personne sur terre n’en veut pour fille comme bâtarde née dans un cachot de la Bastille La misère enfante la détresse bien des vices et toutes les faiblesses³ la misère lâche la bête en l’homme et la mésange alors en chienne errante se transforme⁴
Misery is the mother of no one² Misery is nevertheless a sister of men But no one on this earth wants her for a daughter Like a bastard born in a dungeon of the Bastille Misery gives birth to distress Plenty of weaknesses and all frailties³ Misery lets loose the beast in man And the chickadee transforms into a stray dog⁴
NOTES 2. “La misère n’est mère de personne” – It is important to keep in mind throughout this song that “misery” in French is feminine, so it is referred to as a mother, sister, daughter, etc.
3. “des vices… des faiblesses” – “Vices” could just as well be translated as “vices” and “faiblesses” as “weaknesses / feebleness.” I simply chose the two English words that I thought sounded best.
4. “la mésange alors en chienne errante se transforme” – Remember again that misery is feminine, so in this phrase we have “la mésange,” which is a small cute bird (family Paridae which includes tits, titmice, and chickadees) with a feminine noun, and the noun for dog here is also feminine. In English the word for a female dog, a bitch, has strong negative connotations whereas the word used here, “chienne” can simply mean a female dog, so I chose to translate it as “dog.”
Il faut qu’on se sente survivre dans un enfant qu’on a fait vivre⁵ et qu’en sa source d’innocence on noie notre désespérance⁶ pour ne pas mettre fin à cette vie sans lendemain [Refrain]
You need to feel you are surviving In a child you brought to life⁵ And in whose source of innocence We drown our hopelessness⁶ So as not to put an end To this life with no tomorrow [Chorus]
NOTES 5. “survivre ... vivre” – I want to highlight the chosen words here. “Vivre” means “to live” so it’s easy to recognize it in the word “survivre” (to survive) and the phrase “faire vivre” (to bring to life / to give birth to). In addition, while I translated these lines using the pronoun “you,” in French the pronoun is “one.”
6. “source d’innocence … on noie” – Here, the word “source” is exactly equivalent to the English, but should evoke the meaning “the source of river / spring / of water” due to the next line which refers to drowning in this source. In this sentence, the literal French is again “one drowns” (which can also be translated as “you” or the royal “we”), however “notre désespérance” explicitly uses the word “our” for “our hopelessness.”
I've always thought it was interesting that Fantine got two songs in the Original Concept Album- this one, in addition to "J'avais rêvé d'une autre vie" which is the direct equivalent to "I Dreamed a Dream." In order, L'air de la misère comes before she sells her hair, while I Dreamed a Dream comes after and ends with reference to her sex work, and what would become the song "Lovely Ladies."

So I finally decided to sit down and tackle Set Me Free (超度我) by FloruitShow, aka the most recent holder of the coveted 'oh I love this song but it's fucking untranslatable' spot in my brain, also a song I can confidently recommend by saying I can almost guarantee you've never heard anything like it before. Give it a listen! I promise you won't regret it
Note: the reason this song is such a pain in the ass is because the chorus consists almost entirely of quotes directly from the Diamond Sutra, so translated lines in bold are lines I took from this translation, with some help from this site. Usually I take pride in saying translations by me but let's just say translating the Diamond Sutra is... a bit beyond me
超度我 - Set Me Free
来不及
There's no time left
最后一句想你来不及让你知道
No time left to tell you one last 'I miss you'
再也回不去
We can't ever return
那个有彩虹出现的下午
To that afternoon when the rainbow appeared
再也感受不到你温度
I won't ever feel your warmth again
如果你留我在梦里
If you could leave me in my dreams
我会放弃呼吸
I will give up my breath
请 超度我
Please, set me free
若以色见我以音声求我
If one sees me in form, if one seeks me in sound
是人行邪道 不 不能见如来
He practices a deviant way and cannot, cannot see the Tathāgata
一切有为法 如梦幻泡影
All conditioned phenomena are like dreams, illusions, bubbles, shadows
如露亦如电 应作如是观
Like dew drops and lightning flashes, contemplate them thus
非空非有 亦空亦有
Present yet absent, existent yet non-existent
不生法相 无所住
Do not conceive of Dharmas, have a mind of no abode
非空非有 亦空亦有
Present yet absent, existent yet non-existent
不生法相 无所住
Do not conceive of Dharmas, have a mind of no abode
对不起
I'm sorry
不经意就在你的影子里活下去
It's so easy to live on in your shadow
我不在意
But I don't mind
不过是白日梦里一瞬息
It's just a moment in a daydream
为何还起念动心
Why does my heart still stir?
怪你名字太熟悉
It's all because your name is so familiar
当我是一花一叶一春木
If I could be a flower, a leaf, a spring sapling
可否回到世界之初
Could we return to the beginning of it all?
请 超度我
Please, set me free
若以色见我以音声求我
If one sees me in form, if one seeks me in sound
是人行邪道 不 不能见如来
He practices a deviant way and cannot, cannot see the Tathāgata
一切有为法 如梦幻泡影
All conditioned phenomena are like dreams, illusions, bubbles, shadows
如露亦如电 应作如是观
Like dew drops and lightning flashes, contemplate them thus
非空非有 亦空亦有
Present yet absent, existent yet non-existent
不生法相 无所住
Do not conceive of Dharmas, have a mind of no abode
非空非有 亦空亦有
Present yet absent, existent yet non-existent
不生法相 无所住
Do not conceive of Dharmas, have a mind of no abode
我的执念 万千千千
My obsessions, hundreds of thousands
放不下地 放不下天
I can't let go of the earth, I can't let go of the sky
我把红线折折剪剪
I cut and fold at the red string
落入凡间镜重圆
I fall to the mortal realm to seek reunion

Every day I remember the amount of lost potential that Miaculous ladybug has, and I fall into the biggest pit of despair
youtube
THIS. THIS WAS THE ORIGINAL PLAN AND OH MY GOD WAS IT THE WORST DECISION TO DIVERGE FROM THIS
The final released show had a chokehold on my class when we were in like what, second grade? And we thought it was amazing (for whatever reason)
I KNEW PEOPLE WHO WATCHED IT IN THE ORIGINAL FRENCH THEY LIKED IT SO MUCH
But putting that aside, THIS WOULD'VE BEEN SO. MUCH. BETTER.
THE DECISION TO HAVE FELIX AS THE MAIN LOVE INTEREST WOULD MAKE A MUCH MORE INTERESTING DYNAMIC, THERE WOULD BE A VERY GOOD REASON FOR HIS "GRUMPYNESS" BEING SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN ISOLATED HIS WHOLE LIFE, AS ADRIEN'S "OH I'M SOCIALLY AWKWARD BUT HAVE FRIENDS INSTANTLY AND NEVER HAVE DIFFICULTY WITH ANY SITUATION" MAKES NO SENSE AND IS UNREALISTIC.
But now that I have calmed down, let me explain further.
So the premise of the show is that there's these things called "miraculouses" and they are pices of jewelry that give their wearer powers, correct? Yes.
Now as far as I can remember from the months my little baby self spent thinking about how much cooler this would have been (he is entirely correct) and the information I gathered, part of the premise was that if you put one of them on, you cannot remove them unless your true love kisses you (?)
(Correct me if I'm wrong on that)
Which would mean WE HAVE WAY HIGHER STAKES FOR HIS ROMANCE TO SUCCEED
I do not know what the original plan was with the weird, stalker behavior Marinette has in the final show, but based on this trailer alone I'd have to think that it was absent from the og concept, WHICH IS GOOD. GREAT ACTUALLY.
Moving on to the character designs-
I WOULD KILL TO SEE THESE FOR FIVE SEASONS. GENUENLY
THEY ARE SO MUCH MORE EXPRESSIVE AND MEMORABLE
JUST LOOK AT THE SILHOUETTE OF THE OG LADYBUG! LOOK AT THOSE RIBBONS
LOOK AT HOW MUCH MORE CLOTH-LIKE THE COSTUMES LOOK AND FEEL
THERE ARE GEUINE FOLDS IN CHAT NOIR'S COSTUME
LOOK AT HIS HAIR
THE STYLE ITSELF IS SO MUCH BETTER AND DO NOT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON HOW SHIT A DECISION IT WAS TO MAKE IT 3D INSTEAD OF 2D
(well executed 3d animation can truly look absolutely gorgeous- just look at the movie!)
I respect 3d animation a lot, but something SO CLEARLY inspired by magical girl anime shoul honor it by being th same medium, not to mention how much more freedom 2D gives you
overall, AMAZING concept and bad execution for the final show, and I am not the best with words so I couldn't communicate all of the things I wanted to say, but if you stuck around for my yapping, Thank you!
(also I don't know how to end this)

finished our tamers rewatch
still a little unclear as to how operation doodlebug managed to affect more than just the digimon that were affected by the red card (on screen: guilmon, renamon, terriermon, and cyberdramon; and being generous and assuming that since they were in the bubble: guardromon, marineangemon, and lopmon)
i understand why those affected by the red card would have been affected by them making the d-reaper evolve backwards (having the d-reaper's code in them making the program work on them), but impmon has zero excuse for having the red card data
so like??? huh???
my brother had assumed that doodlebug just affected all digital entities, but considering it was working directly on the whirlpool the d-reaper made, i'm not entirely sure that's the case, and the sub doesn't exactly explain it any more to clarify.

Wildest thing supernatural ever pulled was the “two prophets can’t exist on earth at once” thing cause it results in a malformed prophet and..something something balance of the universe..something like that..I can’t remember. Like..what do you mean we can’t just have a cool prophet duo? We just deserved more prophets in general! They were so interesting and had layers to them, their whole entire concept was so cool to see and yet we saw so little of them in a sense. I just wish they were utilized a biiit more.

La mort de Gavroche / Gavroche’s death
Oh it's here, the chapter that breaks my heart to pieces every time. If you haven't heard it before I highly encourage listening to the Original French Concept Album version of Gavroche's death. In my opinion, it is by far the saddest and most impactful version. Below you'll find my translation of the lyrics with annotations. The PDF can be found here: La Mort de Gavroche translation
youtube
Gavroche Cette fois, Javert, t’arrêteras plus personne La mort t’a coffré à perpétuité J’espère qu’là-haut, on s’ra pas dans l’même cachot Sur terre déjà, on n’était pas du même combat¹
Gavroche This time, Javert, you’ll no longer be arresting anyone Death has locked you up for good I hope up there, we won’t be in the same dungeon On earth already, we weren’t in the same fight¹
NOTES 1. “du même combat” literally means “of the same fight” but I believe this is using “même combat!” which is an expression of solidarity meaning “we’re on the same side.” I kept the translation in the lyrics more literal since “to be in the same fight” in English can also convey the idea of solidarity.
Courfeyrac Sacré Gavroche, t’as toujours l’mot pour rire² C’est pas la parlotte³ qui te f’ra guérir Marius Ah les salauds, ils ont tiré sur un enfant Ils ont, sans savoir, abattu le printemps Quel dieu cruel s’abreuve du sang des innocents Et combien faudra-t-il pleurer d’combattants?
Courfeyrac Blasted Gavroche, you always have something funny to say² It’s not the gift of the gab³ that will heal you Marius Ah the bastards, they’ve shot at a kid They have, without knowing, shot down spring What cruel god drinks the blood of innocents And how many fighters will we have to cry over?
NOTES 2. “avoir le mot pour rire” is an expression that literally means “always have the word for laughing / a laugh” and is translated as “to make jokes, be funny.”
3. “la parlotte” means “chitchat, chatter, chinwag, talking shop, etc.” I decided to translate it as “the gift of the gab” because that felt like a more appropriate term given the previous line which implies that Gavroche is good at always making jokes.
Gavroche Notre drapeau était par terre Rouge de honte et bleu sali Moi, j’ai bondi blanc⁴ de colère “Allons, enfants de la patrie”⁵
Gavroche Our flag was on the ground Red with shame and dirtied blue Me, I leapt up, white⁴ with anger “Allons, enfants de la patrie”⁵
NOTES 4. “Rouge de honte … blanc de colère” This sequence uses expressions that incorporate the colors of the French flag (blue, white, red). “Rouge de honte” means “red with shame,” as in “blushing with shame” or a “flush of shame” but can also simply be translated as “ashamed.” I haven’t been able to figure out if “bleu sali” is an expression or is simply referring to the dirtied blue of the flag on the ground. “Blanc de colère” is, as in English, “white with anger.”
5. “Allons, enfants de la patrie!” is a reference to the first line of the Marseillaise, the national anthem of France. It means “Let’s go, children of the fatherland/motherland!”
Un mec m’a vu, qui m’a crié : “Qui vive!”⁶ J’ai dit : "Révolution française" Ça lui a pas plu ma franchise M’a mis un pruneau⁷ dans la fraise⁸ C’est comme ça, on gagne pas à chaque fois
A guy saw me, shouted at me “Who lives?”⁶ I said : “The French revolution” That didn’t please him, my frankness, Put a slug⁷ in my face⁸ It’s like that, you don’t win every time
NOTES 6. “Qui vive!” is an expression that literally means “who lives?” but is translated as “who goes there?” Just like the English expression, it has same the context of someone on watch or in a military environment asking an unknown person to identify themselves. However, I chose to keep the literal translation in the lyrics because it ties the pun in the response together. The response is “Révolution française (the French Revolution),” because a common refrain is “Vive la revolution française!” literally, “Live the French revolution!”
7. “pruneau” is argot (slang). The word “pruneau” means “prune” but it was used as slang for a bullet.
8. “fraise” is another argot word. This time the word for “strawberry” means “face / mug.”
Donnez, donnez⁹, ma casquette aux copains C’est tout c’que j’ai et j’en n’ai plus besoin Je suis tombé par terre, C’est la faute à Voltaire¹⁰ Le nez dans le ruisseau, C’est la faute à...
Give, give⁹, my cap to my friends It’s all I have, and I don’t need it anymore I fell to the ground It’s the fault of Voltaire¹⁰ Nose in the gutter, It’s the fault of…
NOTES 9. “Donnez, donnez” is a callback to the refrain used in Gavroche’s introductory song on the Original Concept Album (the equivalent of Look Down).
10. “C’est la faute à Voltaire” – I would have preferred to translate these lines as “It’s Voltaire’s/Rousseau’s fault” but I kept the French wording of “It’s the fault of Voltaire/Rousseau” so that the final line cuts off in the same manner.
As usual, corrections and commentaries are welcome!

i think i found a way to bring up bad buddy in my bachelor thesis, but i'm gonna have to restructure half of my plans
#originally i wanted to analyze the difficulties that come up when trying to translate thai pronouns and honorifics and polite particles#but then i was like ''shit i only got roughly 9000 words i'm gonna have to get more specific'' so i decided to focus on pronouns only#but unfortunately in bbs there isn't really something relating to pronouns only that causes difficulties in translation#there is plenty of other things that can be tricky to translate like pat's line username or the thing about pran's password#or in ep2 when pran's friends are discussing pat's note and how it's gotta be a guy from the use of ครับ (krub)#anyway if i somehow manage to restructure my thesis in a way where i actually CAN go back to my original plan#on focusing on all 3: pronouns and honorifics and polite particles#then that scene in ep2 pt3 where patpran are teasing each other about the dumplings/green tea drinks is actually perfect for my thesis!!#now i just gotta figure out how to talk about all 3 of these topics and still keep my thesis at around 9000 words....#airenyah plappert#adrm#bbs#i have until friday to figure this out bc that's when i'm gonna have to hand in my exposé#edit: i'm so stupid if i go back to my original plan then that plan included bringing bbs into it anyway#that ep2 scene where the architecture gang is discussing pat's note is the perfect example#of a tricky spot when it comes to translating thai polite particles#usually when a sentence includes a polite particle you'd try to express the translation in a polite register too#but that's a moment where they're explicitly referencing a linguistic concept that just doesn't exist in english#so how are you gonna translate that for an audience who has no idea what polite particles are#and have the translation make sense for them#although on my bbs rewatch the past two nights i found one or the other moment relating to pronouns#that i might be able to use#we'll see
