Reverse engineers bust sleazy gig work platform

If you'd like an essay-formatted version of this post to read or share, here's a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/11/23/hack-the-class-war/#robo-boss
A COMPUTER CAN NEVER BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE
THEREFORE A COMPUTER MUST NEVER MAKE A MANAGEMENT DECISION
Supposedly, these lines were included in a 1979 internal presentation at IBM; screenshots of them routinely go viral:
https://twitter.com/SwiftOnSecurity/status/1385565737167724545?lang=en
The reason for their newfound popularity is obvious: the rise and rise of algorithmic management tools, in which your boss is an app. That IBM slide is right: turning an app into your boss allows your actual boss to create an "accountability sink" in which there is no obvious way to blame a human or even a company for your maltreatment:
https://profilebooks.com/work/the-unaccountability-machine/
App-based management-by-bossware treats the bug identified by the unknown author of that IBM slide into a feature. When an app is your boss, it can force you to scab:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/07/30/computer-says-scab/#instawork
Or it can steal your wages:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/04/12/algorithmic-wage-discrimination/#fishers-of-men
But tech giveth and tech taketh away. Digital technology is infinitely flexible: the program that spies on you can be defeated by another program that defeats spying. Every time your algorithmic boss hacks you, you can hack your boss back:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/12/02/not-what-it-does/#who-it-does-it-to
Technologists and labor organizers need one another. Even the most precarious and abused workers can team up with hackers to disenshittify their robo-bosses:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/07/08/tuyul-apps/#gojek
For every abuse technology brings to the workplace, there is a liberating use of technology that workers unleash by seizing the means of computation:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/01/13/solidarity-forever/#tech-unions
One tech-savvy group on the cutting edge of dismantling the Torment Nexus is Algorithms Exposed, a tiny, scrappy group of EU hacker/academics who recruit volunteers to reverse engineer and modify the algorithms that rule our lives as workers and as customers:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/12/10/e2e/#the-censors-pen
Algorithms Exposed have an admirable supply of seemingly boundless energy. Every time I check in with them, I learn that they've spun out yet another special-purpose subgroup. Today, I learned about Reversing Works, a hacking team that reverse engineers gig work apps, revealing corporate wrongdoing that leads to multimillion euro fines for especially sleazy companies.
One such company is Foodinho, an Italian subsidiary of the Spanish food delivery company Glovo. Foodinho/Glovo has been in the crosshairs of Italian labor enforcers since before the pandemic, racking up millions in fines – first for failing to file the proper privacy paperwork disclosing the nature of the data processing in the app that Foodinho riders use to book jobs. Then, after the Italian data commission investigated Foodinho, the company attracted new, much larger fines for its out-of-control surveillance conduct.
As all of this was underway, Reversing Works was conducting its own research into Glovo/Foodinho's app, running it on a simulated Android handset inside a PC so they could peer into app's data collection and processing. They discovered a nightmarish world of pervasive, illegal worker surveillance, and published their findings a year ago in November, 2023:
https://www.etui.org/sites/default/files/2023-10/Exercising%20workers%20rights%20in%20algorithmic%20management%20systems_Lessons%20learned%20from%20the%20Glovo-Foodinho%20digital%20labour%20platform%20case_2023.pdf
That report reveals all kinds of extremely illegal behavior. Glovo/Foodinho makes its riders' data accessible across national borders, so Glovo managers outside of Italy can access fine-grained surveillance information and sensitive personal information – a major data protection no-no.
Worse, Glovo's app embeds trackers from a huge number of other tech platforms (for chat, analytics, and more), making it impossible for the company to account for all the ways that its riders' data is collected – again, a requirement under Italian and EU data protection law.
All this data collection continues even when riders have clocked out for the day – its as though your boss followed you home after quitting time and spied on you.
The research also revealed evidence of a secretive worker scoring system that ranked workers based on undisclosed criteria and reserved the best jobs for workers with high scores. This kind of thing is pervasive in algorithmic management, from gig work to Youtube and Tiktok, where performers' videos are routinely suppressed because they crossed some undisclosed line. When an app is your boss, your every paycheck is docked because you violated a policy you're not allowed to know about, because if you knew why your boss was giving you shitty jobs, or refusing to show the video you spent thousands of dollars making to the subscribers who asked to see it, then maybe you could figure out how to keep your boss from detecting your rulebreaking next time.
All this data-collection and processing is bad enough, but what makes it all a thousand times worse is Glovo's data retention policy – they're storing this data on their workers for four years after the worker leaves their employ. That means that mountains of sensitive, potentially ruinous data on gig workers is just lying around, waiting to be stolen by the next hacker that breaks into the company's servers.
Reversing Works's report made quite a splash. A year after its publication, the Italian data protection agency fined Glovo another 5 million euros and ordered them to cut this shit out:
https://reversing.works/posts/2024/11/press-release-reversing.works-investigation-exposes-glovos-data-privacy-violations-marking-a-milestone-for-worker-rights-and-technology-accountability/
As the report points out, Italy is extremely well set up to defend workers' rights from this kind of bossware abuse. Not only do Italian enforcers have all the privacy tools created by the GDPR, the EU's flagship privacy regulation – they also have the benefit of Italy's 1970 Workers' Statute. The Workers Statute is a visionary piece of legislation that protects workers from automated management practices. Combined with later privacy regulation, it gave Italy's data regulators sweeping powers to defend Italian workers, like Glovo's riders.
Italy is also a leader in recognizing gig workers as de facto employees, despite the tissue-thin pretense that adding an app to your employment means that you aren't entitled to any labor protections. In the case of Glovo, the fine-grained surveillance and reputation scoring were deemed proof that Glovo was employer to its riders.
Reversing Works' report is a fascinating read, especially the sections detailing how the researchers recruited a Glovo rider who allowed them to log in to Glovo's platform on their account.
As Reversing Works points out, this bottom-up approach – where apps are subjected to technical analysis – has real potential for labor organizations seeking to protect workers. Their report established multiple grounds on which a union could seek to hold an abusive employer to account.
But this bottom-up approach also holds out the potential for developing direct-action tools that let workers flex their power, by modifying apps, or coordinating their actions to wring concessions out of their bosses.
After all, the whole reason for the gig economy is to slash wage-bills, by transforming workers into contractors, and by eliminating managers in favor of algorithms. This leaves companies extremely vulnerable, because when workers come together to exercise power, their employer can't rely on middle managers to pressure workers, deal with irate customers, or step in to fill the gap themselves:
https://projects.itforchange.net/state-of-big-tech/changing-dynamics-of-labor-and-capital/
Only by seizing the means of computation, workers and organized labor can turn the tables on bossware – both by directly altering the conditions of their employment, and by producing the evidence and tools that regulators can use to force employers to make those alterations permanent.

Dragon Age Fandom Crafts/Traditional Art Booklet -- Information & FAQ Post

This post will be updated with information, questions & answers, deadlines, and other relevant items as they come up. Click the post link back to this original post to make sure you're viewing the most updated version--I will list update & post edit dates at the top so you can be sure you're referencing the correct version and what info may have changed.
Original post date: July 10 2025
Other links:
[this section is reserved to include links to other posts relating to this project as they are created, for organizational ease]
Basic Information
What is this project?
This will be a collaborative artbook where people can submit photos of any kind of 3d or traditional art piece they've made relating to the Dragon Age universe.
The "physical art" content requirement encompasses things like fiber arts (embroidery/cross stitch/crochet/knitting/yarn making), sculpture, cosplay/prop making, accessory making, papercraft (paper making/origami/papercutting), calligraphy, pottery, recipes/cooking, jewelry making, stained glass, engraving, the numerous traditional art methods (watercolor/charcoal/pencils/acrylic paint/oil paint/crayons/etc), or any other handmade, physical art style.
Aka, almost anything not purely digital art or writing. Digital art and text are the standards of almost every other fandom artbook/chapbook/zine. This would be an opportunity for the crafts/art forms that don't fit into those spaces already.
What would the final product look like?
A digital PDF file--exact dimensions to be determined--mimicking a physical booklet, in that it is structured as 2 side by side vertical pages around a center spine.
Each artist will have 1-4 pages (exact number tbd) per item to showcase their work. If you just have one photo/creation to showcase, that's plenty! If you'd like to show off multiple angles for a 3d art piece, we'll determine how many images to include and how best to organize their layout. Multiple art pieces per person are also fine, but will probably be capped at 8-10 pages per artist just to ensure a variety of creators/submissions. Each artist can include how they would like to be credited, as well as optionally submit a short text bio or description of their craft/art format of choice to be included in their page spreads as well.
Submissions will consist of photographs of the artworks, to highlight that they exist in physical space, rather than scans. Examples of ways to prop up, frame, or otherwise stage art examples can be provided.
For the "booklet" format, photos/art can therefore be uploaded as side by side vertical images, or one larger landscape oriented piece, for each page spread. As this is a digital product only, the 'spine' area would not actually fold/distort the image. I will encourage artists to leave room along the edges of their photos as "bleed" however.
Who can participate?
Anyone. This will be an open project, not juried or application based. There will be no approval process for what is "good enough" beyond meeting the content requirement of a physical art piece. You can just submit your art! This is an open house showcase, not a finely curated museum.
However the photos themselves meet minimum quality standards for a digital booklet, as much as possible. This means they should be visually decipherable at at least... idk.. 8x12 inches and 72dpi? Exact dimensions/resolution TBD. Smartphone camera quality is fine. Flip phone camera from the early 2000s probably not. If you can borrow a smartphone or digital camera to take an in focus and well lit photo, you're good.
What would this cost?
The collaborative artbook would be freely uploaded and sent to all participants, and hosted online for anyone who wants to look at it. Since there would be no physical version, there are no production, shipping, or other costs to compensate for. Only the time and effort of those involved, freely donated.
Do I have to make something new?
Nope! If you've already made something and you're proud and want to show the world, that's perfect! Even if you made it a decade ago.
If you're feeling inspired and would LIKE to create something new to showcase, go for it!
There will not be any restrictions on sharing your creation elsewhere in the meanwhile.
Are there any restrictions on art content?
It must understandably relate to the Dragon Age frachise in some way. For some types of art/craft, this can include items "inspired by" the aesthetic or colors of a character or setting, even if they are not direct fanart. Example: carding wool into yarn with fibers and colors thoughtfully reflecting a specific companion's outfit/personality; or making a piece of jewelry you think represents that character in some way.
No racism or whitewashing of canon characters of color. No criticizing/demeaning characters or creators on the basis of gender, sexuality, or other aspects of identity. No hate speech or bullying in general.
I would like to keep this out of the "explicit content" zone, but that does not mean it has to be entirely "safe for work." Aka, implied or tasteful figure nudity in a traditional art piece--sure. Porn/explicit sexual content--no. Nudity of a real human in a photograph--no. This is because the idea here is to create an end product that can be shared in multiple spaces and groups--I would like it to be something that no one will feel awkward sending to friends and family to say "look at what me and these other people made!"
Are there any restrictions on art form?
The majority percentage of the art piece has to be created by you personally. You do not need to have made every component of the piece, but through compilation or transformation it should be a creation that can be distinctively called your own.
Things that are acceptable: crochet or knitwear of a pattern you designed or fair-use purchased made with commercial yarn; a cosplay you assembled through combination of sewing, modifying existing garments, and purchasing some elements like shoes/accessories; a piece of jewelry created from purchased lose beads and chain; a painting representing a scene or characters from the franchise in which the artist used references for poses or features.
Things that are not transformative enough to count as original: a commercial lineart coloring page you filled in; a cosplay you entirely purchased online with no handmade elements; tracing a screenshot onto paper.
Artwork from other artists outside the artbook may not be used without their permission, even if transformative. Example: printing out another artist's fanart and cutting them out to make a collage.
If partial elements of your piece come from something made by another artist but it falls within their own permissions for fair use, we will include text space for you to credit your resources. Example: your cosplay is mostly handmade garments but features a prop or accessory you purchased from another artist; or a diorama scene that includes a small 3d print structure from an outside artist like GizmoForge on etsy as one component, while other decor, details, and painting are all original.
If you are unsure on if your piece does not qualify for either of the above--message me and we'll discuss.
How do I sign up and when is the deadline?
TBD. Right now this is in the "gathering interested participants" stage. You can leave a comment here on this post on tumblr, send me a message on bsky (@/threadwolf), or email me at [email protected] if you would like to be included and notified of how to submit your art pieces (which will probably via be a google form or email).
As for deadline--depends how many people are interested, and how long it takes to assemble the submissions into a layout. If an unexpectedly large number of people want to sign up, we will do multiple volumes in waves to keep things from getting too overwhelming. But my estimate is it would no the finished earlier than the end of August just based on my own existing commitments.
Once more details have been ironed out, I will post and send out further information to participants.
FAQ
As questions arise, I will add more answers here. I'm placing it below a cut to avoid spamming the dash too much.
Why are you doing this?
I like having tangible downloads of stuff I think is cool, both for personal enjoyment and as an archival method. I often find that artists I admire online have deleted old work, and get sad I can't look at it anymore. This artbook would be a nice thing to have so any of us can come back and look at some of the cool stuff people in this fandom have put time and effort into creating, and enjoy seeing our own creations among them.
I feel like a lot of fandom “products” are juried or application based currently, and thought it’d be fun to do an open, opt-in one for people; as well as being inclusive of less-represented crafts/hobbies
Why me, specifically? I was going to make a little booklet of just my own Dragon Age themed embroideries, but they take a really long time to finish, so I don't have that many pieces done yet. So I thought it would be more fun to open the idea to others into a bigger collaborative project, instead of my measly 9 pictures.
What can I submit?
Ask yourself: Is it inspired by or related to Dragon Age?
And then ask: Was this created with my hands in some way?
Then yes!
What if my art isn't good enough to be included?
The idea is that this is an inclusive project, not exclusive. As long as your art fits the content guidelines regarding originality and theme, it's good enough! This is a celebration of different forms of creation rather than a product to be judged or sold.
What if my photos of my art piece aren't good/don't look nice?
If you are worried about taking nice photos, I have photography experience and am happy to talk you through both 1. settings/setup to make sure the image comes out sharp, clear, and color-accurate; and 2. ways to spruce up a photo background or surroundings to best show off your finished piece of art.
What if I want to submit something that's not visual, but also isn't digital art/writing, such as music?
Probably there are art forms that a digital booklet simply is not equipped to showcase. But if you have creative ways of visualizing it let's give it a shot! For instance a musical piece could be represented by a photographed page of sheet music, and we could include a link to a stable online audio file, because that concept would be rad as hell.
Basically message me and we'll brainstorm.
What if I really really want a physical copy?
While I will not be handling any printing outsourcing myself, my goal would be that the resolution, quality, and dimensions of the booklet still meet the most common quality requirements for small-size printing. If participants then desire to pay themselves to get it printed through the service of their choice, they will be able to. HOWEVER, this is not guaranteed, and some photo submissions may be of lower resolution than others.
While I will encourage people to take photos with enough surrounding space to act as bleed for physical printing, things like center spine distortion would depend on the kind of print service you choose.
There's always the good ol fallback of stealing time on your work/school printer, and stapling it together yourself if you really want.
If I want to support this, even though it's free, can I donate money in some way?
No. I do not want that hassle of on my taxes, or to have to figure out fair distribution among participants. If you're in the spirit of giving, please donate to a charity of your choice, or buy a piece of art from an artist you admire.
Why does the blog icon look like that?
I wanted a representation of the medium level of effort and maximum level of casualness I visualize for this project. a half-assed photoshop version of the Dragon Age: Origins cover seemed like a good way to convey that spirit. Presumably at some point I will upload an equally silly banner image to accompany it.
I have another question not already here
Comment it on this post, or send a message/tumblr ask if you'd prefer it stay anonymous. You can also reach me at @/threadwolf o n bluesky or by email at [email protected].
Why aren't you calling this a zine?
simply put i personally just disagree with the term "zine" to represent this style of collaborative content. I am aware that in fandom spaces this term has eclipsed its former meaning of small, homemade, noncommercial products (which is how they are still referenced as in comics, punk, or alternative spaces). As soon as something is intensively formatted, perfect bound, or requires outside production companies to manufacture--I frankly think it's left "zine" territory and entered the definition of an artbook or chapbook.
While this end product would not be a physical item, if it gets more than 3 people involved in submitting works, I just think it's big enough to count as a fandom artbook showcase, instead of a zine.

To everyone who asked, and to everyone who didn't:
Yes. I have somewhere between 1,000 and 2,000 of TwoSet's videos, all in HD quality. LINK BELOW
Earlier this year in 2024, I downloaded every single TwoSet Violin public video from their YouTube and scoured other sites like Bilibili and Facebook to get videos they'd deleted from at least one platform. My goal was to make some fandom compilation videos that'd require going through every video.
I do not have the last few months of 2024 (which I'm kicking myself for... I literally almost did a download update on SUNDAY). But I have almost everything.
2 mil, 3 mil, 4 mil, Fantasia, Hilary Hahn or Ray Chen collabs, Producer Shaun, professional versus beginner, violin charades, that cheeky skit you shared on Facebook in 2016
Their world tour VODs, including my own personal captures of their latest VOD stream
Some of the content from their Facebook kickstarter livestreams that I found from other fans.
I've been collecting all their TikTok videos currently, too. I've downloaded a spattering of their Instagram stories from 2024 and might have a small collection of recent Instagram videos, too.
I do not have everything, but I have a fuckton and I want to share it with as many people as possible, and collaborate with as many people as possible to fill in the missing pieces.
Please contact me if you have your own archives or know people working on other archives. I'm talking with a few people about starting a Google Drive project, but I don't know the big names in the TSV fandom and thus could be missing out on people who've done a lot of other work
It's more likely that this will clear over in the coming days / weeks / month / whatever and we'll have their official channel again. I'm still going to keep believing that. But it doesn't erase the importance of making sure the media we love doesn't become lost media. I have respect for content creators to monitor what does and doesn't stay on their platform, but for the sake of preservation of media, for the sake of helping a community, I want to make sure this archive is in place and widely accessible to TwoSetters.
My current cloud server is VERY MUCH a work in progress. I am in the middle of an extremely busy week and trying to do this around an office job and a half. It will take me time to upload everything, and even more time to organize everything. But the cloud server link is active, and I will keep people updated about the progress of my archiving through a PDF text file (not yet uploaded) in said cloud. If I collaborate with people for Google Drive systems, if I do other backups, I will let people know there and on my other social media accounts.
I am new and naive to Terabox. I started with Terabox because it's free to upload up to a terabyte of content. I think it should be free to download everything in full quality, but I don't know. People should inform me how it works. It's currently -- I'm sorry -- VERY poorly organized and requires Scrolling (TM), but short of that issue (which will be fixed with organization), I hope it gets people what they need.
Also: Reddit has suspended me for a few days lol (really I'm getting a slap on the wrist for how blatantly I was marching about), so if people want to start spreading this link to others in private chats elsewhere with known TwoSetters, the more the merrier! The purpose of this is to be a resource, either short-term or long-term.

Hello, I am reading a Filipino short story, and for a $5 donation you can listen to me read it
Things you can look forward to finding in this short story:
A devil
A witch
A magic mirror
An evil moon
A story that comes back around to the beginning
Only 1 person has sent me proof of donation so far 🥹 As I said, I will be sending the story this Friday, which is already today here in the PH, but I'll wait for some more hours in case anyone still wants to catch up and donate 🙏
Please let this incentivize you into donating to the Palestinian fundraisers in my pinned, but if this fictional story really doesn't pique your interest even a little bit, then be moved by the actual stories of these real life families, who are trying to endure in the face of the unimaginable cruelty being inflicted upon them by Israel and the American Empire.
Please donate to Mohamed, Yousef, and Karam's brother Ismail today:
Ismail has been separated from the rest of his family, and is stuck in the north of Gaza where things are even more difficult and dangerous due to the IOF's relentless attacks. He had only 4 donations in the last 24 hours, and if you look at the people who donated, you can see that 2 of them is just their organizer Layla and a friend on Instagram. He has gone for days and weeks with no donations at all, and without his family even to support him, this could mean life or death for Ismail.
Please donate what you can today, and if you would like to listen/read the story I am describing above, message me the proof of donation and I will send you an audio file of me reading the story, plus a PDF copy.

Once you're in, you’ll have access to thousands of free and paid patterns, forums, yarn databases, and tools. Please add me as a friend once you've created you're account! I'd love to see what all of you are up to!
Once your account is set up, you can take this time to set up your profile. Mind is linked with a couple of projects I'm working on, my blog, and I'm currently working on building out my yarn stash database.
Explore Patterns
One of Ravelry’s biggest draws is its massive pattern library. You can search by:
Craft (knitting, crochet, weaving, etc.)
Yarn weight
Project type (socks, sweaters, shawls, etc.)
Free vs. paid
Difficulty level
Each pattern includes notes from the designer, photos, and—best of all—user-submitted projects so you can see how the pattern works up in different yarns or sizes. Ravelry has a really great set of filters, so I suggest playing around with it and seeing what works best for you!
Log Your Projects
Want to remember what size needles you used for that hat last winter? Or which yarn didn’t work out so well? The “Projects” tab lets you document every detail:
Pattern used
Yarn and yardage
Hook or needle size
Notes and modifications
Progress photos
This not only helps you stay organized, but also contributes to the collective wisdom of the Ravelry community.
Stash and Library Features
Stash – Catalog all the yarn you own. This can help when you’re out shopping and wondering, “Do I already have something like this at home?”
Library – Keep track of all the patterns you’ve downloaded or favorited. It’s especially useful for managing PDF files and ensuring you don’t accidentally buy the same pattern twice.
Connect with the Community
Ravelry is also home to thousands of groups based on location, interests, fandoms, yarn brands, designers, and more. You can ask for advice, join knit-alongs, or just chat with fellow fiber nerds.
The forums are active and full of helpful threads on techniques, troubleshooting, and yarn recommendations.
Marketplace and Indie Designers
Ravelry supports thousands of indie designers who sell their patterns directly through the site. You can often message designers with questions, follow your favorites, and even leave tips. Supporting small creators has never been so seamless.
So grab your yarn, your needles, and a cup of tea—Ravelry is waiting.
Have you used Ravelry before? What’s your favorite feature? Drop a comment or share your profile—I’d love to follow your fiber adventures!

if you are downloading online resources
please be mindful of the following:
-organize your shit. name pdfs descriptively, and categorize them by subject or whatever works best for you. you don't want to look through your files a year from now and have to trawl through an unsorted mess of files with strings of numbers for names.
-if you're able, make multiple backups in multiple places of things you don't want to lose. this is a huge issue in digital archiving because drives can fail and get corrupted with time, even when you take the best possible care of them. this usually takes place over a long-ish period of time, but you're better safe than sorry. keep a copy on your computer and on a flash/external drive at least. flash drives are pretty cheap and can have capacity anywhere from 2-64 gb generally, plenty of space for pdfs, text, and html files.
#leo rambles#current events#us politics#feel free to add onto this but i know a lot of people are doing this atm#and as a guy who's really into archival/inventory work i must share the wisdom i have gathered

Those of you who switched or are thinking of switching to Linux, here's a neat summary of all KDE programs in case you are looking for alternatives to Windows programs such as Adobe PDF reader, Notepad++ or Bulk Rename Utility.
All of them are free and open-source and you can use most of them on Windows as well.
Personally, I recommend Okular as a PDF editor (I used this to organize my literature for my master's thesis!) and Kate as a text editor (Fedora comes with KWrite, but I replaced it with Kate as it has more features). KDE Connect is also fantastic for quickly exchanging files between your PC and your phone.

HOW I PERSONALLY ORGANIZE MY DIGITAL ZINE MASTERCOPIES!
Hey zineovators, hello every'all. I am here to note down how I (PERSONALLY) fix around and assign my digitally-made zine mastercopies for easy access. This isn't meant to be a guide and it surely isn't the "correct" way to file zines, nor is this necessary, it might even be redundant for a lot of people, but this is just the way I do it. I have some really crappy guides throughout my yap session, BUT I will provide a REAL example using my own zine at the end! anyhow, let us begin! WHY DO I BOTHER?
because it makes my personal zine creation process more manageable
organization makes it less daunting for me to actually go through with the creation process
It tickles my fish brain to file and sort things, and it makes me happy to do so
so yeah, it all boils down to personal preference. I like making my digital process cleaner and a bit more streamlined, but you really don't have to follow me or use me as a standard. I just do what I do best.
That aside... TERMS I COINED AND WILL BE USING AND EXPLAINING (LIST) (yes this is based off of A/B/O but also coding)
ALPHA Mastercopy (A-Copy, Alpha copy)
BETA Mastercopy (B-Copy, Beta Copy, Physical Mastercopy)
OMEGA Mastercopy (O-Copy, Omega Copy, Assembled Mastercopy)
PRELIMINARIES!
A master copy in my own words is the original mother version of your zine that you can use to duplicate or create more copies for distribution purposes. You usually do not give a master copy away especially if you plan to make more prints of a specific zine design in the future! Also, I'm using the classic 8-page mini-zine format as an example here because...I specialize in mini-zines, lol. With that in mind, here is the portion you are waiting for.
ALPHA MASTER COPY (i.e.. RAW DIGITAL FILE)
The Alpha copy is the version of your zine that you made/scanned into a digital format. Typically I would use a PDF along with the zine design that I pre-formatted for this due to the clarity and easy access of PDF files. I avoid .png or .jpg because flattening my zine files tends to crush the text quality, by a LOT.
The Alpha copy doesn't have to just be the formatted version already. It can be individual panels, single pages, artwork or scanned pages, etc. That's also an alpha copy, but in its own way. The version I'm talking above is print-ready copy that is already prepared.
^ THIS counts as an alpha copy as well.
Now down below is an example of my own alpha copy in PDF format, featuring my DAVID SYLVIAN zine (I'll try to upload it on an archive soon, it will be completely free! Pls tell me in advance if you'd like to reproduce and distribute it irl since I dont want to get sued </3)
btw the tagline "be seen, make a zine" was taken from brattyxbre on YouTube. I would gladly recommend her for zine resources, discussions and zine-related topics, especially if you are a beginner!
BETA MASTER COPY (i.e.. PRINTED TEMPLATE)
Your Beta copy is a version of your zine that is printed on paper with the proper formatting for folding/cutting already. The only difference with this version and omega copy is, well, you DON'T fold or cut this copy.
The primary purpose of a B-Copy is to check:
print quality (text visibility, color vibrance, ink bleeding, etc.)
graphic size and an overview of your zine's general physical appearance.
And the other, marginally vital role of your B-Copy is to serve as:
the physical print that you can use for XEROX (photocopying) or other copying services and tools
scannable output that you can scan/copy for distribution, especially if the person who wants your zine would like to assemble it themselves, if you do not have a final version of your zine on hand to share, or you yourself do not have your A-Copy for reproduction.
A printed copy that you can catalogue or archive, especially if you are the sort of person who retires zines, or are just deeply sentimental (like me, lol!).
Down below is the B-Copy of my example zine. Ignore the fact that this is literally my omega copy that I just dismantled because I don't have my Beta in hand lol. But approximately this is how it looks like.
I personally store B-copies (alongside O-copies) inside a dedicated clearbook or binder to safeguard against weathering or chemical ink deterioration, alongside some information and stuff about the zine itself. This is useful especially if you want to showcase zines and zine content to others, apart from safekeeping purposes.
I might make another longform infodump about digital and physical zine storage and archiving processes (because as an aspiring librarian I feel it is my duty to rant about that) but that will be for another time.
OMEGA MASTER COPY (i.e., FINAL EXAMPLE PRINT)
Okay this is kind-of self explanatory, but I will elaborate regardless.
If you are the sort of person who handcrafts zines (aka make, draw, write or assemble them traditionally) you likely know what the O-Copy is, because your original finished zine is what I am referring to as the Omega copy. That is, the ACTUAL "Master Copy" itself.
Omega Master Copy is what most zinesters and zine creators refer to as just the master copy. But seeing from this post, you KNOW I had to make it fancier (read: unnecessarily complicated)
The Omega copy serves as your first official print, and you can use this version to store or show around. The only difference is, if you end up using my organizing format (good luck!), you'll end up using the O-Copy more as a finished product display to show how it looks when finished as an assembled copy, and the B-Copy as the actual thing you use to reproduce or duplicate your zines for distribution.
Here is the example of my O-copy for my example zine. (again you will be able to access this through an archive soon, maybe I will announce it later on or just post about where I store them digitally.)

I used the software development jargon ALPHA, BETA & OMEGA because it kind of fits(?) lol. I am not a coding aficionado but I know loosely enough to utilize the words. But also, live laugh omegaverse. hopefully this helps(?) but also if you reached to this point, hi. I'm glad you indulged in my little rant. EDIT: here's the Internet Archive Link for the specific zine featured in this post! Have fun! Communicate, create, zineovate! Until next time.

um 🥹 . what happens next is that . we . um . we kiss . um and . and when we pull away from each other, i cradle his face in my hands and look at him in distress, “yao, i think we need to kill femi.” he nods slowly, a bit concerned, but still takes me in his organic arm and uses his bionic one to propel us out of his house and to femi's location (yes he breaks the roof in the process) (yes we are still half naked) (yes we time-skipped into your plane of existence). he sets me on my feet and i run and break down the door to your house and hold you at gunpoint. <- gun that shoots out heart-shaped bubbles (they will kill you from how cute they are). you grovel at my feet, tears in your eyes. “coco, it had to be done, there was no other way!” i don’t care anymore. i hold the barrel to your forehead and then... the scene cuts to black before anyone knows what happens next. christopher nolan style ambiguous ending. period exclamation mark justify paragraph save as pdf upload file. aaand submit.

Hi Hi There.
In a distant location, located somewhere in the ocean, there is a laboratory where genetic experiments are carried out, trying to play god, those who work here try to achieve eternal life by combining ancient books of dark magic with the latest applications. current science.
These investigations require human bodies to be carried out and for this they organize hunts of humans who live in towns far from great civilizations so as not to raise suspicions.

What do you mean by digital cleaning?
It's something I've been working on more this year because I had a bit more travel than usual so couldn't do actual home cleaning, but I always take a couple of days in the Month Of Cleaning where I'm focused on my digital life. It's good to make your physical home a comfortable place for yourself, but it's also good to recognize that we have "digital" homes that need attention. And often this is at least less physically demanding, so it's good to keep it in your back pocket for days when you're mentally okay but physically too tired or sore to do more of that kind of work.
In the shortest possible terms, digital cleaning is just making sure that your phone, computer, socials, and other digital "presences" are organized in a way that you find helpful, and that you take a moment to either answer those messages you've been putting off or give yourself amnesty on doing so.
This tends to make a lot of people extremely anxious in a way ordinary physical space cleaning doesn't, so I'm going to put the rest of it behind a cut...
So when I say digital cleaning, I refer to stuff like going through my likes on Tumblr and clearing them out, going through my drafts and turning them into queued posts, answering my asks. I spend time in my email inboxes, either responding to messages or removing them. I am not an "inbox zero" kind of guy, but I like to keep the read-but-not-answered messages to a minimum, and towards the end of the year that usually means a clear-out and amnesty. I clean my Google Drive -- delete old files I uploaded for others, move documents I'm no longer using into an archive, move documents I want to work on into a central work folder. I go through my catch-all folder on my hard drive and organize it; I sort through the year's photos and organize those, partly to archive them and partly because I make a scrapbook from them each year. I don't usually have a ton of tabs open but often have more than I'd like, so I go through them all and either read, bookmark, or get rid of them.
I look in my phone's file tree to make sure I delete files I don't need (mostly menu downloads, Restaurants Stop Making Your Menus PDFs Challenge 2K24) and I sometimes go through each app on my phone, make sure I still use it, and make sure it's set how I want it. If this sounds like a nightmare, bear in mind that I very rarely put apps on my phone to start with -- I think my mother has more apps open at any given time than I have apps on my phone ever.
Everywhere I clean, I look for files named things like "notes" or "deal with" or "random" and move them all into one place so that whatever is in them, I can sort through it and make sure it goes somewhere permanent. Logins go in the login/password spreadsheet I keep, addresses go into my contacts, story notes go into a "fiction scraps" file, random thoughts either get moved into a journal file or put into drafts to become Tumblr posts, etc.
If this sounds like I might have some kind of compulsion disorder, I get that; when I explain my digital hygiene systems a lot of people look at me like I'm spouting a mad but harmless conspiracy theory. But it's something I used to have to do periodically even before I created National Clean Your Home Month, because otherwise I could never find anything, and everything was just...harder. As I once told a boss who admired my organizational skills, "It was this or endless chaos."
Putting addresses into my contacts list means I always know that the addresses I have for my friends are up to date. Putting logins into a spreadsheet means that five minutes spent now will not result in five weeks of procrastination later because I can't find the login and can't do anything else until I do that. Going through my email and archiving old conversations means not only can I find them easily when needed, I don't have to look at them the rest of the time. Sometimes I even go through my various wish lists and remove old/purchased items, or clear out all my "save for later" carts.
There's no doubt this is stressful, but like every part of NaClYoHo, it's broken down into smaller tasks; I don't have to look at my computer and organize everything on it all in one day. I can answer a few asks, then sort photos (something I find very soothing up until the moment I Don't), then read and delete some emails, then I'm done for the day. I can spread "answer or file all your work emails" out over a couple of days. I can maybe empty out my Likes but just turn the ones I actually want to reblog into drafts for now and deal with them later in the "drafts" phase of cleaning. And if I don't manage to empty out my inboxes, at least they're emptier than they were.
I'm struggling this morning with having put a bunch of physical cleaning on the to-do list but not feeling physically up for it, so I did what I felt capable of doing (measuring cabinets for new shelf liners mainly) and later today I might sit down and start building this year's photobook. Or not -- I have to code Radio Free Monday, sort out a prescription and possibly go pick it up, plus a very full day of work and a couple of afternoon appointments I can't shirk, so today may simply be a "get through the day" kind of day. That's okay too; some days the spirit is willing but the schedule is full.
