Though British farming is arguably at the most precarious point in its long history – thanks to changes caused by Brexit and food industry subsidies, lack of clear food production policies and increased concern over environmental issues – more women than ever are choosing a career in agriculture and, more importantly, moving into leadership roles.
Back in the 1970s, Holly Collins was studying for her A-levels in Sussex. While her friends sent off their university applications, she wrote to the Royal Agricultural College asking for an entry form, hoping to follow her dream of becoming a farmer.
“They wrote back with the following answer: ‘Dear Miss Collins, we do not admit women.’”
Undeterred, she worked on a farm the following summer: “A lot of the tasks then were manual labour, so I’d just turn up at the farm gate and ask for a job. I was paid much less than the male students I worked with because I was female. The farmer’s father told him that, because I was the hardest worker, he should pay me the same as them – but he didn’t.”
Things, says the 64-year-old who now has her own upland farm, Hollin Bank, at the head of Coniston Water in the Lake District, have improved a lot for women in agriculture since then.
Though British farming is arguably at the most precarious point in its long history – thanks to changes caused by Brexit and food industry subsidies, lack of clear food production policies and increased concern over environmental issues – more women than ever are choosing a career in agriculture and, more importantly, moving into leadership roles.
Minette Batters, the first ever female president of the National Farmers’ Union of England and Wales (NFU), may have stepped down this spring after six years in office, but women are still well represented in the union, with Rachel Hallos, a South Pennines farmer, installed as NFU vice-president and Abi Reader as deputy president for NFU Cymru. The Great Yorkshire Show has just got its first female show director in its 186-year history – dairy farmer Rachel Coates takes over after this year’s show in July. In the field of specialist skills, the UK has also just appointed its first female wool grader. Amy-Jo Barton, 22, is based at British Wool (formerly the British Wool Marketing Board) in Bradford where she sorts wool by hand based on style and characteristics; a job she finds “very therapeutic”.
While women comprised 17% of farmers in 2019, data from the Office for National Statistics for 2023 shows that of the 104,700 registered farmers, 22% are female. In the broader category of managers in agricultural services, women make up 32% of the workforce. According to recent figures from the Higher Education Statistics Agency, 64% of agricultural students are women. For an industry that historically relies on father-to-son succession to pass on land and which used to exclude women from many of its educational establishments, farming has come a long way.
Coates, incoming director of the Great Yorkshire Show, says: “Women have always been the backbone of a farm. Now they’re no longer in the kitchen tied to the Aga, they’re at the forefront of the industry. It’s good to see this take-up of leadership roles.”
Louisa Dines, principal lecturer in agronomy at Harper Adams University in Shropshire, thinks farming has lagged behind in terms of gender diversity but is finally catching up with other industries.
“Farmers’ wives and daughters were always important – farms are typically family businesses and intertwined with home life – but women used to operate below the radar,” she says. “Historically local meetings were in the pub or village hall. Wives often weren’t invited or had to look after the children. Even if they did go, it can be intimidating walking into a room full of men, but new communication platforms – such as social media and video conferencing – have made it easier for women to take part.”
There are more than 14,000 members of the Facebook group Ladies Who Lamb and farmers such as the Yorkshire Shepherdess and the Red Shepherdess have huge followings on TikTok and Instagram. Dines says she recently attended an agritech conference to promote links between women in farming in Poland, Ukraine and England. Previously these women had worked in isolation but not had a sense of community. “It was so interesting to see how far we’ve come.”
Traditions need to change more, though. The average age of a British farmer is 59 and the business is still typically passed down the male side of the family. A 2022 survey in Northern Ireland found that inheritance was the second biggest challenge faced by women in farming. The biggest was male dominance.
Molly Lewis, whose family have farmed sheep on 250 acres of pasture in Powys, Wales, for 350 years, says this attitude is starting to shift. The 20-year-old plans to take over when her father and his brother retire. She splits her time between working in the family business and the local agricultural market.
“In the past, sometimes men felt pressured to take on the farm even if their heart wasn’t in it, but now it goes to whoever is interested. I’ve noticed a lot more women happily getting involved. It feels natural, especially here. We have an open hill farm in the Elan Valley, and do a lot of community work with all our neighbours. You see women and girls on the hills doing the same jobs as the men and no one thinks anything of it.”
Lewis also talks of the community’s fury at the Welsh government’s sustainable farming scheme – the post-Brexit plan for funding the industry which includes ensuring 10% of farmland is under tree cover.
Collins’s farm has low densities of mixed livestock and a nice sideline in educational courses teaching traditional farming skills such as dry stone walling and coppicing. It’s currently host to two masters students researching finance and birdlife. She brought in two women – Megan Jones and Katherine Andrews – to manage Hollin Bank alongside her.
She says she has had difficulties with “a lack of respect” from male farmers. “But I am learning at a late age and from the wonderful young women who work with me that you don’t have to instil fear in others to succeed in this very male world. We try to be warm and encouraging of anyone who is interested. I’m not sure this is a ‘female’ attitude to farming but I suspect it might be.”
None of the three at Hollin Bank grew up in agricultural families, bucking the tradition of succession. While Collins had a “striking ambition” to farm her whole life, her colleagues originally worked in conservation and nature restoration.
“As 70% of the UK is farmland, I wanted to understand how conservation and agriculture intertwine,” says Andrews. “I also believe we need to localise the food economy to save food miles, create jobs and deepen our connection to the land.”
If farming is in crisis it may be this new generation who look to change the status quo who will be able to find a resolution. All of them seem keen to evolve. Coates’s big ambition for the Yorkshire Agricultural Society is to engage young people because “we need to make farming relevant – there are going to be changes in agriculture over the next few years and we need to adapt”.
Dines points to the increased importance of marketing and communication – from farm shops and crafts to environmentally friendly farming practice – “all the public-facing activities at which women excel”.
Jones, who worked in restoration before joining Hollin Bank two years ago, also points to the need for communication within the indusry as well as with the public.
“We need to strengthen food systems that value farmers’ extensive knowledge of the landscapes they work in,” she says. “I think we need to listen to farmers and figure out what works financially and ecologically. How can we build resilient ecosystems?”
The reason so many more women have moved into farming is perhaps best explained when Jones talks about what she enjoys most about her work.
“My favourite thing about working on a farm is the daily and seasonal rhythms. Each day you adapt and respond to the environment and the animals. Days when we move the sheep or cows are always good days, walking with them is like a moving meditation. For someone who spent very little time doing practical work growing up, I find working with my hands very rewarding and empowering – especially as a woman.”

I have ended up writing more about Eregion again: specifically its fall, in Speak Friend and Enter. And I have another Second Age Eregion work slowly underway. To help with all of this, I made a map of Eregion, aiming for the period around 1600 when the Ring was forged.
Here's the thinking behind it:
Eregion is largely a wooded landscape. Some of the trees have been felled to build the city of Ost-in-Edhil, and to provide fuel, but I think the woods would be preserved. Celeborn and his people came with Galadriel to establish Eregion, bringing Doriathrin forest agriculture skills with them.
Perhaps Galadriel has even tried planting mallorn trees here, though they did not take as well as they did in Lorien later, and vanished when there were no longer Elves in Eregion to look after them. The woods would be a source of materials, fuel, and bark, but also a place where the Elves would hunt, particularly deer.
At the end of the Third Age, when the Fellowship walked through Eregion, they noticed ancient remains, paved roads and worked stones. I am inclined to think some of these may have been Numenorean remnants from the early Third Age, rather than remains of Eregion, simply because of the 4760 years between the Fall of Eregion and the War of the Ring. Eregion/Hollin doesn't seem to be mentioned as being part of Arnor, but it is quite close to the Numenorean settlement of Tharbad. (On the other hand, Eregion did specialise in the technologies of preservation, if the Rings are anything to go by. Still, a nearly 5000 year old road still recognisable as such tests my imagination somewhat.) I am not sure if Elvish Eregion would have had the wide paved roads mentioned in Lord of the Rings. I think the roads I have marked on the map above were probably green roads, used for walking routes, occasional horse riders, and perhaps livestock droving, and that the paved roads may have come later.
Of course, the paved leading to Khazad-dûm with its wide climbing loops as described in LOTR, may have been a dwarf-road. The creation of loops to reduce the climb suggests that perhaps it was designed for use by heavy carts. There is no wide lake before the Doors, of course. That was created by damming the Gatestream, Sirannon, some time in the late Third Age.
At any rate. Tharbad does exist in 1600SA, but it's fairly new, and primarily a fort defending Numenorean timber extraction operations: there's no bridge yet, and the bogs and marshes along the line of the Swanfleet river are wide and shallow, with several small islands.
This land will all be drained later, either by Numenor, or perhaps by the new powers of Arnor and Gondor, building the road through Tharbad to connect Northkingdom and Southkingdom. But not yet. The forests that used to lie around the river Gwathlo have mostly been felled by Numenor, but there are some left, and most of those will be burned during Sauron's campaign.
I've given Celeborn a house outside Ost-in-Edhil. Given his well-documented distrust of Dwarves, I feel that he probably wouldn't be very comfortable in the city with the greatest friendship ever known between Dwarves and Elves. Also, during the fall of Eregion, Celeborn was present and joined Elrond's rescue force that was swept away into the north, to found Rivendell, and that would be more likely if Celeborn's usual haunts were at the northern end of Eregion. I've drawn his house with two long wings and a tower, and I'm inclined to think that the tower was Galadriel's idea, and was made of stone, but the wings were made of carven wood. There are other settlements scattered across northern Eregion through the woods, but no cities of any size: these are homes for Elves to use particularly in winter.
When the Fellowship stopped on the road from the Redhorn Gate, they stopped at a hill topped by a few trees, and ringed with large rocks. I've decided this was probably a way-meet, where two paths originally passed, and the trees are distant descendents of those planted by the Elves. The rocks might be remnants of late fortifications from the siege, perhaps linked to real-world myths about crossroads and waymeets.
The wide shallow bird-haunted Swanfleet is probably a useful food source for Tharbad, as well as the elves of southern Eregion and the Men of the great woods of Eriador. All of them hunt in the marshes for birds and eggs.
I think perhaps the Numenoreans of Tharbad (they all call themselves Numenorean, though even at this early date, some of them have never seen Numenor) mostly hunt on land, in the reedbeds. They are more comfortable with deep water ships than small boats.
The Elves of Eregion make long shallow punts that are driven with paddles or long poles, which allows them to hunt birds in season on the water with bows or falcons.
The marshes are also grazing land for cattle, the herds of the original inhabitants of the land along the Gwathlo river. They have been here for a very long time, long before Eregion was established, trading cheese, milk and leather with the dwarves of Khazad-dûm in return for metal: mostly in the form of knives, pots, pans and needles.

"Skids" O'Toole AI Fiction
Skids O'Toole had always been a good kid. Growing up in the small town of Arkham, he had always followed the rules and worked hard to help his struggling family make ends meet. But when his mother fell ill, Skids found himself in a difficult position. The medical bills were piling up and he had no way to pay for the operation she desperately needed.
Desperate and with no other options, Skids turned to a life of crime. It was never something he had wanted to do, but he felt like he had no choice. He knew it was wrong, but the thought of losing his mother was too much to bear.
Unfortunately, Skids's plan didn't go as smoothly as he had hoped. He was caught by the police and sentenced to five years in prison. It was a harsh punishment, but Skids knew he deserved it. He just hoped that he would be able to make it out in time to see his mother again.
But fate had other plans. Skids's mother passed away during the second year of his sentence, and he was left alone in the world. It was a tough time for Skids, and he often found himself lost in thoughts of what could have been.
One night, while lying in his cell, Skids was startled awake by the sound of his cellmate, Brad Hollins, ranting and raving about something called the "Old Ones." Skids had no idea what Brad was talking about, but he listened politely as his cellmate told him about strange adventures he had experienced while dreaming.
Skids didn't think much of it at the time, but the next night, he woke up to find Brad's bed on fire. Skids watched in shock as his cellmate burst into flames and died right before his eyes.
When Skids was finally released from prison, he returned to Arkham with a single goal in mind: to find out what had happened to Brad and get to the bottom of this mysterious "Old Ones" business. He knew it wouldn't be easy, but he was determined to get to the truth, no matter what the cost.

@operative-j ((from here))
James emerged to the waiting room where Dib had been instructed to stay a little over an hour later, still in his scrubs but washed up otherwise. He’d only arrived for a temporary stay on the Massive the night before, just in time apparently. “Ah, Dib, you’re here. I’m sorry we couldn’t talk before the surgery, I was already scrubbing in when I sent it.” There hadn’t been much time to waste. “They’re both in stable condition, though I don’t know yet how long it will be before Charlie wakes up.”
Dib has been waiting the whole hour in the waiting room with nothing but his outfit to keep his hands busy and murmuring recited poetry in alien languages to occupy his mind. His attention immediately and fully shifts to James when James emerges.
“No problem, I would rather they get care sooner than later.” He takes the apology easily, understanding how much time can be of the essence in situations like these. After having a smoother time with the first, he’d hoped... Well, it is what it is now.
The tension almost entirely falls away from him when he hears Birb and Hollin are both stable. “Can I- When can I see them?” Even if Birb isn’t awake, he wants to see them, to wait by their side, to see their child. To know they are both real and tangible and alive, more than words can say.

A Permanent Reminder
MAJOR DGS 1 CASE 5 SPOILERS
Whumptober 2021 - Day 13
Herlock Sholmes reflects on his scars.
Day 13: “That’s Gonna Leave A Mark” Prompt: Burns Fandom: The Great Ace Attorney Words: 446 TW: gunshot wound, hospital, burns, scars, trauma
A Permanent Reminder
“I’m off to the market, Hurley!”
Herlock Sholmes smiled at the sound of Iris’s enthusiastic voice calling from the doorway.
“Beware Hollins Road as always, my dear!” He called back. Although he knew that she probably knew better than he did which routes to take, it had become a little tradition of theirs for him to warn her off a random street each time she left. It was a rather silly tradition, but it became a part of their routine nonetheless.
He heard her giggle.
“But that’s the safest one! You’re slipping, Hurley.”
The door clicked, and for a few moments Herlock’s smile stayed on his face. Iris truly was the light of his life.
A few moments later, his smile began to slip.
He walked from his bed over to his standing mirror; a gift from one of his wealthier clients. He could never have been able to afford such an extravagant piece of furniture himself.
Closing his eyes, he let out a hiss of pain as he slowly lifted up his shirt.
Eyes squeezed shut, he kept them that way for a few more tense seconds before opening them again.
He still hadn’t gotten used to the size of the thing.
It was a massive red blotch just above his right hip. If one observed from a distance, it would look much more like splashes of paint than painful scar tissue.
He didn’t dare touch it. He swore he could still feel his flesh sizzle from the heat when he did.
A whole month had passed since the incident at Windibank’s. It felt longer.
(He would never be able to rid himself of the nightmares of that night spent in hospital. Awake, in agony, with supposed miraculous anaesthetic taking no effect.)
(At first, the nurses had to keep him held down.)
(Then, once all his energy was spent, he lay motionless on the operating table. The doctors tried to think of an alternative form of anaesthesia as the chemical residue continued to burn deeper and deeper into his body. The skin had long since melted away, and blood continued to ooze out of the long gunshot wound.)
(And it hurt.)
He lowered his shirt. That was enough sulking for one day.
It would heal further with time, Herlock knew, but for the time being it was an ugly thing. And the scar would never fade, he knew that for certain. It was far too deep for that.
Maybe it was time he finally showed Iris. She asked to see his injuries on a regular basis, and he always forbade her. She shouldn’t have to see that.
Or was he just ashamed?
...Maybe next month.
Thanks for reading!

Clipped Wings
“I’m afraid that I can’t keep up.”
Kel’shara pulled himself up from his bunk, his limbs and body were aching, everything felt heavy just moving at this point was starting to get difficult. They’d only been deployed for just under a week, but already the strain was starting to affect him, flying at high altitudes to act as a scout for the cohort was starving his body oxygen for extended periods of time. His lips were dry and his skin pale. ‘Take it slow’ that’s what he’d promised Raiyen to do. So slowly he strapped on his armour, wincing as the straps dug into his skin, thankfully his mask would hide his sluggish look from his comrades.
Dressed fully in his blues Kel’shara stepped out of the tent glancing around the slowly darkening wood. The crackle of the fire that the Legion had built was starting to become familiar and a thin smile crept onto his lips. The topic of conversation today? Codenames. The older Legionaries in the unit had begun to tease the new Aspirants about codenames, something the Legion didn’t really use unless doing covert operations. They speculated on the codenames of the new aspirants at their expense. Before long the air was filled with small chuckles and awkward grins. Orders hadn’t arrived yet, so the Legion used their downtime to simply relax.
The gentle calm of the night was broken as Hollins spotted smoke on the horizon sounding the alarm the Legion began to switch on, Corporal Longmane begun to bark out orders. Armour was tossed on, weapons loaded and horses saddled. Kel’shara dashed for his tent tying himself into his flying harness, his fingers slightly numb he struggled but with practice he could do this even in the dark. Feeling the leather grip into his skin tight was painful but familiar. Stepping outside he’d raise his arm to the sky before letting out a loud whistle, Felo’sin his dragonhawk answered the call coming to a dangerously close halt in front of him. Grabbing hold of Felo’sin’s neck Kel would pull himself onto his companion clipping into his harness and laying flat on it’s back. He’d turn to look to his Corporal.
“Corporal, permission to scout ahead?”
“Yes, but remain -low-, Dawnsong.”
Kel’shara glanced around for a moment a scowl forming on his face as he could see that Raiyen was coming to either stop him or to fly with him. At that moment he hated that, he hated that he wasn’t trusted to go alone by his comrade. So in a moment of stupidity and pride he took off ahead alone.
He began to fly fast and low as he was ordered, his mask protecting his skin from the blistering winter air of the Hinterlands. His purple eyes flicked over the ground as he moved looking for signs of conflict. It wasn’t until he reached the Aerie Peak that he found his foe, the Forsaken they had been raiding had reached out for vengeance. Attacking the Aerie Peak. They had begun to try and set fire to the dwarven bunkers, and dead gryphons littered the ground. Out of instinct Kel’shara reached back, forcing the latch on his saddlebag closed, locking Eldrin inside.
“Lets report back.”
Leaning with his body the straps creaked and pulled against his body, causing him to wince in pain once again. He took the turn slow to ease the pain on his body, the fatigue and lack of oxygen making him sluggish in the air. He didn’t even think to use his buzzbox. A sudden sharp pain ripped through his thigh and Felo’sin screamed in pain. Fire erupting from the Dragohawk’s mouth as it blasted the ground. A warm feeling begun to run over Kel’s right leg, he was laying flat on the back of his hawk so he couldn’t even look back to check on it. Felo’sin was starting to struggle to fly with Kel going limp on his back. Kel’shara did what he could to save his mount.
“Land you bastard! Land!”
Felo’sin obeyed slowly moving Kel’shara down to the ground, halting just at the edge of the forest Kel’shara unclippled himself, falling to the ground with a thud, the arrow that was through his thigh slamming into the ground, the barbed head pressing into his skin. He cried out in pain. Felo’sin kept blasting balls of fire towards the oncoming Forsaken soldiers, he couldn’t hold them back without Kel. A whistle sounded from Kel’s lips, sending Felo’sin skyward. He would die, but he’d save his friend. Slowly pulling the large pistol from his hip he dragged himself to a tree, a trail of dark blood staining the grass as he moved. In the distance yellow eyes stared at him drawing ever closer. Kel pulled back the hammer on his pistol placing it under his chin, he refused to be used against the Legion like the soldiers they had found yesterday.
“Kel! I’m coming back for you! I promise!”
Kel’s buzzbox begun to blurt at him, he silenced it quickly. Lowering the pistol from his own chin tears began to roll down his cheeks as his heart began to race, the Forsaken were on top of him now. He had been abandoned again. Raising his pistol to the first Forsaken he’d take aim only for the gun to be ripped from his hands, he put his hands up. Hands reached down and grabbed him, pulling him along the ground. The arrow ripped at his leg making the hole worse. The two Forsaken soldiers were silent uncaring as they moved.
Before long they reached the dwarven bunkers, a grizzly scene inside. The dwarf defenders had been slaughtered in their beds, throats cut and bodies left hanging from the ceiling a warning to the rest of the Alliance. Kel was tossed below one of these dwarfs, gasping in horror he looked to his captors. One squatted down in front of him his yellow eyes peering through the sack he wore on his head. A wet guttural voice came through the sack, adding more moisture to the damp thing.
“Where are the rest of your cohort?”
“Legonnaire Kel’shara Dawnsong, Seventh Legion.”
Kel lifted his chin, he had been trained to only ever tell his foe that. Now that training was about to be tested. A mail plated fist slammed into the side of his head, causing him to fall to the ground. The three Forsaken gathered begun to beat and kick at Kel’shara. He kept muttering the same thing, his name, rank and regiment. Even as the room became dark and the beating stopped he kept muttering it, trying to stay awake. His eye had become so swollen he could only just see through it. Time passed slowly and outside a battle had begun to rage around the bunker. It felt like hours to Kel but in fact had only been about twenty minutes, he slunk down the wall and closed his eyes.
“K-Kel! Wake up! Come on!”
Kel was shook awake, peering through a single eye Raiyen was standing in front of him, he spoke quickly and as much as Kel wanted to hear it he simply couldn’t follow. His brain was rattled and stunned from the beating, he simply fell forwards into Raiyen’s arms desperately wanting to sleep. He was forced back up against the wall, Raiyen said something slowly and calmly. Kel still couldn’t understand him, and then his shadow moved away Kel was alone again. Fear washed over him his heart began to race, he tried to move forward falling into the hard stone floor, he’d mutter out.
“Don’t leave me…”
Raiyen returned in an instant, throwing Kel over one shoulder. He carried him out of the bunker, through the window. Scaling down the side of the building, he told Legionnaire Crowton his plan to rift Kel out. Meanwhile Kel’shara struggled to stay awake, the blood loss and the beating combined with the altitude sickness had taken their toll. His body was shutting down. All he could remember was the warmth of a large explosion washing over him and the night sky suddenly turning bright for a moment before he was ripped through a void rift.
It was about a day before he woke up, he was in the Quel’dorei lodge. Covered in a blue cloak, one under his head. His wounds had been sealed and the infection dragged from his body, the exhaustion remained. His face still swollen. Slowly he sat up peering around the lodge, across the room Raiyen was asleep on the bench, he shook his head before running his hand back through his own hair. A sigh escaping his lips.
“Idiot…”

What you did not know about carbon accounting: IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report confirmed that global temperatures may rise beyond 1.5˚C, unless there is a serious, collective intent to reduce GHG emissions. Nations and organizations are being called upon to adapt sustainable practices that can positively impact the environment. Carbon accounting in this context will be crucial.
1. What is carbon accounting?
Carbon accounting helps organizations measure their greenhouse gas emissions, which enables them to meet emission goals and gain a better understanding of their impact on the environment. It requires companies to set goals within a framework of three scopes:
Scope 1: Emissions from activities like fuel combustion in factories.
Scope 2: Emissions from purchased energy for heating, cooling, electricity.
Scope 3: Emissions from operations like purchasing goods or transportation. As per GHG Protocol, much of corporate emissions flow from Scope 3 sources, making it a key area of focus for carbon accounting.
2. Why is carbon accounting important?
Beyond estimating emissions, carbon accounting or GHG accounting offers several business benefits –
Cost-saving
Just by measuring their environmental performance, enterprises stand to improve on cost savings. It helps minimize investors’ scrutiny and bring in more resilient investments. Oakdene Hollins for Defra’s research states that the UK saved £18bn on water reduction, £4bn on energy use, and £1bn on water use by just measuring its usage.
Talent recruitment and retention
According to Fast Company, millennials are more sustainable conscious with:
40% willing to take a significant pay cut to work for an environmentally responsible company
70% wish to work at a company with a robust environmental agenda
30% noted that they left a job due to the company’s lack of a sustainability plan
Companies with a robust environmental agenda help attract and retain talent and ensure employees are motivated to be around for the long haul.
Meeting regulatory compliance
Organizations must follow environmental regulations imposed by governments or face penalties in the form of exorbitant fines or negative publicity. Businesses committed to maintaining transparency in their operations and demonstrating it through necessary carbon or GHG reporting have a better chance of gaining faster approvals and certifications that enable faster growth.
Enabling business growth
Professional services firm WYG reported that marketing and sales opportunities motivate enterprises to enhance their carbon accounting. This is because enterprises create market differentiation that helps attract more customers. Even investors demanding detailed environmental information in annual reports are inclined to those companies with detailed carbon accounting reports.
3. What are the corporate carbon accounting challenges?
Enterprises are focusing more on carbon accounting in response to climate change and global warming. This shift is driven by worldwide demand and value creation consideration. However, businesses face roadblocks along the way. We have curated some of the common challenges faced by corporates.
Inconsistent data
Data enables organizations to understand their emissions and curb them, provided there is uniformity in it. This data sits in multiple sources such as processed emissions, purchased electricity and more. Gathering this emission data manually is not only cumbersome, but error prone and lacks standardization. Without a sophisticated reporting solution, companies will not be able to extract, standardize and present the data.
Complicated regulatory frameworks
Reporting standards help increase decision-usefulness of reports. That said, sustainability reporting frameworks are complex given the unique purpose and multiple frameworks that appear confusing and conflicting. Compounding the challenge are varying metrics, definitions, and priorities.
Inaccurate reporting and analysis
Most companies are fairly accurate about emissions they directly produce (Scope 1 of carbon accounting), but accuracy reduces when they account for emissions from supply chain or sold goods (Scope 3 of carbon accounting). This means most carbon reporting goes wrong due to a long list of assumptions. The Weather Channel suggests in the USA, with strong regulations on emission reporting, oil and gas companies tend to underreport their methane emissions. This compounds the issue as we get a false picture of their carbon impact.
4. How can corporate carbon accounting challenges be addressed?
Carbon offsetting
Carbon accounting helps businesses understand their impact on the environment and make informed decisions to reduce it. Enterprises can identify ways to either limit their carbon emissions or offset it with a clearer picture. Carbon offset schemes let organizations invest in critical environmental projects worldwide. This allows companies to balance their carbon footprints.
ESG benchmarking, ratings & risk score
ESG benchmarking helps companies compare their ESG performance against their competitors within an industry. It helps gather crucial insights and improve plans to accomplish net-zero status. ESG ratings help a company measure its exposure to long-term environmental, social, and governance risks that pose a financial risk. The ESG Risk Ratings are categorized across five risk levels: negligible (0-10), low (10-20), medium (20-30), high (30-40), and severe (40+). Together, they reinforce climate change commitments while adhering to industry standards.
Better reporting
To achieve carbon neutral goals, companies must identify relevant frameworks and adhere to them. Two approaches that facilitate businesses to understand their carbon emissions are:
Production-based accounting
Consumption-based accounting
Check flows of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) in specific areas.
Helps assign carbon flows associated with various products or services like electricity, timber, to where people are using these products.
Besides frameworks, businesses need to focus on getting the right reporting solution that helps them represent data accurately and implement faster decisions.
To help enterprises achieve their goal towards carbon neutrality, Eka offers businesses a comprehensive cloud-driven ESG and Sustainability Reporting solution which works with pre-built frameworks like GRI, CDP, SASB, IR, SERC, SDG, BRSR, and others.
