Ooh hard agree on Finnrey. I don’t know what I would have said if you asked me for a ship with the most potential before I saw this but now I just couldn’t pick anything else. Honourable mentions to the pool noodle (I’m right there with you) and jedistormpilot bc even accounting for the shitshow that was reylo there was a bunch of stuff with Poe for both of them that made me go “oooh”

My favourite ship is hanleia hands down but also that’s bias bc I’m pretty sure that it was my first actual ship before I figured out what shipping was. So runner up goes to *checks ao3 history* also codywan as the last ship I read in a star wars fic

Best ship for me is tends to be more of a practical thing and I normally define it by both who I think would stay together long term and be good for each other but also what I think would be quite a healthy relationship (there are a lot of ships that are good for each other but aren’t actually that healthy - to veer into a different fandom, stucky from the mcu is a good example of “would stay together and be good for each other but is actually a deeply unhealthy relationship”. Merthur from the last season or so of bbc Merlin also springs to mind, as does wangxian from mdzs/the untamed with the latter version being healthier than the former but not really by all that much. Also sometimes I feel like Nate/sophie from leverage leans into this a little bit depending on season. Also I’m now done hitting wasps nests with a bat. Moving on).

Best ship for Star Wars is easily kanera from rebels but bail/breha and Owen/beru also place in top three. Honourable mentions go to most iterations of jedistormpilot, the version of the pool noodle that lives in my head, and what canon heavily implies about: baze/chirrut from rogue one (I definitely spelled that wrong); shmi/cliegg (as opposed to at least three different takes I’ve run into about how she’s a slave wife); and jyn/cassian also from rogue one (I’ve seen too many fics with them being all codependent and “can’t live without you” for a canon ship that literally sacrificed their lives and any future they could have had for the chance to save the rebellion)

Most compelling ship is probably the majority of variations on the theme of clone/jedi because I normally view those relationships as very queerplatonic with a sliding scale of how romantic it is depending on the ship and also there’s something about the concept of “both these people would definitely sacrifice their lives for the other if they thought it was necessary but if it comes to a choice between duty and the other then they’ll always pick duty first even if it means losing each other because that’s who they are and what they love about each other” with special mention given to codywan, blyla (my beloved! which actually I’m going to add to my list of favourite Star Wars ships), and rebels era rexsoka (in the world that exists in my head where everything written about her after Ahsoka confronts Vader on malachor doesn’t exist which is basically tcw s7 and anything set after 2(?) bby bc literally everything about her would be so much better if she’d died there as that episode strongly implied until felony used time travel to retcon it!)

I also think cal/merrin in Jedi survivor is very compelling, along with bail/breha/obi-wan and Owen/beru/obi-wan. Both of the latter of which are pretty small but very fascinating in how you can spin the concept and the different kinds of trust and compromise that they would have to make if they wanted to work.

Honourable mentions go to quinlan/ventress and Ahsoka/ventress both of which I think are fun and interesting but don’t actually like that much in non-character study fics bc it too often leads to Jedi-bashing/anti-jedi sentiment. Also obitine (I know you don’t like this one) but specifically Padawan!obi-wan/not-yet-duchess!Satine bc I really find it interesting how these two people with similar values and ideals but fundamentally different cultures and ways of life managed to fall in love with each other to the point that they still think of each other fondly and have somewhat complicated emotions about each other and their positions even twenty years later.

You’ve talked a little about ships before but mainly in the context of how that is connected with the/a specific Jedi. And also a bit about ships you don’t like

But in Star Wars as a whole what’s your favourite ship, which one do you think is the best, and which one do you think is the most compelling?

(I know that the answer to all three could be the same but for me personally there’s often little overlap in these things so ymmv)

I'll assume that canon and fanon are both options here.

"My Favorite" is the easiest to answer, so I'll start there. I've made an entire fic rec list for it and made no secret of the fact that I really like Codywan. Star Wars wasn't a fandom I really did any shipping in when I first was introduced to it as a kid. It wasn't until I decided to get back into Star Wars a little as an adult that I was even introduced to the IDEA of Codywan as a ship, but once I discovered it, it had me absolutely hooked. I will admit that I have a hard time with reading Codywan fics these days and interacting with other Codywan shippers because I often end up feeling like my interpretation of the characters is very different than the norm and what I want from the relationship - the thing that makes it compelling to me - isn't the same as most other people who enjoy the ship. But it was my first Star Wars ship and I still really enjoy the version of Codywan that exists in my head, so it will continue to claim the title of favorite.

For "Most Compelling" and "The Best" I'm actually going to exclusively define those as being IN CANON because anything in fanon can be compelling depending on how well someone writes it. I could obviously put Codywan down for both of these categories, but it would specifically be MY version of Codywan, the version that only really exists in my own head, and not necessarily the more popular version of them in the fandom.

I'm going to give "The Best" and "Most Compelling" to Jyn and Cassian from Rogue One. I will readily admit that, as someone who identifies as aroace, the fact that Jyn and Cassian never do or say anything explicitly romantic to each other is a major part of the reason I like them. I also personally believe it's the reason they're so compelling. Without being able to use any of the usual narrative shortcuts that romance tends to provide, Jyn and Cassian's dynamic relies on actually showing the two of them connecting with each other on a deeper level. I love how so much of their relationship with each other exists only in their eyes, in the way that they look at each other (whether the other person is looking back or not). I love the way their relationship comes through in-between the lines rather than stated out loud. I love the subtlety that exists for Jyn and Cassian in a way it doesn't for pretty much any other more "canon" ship.

I have also said before (though I'm not entirely certain I did it on this blog or not) that I really like angst, usually in the form of hurt/comfort but a good tragedy sometimes just hits the spot. Jyn and Cassian living in a "maybe," existing in a perpetual "what could have been," is so fucking sweet to me. That shit hurts JUST RIGHT. I love the idea that these two people meant everything to each other but only in the last few days before they died and they never even got to explore what exactly that could be. Their love is shown in how they impacted each other, the ways their relationship changed each other, because that's all they ever had time for. I fucking love that shit. The ambiguity of Jyn and Cassian's relationship is what makes it the most compelling to me and I think that the fact that they never get together forced the writers to show us they loved each other in far more interesting and nuanced ways than usually exist for couples that more explicitly get together on screen.

And finally, my choice for "Most Potential" is FinnRey. I really liked Finn and Rey's dynamic in TFA, I liked the way they both learned to rely on each other when they'd never had anyone to rely on before, the way they were able to escape their respective prisons and take their first steps into a larger world together. I liked the theme of coming back for each other no matter what, of reaching out for each other so they couldn't be separated, and the idea of shared fate where they would become the hero of the story TOGETHER. Obviously we all know how that dynamic got sidelined and ignored after TFA, but both characters are still alive and definitely have more story to tell, so the potential remains. Whether that potential ever actually goes anywhere, even if it's just in things like novels and comics, is still super up in the air. But I think these two could have an incredible dynamic if anyone was willing to give them the time of day.

Avatar: The Last Airbender episode 2x01 .*:･ﾟ★

Aang has a scary dream about himself being scary. The Avatar state is indeed a weird thing. The kid also technically just slaughtered an army. It must weight a bit on the conscience of a kid that doesn’t even eat meat.

They’re headed to Omashu, where Aang is supposed to train in earthbending with King Bumi.

As usual, Uncle Iroh is a mood.

Uncle Iroh is trying to indirectly convince Zuko to relax (and also informs us they’ve spent a few very shitty weeks, so at this point Zuko should be, according to very scientific and accurate calculations, at Bad Day #3mil), but it’s the anniversary of when he was banished. “I want my father not to think I’m worthless” nooo bby we’ll just punch him in his stupid face and everything will be fine.

The pinkish and grayish visual of the scene - the cherry blossoms, the pink and gray clothes they’re wearing, with little, non-bright red - immediately signals us that they’re more and more distant from the Fire Nation. They’re no longer clad in Fire Nations reds, and the place they’re staying at is a much lighter, less violent color.

“Why would he banish you if he didn’t care ......uh that came out wrong didn’t it” :’)

Azula’s ship is unnecessarily fancy. Girl, chill.

They receive a very warm welcome at the earth kingdom city that is their first stop, but the general is more in a hurry than the gang’s plan allows. Understandably, he wants to end the daily loss of soldiers as soon as possible. You can’t blame him. Aang also knows that.

Oooh Azula can produce lightning. Insert Palpatine joke here. I hope the Fire Lord also has that power, because that would be funny, given his voice actor and all...

Jokes aside, that’s quite terrifying and makes me think that Katara is absolutely not an option to fight her. I suppose the lightning thingie works as electricity and water is not a good way to counteract it.

Ooh. Aang accepts the general’s plan to go straight against the Fire Lord. Well, there’s two seasons to go so it’s not going to go like that.

They try caffeine first. Mmm. No. Also no. Also no.

What the fuck, Azula, that’s so cruel. They sure know how to write a terrible person, uh. I mean, she’d had like five minutes of screentime and she is established as someone whose guts we hate. And again, it’s interesting that the villains have a personal relationship with Zuko (and increasingly so). The story basically as a dual protagonist, one of which is antagonistic to the other but despite that he’s the good guy we root for against the actual villain. It’s a very clever narrative structure because you don’t often find something like that. Obviously, the two things we want - Aang to succeed and Zuko to be happy - are not contradictory, and we can tell there’s only one way to have the latter also happen.

Anyway Lady Palpatine’s trick even creates conflict between Zuko and Uncle Iroh, but Zuko is so happy when his uncle follows him :’) Uncle Iroh can tell that the best course of action is to be there and protect him, which he will need.

Aang admits he can only achieve the Avatar state when he’s in genuine danger... which, well. What exactly where you expecting, sweetheart.

It’s a good thing Aang is 12 because you don’t get more agile than that after that age.

I suppose this is another episode structured on a parallel between Aang and Zuko - Aang gets tricked into going into the Avatar state through Katara being supposedly in danger, which is what he cares about the most; Zuko gets tricked into getting into a trap through the fake promise of home and being back together with his family again, which is what he cares about the most. Neither is something we didn’t know, but the season premiere firmly re-establishes their character motivations and priorities.

Azula is terrifying although I think that Zuko might not be in fact in his best shape right now. He’s been through a bit of a lot.

Aang learns that the Avatar state isn’t something to be taken lightly, and the earth kingdom soldiers also do.

Zuko and Iroh now know their connection to their nation has been severed, and cut their hair. The Fire Nation doesn’t want them, and this is a moment of mourning of their identities. They need to become someone else, and say goodbye to who they were before and what they believed in.

- Now that I have some idea of the colour schemes, I can identify which opening credits shots are from flashback scenes and which are from Wu Xie era scenes

- And the paintings are far more interesting than whatever might be inside the vase. Although he's moving it around far too easily for the baby corpse to still be in there, I think

- Poor confused Wu Xie. I don't blame him. The stuff in this tomb and its design apparently places it in two different time periods which are like 1000 years apart

- I really like S2 Pangzi. He's got the right blend of competence and humour. Comic relief without being just a caricature like S1 Pangzi 

- And Wu Xie showing off his smarts, which is cute. It's moments like these that reminds me he's got an architecture degree

- I think this is the first time we've heard Wang Zanghai's name in the dramas so far 

- And Xiaoge seems to certainly know the name and not be happy about it

- Oh, this looks like a Xiaoge flashback? 

- More fucking swimming, of course 

- But without a diving suit this time - And that's all it was. So interesting. So groundbreaking. I've never seen anyone swimming through dark murky water in this show before

- This Wu Xie is a much more expressive Wu Xie than S1. So many smiles! 

- And such a brilliant little shit 

- I'm really liking the Wu Xie/Pangzi interactions so far. Well, all of them, but these moments are so good. They're reminding me of the Chongqi interactions

- Oh, more bubbles, I'm sure this will be FINE 

- Oh, it's just the water draining out

- Pangzi complaining he can't see because of the fog, but really, I'd think the darkness would be the bigger problem. 

 - They've only got a couple of torches, and this is a large room and even larger pit that that staircase is going down into

- Wu Xie, what did you expect, asking if he can read something from such a distance? 

- And then looking at Xiaoge to see if it's going to be okay to do this 

- These steps & the twig-things on them are remarkably dry for having been submerged in water only a couple of minutes ago

- OK, now that I'm not distracted by speaking or, like, plot (or pingxie), the bgm is actually drawing my attention and dear god, yes, it really is awful and annoying 

- Hahah, dunking on both Sanshu's and Pangzi's English skills in one go

- This Wu Xie is a lovely chaos gremlin 

- Who hasn't completely lost all sense of caution yet, it seems 

- I mean, Pangzi, I'm not sure you'd be saying those things if you heard the kinds of stories Sanshu was telling bby!Wu Xie in those flashbacks 

- Then again, you probably would

- "Besides, I can't leave Xiaoge" ❤️

 - So Xiaoge probably left those marks 

- This look on Pangzi's face as Wu Xie just throws away all the caution he'd been arguing with Pangzi with to go chasing after Xiaoge XD

- I have to say, S1 was far superior in terms of set lighting. Most of the time it's so hard to make out anything. Like, I know they're meant to be in a tomb, but would it have killed them to add more set lighting so we could actually see what's going on more consistently?

- I do love this Xiaoge's unimpressed looks. 

- Oh, it's the mirror 

- Again, everything down here is so remarkably dry 

 - Dry enough to have got dusty in mere minutes!

- Intense Xiaoge Stares! All the stares, all the time, all at Wu Xie

- Ooh, old diving equipment. Well spotted. 

- That airtank being crushed like that does not seem to be a good sign 

- I'm with Pangzi. What sounds? The bgm was drowning out everything except speech

- Hahahah. Pangzi all like, no, we don't need to go up, it's not that dangerous, you're just scaring yourself. Then one mention of the Drought Demon and he's like y'know, on second thoughts.... 

- Xiaoge does like his disappearing tricks 

- And reappearing ones

- This is a good shot for a vague creepiness factor

- Baby is so worried

- Oooh, time for dramatic music while we look at dramatic skyscapes and seascapes 

- Wait, is all that water running backward? 

- I have no idea how that is meant to symbolise remembering things, but apparently it does 

- And now, a Xiaoge flashback

- The vases in the tomb 20 years ago were amazingly clean. Somehow they went somewhere between 500-1500 years staying as clean as if new, then in 20 years they got covered in waterscum.

- I am impressed at the seals on their equipment, if dude was able to bring a sketchpad along on a dive and have it be perfectly dry when he took it out to draw on. 

- And all those notebooks, too 

- The flashbacks get MUCH better set lighting

- Boys, boys, don't fight over the priceless antique porcelain like that. You're gonna drop it and break it. 

- Hahah, Xiaoge's trying so hard to ignore this girl 

- Even when she does give him something interesting to look at

- Well, that explains why all the vases were over there and in that order 20 years later for Wu Xie to find

- This kind of chatter is exactly the kind of chatter I'd expect on an excursion to look at things, or a group project. A little bit is relevant, most is just random chatter, and some might actually eventually mean something once they talk it out. It's great

- Oh, if only you knew, Wenjin. If only you knew 

- Hahah, Wenjin yelling at everyone and telling them to stay put, while Xiaoge just calmly ignores her while he puts his backpack on and walks off 

- lol, and then he just staaaaares at her until she lets him go

- Ah, she knows Sanshu so well 

- She's trying to be the grownup here 

- Poor Wenjin. She really can't win either was when she was stuck on an expedition with both Sanshu and Xiaoge

- Apparently these guys all managed to make it through the hallway without any of them triggering the traps 

- Well done, kiddos 

- Poor Wenjin playing babysitter to all these kids, though

- At least 20 years ago the stonework stayed wet after the water receding instead of mysteriously drying off 

- Well. Most of it, anyway

That my family, friends and I are healthy! That’s pretty important right now. I did lose someone in my family to corona, but thankfully other people recovered and I’m trialing a new testing scheme at uni so I know I’m negative! 

Frost - anything you're looking forward to?

Is it bad to say the holidays?? 😅I’ve only been back at uni for a week and already I’m so exhausted and want a break haha. Roll on 11th December!! But my mum might be coming to visit me next weekend (corona permitting ofc) so hopefully that too! :)

Novel - favorite book?

GAHH how could you, this is so hard 😂I’m definitely going to cheat and say several haha. For a YA book...would have to be A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab (who I met in 2017!! :D). For a classic I’d say Animal Farm, which sadly is a good representation of the UK government atm -_- (one rule for them, one rule for us). And for historical fiction, I might surprise you and say something which isn’t medieval/early modern but it’s The Book Thief! I’m still mourning what they did to the film haha. 

Oven - what's your favorite holiday thing to bake?

Ooh okay I’m gonna swap out the word ‘bake’ for ‘make’ bc I’m Jewish and at Hanukkah we fry everything (unless you’re a grandma maybe haha). I’d have to say latkes! They’re like potato pancakes, and they’re so so SO good. With apple sauce....yessss. Sufganiyot are also amazing! They’re jam doughnuts, and while I’m rubbish at making them my mum is great haha. I also bake gingerbread cookies with my friends around Christmastime! We have a lot of cookie cutters in woodland animal shapes and they’re super cute haha
