Open Source Textbooks:
That website has free, open source textbooks about science (including bio, chem, physics, anatomy, astronomy, psych and sociology, etc) business/economics, world history, and math. My college bio professor used their textbooks, and I thought they were pretty clear and concise. Most science and business subjects also have a variety of levels of difficulty, so you can get into the nitty gritty details as much as you want to (or not). Most of the textbook links in this post link here, so check out the rest of their library.
Khan Academy:
They have a ton of full courses on every basic school subject with lecture videos, readings, and quizzes at the high school / college intro level. (Plus math from elementary school and science from middle school). They also have coding, financial literacy, and pixar animation.
Crash Course:
Quick video lectures about most school subjects with helpful animations and a few jokes to really stick things in your memory in the shortest time possible. If they talk too fast for you, you can reduce the playback speed on youtube under settings.
Learning to Cook:
The previously mentioned flavor bootcamp also has a website, and a podcast. The bootcamp does seem to be the best place to start, though.
Good Eats:
Good primer on the basic science of cooking. My mom, who left her parents' house not knowing how to cook, swears by this show. She was also an award winning professional baker for many years, so like I'd trust her.

America's Test Kitchen:
Recipes for all sorts of things, with some of the science behind them explained. They do more explanation for their more basic tutorial recipes, but some do get a bit more complicated than I'd recommend to absolute beginners. A lot of their website is for subscribers only, which is why I would focus on their youtube channel. You can check the transcript to put together a written recipe. Their cookbooks are best for intermediate cooks who want to understand the why behind a recipe, as most of their recipes are on the complicated side.
I'd specifically recommend this video about learning to read a recipe, which is an important first step if you want to dive right into cooking dinner tonight.
Haven's Kitchen:
I actually found this group from their cookbook, The Haven's Kitchen Cooking School, which I'd recommend if you have access to it. It has a good structure to it, and explains basic recipes in a way I was confident following. Their website also has a few basic cooking technique videos up for free.
I'd also recommend Baker Bettie's Better Baking Book, because it handles basic techniques and master recipes very clearly. (It doesn't provide resources for gluten free baking, but one book can't do everything well.)
Finally:
Your local library's webpage will probably have a ton of different resources. Mine has a free movie streaming service, a language learning website, a connection to libby (a free online library you can use with your library card), various academic databases, and more.

march update
it’s officially midterms time. i thought i would post an update becuase this semester has took SO much out of me. i finished my internship funded by the national science foundation in january, can’t say i made too many ties there since i hardly saw my superiors. BUT i did get to know the metrology lab pretty well and even got their machine working. going into it i did NOT imagine i could accomplish that but i felt so good getting it working! i even made a little overturn training manual and gave it over to them.
okay so starting this semester i am in my gateway courses. so a bunch of physics courses at one time ugh plus i was taking differential and linear algebra. i got so stressed out with the workload that i had a dream where i crashed into a forest and the airbags went off lol. that same morning i dropped my lab and differential equations. it was just WAYYY too much for me.
i’m still a full time student so it was clear i was doing too much. hmm okay so i’m in my gateway courses so mathematical physics, classical mechanics, and modern physics. i knew i was going to struggle with classical mechanics because kinematics alone was hard for me to grasp and it’s basically dynamics. i didn’t apply as an engineering major literally because i didn’t want to take dynamics LOL i struggled in statics. Of course im taking the same class just named something else and a lot harder T_T. i also wanted to get some undergrad research experience and work in an electronic materials lab but yeah i’m just tooooo busy it was a good idea though lmao.
okay but honestly mechanics is the hardest class for me, modern physics is my most interesting class, and mathematical isn’t too bad even though i suck at math because our teacher grades us mostly on completion and work shown. the hardest thing about this semester is just the schedule itself. so we have to take all three at the same time for some reason or you wouldn’t be able to register for the class ummm overkill much?! and the schedule is from 10am - 7:30 pm ughhhh. I have to take the bus there so add on a couple hours and then i have to walk to class. ohhh i miss the online/hybrid classes so much lol. by the time i’m in my last class i am literally asleep. don’t worry ive started drinking coffee.
looking on the brighter sides of things i’m being a lot more involved in campus and i’m really liking getting to know my classmates! i am so antisocial and awkward so im surprised. i’ve been going to the women in stem meetings, society of astronomy, nsbe coding workshops, ieee circuits workshops, career fairs, and boba socials just for funsies. i realize school isnt all about good grades and killing yourself for that A. i’ve even had more time to spend with my friends (it is so true what they say about making time not having it lol). almost every other weekend we see each other and have little celebrations, watch movies, have study dates, go to the park, get coffee/boba, go shopping etc. and facetiming my friends back in arizona as well! one of my club advisors told me its actually the b and c students that do better in the job market and isnt that freaking crazy! ever since then ive been reminding myself that being perfect and getting a’s isnt always worth it. i have other life to live too and people wont necessarily fault me for that.
okay as for my grades though i have been bombing every single quiz like a 50 or LESS LMAO. that’s with me studying at least a whole day before. however as of now i have passed every exam so far. so my current grades right now are 90% in modern physics, 98% mathematical physics, 100% classical mechanics (but a lot f the grades arent in yet), and a 99% in linear algebra. See and thats me not killing myself this semester so im super happy i decided to not overdo it, it really doesnt make as much as a difference as i thought lmao clearly.
looking forward to spring break! i was in therapy/behavioral health all last year trying to tackle my anxiety and i would say its been helping. its all about making a choice. i’m also in physical therapy now for the next couple of months and then once summer starts i’ll start going back to therapy again. this post might seem positive but this semester i have never felt more unmotivated or stupid. some days i feel like i cant do this and that everyone else around me is so much more capable. but i know as soon as i give into those thoughts that i’ll end up giving up and i don't want to give up. my boyfriend also has been feeling the same way.
i also lost my wallet this week soooo all my documentation and identification is gone ugh. i had a full on breakdown but am getting that figured out. i’m going to an applications of black holes seminar tomorrow and i am super excited about that. took my linear algebra exam today too, (WHY IS THAT CLASS SO HARD BTW). i havent yet applied but theres this summer research opportunity happening at the university of toronto (dunlap institute of physics and astrophysics) and i think im going to apply! i really want to travel this year and experience something new!

I'm sure you have more explanations to this than I have tomatoes, and from inexplicably few sources that produce way more than one expects them to. That knowledge can be similarly plucked, but facts, like tomatoes, only have so many uses.
The way to enlightenment is through intentional persistence.
Since you mentioned failing a lab report, I assume you're a college student-- you can most likely fill a gen ed requirement with a 100-level comp sci class that will explain the terms you were asking about in your original post, as well as the general idea of how we as a species learned to push electrons through silicon to do So Much Fucking Math. A CS major should be able to tell you what class that is, or a professor in the department. Hell, the course catalog might be clear enough to steer you correctly, but in my experience professors are rarely good at communicating to administration.
If your brain is not the type to easily absorb information in a seminar setting, you could try putting out some feelers to find someone whose expertise complements your own. If you play video or board games, there is likely a club on campus that would have the type of person who could answer questions like these. That does of course increase exposure to Gamer Culture™️ and that's... well, I'm sure you know if you're online enough to have a solid tumblr blog. You may also have success with just asking classmates if they know how to computer.
If no classmates are a good fit for the task, or if you're just not a super social person, there is also the way of the search engine. MIT puts a ton of courses online for free (though that is seminar-style), and there are any number of tech folks on YouTube who break these things down into digestible chunks. I haven't watched the Crash Course for comp sci, but the episode titles look like they would peel back a layer of esoterica and reveal the logic that lies beneath.
The point of these paragraphs is that there are ways to learn that fit a wide variety of learners.
If the lab is for an in-major class and not just a gen ed, please, please, *please* try to devote some curiosity to understanding the arcane madness that is the modern computer. A lot of science is done with computers, and the people who write those programs are rarely good at making them accessible.
While you can pretty much get by on people giving you their extra tomatoes, you can increase the bounty in the world by planting a few vines and tending to them. And if your neighbor's garden doesn't grow cucumbers, to extend the metaphor, then you're stuck finding your way to a store that sells them and paying for it.
I hope this post doesn't come off as patronizing... I fully understand how arcane comp sci is (my blog name refers to the fact that I dropped my CS major but somehow ended up working in IT anyway) and while it is somewhat daunting, especially to someone with no foundation, I really do feel like computers are functional magic that scratch the itch I got reading stories about wizards.
All that said, printers are indeed evil. The models that Just Work are several thousand dollars and are prone to feature bloat as well as developmental crunch that means their bugs are often... weird. Think of how buggy modern game releases are and then realize that not only is it hard to patch something that's in firmware, and not only do the people who know how to do that fucking hate printers stereotypically, but it's also more profitable for a company's printers to be just annoying enough that you replace it after a few years.

They still have their original turtle eyes! We just cant see them because the art style lol
They're (canonically?) warm blooded
Reptiles take a lot longer to heal than mammals, which is a trait that carried over after the mutation. When they were little they would get a lot of infections (its hard wrangling 4 children under ten, Splinter had a hard time keeping every single cut clean). They own a lot of bandages (specifically fun cartoon band aids) because they have to wear them for much longer periods.
They! Make! Turtle! Sounds! And they picked up some rat sounds from Splinter! Splinter knows what all the turtle sounds mean, but never makes any himself. The first time April heard the turtle sounds she demanded they teach her. She cant make them exactly so she'll make a similar enough sound and they'll joke that she's just got a thick accent
Like most reptiles they will continue to grow throughout their lives! Thats why future!Leo was so big
They've eaten plenty of questionable things growing up. And still will if bribed with enough money. One of the reasons they love Run of the Mill so much is they serve Yokai food aka food with some gross stuff (ex. that pizza with eyes the twins ate when they took April)
Splinter has no idea how old they actually are. Neither does Draxum he didnt exactly care what day his subjects were hatched he just needed them to be juveniles. They were mutated 13 years ago so in reality they are all (mentally?) 13. Splinter needed to put someone in charge while he was gone and the reasoning was because "he's the oldest" because how do you argue with that? And then eventually the kids asked who the second oldest was and Splinter panicked and just went in height order. He randomly picked birthdays and accidentally made Leo 20 days older than Donnie
Splinter's DNA is the reason they're such good ninjas. Somehow. I dont see how thats genetic but yep thats the reason. They pick up moves really fast, so growing up on Lou Jitsu movies and having easy access to youtube allowed them to learn moves visually. Splinter also gave them all a crash course on fighting before he ever let them start going off on their own
Growing up
Splinter named them after colors! Growing up he had to color code everything to avoid "but its mine" disputes. It took him a while to figure that out so they actually didnt have names for that time.
April was the one who started the twin debate. At the time (she was idk 10?) she didnt understand how two siblings born in the same year could not be twins.
Raph and his duty of older brother is essential for the family, but the most substantial role is held by Donnie. Splinter is the father but Donnie is the true provider. Before Donnie got old enough to play around with fixing things the family lived a very different life. Donnie is the reason they have a tv, working kitchen appliances, clean water despite living in a sewer, electric lighting and heating. He's the only one who regularly brings money in and organizes things like online shipping or grocery delivery (thank you internet!). Donnie looks at something and sees something entirely out of the box, and then makes it a reality. Leo found the area that became the lair, but Donnie is the one who made those concrete tubes a functional home. And he did it all just to see if he could. Splinter didnt think he could do it, but it kept the boys entertained all day so he let them have at it. Splinter feels guilty so much has fallen on Donnie's shoulders over the years, but he is so grateful that Donnie turned out to be so smart
General
All the brothers are really smart, just in different capacities. Donnie prefers engineering and computer science but also picks up other science subjects fast. Leo's is harder to see, it manifests more in quick thinking, puzzles, and people skills. He's also really good at math. Mikey is good at seeing patterns, in both objects and relationships. Raph is in emotional intelligence, particularly internally.
When Cassandra said "my friends call me 'Casey'" she meant that only to Splinter, and the rest still had to earn the right to call her "Casey"
Raph and Casey (Sr) somehow become best friends. No one expected it.
Donnie has scars on his shell, but most of them are from minor everyday things and not true fights. Raph has the most scars due to his tendency to use himself as a shield to protect his brothers
Leo, Donnie, and Mikey all feel like they didnt earn their spot on the team. Leo because he feels he doesnt offer much (canon), Donnie because if he cant make tech he thinks hes useless (canon), and Mikey because he's the youngest and his brothers are therefore forced to include him (headcanon)
At one point Mikey tricked Splinter and Big Mama into going on a date
Draxum and Donnie got stuck in a situation that forced them to bond. They both pretend nothing has changed but it has

At one point the boys all try to get jobs. Raph tries the Hidden City but gets run out by the police again. Mikey somehow talks Sr Hueso into giving him a job. Donnie attempts to work for Big Mama but in disguise. Leo somehow ends up helping Draxum out in the high school kitchen. None of them last the week. Raph doesnt make a day, Mikey gets into a argument with a chef on day four and quits "on principle", Donnie got discovered on day 2 but out of nostalgia's sake (being her exbf's son) Big Mama let him stay on but it got uncomfortable fast so he bailed also on day 4, Leo finds out he's outlasted all his brothers and goes in on day 5 solely to steal some ice cream bars and then told Draxum he quits when he was already on his way out
Theres a running joke that Piebald is always there but the boys keep forgetting about her. They dont know if her and dad are messing with them again or she actually was there and they just dont notice ("i mean... she can turn invisible. She could have been there")
Post-Movie
Casey Jr lives with them! April and Casey Sr are at college and living in dorms. Plus, he's not quite ready for full emersion into a society thats never had the apocalypse
Growing up Leo had become a father figure to Casey Jr, a person who could do no wrong. After the movie that illusion is clearly shattered, but he still looks up to Leo and the others. Leo has now taken a role closer to Big Brother (someone who can be flawed) than Parental Figure. Leo on the other hand has fully embraced being a role model for Casey Jr and has basically become Raph whenever Casey Jr is around
Casey Sr takes her job as Casey Jr's mom very seriously. She's not the same as future!Casey Sr, obviously, but Casey Jr enjoys spending time with her anyways. If anyone asks they say they're cousins and as a inside joke Casey Jr calls her "mom"
Casey Sr drilled proper etiquette into her son. The boys are working hard to break that ("Master Michelangelo-" "woah buddy, you can just call me 'Mikey'. 'Master Michelangelo' is way too long and too many syllables")
Raph's got scars from being krangified (from when it ripped into his body and from when he ripped it out of his body). He's got some vision problems in his right eye now
Donnie's also got scars from being forcefully ripped out of the control console
Casey Jr is a avid pupil of Nap When You Can and falls asleep everywhere. Showing him a movie? Asleep. Dinner's gonna take another 15 minutes? He's already drooling on the couch. Leo's taking to long to get his gear on? Catnap on the kitchen table. As the new baby of the family everyone carries him to bed instead of waking him up
Mikey begins spending more time over at Draxum's now, learning about mystic powers
Leo being forced to leave Raph behind really left its mark on him. Watching Leo sacrifice himself really left its mark on everyone else. Its not surprising to wake up in middle of the night because someone came in to check on you after a nightmare

There is no bigger hobby that I enjoy as I do learning about things. I don't think there is any necessity for me to talk about the importance of education but if you didn't know, staying educated therefore cultured is vital in any level up and hypergamy journey and for yourself. I know the general advice is to stay away from wikipedia but I don’t think that advice stands anymore seeing how far the site has come since it’s early days. I go to wikipedia for pretty much everything and I don’t think I will ever quit. Wikipedia is just an online ecylopedia, it is acessible to everyone with an internet connection. Free education/ more accesible education is one my biggest passions and it is something I 100% stand with and I cannot thank the creators of the site enough for their services. You can literally learn anything and everything on here and you get very detailed, referenced information for comepletly free. Like I said, wikipedia is a great starting point whenever you are learning about something new and sometimes the content can be hard to digest but that just means that is thorough.

God bless the internet man. For all of it’s pitfalls, it has made education extremely acessible to the masses. Youtube is a gold mine for visual leaners and I find that information is more digestable when someone else is telling you it. My personal heros are Indian teachers and professers on the sit who are just magic at what they do and everything they teach gets stuck in my head far quicker.

I read others but this is already too long. Honestly the best way to learn is to just search. It really is easy. If you don't understand something, what I like to do is serach whatever the topic is but for dummies or add for kids at the end.
This next bit is for the anons who I know will come and ask me what to learn, I think that there is this obstentanious need to good at everything and learn about everything ever but that is not true. You are fully allowed to be beginner in a subject, you are allowed to only care about certain topics and you are allowed to drop what you are learning if you have had enough. There is no right and wrong and other people’s ditaction on what you should learn is not worthing listening to. There is no need to be a fully fledged Scholar on any subject matter. I think there is this push to learn about certain things because ‘they are better’ which in turn supposedly makes you better than everyone else. Bullshit and classist. Whilst they are good subjects to learn in their own manner- learn about whatever niche thing you want to learn about. It is more refreshing to listen to someone talking passionately about different types of Amphibians or wallpaper then it is to listen to the same route learnt rejuertated Art History blabber. Any knowledge is good knowledge and education is the one thing that will never fail you.

A/N: noting here that this fic takes place in 2005 when criminal minds starts and spencer is 24
It started out a simple equivocal death investigation. Seven women had been found in their apartments, dead with their wrists slashed. Unfortunately not an unusual occurrence, Detective Conner thought nothing of it. Upon trying to contact the employers of each victim, Conner found they all worked for the same people, and decided to mark them down for further investigation just in case. When the fourth victim was found in her father’s beach house just outside of Virginia, the case became federal and handed to the FBI.
The case, being low priority, was given to Derek Morgan to monitor the progress of.
“You’re completely sure there’s nothing about the bodies that connect these victims?”
“Agent Morgan, if there was anything I would tell you. I think it’s time you tell Detective Conner to rule these deaths a suicide.”
“Alright, will do.” Derek hung up with the coroner. Just then his mobile phone rang with the number of the detective displayed on the top of the screen. Derek sighed.
“Agent Morgan.” He answered.
“Agent, there’s another victim-”
“Conner, listen, they aren’t connected, there is no signature unless you can consider the suicide, I think you oughtta-”
“She was called in by a friend. Not a family member, not an apartment manager, not a coworker, a real friend. Derek, he’s devolving.”
Derek sighed, “Detective, I’ll let you send her body over to the coroner but I doubt there will be anything remarkable.”
There was some mumbling on the other end of the line before Detective Conner gave a response.
“That’s the thing, Agent Morgan, this victim is remarkable. She had piercing holes in her ears just like the others.”
“And how is that remarkable?”
“Her ears weren’t pierced.”
“And you’re sure about that, Detective?”
“Her best friend swears it. Do you think they could be puncture marks?”
“I’m not sure, let me tell Doctor Phyllis.”
Derek set down his mobile phone and dialed the coroner on his office phone.
“Doctor Phyllis?”
“You back again so soon, Agent?”
“Look, we got a new victim, she's got puncture marks on her ears. Not piercings, puncture marks. Can you check the other victims to make sure they’re not puncture marks?”
“Okay, give me a minute.”
Derek heard the sound of doors opening.
“Well, shit, they are puncture marks. On every single ear.”
“Thanks, Doctor Phyllis.”
Derek hung up on the office phone.
“Do I still have you here, Detective?”
“Yep. Were they piercings?”
“Nope. Bring in the girl’s friend and call in the family members of the other victims. We’re gonna need to talk to them.”
Derek hung up the phone and ran up to Hotch’s office.
“Something up, Morgan?” Hotch asked.
“You know that case Detective Conner asked me to look into?”
“The one with the suicides?”
“Yeah, well they might not be suicides. I’m having Conner bring in some people to ask them some questions. You mind if I ask Rossi and Prentiss to help?”
“Of course not, but if we get another case then leave the questioning for Detective Conner, alright?”
“Gotcha, boss.”
Derek gathered Rossi, Prentiss, and Penelope in the break room to discuss the case.
“Babygirl, you want to read out the profiles of our victims?”
“Reluctantly,” Penelope pulled up each of the files onto her laptop. “Danica Wilson, a 45 year old woman, was found by her landlord. She grew up in Victoria, Canada, but when she was 12, her parents got a divorce. Her mother moved her and her three siblings to North Dakota shortly after. All throughout highschool she seemed immensely interested in biology and chemistry. She was really good at it too, she took AP classes and she was a promising student. Unfortunately, her mom didn’t want her to do anything of the sort, and set her up for ballet classes her junior year. To appease her mom she studied the history of dance during college and ended up climbing up from an intern at a dance company all the way to a choreographer. Her love for science was still there the whole way through though, she’s been taking free college courses online for biology for about a year. She was found with her wrists slashed and spread out in a star shape on the middle of her bed. There were no fingerprints anywhere in her home and the slashes appeared to be self inflicted. Her mom died a week before she was found, all of her siblings live in other states, and she didn't have any close friends. She never dated, even though she had perfect brown eyes and blonde hair. According to her siblings she had all of the boys at her school after her. Despite there being no evidence of depression or other mental illness officers deemed her mothers death as a stressor and marked her death a suicide.”
“Then we have Maya Peto, 22 years old, found by her sister.”
“So there’s no age preference?” Rossi asked.
“Precisely,” Penelope continued, “She grew up in Detroit. Her parents raised her in a Christian household and shes been openly gay since she was 18. Her dad died when she was 14, leaving Maya and one sister to be raised by their mother. She did exceptionally well in math, but seemed to have no interest in pursuing it as a career. Instead, she became captain of her dance team in highschool and went to Wirtson’s Dance Academy for college. Her last year there, she was picked by Next Star Theatre Company, the same one as all of the other victims, to be on their ballet team. She was found just like Danica, and would be just like the rest of the victims. Her now ex-girlfriend and her had a kid, his name is Gene, he’s a year old, and Maya had full custody of him because Khloe, the girlfriend, had begun doing drugs about a week after Gene was born. How could lesbians have a child? Khloe was cheating. Maya gained full custody of Gene after a year long legal battle, and she had left him with her sister for a weekend while she baby proofed her house. Unfortunately, when she went to Maya’s apartment to return Gene, she found her dead. It was the anniversary of her father’s death when she was found, so the ever so ignorant officers deemed it another suicide.
“Then we have Annie Carr, 24. A coworker found her. Born here in Virginia, Annie was raised by her dad after her mom died when she was about one. She seemed to have a pretty awesome life. Her dad worked two jobs and she’s never had all that much money, but she was a happy kid. She went to a community college and ended up taking the same internship that Danica Wilson took, but she has stayed in that internship for years, mooching money off of her dad and siblings. Mabel Golden, the coworker that found her, claims that there’s no way Annie could’ve killed herself. She didn’t show any signs of depression or mental illness, though she could be pessimistic at times. Mabel said their boss was threatening to let her go, seeing as she hasn’t improved her work ethic in the last five years. Deemed another suicide.
“The fourth victim was Valentine Orange, 36, found by her father. She grew up in Maryland, started acting and dancing at six, her family was pretty wealthy, and she got accepted into the same dance academy and theatre company as Maya Peto. She also danced on the same ballet team. She told her team leader she was going away for a week to her father’s beach house, and when her father came to get her on the day she was supposed to leave, he found her in the guest bedroom, just like the other victims. The beach house was located in Maryland, and due to Detective Cooper’s hunch, the case got handed to us for an equivocal death investigation.
“Francis Falstaff, our fifth victim, was found by her adoptive mother. She was 22. Both of her parents died in a car crash a month after she was born, so she grew up in a multitude of foster homes. When she was ten her and her sister were adopted by Baron Falstaff and Maggie Falstaff. They seemed to be good parents. They went to all of their school events and paid for both of the girls’ college tuition. Francis was trying to make it into the same theatre company that employed the rest of the victims, specifically to work as a jazz dancer. She seemed to have killed herself, just like the rest of the victims, but her mom insists that she couldn’t have. She had a very promising life ahead of her. When they dissected her room they found an evidence board in the back of her closet. Her sister, Yvette, was stabbed to death a couple years back on the way to a party, and Francis was obsessed with finding the killer. Which is why she didn’t have many friends. When it was all processed, they found that the evidence led to Yvette’s boyfriend at the time. It was assumed that this weighed heavily enough on Francis that she ended up, well you know, on the same day she found out.
“Jane Sweeney, the second to last victim who worked on the Next Star Theatre Company ballet team, was 29. She’s been with the company since she was 20, and unfortunately her private teacher was the one who found her. Her father left when she was young. She liked expressing all of her success, almost narcissistically so. According to some other people on the dance team she was the best dancer and loved flaunting it. She was a kind of queen bee and seemed to value herself more than others most of the time. It just doesn’t make sense for her to kill herself.
“Lillian Bonner was the next victim. She was 54. She taught modern dance at the company. She lived with and was found by her only son, Tyrell, who she had with her husband Ivan. Though they were still legally married, the two were separated. Tyrell, who’s 16, said she was a fantastic mom. She always made sure he was fed and had someone to talk to. He told her practically everything about his life and he is having a really difficult time without her. He doesn’t believe that she would do that to herself.
“Our last victim was Camille Price. She was 25. Her best friend, Spencer Reid, who was on the same ballet team, found her. She was the only one who really had people around her. She grew up in Virginia with her parents and two brothers, one older, one younger. She visited them whenever she could. Everyone in her apartment building loved her, she even made dinner for one of the elderly occupants every Friday. Spencer doubts there is anything that would want to make her commit suicide, and to put the icing on the cake, there were puncture marks on her ears that police mistook for piercings. ‘What were they?’ you ask? Injection sites. How do we know this? Spencer swore that there was no way they could be piercings because Camille never wore earrings the entire 8 years he knew her because the Next Star Theatre Company does not allow their dancers to wear piercings or jewelry.”
“Alright, let’s go see if these people got any info for us.” Rossi got out of his seat and headed towards the interview rooms.

Today’s Enviro-explainer: NFT, Crypto, and Blockchain, and why they suck
As of approximately 9 AM this morning (9 March 2021) I became aware of the latest cryptocurrency based pyramid scheme masquerading as information security, the NFT, or Non Fungible Token, and my seasonal mania decided to drag it into comprehensibility like a dog digging out a warren of baby rabbits. Because I did this, artists and writers of Tumblr can profit from knowing why you should not trade in, or allow other people to sell, your work via NFTs or engage in cryptocurrency at all. Press J now if you’re seeing this for the second time. First, my qualifications: I have a BA in Environmental Science, a crash course in cryptography, and a shiny little sticker from grade 7 or 8 for “best instructional essay.”
1) What is cryptocurrency? Cryptocurrency is the solutions of a series of extremely difficult math problems, which people “mine” by running thousands of computers at once, and have agreed to use to exchange goods and services, some of which are even legal, on the internet. The price of any cryptocurrency, in terms of real world dollars, depends mostly on what people are willing to exchange for it, driven by scarcity, manufactured scarcity, marketing, and getting as many people to buy in as possible. It’s like DeBeers decided that their blood diamonds would also be a pyramid scheme. And you can’t even use a bitcoin to build a laser, because without electricity and internet access, you have nothing. Cryptocurrency has a lot of rhetoric attached about why people are into it, but the way it would function, were it to succeed in its end goals of mostly replacing government issue legal tender, is to take the power to print money out of the hands of governments around the world, and put it in the hands of people who are already excessively wealthy, wasting a hell of a lot of electricity along the way. At least you can light a fire with monopoly money.
The good news: success is not inevitable, based on practical problems (energy use, getting enough people who aren’t terminally online techbros to buy in that you can actually be paid real human grocery buying dollars in exchange for your bitcoin) and theoretically it could be shut down at any time, from within due to technical or interpersonal problems, or from without by various world governments telling banks that they cannot legally use crypto as money. It would probably only take the USA and China to make a dent. Quick, someone tell Mitch McConnell that cryptocurrency is socialism and someone else tell Xi Jinping that it’s calling him Winnie the Pooh.
The bad news: Creating any cryptocurrency wastes a stupid amount of electricity. Aside from all of the questions about the world economy, market volatility, and how “secure” your rights to a piece of badly compressed art stolen off twitter are, the electricity useage of all forms of cryptocurrency is staggering. In 2020, the electricity use of just farming bitcoin was estimated to be greater than the entire energy use of Argentina.
There are many more cryptocurrencies than bitcoin, and due to the way cryptocurrency transactions are encrypted, just “mining” them isn’t the end of it. Every transaction has to be verified via another extremely energy-hungry process. It’s like printing out every financial transaction that has ever occurred regarding your blood diamond in duplicate in binary and ritually burning it every time you open your bank account to check if the diamond is still there.
And like the least ethical bank in the world, the newest cryptocurrency scam, the NFT or Non Fungible Token, will charge you for depositing and withdrawing their blood diamond monopoly money from their own damn ATM.
2) No really, how can a bunch of computer calculations be hurting the environment? Time for a thought experiment about how encryption works!
Banking and prime numbers: The majority of banking-related encryption these days is secured using a series of prime numbers. Computer A picks out two prime numbers to use as an encryption key, communicates them via an arcane guess and check system to computer B, and they agree to apply the numbers to every piece of data they exchange. Because of the guess and check system, a third computer wiretapping their internet connection physically cannot intercept the encryption key, because it’s never transmitted. The two computers are playing a game of Guess Who, and the interceptor does not know if they’re using classic or marvel heroes edition, so knowing if the prime numbers are wearing hats doesn’t help. And because the numbers involved are very large primes, it takes far too long for someone who wants to hack your bank account to guess the right numbers for it to ever be useful. Checking the encryption against pairs (or larger sets) of very large prime numbers takes either years or thousands of computers worth of processing power. It is WAY easier to send you an email from “Your bank” telling you to update your password via the link. But cryptocurrency does not work like that. Cryptocurrency solves for N: Cryptocurrency stores the records of the prime numbers (or other computational bits) of EVERY transaction it has ever been in. It does this by scattering bits of them around hundreds and thousands of computers, and every time you want to buy a bitcoin soda, it calls them all up, orders them, and attatches a new recipt to the end. And because cryptocurrency is, in it’s most comprehensible form, a series of very large prime numbers that people use to gamble with, creating every single piece of it requires MORE computing power than the previous.
We will complete the following visualization using extremely large prime numbers, because they’re the easiest solutions to the formulas that create cryptocurrency for most of us to visualize. Remember, a cryptocurrency is a stupidly complicated equation with a potentially infinite number of answers, you could easily use prime numbers.
Reasonable people (mathematicians) have spent a hell of a lot of years searching for the Next Largest Prime Number. Prime numbers are whole integers not divisible by any other number besides one, and for this reason, there is an infinite number of ones that exist, and a limited number of ones we know about. In order to find the Next Largest Prime, we use computers to systematically check increasingly large numbers against every other known prime to see if they’re divisible by any.
This process uses a lot of computer time and gets more difficult every time a new prime is discovered, because every time we find a new prime, we have - Another prime to check every new integer against - A larger, but not predictably sized amount of numbers to check individually and throw out before Next Prime - a fractionally larger amount of time taken to perform every calculation in the process, because the numbers keep getting larger.
Much like it will take you longer to calculate 3 / 276432 by hand using long division than it would to write out 3/36. The difference in calculation time for a computer with those two numbers is so small it basically doesn’t exist, but the numbers involved in calculating Next Prime are ludicrously large.
As of December 2020, Largest Prime is 282,589,933 -1. The notation looks weird because we don’t have a word for how many place values it has. It has 24,862,048 NUMERALS in it. At 30k characters per printed page, this is 829 or so pages of text. It’s three or four doorstopper fantasy novels. It’s almost two full reams of paper.
You can probably carry this number, if you do it carefully, and it took two years to find after the Last Largest Prime in 2018. You’re probably not using the current Largest Prime to buy a digital album off Elon Musk’s wife, so let’s continue the visualization with a much smaller prime that you mined by finding the largest prime not already owned by someone involved in bitcoin, which is only five hundred pages long.
Blockchain picks five hundred odd people to hand the pages out to, and contains more pages for supplementary instructions, for any and all of the following, metaphorically - what order they go in
- who got each page
- Signatures verifying who received each page - Signatures of who delivered each page - What time it was delivered All of these instructions are then encrypted using another reasonably sized prime number, too small to be worth mining, and then stored. When a cryptocoin is first spent, your five hundred pages of numerals and the signed, time stamped records of where they have been stored are assembled. Your computer signs for all of them. Your computer runs a quick check to make sure that the number you have reassembled is still prime, which, while way faster than minting the coin in the first place, still takes a stupid amount of computing power. The transaction is made and then records of the coin’s new owner are logged, redistributed, signed, and stored, but all those pages, including the signatures, have to be printed out again onto new pieces of paper. Your printer runs out of ink six times. You now have generated an authentication trail that takes up at least as much paper as the cryptocoin itself. That single 400 page prime number that you lovingly mined, and then spent, was worth ninety five cents the day that you spent it, because each cryptocoin, while wildly valuable in theory, is composed of dozens of prime numbers and, like the stock market, worth whatever real money people will pay for it that day. A single prime is worth some partial share of that.
The process of completing the purchase of one iTunes album requires you to do this entire rigamarole seven more times.
3. Thanks, I hate it! Crypto can die! Now what’s NFT?
A Non Fungible Token is a way of uploading any data you can find on the internet into the series of calculations that create a blockchain, or any other calculation in a cryptocurrency transaction. This includes text, like this post, image files like your artwork, and the disgusted tweet I made when I learned about this stupid waste of energy before my caffeine kicked in. In terms of energy use and world economy disruption, it’s exactly the same as any dozens of cryptocurrencies out there, but multiplied by another arbitrarily large prime number because so many transactions are being done with it. Currently, the following things are happening: - Artists and other creators are being pressured by clients and peers and random crypto stock gamblers into joining the Multi-Level-Marketing scheme of NFT, which claims to transfer all ownership of an artwork (or other data) permanently from the artist to the NFT holder. Because it attaches a string of numbers that even god doesn’t have time to decode to the file, anyone who knows which calculations produce that string knows that it’s the original. People are buying the pedigree of art, much like they bought the prestige and marketing and “authenticity” of a mined diamond with a certificate attached. Practically, there is nothing securing this art: it can be redistributed or copied anywhere, just like any piece of digital media, by anyone with the right knowledge. Legally, god knows what the ruling would be on selling that same piece of art for real human money, but I wouldn’t gamble, because when it comes to the law, the international internet is the wild west.
- Selling their art with cryptocurrency attached to NFT costs artists real human money, because they have to buy crypto to pay the fee to put it up for auction, and then another fee for accepting the crypto money, which still cannot buy you a sandwich, when they sell it. - The price of cryptocurrency varies wildly and you could end up putting up a piece of art for a single cryptocoin worth $20 in real world dollars, selling it for 100 cryptocoins that are worth $40 USD at time of purchase, and being charged one cryptocoin, currently worth $50 USD, to finalize that transaction, meaning that you just spent thirty dollars to potentially lose all rights to your artwork. (See disclaimer about the legality of this being not so much questionable as absolutely unexplored) - Because NFT’s function like all other packets of computer data that create cryptocurrency, anyone can scrape your art or writing off the internet, convert them into the correct format, and both claim to “own” them (legally dubious but some court will bite), use them to play turbo tulip stock roulette when trading cryptocoin and, depending on what parameters the stupidly long algorithm for their crypto of choice sets, use the data that tells your computer what they look like to generate more cryptocurrencies. - All while using more electricity for a single transaction than you used in all of 2020.
IN CONCLUSION / Too long, I hate Math, Did Not Read: Just say no to NFT and all cryptocurrency related schemes. Even if you don’t give a shit about other people, the environment, or the potential legal precedent that some internet scalper could use a bot to make thousands of theoretical dollars off your artwork (in which case I must politely show you the door: get off my blog) you will not personally benefit from cryptocurrency. The only people to profit in any pyramid scheme are the first tier of originators, and if the scheme is already worth thousands of dollars, it’s too late. Tell your well heeled relatives to avoid cryptocurrency in stocks. Tell your bank, if they serve you an ad about investing in crypto, that you hate the environmental impact and the extremely large financial risk. Tell your senator that you, a person who definitely has enough money to worry about the global market, that it’s undermining the value of the american federal reserve, or whatever lump of financial authority your respective country has on hand. Super Genius Marinette Ch. 1
So, I read Marinette: Iron Man Rising & Ladybug: Young Avenger by @unmaskedagain and total loved them. Then I got the idea, what if Marinette was Ironman’s kid. I know there’s been a lot of BioDad ideas for Marinette and I wanted to try this one out. Hope you guys love it!
I stare down at my classmates over the top of my iPad. They were all chatting away about random things they would be doing during the summer and their pool party celebration after final exams. There were a few pointed jabs at me by Alya and Lila, but I simply ignored them. They’d gotten worse this year after it was revealed that I supposedly forced Lila to lie about having a lying disease to get out my expulsion the year previous. I simply rolled my eyes at their naivety. Coming next fall, this entire class would crash and burn.
My class had a lot of potential, however, they never really did anything with it. It didn’t help that this entire room ran itself off of my scheduling, reminders, and fundraising due to my class representative job. I was still kind of angry at myself for taking the job. I was already juggling a lot of work. Being Ladybug was time-consuming enough, adding on class representative duties put me behind in my real studies. That was one secret I had been harboring for years. I am a child genius and the daughter of the famous Tony Stark.
When my mother was young she had a brief one night stand with my biological father, Tony Stark, while on vacation. When my mother was just a few months pregnant, she met my Papa at baking class. They started dating and ended up opening a store together. When I was just 1, they married. Now, shortly after my birth, my Mama called my Dad to inform him that she was pregnant. A DNA test was done on the sly. My father never revealed that he had a child and my existence was kept a secret. So secret that only my Father, Mama, Papa, Aunt Pepper, Uncle Rhodes, Uncle Happy, my Papa’s parents, and my Mama’s parents knew about it. A small circle that somehow remained small.
My father sent birthday gifts, called and video chatted, and he even attended a ceremony in Paris when I was a child. However, all three of my parents wanted me to have a normal life. It was slightly more difficult when I managed to trick-out a computer at four and fix household appliances at six. They ended up sending me to a specialized école élémentarie. I was put on a fast-tracked schedule that had a lot of self-studying and online learning. If I kept to the schedule, I would graduate from Lycée at 14 and started University at 15. A few months younger than my father.
I, however, insisted on attending normal school to keep up with kids my age. I didn’t care as much about starting university at an unusual age. I did skip a grade, however, as I couldn’t hide all of my knowledge. So, I started at a regular école élémentarie. Classes were general alright, I enjoyed the literature classes and speed through the science and math classes. I mostly did my advanced work in class. As long as I turned in my homework and wasn’t bothering people, my teachers didn’t care. Chloe did put a bit of a damper on friendships, as no one wanted to anger the Mayor’s daughter. However, I still enjoyed regular school.
When I started Collége Françoise Dupont, at age 10, I was already through the first year of the materials. It got easier with me being in Madame Bustier’s class. She was a nice teacher but didn’t control her classroom very well. For two years I managed to do my advanced work without her ever knowing. Frankly, her relaxed environment made it easier for me to work ahead. When I started my third year of Collége, I had done all of the materials already. A year and a ½ of studying in a year’s worth of time.
Of course, this is when it got messy. I received the Ladybug miraculous and made some real friends, or so I thought. All of this was fun and great, but it made working ahead more difficult. Adding on Ladybug work and class representative work made it possible for me to only do a year’s worth of Lycée work in a year.
Father called, a little worried, but I easily calmed him down. I was still three years ahead of everyone else, plus adding on all of my design work and my class representative duties would make my college application even better. Less studying gave me more time to do independent work. My pseudonym, Maria, created several green energy products, three different popular apps, and an extremely lightweight, flame-resistant, and shrapnel resistant line for firefighters. I was a success, and I would continue to be, despite all of Lila’s mechanisms. Either way, I was in the last few hours of class with these idiots. Starting next fall, I’d be attending MIT in Massachusetts.
I had a small, personal graduation from my specialized Lycée a week ago. I sent my transcripts from both my specialized Lycée and one from Lycée Françoise Dupont. I did get Madame Mandeleiev to help me get video footage of Lila framing me for my expulsion and write a letter explaining the issue of my rescinded expulsion on my record. A brief phone call and an email containing the Ladyblog link told MIT everything they needed to know about my classroom. I did get asked why I stayed. Truthfully, I wanted to see this through. After Lila’s return in the second half of my Troisieme year, I started collecting evidence against the Collége and Lycée Françoise Dupont for enabling bullies, extreme favoritism, and incompetence.
“Marinette?” I glance up from my iPad to see Madame Bustier looking at me. The entire class is now looking at me. Lila is smirking next to Bustier. “Can you apologize to Lila?”
I raise one eyebrow. “What am I apologizing to Lila about?”
“For your rude and threatening words earlier, before class started, in the locker room.” Madame Buster speaks to me as if I am a small child. She’d done that to me for a while because I skipped a year. She seemed to think that because I was a year younger than everyone else, I need to be treated like a child. After Lila’s arrival, she became even more condescending.
I glance at the clock really quickly. 2 minutes until the bell and just a few hours until I would be flying first class to New York. “I didn’t go to the locker room this morning Madame Bustier.”
Mrs. Bustier sighs. Lila smirks before sobbing loudly. It sounded horrible and fake, like some cheap amateur actress. “Oh, Marinette. I didn’t want to make a big deal about this. I just wanted you to apologize for your mean words and for stealing my iPad-I mean, oops!” Lila’s shirk is back, but the entire class misses it to turn to glare at me. Then the comments started.
“Dude, stealing is not cool!”
“Stop being such a bully!”
“I thought we could trust you!”
“I can’t believe this! I used to think you were such a good person.”
“Just give Lila back the iPad, Marinette.”
I roll my eyes, putting the iPad in my hand into my bag. “File a report.”
There’s silence. “What?” Lila looks at me in confusion.
“File a report. If I really stole this iPad from you, go to the police. Have them do an investigation.” The bell rings above us and I stand from my seat. Everyone is still in the same spots, too stunted by my declaration to do anything.
I walk down the stairs until I’m in front of Mrs. Bustier. I pull out a file and hand it to her. “I’m unable to be Class Representative next year. This is everything I need to hand over for my successor. All of the money earned for the Graduation trip in two years is in the class savings account. I left a page detailing how much was earned at each event this year.”
I move to leave the room, but Mrs. Bustier steps in front of me. “Marinette, we talked about this. The Marinette of the world, setting an example.”
I met Mrs. Bustier’s eyes with a flat look. “Mrs. Bustier, I have a flight to catch, please move.”
“Marinette!” She sighs, but I had already moved around her.
Chaos starts to erupt behind me in the classroom. Students yelling about me being childish, some saying Lila should press charges, and others saying that they should just enjoy me being gone. Either way, it was no longer my problem. I didn’t have time for stupid people.

MORS NON EST (Nathan Bateman x Reader)
(so. um. this was inspired by a dream i had? because my brain does weird things at night and then sometimes i write them.)
Word Count: almost 4k oops

Or, what my brain offers as alternate theory on why Nathan made AIs.
Warnings: Leaving this mortal coil (sort of), angsty musings, maybe a swear or two. Okay there’s definitely a swear or...several. (also a disclaimer that I finished this at like 3am and there was a bunch of stuff out of order but I think I got it all worked out now and proofread and all that, but apologies if anything is still wonky)
The rain fell steadily against the wall of glass that faced towards the forest. Sometimes it was soft, like the tickle of a feather, the softest caress of a kiss on your hair, the skim of fingertips against the velvet red petals of a flower. Other times it was harsh, a violently crashing wave on the rocky shore, electricity ripping the sky asunder, an unbridled fierceness like a wild animal frightened and possessed.
It changed without warning.
Soft, hard. Quiet, loud. Calm, violent. Back and forth and back again.
How long had it been raining?
He turned as he heard your footsteps fall on the wooden patio planks behind him. You watched in slight fascination as he unwrapped his hands, used the cloth to dry them, and stuck a hand out to you, your attention half on him and half on the pure beauty of the surrounding scenery.
“You must be the new assistant,” he said, sounding friendly enough although his smile stayed a bit reserved.
He wasn’t expecting you to just show up on his deck. Yes, he was expecting you to be dropped off by the helicopter, that had all been arranged, but for some reason he had...he realized he wasn’t even sure what he was expecting. But you had clearly followed the pilot’s (and soon after, the house’s - that the house told you what to do amused him in the strangest way) instructions and here you were.
He knew his new assistant was more than capable (he had seen your resume, reviewed your coding and debugging history, had meticulously poured over every single little detail of work you had done for his company for the past three years not that he was obsessive about it or anything) but he wasn’t prepared for the person that now stood before him, an intriguing combination of impressed, unsure, interested, and underwhelmed.
You were fucking beautiful.
You nodded. “That’s what they tell me,” you replied, shaking his hand and supplying your name, even though you knew he already knew it. You knew enough about Nathan Bateman to know he knew everything about you before you even heard the head of HR back in the corporate office announce that you got the job.
You later admitted you didn’t know what to think about him either, and you hadn’t really expected anything, since you didn’t know much about him. He was a genius, everyone knew that, and he lived all the way out here by himself. And...that was about it. That’s what you knew.
And you thought he was...kinda hot.
And also an asshole, you liked to point out as the days went on. Nathan didn’t really mind.

It was an odd feeling, this feeling of dissonance and uncertainty.
There was so much that needed to be done. There was so much that he didn’t feel like doing.
He came to the door and paused. He spent most of his waking hours in this room - and to be honest, most of his hours were waking at this point, he rarely slept anyway and for as long as he could remember now he had barely slept, except when all that whiskey and vodka kicked in - and yet there was always a moment, the briefest flash of time, where forward momentum paused and he wondered if non-linear time was reality and he would find something different when he opened the door.
It wasn’t, and he never did.
He wandered into the lab and over to the table at the farthest end. Components were spread out before him and he idly reached over to the single chip laying in the center of the mess. It was the last piece of this particular puzzle, the last bit that had to be installed and configured and then…
Then suddenly it became too quiet and too loud all at once. Thoughts were screaming through his brain and he just wanted it to be quiet for a moment.
Quiet so he could go over his calculations in his head. Quiet so he could double check his math. Quiet so he could concentrate on his theories and his expected outcomes. Quiet so he could revel, just for a moment, in his monumental achievement.
There was a sweater hanging on the back of the door. He’d forgotten it was there, even though he had just seen it mere hours before. No, not forgotten, he realized. Blocked. He didn’t forget, he just purposely didn’t remember.
The silent noise became a full-blown cacophony.
Was it still raining?

“So how exactly are you going to solve it?” you asked one afternoon, idly twirling your pen in your hand.
“How would you do it?” he bounced back.
You sighed. His behavior was so typical. The man was a certifiable genius but that was usually the problem and not the solution. It was never straightforward. “The AI. How are you going to solve the issue of making it able to have an actual conversation with you?”
“How would you do it?” he asked again.
Shrugging your shoulders, you kept twirling the pen. “I dunno. I guess you’d have to have some way to...maybe cross-reference a database of expressions and emotions and an actual dictionary.”
Nathan paused and considered you, deep in his own forest of thought. He wheeled his chair over to his computer desk and started rapidly tapping keys. “How do you mean?”
“I don’t know,” you huffed. “Like...like some kind of mass well of every available, possible interaction. Honestly I would try to figure out the mechanics of everything else first, like motion and movement, You know, walking and running and sitting and standing.”
“Hmmm.”
“But since there are literally infinite combinations, I don’t even know how you would go about even attempting that kind of data pool.”
“I did actually have an idea about that,” he muttered. Nathan didn’t even turn from his multiple computer monitors and his fingers never stopped clacking away at his keyboard. “But you’re not going to like it.”
This time you groaned instead of sighing. He knew you could feel it coming before he asked - he always told you that you weren’t going to like it before he asked you to do something incredibly stupid that in any other circumstance would get you arrested and you’d never see daylight again.
But this was Nathan Bateman, and of course he was going to ask anyway. And of course you would say yes. You always said yes, it was one of the things he enjoyed most about your company, and even when you did say no, it gave way to a lively debate and a genuine argument over facts and merits, downsides and advantages, and it was fucking amazing.
It had been that way from the start, grown steadily over the weeks and months, and neither of you could really complain. Nathan quickly found that you could keep up with his train of thought even when the track switched abruptly and it was so engaging. Captivating. Enticing.
But this man. This amazingly intelligent (if almost insufferably arrogant) man was going to be the death of you. You told him that at least once a day. He took it as a personal challenge to give you a reason to keep living.
“What did you have in mind?” You doubted you wanted to know.
“What if…” he replied, clicking away, not looking up from the screen as he spoke, “we used the video and audio coding in Bluebook, and patched it through all the cell phone carriers, and rerouted all the satellite signals back here into the lab.”
Before you knew what was happening, your pen flew across the room and connected with his shoulder with a small *thwap*.
“What?” he finally looked up, mock annoyance in his voice.
“Are you absolutely fucking insane, or is this just an extra special occasion?”

He left the lab with no real idea of where he was going.
Okay, that was a lie. It was his house. He knew his way around and he knew where he needed to be next. There was an actual agenda but his focus was off.
He walked past the living room and noticed the chess set was still set out on the coffee table. The pieces were still fairly evenly matched, his green dragons maybe just slightly at a disadvantage to your purple ones (because, as you had mentioned at one point, why have a standard chess set when you could have a fun one? And Nathan knew you were anything but standard.)
He knew it was his turn and contemplated the board for a few minutes. No matter how he strategized it, how he worked it out, how he tried to plan it, you had forced him into a checkmate. Again. For at least the sixth time in a row, and probably at least the eight-seventh time out of the last hundredth you had played. He chuckled, softly, briefly. He could do anything with technology and science, but he rarely could beat you at a centuries-old board game.
He made his final move for this round, sacrificing his king to your queen.
He grabbed the notepad setting next to the chess board, and your pen that lay nearby on the table. He scrawled a quick note to you - checkmate - and placed it on your side of the board, next to your fairly gained draconian horde, even though he was certain you were never going to read it.
He went to the kitchen and poured himself a drink.
He stared out the window wall, out past the deck, to the running river and the dense groves of trees, off into the distance towards the waterfall.
He should be heading to the room. He should be taking care of the final chip install and making sure everything was online. Instead he simply stood in the kitchen and stared out into the rain.
It occurred to him that the agenda was more of a guideline and his knowledge of his surroundings was merely functional.

Nathan briefly considered that standing at the doorway to your bedroom was the last place he should be, but then decided he didn’t care. But that wasn’t true either.
He could just walk in, it wouldn’t be the first time - once you had been wearing only a towel, having just gotten out of the shower and that hadn’t been awkward at all - but that small bit of his conscience that he usually tried to ignore, told him to be polite.
He knocked.
“What do you want, Nathan?” You sounded muffled, like you had your face partly covered by a pillow. You were probably in bed. He shouldn’t be bothering you.
He had to bother you, just this once. “Can I come in?”
He could picture your face on the other side, eyes rolling and the sigh as it left your lips, and even though he heard the door hiss quietly as the latch released, his feet suddenly stuck to floor outside your door and his body made no further move.
“I did open the door, so if you’re going to, do it before I change my mind,” you called after a few minutes.
Nathan got his feet to cooperate and entered your room. You were in bed, face half-behind a pillow, your visible eye glaring at him. He stopped at the edge of your bed. His brain started calculating risk factors for the current situation, gains, deficits, advantages - anything it could think of, there were always factors involved, no matter what the situation was, it was just that some factors were more complicated than others. Some required more delicate, cautious manipulation to solve the equation and…
“Are you just going to stand there all night and look at me? Because I swear I really will kick you out, and then change all your passcodes.”
Of course, you teased him later about how much fun it would have been to watch him try to get back in. You swore you were going to do it one day, just for the hell of it. He didn’t mind.
“Do you regret what happened after dinner?” he finally asked.
Your glare softened and you moved the pillow away from your face. Dinner was fine. The company was pleasant as usual, the wine was frequent and flowing. The two of you had started a very animated debate about gender and sexuality as it pertained to artificial intelligence and if any of it were a necessary component or if it was just something you would prefer (he would later tell you how wonderful the expression on your face was when he told you he would be ready to start building a prototype in the next few weeks) and then.
“I don’t regret it at all. Do you?” you arched an eyebrow at him.
Nathan blew a long breath out from his nose. Did he regret kissing you? Nope. Not in the slightest. Did he regret that you might regret it (he was slightly relieved that you said you didn’t) and that nothing would come of it? Yes. And he couldn’t calculate the actual result, just potential outcomes with no concrete denouement, and that made him extremely uncomfortable. He didn’t want this to be an experiment. He wanted an absolute, not a thicket of random. Not in this case.
“No.” He still didn’t move.
“Frankly we should have done it months ago.”
He shook his head and turned just the slightest bit before your reply registered and he processed it. “Wait. You...what?”
You exhaled and sighed as you rolled over, facing away from him and trying to get comfortable in the bed again. “You know, Nathan Bateman, for being the smartest man in the universe, sometimes you are a complete idiot.”
“I’m not going to argue that. This time, anyway.”
“Thank you, because it’s nearly three in morning,” you replied. He could hear the smile in your voice. “Can we talk about this in the morning? Like, later in the morning. I’ll see you for breakfast.”
He nodded and really did turn to leave this time. He was still trying to process. “Okay. Yeah, sure. I, uh...I’ll see you then.”
“Good night, Nathan.”

The rain had finally stopped.
He looked out over the landscape, now reflecting and refracting tiny bursts of sunlight in the lingering blanket of droplets.
Trees crowded both sides of the rushing river, leading towards the top of the waterfall. There was a small clearing there, one that almost wouldn’t be found if someone wasn’t looking for it. It was one of your favorite spots.
Nathan found you there fairly often, after he had shown you where it was. If the weather was cooperating, and you weren’t in the house, then nine times out of ten, that’s where Nathan would find you. Sometimes you were reading a book, sometimes you were just stretched out in the grass, looking up at the tips of the timbers as they reached to the sky.
Sometimes he would join you. Those were times that deep conversations would happen, about the projects back at the house and technology and your odd fascination with disco music, which Nathan truly did not understand but tried to humor.
Sometimes he would just smile and let you have your peace. Those were times he would go back to the house and quietly await your return.
He knew that’s where he would find you now.

“I’m back from Anchorage,” you called as you came in the front door.
Nathan was in the kitchen and poked his head around the doorway. “Hey. Perfect timing,” he said, brushing his hands off on his pants and flipping a dish towel over his shoulder. “Dinner is almost ready.”
A tired sign escaped your lips as you flopped down on the couch, taking one of the throw pillows and covering your chest and half your face with it. “Thanks. Not hungry.”
“How was the trip?”
You snorted softly. “Wet. Raining. Absolutely miserable.”
It wasn’t what you said that made Nathan stop. It was the way you said it. Your voice sounded so tired, so empty. It didn’t really sound like you, not the voice he’d come to expect to hear every day. It was not the voice that engaged him in conversation, that drew him into theories and concepts and philosophies. It was not the voice that argued about codes and programs and why that would not work no matter how much he insisted it would (to be fair, you were usually right, but he wasn’t going down without a good fight, and neither of you would have it any other way.) The voice that was leaving your body through your mouth wasn’t you.
It sounded hollow.
He leaned against the doorway. The air in the room suddenly felt heavier and he couldn’t quite get his feet to move forward to the couch where you sat. “What did they say?”
Nathan noted that you didn’t look at him. You looked everywhere but him. Like you were trying to keep everything from falling to pieces, maybe? You were definitely not acting yourself either. Suddenly he wanted to take himself outside and kick his own ass. He should have gone with you. You’d been talking about it, for weeks now, he realized.
How tired you were. How you were never really hungry. How things felt like they were getting harder when they shouldn’t have been. How you couldn’t go quite as far on the hikes you loved taking so much, together.
He should have gone with you.
Your face did not move from its half-protected shield behind that tasteful throw pillow.
He doesn’t register most of what you said. He remembers the words “bad” and “already done everything” and “months, maybe”. Maybe. No definite conclusion.
He finally managed to take a few steps towards you.
His brain was kicking into overdrive but not a single one of that rush of thoughts would make an appearance on his tongue. There had to be another answer. Another answer that wasn’t the one he could already see in your eyes.
Your eyes. His favorite feature (at least from the neck up), the ones that showed how much life you had, your spark, your fire.
And he realized the hollowness of your voice had traveled up into those beautiful eyes.
Words stopped making sense in an instant. Everything around him got fuzzy, jagged at the edges, but also intensely focused at the same time.
He finally crossed the room and sat down carefully, warily, on the couch.
Neither of you said another word. His arms slipped around you and you curled into his chest, pulling your knees up to your own. No tears from either of you. No sounds. No words.
He didn’t know how long you stayed on that couch.
The next thing you knew you were in bed, Nathan’s arms still wrapped around you. He must have carried you to the bedroom at some point. You felt the coolness of the sheets contrast with the warmth of his body; you mustn’t have been out for long. You were about to drift off again when Nathan finally broke the silence.
“We’ll figure out a way.”
A sigh escaped your lips, half drenched in sleep.

It was the last place he wanted to be. It was the only place he wanted to go.
He slipped into a hoodie and pulled on a pair of shoes and stepped out onto the deck. The air was still somewhat saturated, humid, but the rain was holding off for now. It was warm but he wasn’t, so the hoodie stayed on.
His feet took him down the deck stairs and onto the path paralleling the river. He followed it slowly, breathing in the summer air but not really seeing his surroundings. Like in his house, he knew where he was heading, and this was just the agenda.
At some point (minutes, hours, he really didn’t know how much time had passed) he came to that small clearing of trees.
And there you were.
Nathan took a jagged breath and sat down next to you. His pants were soaked in an instant, but he didn’t care. He was more annoyed that you were cold and wet (he briefly considered how funny you would find the double entendre, and probably tell him that you were definitely wet but he never made you feel cold) and chuckled again when he could hear your scoffing insistence that you were fine here in your special spot.
You weren’t fine. He knew this and wished desperately that you could tell him, tell him anything, say something.
He wasn’t fine. And he definitely did mind.
Nathan didn’t know what else to do, so he just started talking.
“So, uh...I know it’s been a while. I’ve just been really busy, trying to get the AI just right, and...I’m sorry I’ve been away. That’s not what I meant to happen. I’ve been working pretty much non-stop, I know you would be nagging me to get some sleep and eat better and all that shit. And...I wish you would. I would listen to you, for once.”
Silence and the far-off chirp of a bird were his only reply, so he continued.
“I know I shouldn’t be working so much, but I kinda have to. It’s the only way I feel close enough to…”
His throat was acutely, suddenly dry. He did his best to clear it. He was only marginally successful.
“So anyway, that idea I told you about, with all the cell phone data rerouting it here? It worked. Please don’t be mad at me, I know it wasn’t your favorite idea, but I’m pretty sure that’s what finally broke this open. Well, that and all the ideas we worked out together. I can’t thank you enough for what you did for me, and I know I never really did, and I probably never will…”
He had remembered to grab one thing before he left the house, stashing it in the pocket of the hoodie. He pulled it out now, a single red rose. Cliche, maybe, but they were your favorite flower.
Nathan placed it gently against the stone on the edge of the clearing. The stone with your name. It only had your first name, no dates. He could never bear to put any indicator of time on it; it was too final. Conclusive. Terminal.
He stood and started walking back. He never could stay here very long. It was absolutely ridiculous, but he usually had the feeling you would pop out from behind a tree and tease him about how impressive your joke was and he would never top it.
It wasn’t a joke, it wasn’t funny, and he wished he could prove you wrong.
But there was still something he might be able to prove. To make a few things right.
He stopped at the edge of the clearing.
“I have someone else coming to the house this week. He works for the company, he’s a coder...he looks like a good kid. I’m gonna use him to test this model. This really could be the breakthrough we’ve...I’ve...been looking for.”
Nathan turned his head back briefly, to say one last thing before he headed back to the house, before he had to get back to his work.
“I promise I’ll come back soon and tell you all about it.”
The rain started softly coming down again.
