my kyoru
OMG, it hurts me that they are cutting so many scenes of my dear Kyoru, but considering that they are focusing more on the facts than the feelings themselves ... as far as this goes, at least they are spinning it 'half 'well. And what do I mean by this? Because they have already put everything they had to put on the table so that what is going to happen in the next chapter, that the viewer understands it perfectly. Understand why Kyo will react like this and why Tohru feels so quick to tell him what he feels.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let's be clear; We are now almost more than halfway through the season, and they will definitely need to put THE REASONS before the CONFLICT, the climax, which is understood quickly or in a few words. This has caught a super fast pace, total ...
I want to believe that as they have it structured in the anime, everything makes sense: like that momentary lapse of Kyo, as if he did not already remember what happened to Tohru's mother from before (which is now done a bit ??? ??? when you remember the scene where Kyo apologizes in the first season). I want to think that what happened at the beginning of this chapter also with his own mother is to add much more drama to the matter, destroy Kyo more (? And that his reaction in the next chapter, is much more, apart from understandable, almost desperate.
Tumblr media
And now, I go with the relationship in the anime between Kyo and Tohru, which after all the above and seeing how they have wanted to approach it ... I find it very confusing !!! In the anime it is obvious that they feel for the other, but they hide it, they fight with their problems internally and they almost win them. I find it confusing because there seems to be no point where they are. It is obvious what they feel ... but the exaggerated concern of both, make that even if it is reciprocal, sometimes it seems an impossible love.
Tumblr media
However, the vision that someone who has (have) read the manga may have is different and aaaaghhhh !!! The one who is reading it, it is quite clear that they like each other because of their looks, the gestures, the blushes of both... AND STILL THEY HAVE THEIR PROBLEMS. Tohru and Kyo in the manga are adooooooorable with each other, he cares a lot for her and she is also aware of him, the whole atmosphere between them is so soft and not THAT RUDE BRO.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
*** these scenes are after sheet scene.
speak to you from the heart and as someone who since I read the manga, it became my favorite stories: if you want tender moments between the couple, more development in general and fully enjoy the work, for the love of God, read manga . You can do it from S2.
THAT SAID, I'm still looking forward to seeing the next chapter and praying they put in some cute scene in the future. Since the banquet is ending, I'm not going to pretend to leave.

Thoughts on Kyoru in Fruits Basket: The Final as a manga reader
(and bad metaphors about lava cake)
So with next week's impending shit storm of a Furuba episode next week, I've been doing some reflecting on our favorite Mutual Pining Idiots, Kyoru--and thinking about how the anime adaptation's choices in rearranging or removing content has impacted things, specifically with Se3E6.
And just to preface, I think the anime adaptation has been terrific overall. I also think loving something and critiquing something aren't mutually exclusive either. The goal of what I'm about to write is not to incite negativity, just to get some feelings out about my favorite pairing from my favorite manga series and provoke some deeper thought, I guess.
ALSO, I hope you don't mind metaphors--specifically ones about chocolate-raspberry lava cake, because that's what I've decided works best for explaining Kyoru. So FASTEN THOSE SEATBELTS PEOPLE
MANGA SPOILERS regarding previously omitted content as well as VAGUE ANIME SPOILERS that can be implied/inferred from the ending of Se3E7 under the cut.
I think one of the (many) reasons I find Kyoru to be such a satisfying ship is because of the slow-burn element. Come season 2 through the beach arc, their chemistry is palpable, natural, and growing stronger and stronger with each episode. When Kyo finally admits to himself that he's in love with Tohru in Se2E9, it feels like we've been rewarded with a chocolate lava cake topped with raspberry sauce--it's delicious, complex, and full of gooey and satisfying substance.
Now like many, I'm a sucker for the pining idiot trope--let alone the MUTUAL pining idiot trope--and we do get to see this through the end of season 2 as Tohru's feelings for Kyo become more apparent to everyone BUT her. It's like we're LOOKING at the chocolate-raspberry lava cake, so close that we can ALMOST touch it, but we as viewers aren't allowed to cut into it yet--which makes every little encounter between the two of them all the more exciting, because we wonder what's finally going to allow us to ravish this goddamn lava cake (sorry).
Tumblr media
Which is why I realized I'm actually struggling more than I initially thought in the final season. As it's been widely speculated, discussed, and now officially confirmed, we're getting 13 episodes this season. And while like most everyone else, I'd be thrilled with two cours, I don't know the ins and outs of anime production, AND, while I'm bummed, I've accepted that it is what it is--and that it isn't the reason I'm writing this post.
Of course not every panel or fleeting moment can be adapted from the manga to the anime. There were small little cuts here and there over the course of the first two seasons, but nothing in my opinion that's really SO substantial that it drained the lava cake of its filling--maybe some of that raspberry topping, but generally, the good stuff is all there. (Though I do love this moment below from chapter 82, which was skipped over in Se2E19)
Tumblr media
The final season has been different, though. As we know in the manga, the inner turmoil for Kyo--and Tohru to an extent--really starts escalating immediately after Cinderella-ish with Kyoko's backstory and Kyo's nightmare from chapters 90-93. I also understand that Cinderella-ish was Se2E23, and with only 2 episodes left in the season, it made sense from a directorial standpoint to end with the Kureno/Akito reveal versus Kyoko's backstory and Kyo realizing he needs to know his place.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But without this context, it leaves moments like the flower scene from Se3E2 less impactful--like a lava cake made by someone who skimped on the filling. To an anime-only (and even as a manga reader), it's likely still a satisfying moment to watch: we know that Tohru clearly has a lot of inner turmoil following her conversation with Kureno. Kyo's turmoil following his nightmare, however--and overall, the sentiment of him thinking he needs to stay away from Tohru, yet still finding himself drawn to her above all odds--is deeply diminished.
Which leads me to the main reason (finally, sorry) that I wrote this post--Se3E6, or the episode when Tohru finally admits to herself AND to Rin that Kyo has taken the place of her mother as the most precious person to her.
In the manga, Se3E6 is made up of chapters 107, 108, 109, AND 114, spanning the end of volume 18 through the beginning of volume 20 of the TokyoPop mangas. Volume 19 in particular is one of my all time favorite mangas in the entire series for one clear reason: just as we've seen Kyo get to do in season 2, we finally get to see Tohru slowly own her feelings for Kyo, and MY GOD, is cutting into that lava cake and enjoying that delicious filling satisfying AF. The Mutual Pining Idiots are in full swing here, both dealing with inner turmoil but also being unable to stay away from one another either. In addition, they're dealing with normal teenage awkwardness too, which feels like a bonus topping (would nuts go well, do we think? LOL) to the Kyoru lava cake.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But between the producers adapting Momiji's arc prior to episode 6 AND the producers ending episode 6 with a 2-minute horror movie essentially--AND, lest we forget, none of the Kyoko backstory at this point--we lost essentially all of that satisfying filling.
And again, I understand, only 13 episodes and the producers are trying to make shit work and I do see why they made some of these changes in the overall big picture of things, but I wish it weren't at the expense of Tohru's character development and also for Kyoru, which had been so thoughtfully and delightfully well-developed in the first two seasons.
My biggest issue BY FAR with episode 6 is Tohru's confession to Rin happening before the sheets scene. The producers combined 109 and 114 for the second half of episode 6. In the manga, Tohru is able to openly admit that Kyo is the most important person to her BECAUSE of how he accepts her after she "opens the lid" to reveal the ugly feelings she's been harboring for years about her father. And in the manga, since we have the context of Kyoko's backstory and can see how she nearly committed suicide and left Tohru alone for days, it is gut-wrenching to finally hear Tohru confront and express her trauma in her own words.
The sheets scene is arguably my favorite scene in the entire series. The anime portrayed it beautifully. Jerry and Laura ripped my heart out with their performances. It was a deeply moving scene (even with all of the changes) and the romance and pining was there--but, I hate to admit it, the feeling of cutting into that delicious lava cake to reveal that even more satisfying filling was not.
And now, come the end of Se3E7, we're approaching the climax of the series that we've been salivating for for so long now, the result of all of this inner turmoil and secrets and deep, deep longing for one another--and it almost feels now like the cake was baked too quickly, in addition to being drained of much of its filling.
I was debating waiting to write this until next week after we see how Se3E8 goes, but my thoughts have been swirling about and this clown couldn’t help herself. I'd like to end this post on a hopeful and more forward-thinking note, though, if you've made it this far into my novel LOL.
There is definitely the potential to add a little more about Kyoko's backstory in next week's episode. I also expect that we'll hear more of Tohru's inner narrative and thoughts, which I’m really looking forward to. As several others have speculated as well, I predict that we'll be getting chapters 119-122 next week. Despite it being 4 chapters, everything should happen in sequence (versus with episode 6) and there's a lot of action, so I do feel like it won't feel rushed or disjointed. And while I could see them possibly ending with 121, 122 would be my preferred ending for many reasons (manga readers know where I'm going with this ;P) and I honestly see it fitting best there.
And regardless of what happens, I'm looking forward to eating whatever variety of lava cake is served to us next week.
And at the end of the day, we'll always have the manga, which will probably always be my favorite lava cake of all.
(and now I'm hungry for an actual lava cake)

I’m feeling anxious about Monday so today I’ll break down two of my favorite Kyoru scenes, one is from season one and the other is from season two. I’ll start by analysing them individually and then I’ll compare them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This scene is from episode 10 of season 1. Shigure just confronted Kyo about the possibility of him and Yuki getting along and he spiralled. Kyo then runs away and Tohru follows him.
I’m obsessed with this scene. I love how Kyo’s physical language is screaming fear, it’s like he really is trying to protect himself from an imminent threat.
While talking about this scene, I feel like it is necessary to point out one parallel and one contrast. This scene is very similar to true form in my opinion: Tohru just saw a version of Kyo that might be (and actually is) upsetting or disappointing to her. Tohru admits that she did want Kyo and Yuki to be friends but she also says it is okay for him to hate Yuki, just like when in true form she said that she was scared of how Kyo looked but she wanted to be with him regardless of that. Kyo is very conscious of the way he is and the way he acts and Tohru keeps providing him with what he needs: unconditional acceptance.
Another thing I like about this scene is how Tohru goes down to Kyo’s level before starting to speak to him. This scene in set on valentine’s day, and Kyo just met Kagura (who’s also the one who started the discourse). Kyo and Kagura’s relationship started on a very unbalanced dynamic, since Kagura felt superior to Kyo from an early age because of the fact that he’s the cat. There’s a clear contrast between Kyo’s relationship with Tohru and his relationship with Kagura, because the first one was even from the very beginning. They’re always on the same level. They could’ve tried to depict Tohru like an angel who came from above to give Kyo what he needed most, but that’s simply not how their relationship is and I love that.
Last thing I have to point out about this scene is how far from each other they are. They’re close but not as close as in true form for example (where we get the hug): here they still don’t know and understand each other that well. I think the anime (and of course the manga as well) did a great job in showing how their relationship developed on a physical point of view.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We’re on episode 16 of season 2 and this scene is just adorable. Tohru just came back from the Sohma estate and she’s worn out and upset because of the things she learned, so much so that she goes on the roof.
I interpret her going there as a way of asking for Kyo’s comfort since she knows very well he loves to go there. In this scene they are very close, they’re wearing their pyjamas and just look like two people who are extremely comfortable around each other. I love how distressed kyo looks when he thinks that Tohru might like someone, and how he brushes it off and stops showing her his eyes. Then he says the famous line (and lie): “if you do find someone...I’ll be there to help you out”. I am obsessed with the concept of Tohru’s body displaying feelings she doesn’t know she has. She starts crying without knowing why.
Here is the moment where I start talking about Iwami (tohru’s japanese voice actor) and don’t stop. She’s perfect for the role. When Kyo says that one line, Tohru says “okay” and you can hear the sadness in her voice while she does, and then, when kyo says he wishes for her to stop crying, Iwami delivers the same exact word in such a different way. Tohru is a really repressed character and she’s great at hiding her feelings, Iwami is great at delivering changes in her tone.
I love how the scene ends with a close-up of the starts, since the recurrent theme in this episode are wishes.
My last note is about the ost, I’m usually not a fan of music placements in Fruits Basket but Momiji’s violin in this scene was a great choice both thematically (he’s playing birth of wishes) and because it simply fits really well. I just wish the volume wasn’t so high...
I love seeing Kyo and Tohru’s relationship develop, and these two scenes definitely show that very well if you compare them. Kyo has become much more gentle with her, and she’s slowly starting to be confronted with just how strong her feelings for him are. They’re so close, comfortable and open (even against their own will in a way, but that’s just how strong their feelings for each other are).
They really invented mutual pining...

Fruits Basket Hiatus - Day 132
Questions by @immaanimationnerd
Question #132: What are your top 10 favorite episodes in the entirety of Furuba so far?
When we say “entirety” of Furuba, I take that as the 2001 anime also. So some of my favorites that are listed are going to be from the 2001 anime, as well as the reboot.
10. I’m So Sorry! (2019)
I love Ritsu so much! While I loved how the 2001 anime did it, nothing beats the 2019 one for me now. Ritsu, like me, is a panicky people-pleaser; if we think we’ve offended someone, we are freaking out trying to apologize and make things right.
Tumblr media
9. Here Comes Kagura! (2001)
While I love the 2019 version of it, nothing beats the 2001 version for me. That one is so full of comedic timing and funny animations, that it never fails to make me laugh. My favorite part in the episode doesn’t even have anything to do with the main characters. My favorite scene is when Kagura was storming out at the end, and the paper boy just gracefully comes in and says, “Hello! It is I your ever reliable local paper boy come to deliver the news of the day!” It gets me every 👏 single 👏 time 👏.
Tumblr media
8. A New School Term Starts! (2001)
Just like the Kagura episode, this is a go-to comfort episode for me from the 2001 series. So many comedic moments that get me every single time. Makoto Takei is still one of my favorite secondary characters due to his hilarious outbursts.
Tumblr media
7. A Solitary New Year (2001)
The only reason I like this one better than the 2019 version is because of the comedic animation. The 2019 version is BEAUTIFUL, but the 2001 version is COMICAL. It’s episodes like this that make me miss the innocent Shigure that wasn’t manga accurate.
Tumblr media
6. See You Later (2019)
I love this one because it shows how far Yuki and Ayame have come in their brotherly bond. Plus, I love Yuki’s character growth showing that he is learning little by little that he has a right to say what he feels and believes to be best for him. I also love the scene between Mayu, Shigure, Tohru for her conference. The interactions between Mayu and Shigure make me laugh so hard.
Tumblr media
5. You Will, I’m Sure Of It. (2019)
I mean, come on......... You know it’s because of the Kyoru moment! 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Tumblr media
4. It’s Cinderella-Ish (2019)
Since I had read this in the manga before even thinking there could ever be a reboot, this was one of the main parts I wanted animated. Even if it was for a short OVA or something, I had always dreamed of this being animated. The only thing we had that remotely close was the Drama CD which I didn’t know existed till about 2 years ago. Now, we FINALLY have it in it’s beautiful glory!
Tumblr media
3. The Adult's Episode - Ayame's a Messed Up Snake! (2001)
The 2019 Ayame is great, and I wouldn’t trade him for the world, but the 2001 Ayame will always hold a special place in my heart. The animation in this one will always be my favorite.
Tumblr media
2. My Precious... (2019)
This was also a part in the manga I always wished would’ve been animated, and now I have it. I cry every time I watch this one because of the sincerity of Kyo’s love for Tohru. This boy deserves so much happiness, and Tohru is just that for him. 😭❤️
Tumblr media
1. Let’s Go Home (2019)
This one always holds the biggest spot in my heart (at least until we get that one thing that’s supposed to come close the end of the manga). The true form arc is what drew me to the Fruits Basket franchise in the first place, so of course it’s my favorite. I’m so thankful to the 2019 version making this a special moment between Kyo and Tohru just as the manga does.

Here’s me trying to stay out of discourse after the influx that came with discussing Kagura a few weeks ago, but here I am with more takes. I can’t help it when it comes to Kyo though. I’m way too passionate.
Some of ya’ll informed me about those anti Kyo/Kyoru posts and asks. It genuinely was upsetting to see. Which does feel awkward to say because this is a fictional character. It’s not like they’re insulting my mother lol. It is admittedly a bit hard when it’s my favorite character that I love so much. But I’m not saying that everyone has to love him. Not when we’re all drawn to different characters for different reasons. That’s what makes opinions interesting. However, calling him a douche, dick, and asshole was a little much but I digress.
The biggest thing that had my stomach turning was the “If he changed in the manga because he loves Tohru then that’s bullshit” and, as I said, opinions are fine even if they differ from mine but this...this is just straight-up not factual. I don’t know if they read the manga or haven’t and have only heard he changed and assumed it was because Tohru fixed him. I hope it’s the latter because if it’s the other, we did not read the same manga.
One of the best things about this romance is that Tohru didn’t change him with her love. I’ve read so many books with that trope and, believe me, I hate it. It’s unrealistic and a toxic way of viewing a relationship. There’s a lot of evidence that shows that that’s not what prompted Kyo to grow. He even states it in episode 9 of season 2, “She didn’t take up all of my pain. She didn’t fill in all the brokenness. But those weren’t important. The most important thing was that she stayed by my side.” Tohru never actively guided him to change. She never told him what to do or corrected him when he was wrong. And her love never changed him. What it did do was help him cope.
Kyo was so bogged down with insecurities and sorrow that he needed someone to just simply be with him and be his light. Tohru was able to do that and there’s nothing wrong with that. She listened to him when he needed to let his frustration and pain out there and just gave him a shoulder to cry on without saying “okay here’s what you must do to get over this.” Because that’s not like Tohru anyway. She’ll only give words of encouragement and let others come to their own decisions. Mutual support is anything but toxic so to put it simply...I’m confused.
Yes, Kyo was temperamental and mean before but he grows. We need to see a character start at rock bottom to see their growth. Is he rude to Tohru at first? Yes because he’s not used to interacting with other as he admits in episode 2. At least he’s self aware and knows he needs to fix this. And he does just that. He tries his best to reign in his temper throughout season 1, having slip ups now and then, but he’s human. I wouldn’t expect any character or person for that matter to go through years of constant hatred then suddenly pull a 180 and become a nice person all the time. Realistically, it would be a gradual process of change as they work to better themselves.
He had also been through so much trauma and yeah I know “you can go through trauma and still not be an asshole” but here’s the thing, trauma effects us in different ways. We may keep things bottled in and put on a fake smile, like Yuki, or show our frustration outwardly and take it out on others, like Kyo, but both reactions are valid. I wouldn’t want someone to remain a jerk forever even though they’ve had a hard life. I don’t think that’s justifiable of their actions if they use trauma as an excuse to be a horrible person. But if they’re actively trying to change like Kyo is doing and recognize their faults, I don’t think there’s anything wrong that. Most of us don’t like how our trauma has shaped us into what we are today, but we can strive to fix that. That is Kyo’s journey.
I know he’s a fan favorite and the ppl who hate him are so few so I’m really not that triggered lol. Just a tad bit disappointed especially since I feel like the way this person described him was so far removed from the Kyo I know but one person’s opinion isn’t going to derail me. I just wanted to give my viewpoint to anyone who thinks he’s toxic. I know some think he is based on the fact that he hit her during the true form arc but that was the only time he ever physically hurt her and it was during a moment of weakness during an anxiety attack. He never hurt her again after that. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that either.
Anyway there’s a viewpoint from the other side for anyone who it might interest. *mic drop*

This has been my favorite episode of s2 so far, like holy crap. The pacing, the music, the direction, I loved everything about it. It was really some of the best of furuba in one episode. The kyoru moments, the Rin intro, the Yuki moments, Akito being Akito everything was just fantastic. Those last 10 minutes were amazing all around. I really don’t know what else to say because I’m just processing the whole thing. Next week they animate my favorite chapter in the manga. I hope they’ll do it justice. Thanks for tuning in and see you next week!!

yona and furuba?
thank u!! akayona favorite character - yona second favorite - hak, but special shout out to yoon for being number three, and i think he deserves more love least favorite character - this is a stacked list but yuhon sucks the most i think.  the character i’m most like - yona? probably favorite pairing - hakyona least favorite pairing - it feels... weird to ship kija and jaeha when they call each other brothers favorite moment - FAR too many to choose. but special mentions go to: yona giving hak the pendant, hak’s confession (and the hhb peanut gallery), the entire scene where they name themselves the happy hungry bunch, lili’s gay awakening and yona reading soowon to filth in front of his men rating out of 10 - 10/10 i desire more animanga like it
furuba favorite character - tohru... i love you second favorite - MOMIJI MY SON least favorite - akito can eat my sock. shigure too. character i’m most like - momiji, for sure favorite pairing - kyoru, no competition least favorite pairing - really don’t trust people who ship tohru with hatori. he is a handsome anime sadboy but he’s in his late 20′s and i will be his manic pixie dream girl instead, thank you. i am 26 and he can call me favorite moment - again, too many to choose. hatsuharu showing a stranger his dick? hatori’s complex over his zodiac form? tohru and kyo sharing one braincell and being terified of jason the bear? almost cinderella? momiji Living to cause problems on purpose (especially for kyo)? hanajima insisting that she’s going to fuck kyo’s dad just because it makes kyo squirm?  rating out of 10 - i hate to keep giving things 10/10 but like, furuba, man. i have rose colored glasses. it was my middle school manga. and the reboot is SO GOOD

🖤 - Relationship / friendship you wish we could see more of?
HJSKSK PART OF ME WANTS TO SAY KYORU BECAUSE I'M ALWAYS STARVING FOR KYORU CONTENT but also Shigure and Akito! Their relationship is one of the most interesting and painful ones in the series (and that's putting it lightly lol) and I hope to see the new Fruits Basket continue to demonstrate the tension and suppressed love between them (which has been done excellently so far in my opinion!).
🐕 - What's a moment in the series that you consider peak comedy?
Anytime Shigure and Ayame are in the same room. Period.
🌿 - Favorite character who wasn't included in 01?
Okay this is cliché af but Kakeru and Machi. I just love them and the dynamic they have with Yuki sm!

Fanfic Tag Game
I was tagged by @purple-and-red-ribbons Thanks! I'm honored!
Author Name:
Music Chick on FFN
Fandoms You Write For:
Digimon - Adventure series.
I've been itching to jump into the Fruits Basket fandom long before the remake came out. I just keep having these ideas for Digimon. I may start juggling between the two! I love me some Kyoru
Where You Post:
So far, only FFN. I've been meaning to create an AO3 account to cross-post. Need to find the time to do it 😅 But hopefully soon.
Recently, I wrote 8 humorous drabbles of the original Digidestined, post Tri events, that are all interconnected to each other, and posted them here on my Tumblr. They can also be read out of order.
Until I get around to posting them on my FFN page, they can be found HERE.
Most Popular One-Shot:
To date, it's When Least Expected: A Christmas Story. It's a Sorato and heartfelt. Little tidbit, I had sudden inspiration, and wrote it in about 3 hours 😎
Most Popular Multi-Chapter Story:
Can I Keep You? is the most popular by views and reviews! It's also a Sorato in the Romance/Angst genre.
Favorite Story You Wrote:
Hard to say because I like them all lol I guess, at the moment I have 3:
1) Can I Keep You? (Sorato)
2) I Will Always Find You (Taiora)
3) When A Man Loves A Woman (Sorato)
How Do You Pick Your Titles:
By if there's a line I want to stick out that's used in the story. For the chapter titles, after I've finished writing a chapter I'll see what the main theme was and use either a song title, nursery rhyme, common saying, etc
Do You Outline:
I'm more of a pantser. You know, fly by the seat of your pants kind of girl.
I'll have a center idea/theme. Then, I'll figure out a basic idea for beginning, middle, end and any special moment(s) I want included.
After that, I "disappear", and let the characters take over. I find this helps me stay creative, and it's yet to fail me.
How Many of Your Stories are complete:
11 out of 12
In-Progress:
1 out of 12.
I've been stuck on the last chapter of He Said What? (a Takari fic) for years. I think I finally figured out how to end the writer's block for it and hope to finally have it up and over with soon.
If you want to take a look and have your heart broken with a cliffhanger until then, be my guest right HERE. 🤪
Coming Soon:
There are two multi-chapter fics I've been mulling over for about a year. A Taiora and a Sorato. Both are Romance/Angst.
Not sure I can promise them out any time soon, but they def are in the works.
Do You Accept Prompts?:
Nah
Upcoming Story You’re the Most Excited For:
The Sorato fic I'm working on is loosely inspired by a personal experience, so I can't wait to hear everyone's thoughts about it!

8/9!!
8- Favorite manga chapter: there is no finer piece of art in existence than the Sorta Cinderella chapter. What magnificence. I laughed so hard I cried. Takaya is a genius for what she does in that chapter, how the characters are all SO bad at staying in character and project themselves into their roles. I am beyond excited for this to be animated. It also has an endearing kyoru moment as a cherry on top. But all around it is just wacky and fun.
9- From ‘01, Ayame’s introduction ep was amazing, and I loved the ep where kyo cooks for flu ridden Tohru, the conversation they have in her room is so SO sweet when i rewatched it recently i was blown away because i didnt remember kyo being so kind and open with her. From the reboot so far, i think it is a tied between Hatori’s back story and ep 5, when Tohru leaves Shigure’s house. I cried during both, also smiled like a fool and had my heart warmed and mended and made whole again because the found family concept could not have been done better, tohru’s flashback with kyoko was heartbreaking, and the scene between her and kyo , the VAs did such a good job. That one definitely takes the cake.
thank you for the ask!! loved answering.

hello my name is *yells about Furuba*
I dunno what I’m doing but I have Feelings so let me rant about them, by me.
Some of y'all may not know that Fruits Basket is my favorite series on the planet– well you do now. That comes with a caveat of favorite manga, not favorite anime (that honor goes to either Noragami or Chihayafuru, with Madoka Magica as an honorable mention). I do also love the anime dearly! But comparing them is like apples and oranges, horses of different colors, etc etc, not least because the anime was made before the manga was barely halfway through. futile hope springs eternal for a full remake. So most of my feels rant will be manga-centric although the general feels apply to the anime, and uh there may be spoilers idk it’s been out for a long time???
The first volume came out in the US five days after my *deep breath* 15th birthday. I got it for the next year’s bday present from my big sis, aaaand that was when the gates of otaku/manga hell swallowed me up (I was somehow unaware that Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh were also Japanese pop culture, go figure.) I have no memory of how I found the anime– my anime-bittorrent-whateverthefuck knowledge was nonexistent but I don’t think it was airing live. I got the box set for some Christmas but that would’ve been after I was a massive fan so *shrug*
Anyway I watched the dub first and holy hell if I wasn’t planning to marry Yuki Sohma before then I definitely was after that, thanks Eric Vale. (I still have huge love for the dub cast fight me). Yun-chan was my first 2D crush and tbqh I’m still in love with him. Also I stg he’s the whole reason why pretty boys are a Big Thing of mine. And wait omg Shigure’s first appearance?! Like, that’s probably why dudes with glasses are also My Thing wow I just blew my own mind but moving on
Fun fact I couldn’t choose between Kyoru or Yukiru bc they were both cute (present me@young me: u will realize eventually grasshopper) but I was 100% cool with Kyoru happening because of course then I could be with Yuki. Cue me dabbling in a few paragraphs of self-insert fic.
uh lemme cut this it’s becoming a novel
Random things (this whole thing is random wtf):
I was blessed enough to get my hands on the entire Tokyopop run, plus the fanbooks!!! before they shut down. I’ve been warring with myself for ages over whether to start collecting the Yen Press specials but. my resolve is weakening. I also have all of Takaya-sensei’s other stuff yeet (Phantom Dreams, Those with Wings, Songs to Make You Smile) except for Twinkle Stars which I’m def gonna get and OBVIOUSLY THE INSTANT FURUBA ANOTHER COMES OUT IM GRAB meanwhile if I remember to check out the scans
been a while since I reread it(it’ll be my third one~) but off the top of my head some favorite arcs etc are: obviously the major one at the end of vol 6. The Red Cap. Hatori and Kana (RIP ME) The Summerhouse (Jason the bear jfc). Akito’s reveal. Kyoko and Katsuya’s entire thing obviously (EXTRA RIP ME I’m crying just thinking about it). “The plum on your back” scenes. Kyo and Kyoko. THAT FIRST NEW YEAR’S WHEN YUKI AND KYO RACE BACK TO THE MAIN HOUSE BECAUSEtheir girlfriend MY DAUGHTER IS SAD AND LONELY AND THEY MAKE WISHES ON THE ROOF heck me upppp– also literally all roof scenes (karate kid Tohrutm) BUT THAT ONE HHGBNCCSV!!! Also my fav episode along with the AU-ish final 2.
Furuba fandom is my biggest fleet of ships by far which is hilarious bc I have a lot of fandoms and a lot of ships and you can see them bc i’m a derp but since nobody looks at that and nobody will read this (?) I’ma talk about them here. I DO WANT I WANT YO
but seriously I support
literally all the canon ships except HanaxShishou, pardon me Takaya-sensei but why. Wtaf.
a metric fuckton of non-canon ships bc of COURSE I DO
my low-key ships include
MomijixKagura. pairing the spares if you will XD
KaguraxTohru
RinxTohru. yes I have bi Tohru headcanons mmkay
Future!Kisa/Tohru (blame this fic)
KyoxUo.
YukixHana. all symmetrical-like (but wow i forgot i highkey shipped it for a while until…)
GurexAaya. like, come on. Also poly Mabudachi Trio
MomijixTohru. they’re super hecking cute ok, edging into high-key
my high-key ships include
HanaxUo. ok this??? is a big OTP, and 99% why I’m hella salty over HanaxShishou (at least KurenoxUo had an actual subplot!!). They are Tohru’s adoptive moms and I will forever protec (and yet. HanaxTohru and girls OT3 are also Good Ships but tbh super low-key) also I MADE SOMEONE SHIP IT
YukixTohru. see the start of this post way up there somewhere
KyoxYuki. my first rivalshiptm
HaruxYuki. “He was my first love” one cannot simply– have a character say this and not expect fans to ship. Also bi Haru is canon. lotta bi folks up in here imo
KakeruxYuki. CUTE GODDAMN DORKS WOW
But my flagship, my OTP to end all OTPs and my polyship to end all polyships in any fandom is the SS Yukyoru. KyoxTohruxYuki.
I’ve had polyship predilections for 6-7 years now, though it’s more recent I’ve started polyshipping every love triangle i encounter bc I‘m so done with them… there wasn’t really any lightning-bolt moment when I realized I shipped them much more together rather than apart. but like, I ship all three permutations so at some point my brain went HERE’S AN IDEA which tbh is how a lot of my polyships happen, i mainly have OT3s (if I ship 2 outta 3 there’s a good chance ima poly it)
but anyway! there’s absolutely no way to convey how much I adore this ship and IT’S A HUGE EMPTY YACHT I NEED CREW MEMBERS PLZ
I am building it up one fic at a time and if you’ve made it this far and have any interest at all plz read my shit and general Furuba screaming is appreciated as well of course!!! (also look at the most beautiful piece of fanart ever)
More fic! have my mixed bag of bookmarks (Sure For The Axis is my absolute fav, 2nd is Little Prayer) u can also find my Yukyoru stuff on AO3 ehehe~ and oh look HanaxUo!
and holy whoa i’m done. TLDR FURUBA IS THE BEST MANGA EVER AND YUKYORU IS THE PUREST RARESHIP EVER
THANK YOU AND GOOD NIGHT

9 and 11!
thanks cool grey bud!!
9: favorite episode?
oof good one!! im gonna be answering these based on the 2019 ver, which im currently two eps behind on ;;sweats; but my fave so far is ep 8!! because it shows that tohru, even tho shes always puts on a super happy front, gets her sad and reminiscent moments as well, and that kyo and yuki can put their differences aside to show that they care for her. even tho akito is super duper scary, they still choose tohru over the banquet. it also showed how great friends uo and hana are?? hana intercepting the soumas to remind them of tohru and uo calling in the middle of the night to make sure that tohru is okay?? i just love how heartwarming this whole ep is, and it always makes me happy that tohru has such good people surrounding her.
11: favorite canon ship?
kyoru!! i recently watched something with the PERFECT quote for tohru;; ive been really wanting to make a gif for it but im going to have to wait another week or so…. ughhhh

Fruits Basket Hiatus - Day 21
Questions by @immaanimationnerd
Question #21: If you’re a kyoru shipper, rank your top 5 kyoru moments so far!
😻🍙😻🍙😻🍙😻🍙😻🍙😻🍙😻🍙😻🍙
I think by now it’s safe to say that everyone who follows my account knows I’m a HUGE kyoru shipper. I live, love, and will go down with this ship. There’s so many moments I could list, so it’s hard to just pick 5! I’ll try though!
5. Kyo comforting Tohru on the roof
One big reason I love this is because it was Tohru who was on the roof first. I know in the show Once Upon A Time, they make a big deal about Emma Swan and Regina Mills when they are stressed. Emma goes near the docks, which hints at Killian Jones. Regina goes to the woods, which hints at Robin Hood. In this case, Tohru goes up to the roof when she’s stressed, which makes us think of Kyo. I just think it’s a sweet little hint at the ship. Plus, it’s just such a sweet tender moment between the two!
Tumblr media
4. Kyo apologizing to Tohru while she’s asleep.
I feel like this scene doesn’t get talked about as much as it should. Oh man, every time I hear Jerry Jewell say “I’m sorry” in the Kyo voice, I squeal like crazy! It’s just hinting at so much more that will guide the ship to its final destination, and oh man oh man! You can hear the sincerity in his voice as he says it! It’s even animated in a way that just gives me the chills!
Tumblr media
3. Kyo making soup for Tohru when she’s sick
Ever since I first watched the 2001 anime, I loved this scene! It was very sweet to see Kyo go out of his way to help Tohru get to feeling better. The 2019 definitely stepped up in its animation technique! It’s just a sweet way to show that he isn’t all about fighting.
Tumblr media
2. Tohru being there for Kyo in his true form
I talk so much about this scene, so I won’t babble to much about it. It’s one of my all-time favorite moments because it’s where I think the biggest turn in Kyo and Tohru’s relationship happens. I just love the dialogue throughout this whole ordeal. You can just hear the desperation in both their voices, and it makes the scene all the more meaningful.
Tumblr media
1. Kyo’s love confession (in his head)
I mean, come on! How could it not be listed as number one?! All of Kyo’s dialogue in this episode just makes me squeal in delight and desperation because I’m so ready to have this couple officially happen in the anime! I just love hearing Kyo be all mushy and talk about Tohru in such a sweet way. It’s what I dream and wish I could have!

Can you do a onesie fic? 😁
I don’t know if this is the same anon who requested a onesie fic earlier but if it’s not, I hope you catch this too. Anyway this is a Kyoru onesie fic. 💓 Hope you enjoy~
Title: It Makes Me Happy
Rating: T
Words: 1,284
Tohru came home from work, tired but ready to make dinner as it was part of her usual routine. She shouldn’t have been too surprised by the ruckus. You never knew what you were going to find when you entered the chaos that was Shigure’s house. But that made her home exciting to her.
Within the kitchen, she could hear Kagura giggling and Kyo yelling profanities. That was nothing new. However, he sounded really distressed and that worried her. She put her school bag down by the door and entered the kitchen. Kagura was still laughing and squealing while Kyo stood across from him in...an orange cat onesie? Tohru nearly fell over and swooned. The boy she’d been unconsciously crushing on for ages was before her in such an adorable getup.
She smiled, clapping. “Oh my goodness, Kyo-kun. You’re so cute!”
He turned around, his face redder than she’d ever seen it. That was saying something because he blushed a lot.
He opened his mouth to speak but no words came out, but his fangs did. He quickly turned his gaze away from her and muttered a “Dammit” as he ran out of the kitchen and out the front door.
Tohru turned, finding him already gone when she did. “Ah, wait! Kyo-kun, don’t go!” Guilt hit her since she laughed at him. She remembered when Yuki told her that guys don’t like to  be called cute. What was she thinking? She had offended him.
Kagura cried behind her. “Aw, I just wanted to see what he would look like in one. He doesn’t have to get so worked up.”
“Um...maybe I should go check on him,” Tohru said, and she was happy too.
“No I’ll do it!” Kagura said, on her way out of the kitchen before Shigure popped out from behind the corner and blocked her way. “What?”
The dog grinned in the way that Tohru recognized as mischievous. “Let’s let Tohru-kun handle this.”
“Huh?! But I said I could-”
“Go on ahead,” Shigure said to Tohru, ignoring a whining Kagura. He followed up by whispering, “No one else can get to him like you can.”
Tohru blushed, not particularly agreeing, but she heeded his advice. “Okay. I’ll be back as quick as I can to make dinner.”
She headed back out of the house while Shigure called “Take your time!”
She didn’t know where he went. She hadn’t caught him in time as he left to see where he was going. Maybe the roof? That was his favorite place. She backed away from the house far enough to where she could see the top of the roof. There was no sign on Kyo there.
His second favorite spot to be alone was by the lake in the forest. That was her best bet. She made her way there through the forest illuminated dimly in the twilight. As she peered through the tree trunks and branches the closer she got to the clearing, she saw his outline hunched beside the water.
She maneuvered out of the forest and as she got a clear view of him, she found that he had removed the onesie. It was thrown beside him. He only had his cargo pants on. No shirt. Her cheeks heated, and she tried to compose herself before facing him. She breathed in and out deeply then approached him. “Kyo-kun,” she cooed.
He jumped, snapping his head back to see her. “Geeze…”
“Oh no, sorry I scared you.” She frowned, tucking in her skirt behind her before sitting beside him. “I was worried about you so I came looking.”
He sighed and turned forward again. “I’m fine. Just had to get away from her.”
“I understand,” Tohru laughed faintly. “She is a little crazy. I’ll admit. But she really does love you.”
“That doesn’t justify her insanity,” he replied.
She wondered if that’s truly why he ran away. Maybe he was just saying that to ease her. In her mind, she still thought the reason was because she offended him.
She frowned again and fiddled with the hem of her skirt. “Are you sure you didn’t run off because of me?”
He brought his legs to his chest, finally looking at her curiously. “What do you mean?”
She took his naivety as a good thing and sighed. “I thought you ran away because I hurt you by calling you cute in that onesie.”
He furrowed his brows and shook his head. “You would think something like that.” He bopped her head with his fist, and Tohru found the gesture so endearing, it made her smile again. She was relieved. “That’s not it. I ran off because I was embarrassed.”
“Embarrassed?”
“That you saw me like that,” he added. He hid his face in the crook of his arm. “You saw me looking so pathetic.”
Tohru shook her head although he couldn’t see her. “No! You didn’t look pathetic. Like I said, you looked cute! You know how much I love the cat from the zodiac, so when I saw you like that it...it made me happy.” she hung her head, her heartbeat increasing after every word.
He lifted his head, his blush mimicking hers. “I heard you. It’s just my own insecurities getting in the way, you know.” He let out a harsh breath. “And I made you worry for no reason. I’m sorry. I don’t think about the feelings of others sometimes.”
She never wanted to hear him say that again. That was far from the truth. “No, that’s not true. You’re very considerate about everyone’s feelings. Yes, you’ll have slip-ups like that. We all make mistakes. But your kindness outweighs all of that. I swear.” She was frantic to make him feel better, especially when he was upset with himself for reasons that were untrue.
He chuckled. “Only you would say that.”
She found that familiar softness that was so rare on him, and she treasured it. She smiled at him in return. He was always so cute. Not only in the onesie. But at that moment, with the coming moon highlighting his tan skin, he was beautiful.
His attention went to the onesie behind her. “It makes you happy?” He asked.
“The onesie? Y-yes. Because you look adorable in it.”
He huffed as he stood up and picked up the fabric. He slipped it back on, zipping the front and putting on the hoodie with the cat ears.
She stood and smiled wide at him. “Aww.” She laughed and clasped her hands. “Very cute. I wish you’d wear it often.”
He rolled his eyes. “I still think I look ridiculous.”
She hesitated at first before placing her hands at the collar of the onesie upon his chest. “I love it. I love the cat so much.” She looked down so her hair would hide her blushing face. She indirectly told him she loved him. And as she thought about it more, she found it to be true. She loved the cat but more than anything, she just loved him.
“Well...I’ll wear it every once in a while for you,” he said.
When she looked up, she was glad to see his face lit up with a grin again. “Okay!” she giggled. She snatched her hands away after the tension of touching him got too great. “We should probably go back so I can make dinner.”
“Yeah,” he replied, taking her hand which caught her off guard for a moment. He pulled her through the forest. “And so I can chase Kagura off.”
She gripped his hand back, savoring the feeling of touching him. Maybe one day she’d have more courage. But right then, it was enough.

Note
which are the most kyoru centric chapters?
That’s a really good one. I have a few even though I’m sure there are more. It isn’t a surprise that these are some of my favorite chapters. (。◕‿◕。)
SPOILER WARNING
1. Chapter 30
Tumblr media
This one is the earliest i think Kyoru focused chapter. It’s where Tohru gets sick so Kyo cooks for her. Seriously one of the sweetest scenes ever. I love this one because it shows how Kyo is willing to provide for her.
This is so off topic, but one of my favorite book series is A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas. It takes place in a world that has faeries. Some of the faeries develop “mating bonds” with each other and one thing that the females do for the males to show that they accept the bond is cook for them. Although, Kyo is male and he’s the one cooking for Tohru, it always reminded me of that part of the book. In other words, I thought of it as Kyo telling her “I really like you.” ;)
2. Chapter 33
Tumblr media
The entire true form arc is obviously centered on Kyo and his backstory, then later on Tohru comes in to save him. And the moment she begs him to come home has to be one of the most powerful scenes in the series. It’s an unforgettable chapter.
3. Chapter 46
Tumblr media
In this one, Tohru, Kyo and Yuki are thinking about their future after high school since parent/teacher conferences are coming up where they’ll be discussing it. Not surprisingly, it’s a stressful time for all of them as thinking about the future is daunting when it seems so far out of reach.
Tohru starts to cry for Kyo when he tells her that his future will be decided for him and he has no choice in the matter because he’s the cat. He really knows it’s because he will be locked up after graduation, but he obviously doesn’t tell her that.
Seeing her cry over him was sweet. It’s one of the times she showed just how much she worried over him and wanted him to be successful and happy. She’s supported him from the beginning. This chapter focused on Yuki too, but Kyo and Tohru took the spotlight.
4. Chapter 52
Tumblr media
They go to Kazuma’s house to have lunch with him and end up cooking together. I’ve touched on this one before here, but I’ll quickly mention it again. I enjoyed seeing them bond over cooking. It was way too cute. ( ・∀・)
5. Chapter 76
Tumblr media
This is where they take their school trip. It’s also what I think is one of the earliest parts where Tohru realizes her true feelings for Kyo. She’s afraid of him pushing her away and can almost feel him doing so. She ends her inner monologue with “Kyo is special”. dawwww.
6. Chapter 120
Tumblr media
This goes for chapter 119 as well. The last few chapters of the series heavily focus on Kyo and Tohru, understandably because their arc has to be wrapped up. Tohru’s love confession to him gives me chills every time I read it. It may seem out of character for her to be so....assertive. And yet it’s not. Because she’s been building up to this point and she has been developed flawlessly. It was also Kyo’s influence on her, when he told her time and time again to speak up for herself and tell people what you want, that she was finally like “IDGAF what you say I should feel about you or what you did to my mother. I just love you and that’s never going to change.” I HAVE GOOSEBUMPS AGAIN.
7. Chapter 129
Tumblr media
Best chapter ever and every Kyoru fan will probably agree. ;) I can’t even imagine having to wait for this chapter or the last volume in general while the manga was ongoing (because I read it a few years after it was completed.) That would’ve been torture! I’d be like “I wanna see them get together already!!”
The build up to their relationship paid off in the end and the moment they came to terms with how they truly felt about each other was beautiful. Such a stunning scene.
8. Chapter 134
Tumblr media
Their first date! With Hana and Uo chaperoning lol. It was so cool to actually see them go out together as a couple. They also visited her mother’s grave and it’s there where Kyo tells her that he wants her to go with him when he moves to train to take over Kazuma’s dojo. It was a new chapter to their story. 。^‿^。
That’s all I’ve got! 10/10 chapters right here for obvious reasons.
