when you are on a network that puts you on a timeslot that does not allow for explicit sex scenes , how do you emphasize the thread of sexuality being a relevant factor in the protagonist’s journey? divorce-by-incomplete-blade his marriage, before louis met armand, he was in cruising parks when he wasnt with claudia or trying to be a photographer. that is my one critique of this season i didnt see articulated - in that we did not have enough time to see the times in paris louis lived. we hear him speak of familiarity to gordon parks’s methodology [implying that he knows the man or knows of him very well at the very least] and tell claudia in earnest excitement at the dinner table abt the parisian multiracial avant garde. anyways... the cruising park is where armand decides to confront louis directly for the first time after following him & claudia for five months. the physical evidence of photographs cannot be altered so readily, but the story of them remains to be told by the photographer, louis. and what does he tell us?

“pictures are outward evidence, they do not lie, but neither do they tell you a thorough story.”

One Dress a Day Challenge
October: Silver Redux
Samson and Delilah / Hedy Lamarr as Delilah
Delilah's wardrobe is amazing, culminating in the spectacular peacock gown. Edith Head and her fellow designers won a well-deserved Oscar for their work on this film.
This two-piece dress with bare midriff and draped skirt is simple in style but dripping with pearls. The opulent silver fabric and copious jewelry also show how she's living the high life at this point. I've included a close-up showing her beaded hairnet and crown. Also notice the pearls carelessly twined around her shoulder strap.

The only bright spot in MAESTRO is Carrey Mulligan. Cooper's LB is all surface, no substance. Matt Bomer does more in his 5 minutes of screentime than Cooper does in the whole movie.
The movie covers smth like 50 years of Leonard Bernstein's life and even though it namechecks a lot of his achievements, i didnt get a sense of the person at all. Its more infodump than entertainment. There's some lovely camerawork in the b/w part of the movie (first 30 minutes?) but that's about it. Kinda sad that Bradley Cooper cdnt deliver another beautiful musical film like A STAR IS BORN. His instincts were so much better there. This felt like a mess. A powerpoint presentation of a movie.

One Dress a Day Challenge
November: Oscar winners
Samson and Delilah / Hedy Lamarr as Delilah
Year: 1950
Designers: Edith Head, Dorothy Jeakins, Elois Jenssen, Gile Steele and Gwen Wakeling
I've meant to revisit this spectacular dress ever since it first featured in Coeli's picks, and since today was Hedy Lamarr's birthday, this seems an appropriate time. Delilah wears a jaw-dropping array of costumes in this film, each one more sumptuous than the last. Just when you think they couldn't possibly top the last one, she shows up for the finale in this peacock gown!
The cape is lavishly adorned with real feathers. Legend says they were "donated" by the peacocks owned by Paramount Studios!
The costume was part of Debbie Reynolds' collection, and it has survived in remarkably good condition.

Holly Martins is the protagonist of ALL TIME, you don’t even understand…
he thinks he’s the hero in a western
he doesn’t know ANY German
he writes cheap novelettes
he sucks at flirting
he hates cops
he gets an old man killed
he doesn’t know what a crisis of faith is (until it’s too late)
he is NOT coping
he gets bit by a bird
he doesn’t know anyone’s name
he makes terrible jokes
he Cannot Leave
and, most importantly, he is deeply, deeply stupid
