when you are on a network that puts you on a timeslot that does not allow for explicit sex scenes , how do you emphasize the thread of sexuality being a relevant factor in the protagonist’s journey? divorce-by-incomplete-blade his marriage, before louis met armand, he was in cruising parks when he wasnt with claudia or trying to be a photographer. that is my one critique of this season i didnt see articulated - in that we did not have enough time to see the times in paris louis lived. we hear him speak of familiarity to gordon parks’s methodology [implying that he knows the man or knows of him very well at the very least] and tell claudia in earnest excitement at the dinner table abt the parisian multiracial avant garde. anyways... the cruising park is where armand decides to confront louis directly for the first time after following him & claudia for five months. the physical evidence of photographs cannot be altered so readily, but the story of them remains to be told by the photographer, louis. and what does he tell us?
“pictures are outward evidence, they do not lie, but neither do they tell you a thorough story.”
#1949 becomes a gray area bc of the trial script dated to april 1949 .. but alas … i have served my time on that front in s1#yn.#iwtv#iwtv s2#louis de pointe du lac#that smirk is someone reminiscing fondly over their hoochie days..#literally if ur a real fujoshi yk the mc has his womens empowernment free sex life subplot

One Dress a Day Challenge
October: Silver Redux
Samson and Delilah / Hedy Lamarr as Delilah
Delilah's wardrobe is amazing, culminating in the spectacular peacock gown. Edith Head and her fellow designers won a well-deserved Oscar for their work on this film.
This two-piece dress with bare midriff and draped skirt is simple in style but dripping with pearls. The opulent silver fabric and copious jewelry also show how she's living the high life at this point. I've included a close-up showing her beaded hairnet and crown. Also notice the pearls carelessly twined around her shoulder strap.

The only bright spot in MAESTRO is Carrey Mulligan. Cooper's LB is all surface, no substance. Matt Bomer does more in his 5 minutes of screentime than Cooper does in the whole movie.
The movie covers smth like 50 years of Leonard Bernstein's life and even though it namechecks a lot of his achievements, i didnt get a sense of the person at all. Its more infodump than entertainment. There's some lovely camerawork in the b/w part of the movie (first 30 minutes?) but that's about it. Kinda sad that Bradley Cooper cdnt deliver another beautiful musical film like A STAR IS BORN. His instincts were so much better there. This felt like a mess. A powerpoint presentation of a movie.
#maestro#martin scorsese#steven spielberg#were producers! can u believe it!? why didnt they cut the script down to a proper narrative instead of a collection of moments from his lif#bradley cooper#carey mulligan#i felt so bad for her character and i felt nothing for Bradley's portrayal of LB coz it was so superficial#skin deep? prosthetic nose deep?#i'm generally neutral about BC but i did think he did a stellar jb of acting and directing the other musical#A STAR IS BORN#and i have seen previous versions of that film and it really holds its own#oh and btw youd think that liking classical music wd make me more sympathetic to prolonged scenes of him conducting#i am tempted to say it was self indulgent but i also get that if u r the director & the main character longer shots can come across that wa#bradley excelled at being a drunk in ASIB but cannot do justice to Bernstein here#should hv cast someone else 🤷🏻#matt bomer does more with his 5 lines of dialogue than bradley does with whole script!#come to think of it theres a day dream sort of sequence that *is* self indulgent - Bernstein dances as if he's in the film ON THE TOWN 1949

Holly Martins is the protagonist of ALL TIME, you don’t even understand…
he thinks he’s the hero in a western
he doesn’t know ANY German
he writes cheap novelettes
he sucks at flirting
he hates cops
he gets an old man killed
he doesn’t know what a crisis of faith is (until it’s too late)
he is NOT coping
he gets bit by a bird
he doesn’t know anyone’s name
he makes terrible jokes
he Cannot Leave
and, most importantly, he is deeply, deeply stupid
#i love him SO much - it’s unreal#he is everything to me#if i had to pick a favorite character in the film it would probably be Anna#because she has some of the most raw and unhinged lines i have ever heard that break my heart into a million pieces every time#but i saw some Holly slander the other day and i will NOT stand for it#he is TRYING and he is FAILING and that is PERFECT#the real mystery of The Third Man is how much trauma can one man go through without processing a single ounce of it?#stay tuned till the end to find out!#the third man 1949#holly martins

🦋 ⇢ share something that has been on your heart and mind lately
My favourite story from my thesis research, which I think about all the time:
In February 1947, Evgeniia Ginzburg was released from Elgen, a camp in the Kolyma gulag system in Siberia. By this point she had served a 10-year sentence, split between several different camps and villages — this was a common experience for gulag inmates —, during which she worked for a time as a nurse under Anton Walter, a Crimean German doctor and her future husband, in the village of Taskan, 22km (13.6 miles) from Elgen.
So on the day of her release, she calls Walter — sentences were often unexpectedly extended at the last moment, so she needed to let him know it had actually happened so he could come pick her up with a horse and sleigh borrowed from his boss and take her back to Taskan — and he tells her there's a blizzard coming in, that he's arranged lodging for her for the next three days and he'll come get her as soon as it's over. And it's Siberia, and the middle of winter — but she's been in prison for ten years, and the sky still looks clear, and the distance isn't anything she hasn't walked before.
The blizzard sets in when she's maybe halfway there. "It conveys a feeling of man's primal defenselessness," is how she would describe it in her memoir, two decades later. "You are indeed naked on the naked earth." It's freezing, and dark, and she has no idea how far she's walked or how far she has left to go — and she's been alone on the path all this time but suddenly there's someone walking towards her. And it's Walter, because he'd only managed to speak with her for a handful of minutes through the terrible reception of the camp phone that cut off half their words but he knew she wouldn't stay in Elgen, not even for another three days, and he came to get her.
#it's from ginzburg's memoir “within the whirlwind”#she got arrested again in 1949 then released when stalin died (happy stalin death day btw)#she and walter got married i believe before her second arrest (he worked in kolyma but wasn't actually an inmate)#and they adopted a daughter who went on to be an actress

One Dress a Day Challenge
November: Oscar winners
Samson and Delilah / Hedy Lamarr as Delilah
Year: 1950
Designers: Edith Head, Dorothy Jeakins, Elois Jenssen, Gile Steele and Gwen Wakeling
I've meant to revisit this spectacular dress ever since it first featured in Coeli's picks, and since today was Hedy Lamarr's birthday, this seems an appropriate time. Delilah wears a jaw-dropping array of costumes in this film, each one more sumptuous than the last. Just when you think they couldn't possibly top the last one, she shows up for the finale in this peacock gown!
The cape is lavishly adorned with real feathers. Legend says they were "donated" by the peacocks owned by Paramount Studios!
The costume was part of Debbie Reynolds' collection, and it has survived in remarkably good condition.

Release: March 7, 1988
Lyrics:
Do you want to ride?
Baby, let me tell you
I've been watching you
See you dancing in my dreams
Feel you heartbeat inside of me
So if you feel it coming on
Catch me getting in the mood
Boy, I'll give you anything
Cruising's all you have to do
Do you want to ride in my Mercedes boy?
Tell me what you're gonna do with me
'Cause if you want to ride in my Mercedes boy
There are so many things that I'm gonna do to you
Oh Baby....
Baby, let me tell you
I've been wanting you
Always on the scene good looks and more possessing all of me
So when it starts to coming on
Catch me getting in the mood
Boy, I'll give you anything
Cruising's all you have to do
Do you want to ride in my Mercedes boy?
Tell me what you're gonna do with me
'Cause if you want to ride in my Mercedes boy
There are so many things that I'm gonna do to you
Do you want to ride ?
Do you want to ride in my Mercedes boy?
Tell me what you're gonna do with me
'Cause if you want to ride in my mercedes boy
If I could reach the stars, I'd pull one down for you
Shine it on my heart, so you could see the truth
That this love I have inside, is everything it seems
But for now I find, it's only in my dreams
Do you want to ride in my Mercedes boy?
Tell me what you're gonna do with me
'Cause if you want to ride in my Mercedes boy
There are so many things that I'm gonna do to you
