How old are you?

I'll go first, I have a copy of this thing from when my grade school obtained access to a mystical thing called "THE INTERNET".

There was literally a time before search engines where there were so few websites online that you could catalog them in a single 600 page book and sell that thing to people as a way to advertise new sites. I think the last copy of this was over 1200 pages long and then they gave up trying to catalog them. 🤣

This is funny (voice of childhood experience, I seldom ran with scissors, but I frequently used them ... let’s say inadvisedly) and for that reason the Accent of My Homeland makes it even funnier.

@dduane sat in our rental car and watched something similar happen to me when we were crossing the US-Canada border many years ago. 

She thought the Canadian immigration officer had found something wrong with my passport, instead of which the officer was a fan of my books and had found something wrong with one of them.

It was a continuity glitch in “The Horse Lord” which, until then, nobody else had mentioned.

“Nobody else” included the author, test-readers, agent, agent’s reader, UK publisher’s editor and copy-editor, US publisher’s editor and copy-editor, four foreign-language translators and every single fan who wrote a letter or spoke to me at a con...

The glitch was this: the Hero puts on his sword - and a page-and-a-half later, another character notices that it’s hung on the wall. :-P

In my defence, the phrasing COULD imply that noticing had taken place before the putting-on, but lack of clarity meant it really was a bit of an Oops, and the publisher’s reluctance to do any re-typesetting Just For That meant it took YEARS to fix...

Yellow Pages

I remember when I was a little girl, I was living with my grandmother, and I used to miss my mother so much because I'd go weeks without hearing from her. After all, she had changed her phone number so much. Back then, there was this big yellow book called the "Yellow Pages," and it was a phone directory with practically everyone's phone number, from businesses to personal cells. I remember flipping through the pages every day, hoping to see her name so I could finally talk to her and tell her how much I missed her and wanted to see her. I'd look for her name every day, over and over. I would repeatedly go down the same page with the letter of her name in case I missed it. My grandma would always tell me to stop looking because it wouldn't be there, but I had so much hope that her name would just start glowing in the book one day, screaming, "Please call me. I miss you too, baby." Obviously, that never happened, and I just started thinking that maybe she didn't want to see or talk to me. It felt like she was running away and hiding from me. Like a game of hide and go seek, except it felt like she never wanted to be found. Every time I did get ahold of her new number, it would be changed within the next month, and I was back at square one with no number and no mother. As I write this years later, we still have zero sense of a mother-daughter relationship, and it still hurts so bad. Especially now around the holidays when you need family the most.
