QX Gaygala 2023 blev ett tjusigt 25-årsjubileum med stora känslor, överraskningar och uppträdanden som lyfte taket.

Det blev en fantastisk kväll när QX-galan fyllde 25 år i början av februari. Sissela Kyle ledde galan för 8:e gången, men det här var även hennes sista, Gaygalamormor har nämligen gått i pension nu sa hon från scenen. Årets QX-gala började stillsamt och vackert då Omar Rudberg sjöng ledmotivet från Young Royals tillsammans med en kör, samtliga iklädda Hillerskas skoluniformer. I slutet av låten delade sig kören och Edvin gjorde entré på scenen och gick fram till Omar. De kramade om varandra till publikens jubel och Edvin ropade ut ”Välkomna till Gaygalan 2023”. Och vi var igång!

Som vanligt blandas humor och allvar på galan, Sissela hade ett sylvasst manus som Edward af Sillén och Daniel Rehn skrivit och drog ner skratt på skratt från en heltänd publik. Hon slog sig ner i Christer Lindarws knä och undrade om de verkligen hade fått fast på den där kobran som rymt från Skansen och sjöng en ny text till Pärleporten till hbtq-nominerade Andreas Wijk, ”han har öppnat garderoben, så att du kan komma ut”.

Sissela berättade om svenska hjälten Julia som bor i Oslo med sin flickvän och som övermannade terroristen som sköt ihjäl två personer utanför en gayklubb i Oslo på midsommarafton. Julia välkomnades in på scenen och hyllades stort av en publik som gav henne kvällens längsta applåd.

På scenen fick vi även en artistkavalkad med bland andra Molly Hammar, som även vann pris för bästa låt, vi fick besök av Zara Larsson som började med att sjunga duett med sig själv i låten ”Uncover” från Gaygalan 2013 för att sedan framföra nya singeln ”Can’t tame her”. Sanna Nielsen gav oss melloklassikern ”I’m in love”, medan Medina fick taket att lyfta med sin ”In i dimman”. Men mest jubel av alla fick ändå damtrion Hanson, Carson, Malmqvist när de gjorde entré och framförde ”C’est la vie”.

Mian Lodalen tilldelades QX Hederspris och blev inte bara galans gladaste vinnare utan mest överraskade vinnare då vi inte meddelat henne i förväg, sekunderna när hon insåg att hon skulle få Hederspriset var magiska!

Sveriges nya dragmamma Robert Fux delade ut priset Årets Drag och sa bland annat ”Glitter är mod, glitter är kamp, och kampen är inte över på långa vägar”.

Petra ”September” Marklund gav oss ett sjukt snyggt hitsmedley som fick varenda kotte på fötter. ”Snickar-Björn” som kommit ut som Lee hyllades stort för sitt mod och delade ut Årets Tv-program till Young Royals medan Årets HBTQ delades ut av Benjamin Ingrosso och gick till Edvin Törnblom som tackade den äldre generationen gays för allt de gjort i kampen för hbtq-rättigheter.

Sedan stod hon bara där på scenen, Leila K, feat Jessica Folcker och framförde ikoniska ”Electric” och varenda gäst på Cirkus dansade sjöng och skrek i extas. En av många överraskningar vilket blivit lite av galans signum genom de 25 åren som den funnits.

Fandom terms glossary

I am aware that we talk a lot of nonsense and that many of the things we say must sound like we are speaking in tongues to the uninitiated, so I have put together a wee glossary of some of the more useful and some of the more chaotic terminologies in the hopes that at least one person will find something helpful within

PD - Punchdrunk; TBC - The Burnt City; SNM - Sleep No More; TDM - The Drowned Man

WM - White Mask (noun); because we simply cannot be typing out " a u d i e n c e   m e m b e r " every single time we want to shout out a cool loop buddy or discuss interesting flocking behaviour or just make it really clear we're talking about punters rather than employees

WM - White Mask (verb); for when a performer or other employee is watching the show as an audience member, for example: "I saw Milton WMing the Zagreus loop, I laughed to myself every time he took an unnecessary shortcut"

BM - Black Mask; because it would be EVEN WORSE to have to type out "member of the FOH team or backstage crew" every single time we want to sing the praises of these deeply integral and yet purposefully-mostly-invisible heroes

(FOH - Front Of House; queue wranglers, box office team, cloakroom crew, bar staff, stewards, everyone with a job that's to do with keeping the audience happy and organised as opposed to keeping the show itself running)

Red/blue casting - there are two basic casting configurations, the red cast and the blue cast, because this is a full-on three-hour dance show with no interval. Punchdrunk therefore make sure the performers alternate between travelling characters and resident characters so they don’t burn out and die from playing someone like Apollo or Iphigenia eight times a week. Once you learn who’s who in each cast, it gets easier to predict who you might see in which roles at any given performance, but because people sometimes go on holiday, or get injured, or pursue other short-term projects, or just like to mix it up, it is never completely possible to predict who you will see in any given role on any given night (apart from Hades, who is usually Sam Booth, and Furnace, who is almost always Sam Parker; go on HOLIDAY, Sams)

(NB: when people say a show is looking a bit purple, that means the cast list is more mixed up than the usual blue/red+covers+swings, and some people are playing the roles they wouldn't usually be playing for that night's performance)

Red cast - a small selection of point characters to watch out for to tell if it's a red cast show: Agamemnon (Rob), Iphigenia (Lou), Apollo (Seirian), Hecuba (Kat), Polydorus (Jordan), Orpheus (Naomi)

Blue cast - a small selection of point characters to watch out for to tell if it's a blue cast show: Agamemnon (Jon), Iphigenia (Fern), Apollo (Georges), Hecuba (Emily), Polydorus (Ferghas), Orpheus (Cristina)

Swing/(cover) - the swings are a small but mighty army of performers who have no fixed schedule and are able to play up to eight different roles each to cover holidays and other absences. Where we have taken our other terminologies from Punchdrunk directly, “cover” is my own term for people like Milton and Omar, whose entire job is to cover the resident roles on other cast members’ regular shows off without having to tap into the army of swings. Covers are a little more predictable than swings, as they play fewer roles and are pretty likely to be performing in the majority of shows in a week; swings are impossible to predict unless you have insider knowledge. Some performers are in the red/blue cast pattern and are able to play a couple of additional roles besides so might occasionally swing into one of these other roles, just without being referred to as a swing; some performers (MITCH) are only regularly scheduled for one of the two colour casts so will always be swinging if they’re performing on another night

Travelling character - a higher-intensity role, often (though not always) dance-heavy, often (though not always) seen moving between Greece and Troy. Performers usually get one show off per week in addition to no-show days, and this generally will not fall on a day when they are scheduled to be playing their travelling role. If you prefer Big Story to supporting players, follow a travelling character: Hades, Persephone, Artemis, Apollo, Hecuba, Cassandra, Polydorus, Polyxena, Polymestor, Agamemnon, Clytemnestra, Iphigenia, Aegisthus, Neoptolemus, Patroclus

Resident character - a lower-intensity role, less likely to be dance-heavy, less likely to be seen moving between Greece and Troy. Performers usually get one show off per week in addition to no-show days, and this generally will fall on a day when they are scheduled to be playing their resident role. If you prefer low-level weirdos to major players, follow a resident character: Macaria, Luba, Kampe, Eurydice, Zagreus, Askalaphos, Kronos, Laocoön, Oracle, Watchman

RD - rehearsal director; mostly there to keep an eye on the performers and performances. They rehearse with new performers, they rehearse with established performers in new roles, they rehearse with established performers in established roles in new scenes, they watch the show to identify any areas that might need tightening up, they get final say over whether a performer is ready to take audience members for 1:1s, and they even perform in the show (either semi-regularly like Lily and Omagbitse or as needed like Sarah, Natalie and Eric). If you ever see a familiar-looking WM carrying a notebook, congrats! You’ve spotted an RD in the wild!

C1 - Contract 1, 22nd March 2022 to 8th January 2023; C2 - Contract 2, 11th January 2023 to currently unconfirmed (and not even strongly rumoured at this point but nonetheless suspected by this individual blogger to be due some time in September) 24th September 2023 (😭😭😭)

Walk-out - when a performer takes a WM by the hand, leads them out of the finale, and removes their mask for them at the end of the show. There are variations on the theme but that's the basic shape for all of 'em

Walk-through - when a performer takes a WM by the hand and leads them from the Troy finale to the Mycenae finale

Shopty - there was a party back in the days of TDM. If your ticket was for both the show and the party, then it had SHO+PTY printed on it. Just a portmanteau for show+party, the nickname has stuck even if the tickets don’t have the shorthand on them anymore

The Souk - there's an off-limits area behind Ciacco's and Hades's house that was labelled as the Souk on PD's original planning documents. This area is inaccessible to audience members and unlikely to ever be opened up, but it does occasionally come up in conversation so it's not not useful to have a name for it

Chaos casting - generally refers to a show that has a greater than usual number of swings performing, which makes for a greater than usual number of exciting new performance choices to watch, but can also refer to the idea of a performer taking on an unexpected role

The Expendables - there are a few characters that the show can function without, so when there's just not enough cast members around, these are the first to be cut. They are (in order of most-to-least likely to be cut): Eurydice, Kronos, Askalaphos, Laocoön, Oracle, Luba, Orpheus, Peep host, Persephone. Yes, the show can function and has functioned without PERSEPHONE. Also, shout-out to that one performance where the usual ‘two Peep hosts + Orpheus’ trio was Literally Just Lily, what a show that must have been!

Lonely X Show - mostly just Zagreus, tbh, a Lonely Zagreus Show/Loop gets a special name because his story so strongly revolves around Eurydice that it's a rare and fascinating treat to see what he gets up to when she isn't there. Though that said, there was also once a Lonely Hades Show, and I would pay VIP prices for the opportunity to witness that for myself one day so PD should definitely consider revisiting that some time

Ghost loop - when a character is missing for whatever reason, but you follow their usual path around the space anyway, guided only by memory, sound and light

Lilydorus - once, back in the mists of last November, the online cast list announced we were due to have Lily play Polydorus. They chickened out in the end but the idea of an incredibly unusual piece of chaos casting has stuck with us since, and a Lilydorus is therefore a piece of casting that is so unusual that you'd be more inclined to think it a data input mistake than a genuine debut (which it almost certainly is, but you're still going to hop on a train and book a last-minute ticket while speeding your way to Woolwich just in case)

Peeple - a Wordle-type game which picks up the performers from the daily online cast list and lets you test your casting skills by having you list who you think each performer is playing at that evening’s performance

Swingo - when you have seen a swing play every character in their repertoire, you have achieved swing bingo: Swingo! Some people like to impose additional rules for themselves, like they must have had a 1:1 from the performer, or they must have been walked out by the performer at least once, but I just play by the bare minimum “followed for at least one loop per performer/character combo (and yes loop 1 counts)” rules

Team Kronos - there are no real rules for being a member of Team Kronos; you don’t need to have followed him a certain number of times, you don’t need to have had the 1:1, you just have to dig his vibes. Anyone who wants to can declare themselves a member of Team Kronos (I suspect that some performers who have played this role would not count as Team Kronos members)

Fuck it, had some more ideas for the Clem and the Olympians AU

The St. Johns are either Cyclopes or Laistrygonians, I haven't decided which yet.

Everybody's least favorite shows up! It's the Stranger! I imagine he'd be the father of a now dead demigod (Maybe a Roman one? Just to allude to Camp Jupiter earlier than PJO canon) and he runs into Clementine while she's on her first or second quest and decides she's a good enough replacement. As you can imagine, it would not end well for him.

Lilly and Lee's ill fated quest happened a good fifteen or so years before Clementine came to camp. Lilly remained bitter about how poorly it went for about ten years before Kronos started whispering to her.

Clem may have an extra three years to worry about the Great Prophecy, but that comes with the downside of being nine when Lightning Thief occurs.

I'm thinking about making Jane's sister one of the Big Three? Maybe she's the daughter of Zeus that got turned into a tree and Jane's her nomadic half sister from a different god? idk

If Heroes of Olympus were to happen, it would be ten years after the Great Prophecy and AJ would be one of the Seven.

I thought about making James or Minnie and Sophie Hades kids too, but I kinda prefer only child Clementine. #3 (Sing A Song of Seven)

Fandom: Percy Jackson and the Olympians Rating: Gen Genre: Angst Characters: Michael Yew, Lee Fletcher, Apollo A series of Cabin Seven oneshots.  This time: Funeral lament. This, apparently, is what happens when I listen to the same song on repeat, especially when one of the singers manages to completely evoke Michael when I hear him in it... (Omar Cardona, specifically his acapella singing alongside VoicePlay in The Dragonborn Comes, for the curious). It was only ever a matter of time before I started bringing some angst into this series... The song lyrics used in this are the only Ancient Greek lament I could find words to - Song of Seikilos. It was a song every child of Apollo knew, and the song they always hoped they would never have to perform.  Cabin seven had duties, responsibilities that most of the time didn’t feel too heavy, but sometimes felt like the sky crushing them beneath its inescapable weight.  Their job was to be the camp’s light, to perform and amaze, to heal, and often they loved it.

But sometimes it hurt.

Traditionally, it was the responsibility of the head counsellor.  Lee had sung the lament for camp more than once – quests had dried up years ago, but there were still funerals, still new campers that didn’t make it despite the healers’ best efforts, and there was always at least one every year.

Lee was a musician, a flautist first and singer second but with a voice befitting a child of Apollo regardless.

Had been a musician.

Who was supposed to sing the lament when it was their head counsellor wrapped in a golden shroud?

Michael’s throat was tight, a lump lodged in it that had materialised at the sight of crimson-streaked dark blond and hadn’t abated since.  Officially, they didn’t have a head counsellor right then, too soon to even think about naming a successor, but Lee had been prodding him since the start of the summer, reminding him that it was only another year until he was off to college, and Michael knew – the whole cabin knew, if not the camp – that he was next.

In the absence of an official head counsellor, the lament could fall to any of them – the one with the best voice, the one who could hold themselves together in the face of insurmountable grief long enough to perform.  They all knew Joy fit the requirements the best, the best singer in the cabin, and she’d even stepped up during the preparations, gesturing to herself with a face of fragile determination – but her eyes were filled with unshed tears, and Michael knew he couldn’t say yes, couldn’t do that to her.

Traditionally, it was the responsibility of the head counsellor.  Michael wasn’t the official leader just yet, and he had never taken the limelight at campfire singalongs, not the greatest fan of singing where he could be heard despite the fact that he, too, was a son of Apollo and had a voice to match, but his siblings were crushed enough by the sudden, brutal loss of Lee (and the other deaths, yes, but it was Lee in his mind, in their minds, the brother that had always been there and whose sudden absence seared like a the first echoes of a phantom limb).  He couldn’t shy away from this, push the shattering, grief-ridden, responsibility on the cabin that was now his to lead, to protect.

The son of Hades led the proceedings, dressed all in black and too young, but they were all too young.  Grieving head counsellors gave short words about their fallen siblings; Michael didn’t even know what he managed to say about Lee, before Pollux fell apart trying to talk about his slain twin and the shrouds were set to torch.

No eyes were on Michael as he stepped forwards, away from the security and comfort of his siblings and into the responsibility that was the head counsellor of cabin seven’s – his, now, and it felt wrong stepping onto the same patch of bare earth he’d watched Lee take so many times, and Emily before him, but also it was for Lee, and Michael would never forgive himself if he faltered now.

No-one ever looked at the singer at a funeral.  All eyes were drawn to the flames, rising higher and higher as the pyres burned, watching the final moments of bodies whose souls were long gone to Hades’ realm.

Michael knew the song.  He knew the words he’d hoped to never sing, and drew in a deep breath, feeling it waver, before the words began to spill out.

Hóson zêis, phaínou Mēdèn hólōs sỳ lypoû

His voice threatened to crack, the tell-tale feeling of a break starting in the back of his throat right where the lump held fast as tears welled, determined to overflow.  This was for Lee, for the first sibling he’d grown close to, for the first person that wormed his way past the terrified prickly shell of an abused child and slowly coaxed Michael into learning to trust in family again.

The break didn’t come, his voice strengthening when it should have – would have – faltered.  Warmth spread across him, invisible but impossible to miss, and the feel of a weightless hand covered his shoulder.

The tears spilled down his cheek, even as his voice held steady, imbued with a strength that wasn’t his.

It was a short lament, too short to only sing the once when there were several dead and grief prevailed across the sobbing campers.  He let the last strains of the final word fade away into silence before starting it again, letting the warmth carry his voice, keeping it strong and stable even as Michael himself felt like he was falling apart.

Slowly, as surreptitiously as he could manage – for how little it mattered when no-one had eyes for him, when the burning pyres drew every eye, including his own, with no remorse – his own hand crept up to the epicentre of warmth on his shoulder.  It only met air, falling down on his own camp t-shirt with nothing in the way, but he’d expected that, even as it shifted until it felt like his hand, too, was being enveloped by the weightless, invisible, not-really-there one.

Once the funeral was over, once the pyres burned to ash and nothing was left of the bodies and shrouds borne upon them, when Michael’s throat rasped from the words and tears for all that his voice kept going, his siblings would join him and all eyes would be upon them as the lament faded and songs of joy and celebration, uplifting sounds to counter the grief took their place.

Michael couldn’t spare his siblings that – it was a cabin-wide responsibility, for all that he didn’t know how they were supposed to sing of joy when their hearts had been torn in two – but at least, this time, he’d spared any of them this moment, standing alone and small against the onslaught of grief, both the camp’s and his own, fierce choking emotion.

Well, not quite alone.  Michael’s hand flexed where it was encased by the comforting, supporting warmth of the sun, and stood a little straighter, head a little further back, as he repeated the lament once again.

Ya twisted my arm (jk). But a Aemond x oc story starting from slightly from the perspective of her mother. Some details that I think would be hades x persephone coded

- house [redacted] (I’ll think of a name lmao) is a stormlands house made up of our oc (I like the name annora but I also like having flower motif) her two younger sisters and brother, and her parents -Johanna and Omar

- their sygil is a narcissus blooming through rain. It sort of symbolizes how their house sits in the intersection between the reach and stormlands/dornish marshes. Much of their wealth comes from being around extremely fertile area and what grows there. Let’s say both team green and black go there (over house Baratheon) based on that wealth

- random but i sort of like the idea of house Baratheon feeling a bit slighted that Aemond didn’t come to their house. they are like daeron will marry whoever as a conciliation prize (daeron slays but you know what I mean)

- Aemond specifically came there for annora. Johanna instantly gets #bad vibes. Not even just the obvious war thing but just the way Aemond is looking at her daughter is NOT sitting right with her. So, she lies and says her daughter is betrothed to another. Omar, completely oblivious, is like no she isn’t????

- now I go back and forth between if this Aemond is charming enough to put the rizz on annora. On one hand, I think both book and show aemond have to work themselves up bc of insecurities. But ngl something about that probably bs account, bc it’s from mushroom, of book Aemond kissing all the Baratheon girls lives rent free in my head. Like why would he do that 😵‍💫😵‍💫

- a hot prince shows up on a dragon saying he wants to marry you, there is only one answer. She’s here for it. Johanna pulls Omar to the side and is like ummm our daughter could be essentially a war prisoner. Now I don’t think Omar is a bad dad, he loves his kids. But do I think he’s super smart? Probably not lol. He sees baby targs with baby dragons. He thinks about tides changing and stormlands houses swearing fealty to them

- the luke stuff happens in front of them. Johanna is mortified, annora is still like “but mom, he took his eye of course he wouldn’t like him ☹️”

- now I kind of like deviating from the book and show in the sense that no one really knows what happened to Luke. Pieces are arrax do not wash up. Did he die on accident? Did Aemond/Vhagar kill him on purpose. Did luke runaway? Who knows. Obviously people think Aemond did something but 🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️

- they still get married despite Johanna pleading to her husband to not let this happen. Annora and Aemond have a traditional westeros faith of the seven wedding BUT and here’s the kicker. Aemond wants a Valyrian wedding as well. I really don’t care about whole blood binding thing (If y’all want to pretend she has distant Valyrian blood go for it). I just like the idea of the blood being a similar motif as the pomegranates.

Anyway I don’t want this to be too long. Just in case I’m a glutton for punishment and actually do this. But yeah it spirals from there. Aemond descends further into madness as people think he is kinslayer. He probably puts a lot of energy/obsessiveness into his relationship bc of it. Very much ‘but you don’t think I’m a murdering psycho right baby 🥺’ while cleaning off his sword of blood. Johanna just wants her daughter back… it’s a mess y’all.

TBC #6-11 9-13 May 2023

I am jetlagged and don't have the time or the brain to write up anything beyond some bullet points, so here goes:

I spent almost as much time at Dial Arch as I did in the show. This is not a bad thing, especially when there are friendly British fans and friendly performers and crew about. Imperial pints, yay! UK spirits measures, boo.

The VIP was worth doing once. Subtle references to the Eleusinian Mysteries on the kykeon bottle, nice. I don't know what the spec is but basically it was a drink for people who don't like whisky--mostly pineapple and other fruit flavors, presumably with some Dewar's in there somewhere. The museum/hallway scenes with Yilin and Sam put some nice flourishes on the Persephone storyline.

The three high points of my shows were these: 1) a Full Persephone with Lily, managing both X:1s and the Elysium coda. 2) a new-to-me Hades 1:1 with Sam, which brought new meaning to the word "underworld." 3) Fania bouncing back and forth between queen of Troy and queen of Mycenae.

Other things I knew that I'd enjoy, and did: seeing Ingrid on as Cassandra and the Watchman. Spending a loop in Peep with Lily and Isaac (I still can't get that stack-of-drawings trick to work, though).

New discoveries for me this time included a bunch of scenes that I hadn't witnessed before, and performers I'd never followed before. Ally Clarke as Artemis, holy smokes, and as Luba. Brenda Lee Grech as Macaria, ditto. Omar Gordon as Luba and then Agamemnon (with Fania/Clytemnestra!).

Thanks to FOH for taking pity on five of us huddled under two tiny umbrellas during a sudden downpour, and letting us into the lobby early.

I think I'm a real connoisseur of the blinding / Troy finale now, although I can't quite articulate the difference between when it works for me and when it really REALLY works for me. It's almost always moving and in fact more of the scenes were moving to me this time--I think knowing the space and the rhythms better meant that I could just get swept up into the narrative more easily. So I was tearing up at scenes both familiar and not. The bit where the Watchman mournfully takes up Iphigenia's red cape and holds it up to a rope as if it were a sail--sob.

There were some other 1:1s and walkouts and such, which don't need enumerating. All of them gifts.

I finally found the Gallow Green postcard and the owl bedroom! The end.

Welp, whether we like it or not, it's the holiday season, and I believe I have been fairly good this year, so this is a list of things that I would most like for Christmas please

- more shows with missing characters, for the opportunity to see how the show carries on in their absence (specifically a Lonely Zagreus Show please, but I'd love to see a Lonely Hades Show too)

- the chance to see my faves in the roles I have yet to see them play (such as Ali Laocoön or Stephanie Macaria)

- the chance to see my faves in roles they have yet to play at all (you *know* this is about Fania Hades but also Ali Aegisthus)

- existing cast members to take on new roles generally (which has already started, and I understand that more is coming, and I'm very excited about it!)

- ideally with just a bit more gender-blended casting in favour of the female performers (Miranda and Maya would absolutely SMASH Neoptolemus and Patroclus and you know it)

- a few more TDM alumni to join the cast (literally all I want out of 2023 is Omar Gordon Agamemnon, ideally with Fania Clytemnestra, but any of the remaining TDM cast would be a delightful addition)

- at least one good production photo or clear video appearance of every character (EXCEPT LAOCOÖN, WE MUST NEVER LET THE OUTSIDE WORLD KNOW THIS CHARACTER EXISTS, purely because it's funny)

- THE SOUK (I understand there are reasons why we will never get this space dressed for public consumption, but I'm still going to dream about it)

- a really great time at the Remix (please no 1:1s!) and the subsequent New Year's party!!!

- and, like, some snacks and a cool keyring, idk

The Burnt City - half growing on me

I've lost count of how many shows I've seen - might be thirteen or fourteen, exceeding my quota of SNM (across both countries). Spoilers follow (sorry, don't know how to do a page break in new Tumblr). .

. Why do I keep getting pulled back? Obviously it's Punchdrunk - that helps. But also the Troy area still tugs on me for its atmosphere and 'PD' feeling. This feels like home territory, reminiscent of The McKittrick in its looping maze of tiny rooms (not to mention the frustration of being stuck behind a crowd in a narrow space), bedecked with an intricate variety of production design. I'm finally developing a feeling of a relationship with the characters, and I've been able to see several performers in the same role. Incidentally is there more chopping and changing among the cast than there were in previous productions? I know of a couple of performers who have taken on eight roles. Anyway, there have been many highlights along the way: sharing a rendition of 'It's a Lonesome Old Town' with Steph's Eurydice, a moment of intimacy better than any 1:1; Miranda's Polyxena dipping her hand to my ear and pulling out a tiny light; two angles on Polyxena's sacrifice (both in the square and from Hades' office); the wonderful goodbye scene between Hecuba, Polydorus and Polymestor, a tender moment undercut by a sinister layer below; the various interpretations of Luba: Steph carefree and flighty, Fania resentful and self-indulgent, Omar full of barely concealed rage; the lovely, joyous dance on the disco floor between Zagreus and Eurydice. And of course the entire Hades/Persephone 'loop', surely the company's greatest achievement. (Speaking of Fania, is there a finer performer on Punchdrunk's books right now? The breadth of talent she has, the way she fully lives inside her character, the range of emotions she's capable of conveying with only a slight alteration in her appearance, that incredible face with its piercing eyes. Having met her offstage I know how sharp a wit she has, how good-humoured she is, and how natural and unpretentious she can be in real life. Miranda will always have a special place in my heart simply for Romola, but Fania is fast becoming my favourite performer to watch.) Being a PD regular, and with so many performances under my belt, it's not surprising that I've had a few 1:1s and they really do help to deepen one's understanding of the narrative. Some have been more successful than others, but that's always the way. For some reason I keep ending up being selected by Steph, a performer who's really growing on me (perhaps because of the 1:1s!). Mycenae.... continues to disappoint. I still can't get past that carpet: I now know it's for the performers' safety and I can't complain about that. But it breaks the immersion completely for me. Most of my other objections to Mycenae from my previous post still stand. Which is a pity, as Agamemnon, Clytemnestra and Iphigenia are fantastic loops, every bit as good as those in Troy. Yet one feels distanced by the enormous space and the lack of intimacy is distracting and unfulfilling. Also - and I'm not alone here - I feel that many of the loops are underdeveloped. While TDM had a few characters who didn't seem to contribute much to the narrative (especially Tuttle and the Dust Witch), nearly all the others were rich and full-bodied all through the loop. In TBC there's a thinness to some characters - Polyxena has nothing much to do after her 'resurrection', Askalaphos doesn't have much to do at all bar a few interactions with other characters where he isn't the focus of attention, Laocöon spends much of his time in his little room, Kronos is very dull, the Oracle is just fetching and carrying, and the Watchman feels aimless. No doubt people will think some of my objections to be entirely inaccurate, but I can only go on the basis of over a dozen visits with most loops followed. Anyway, let's move on from negativity. I feel completely at home in Troy and it's what keeps me returning. And, of course, I can always dip into Mycenae if I want a change (or just a breath of cooler air). I still don't miss the show much after I've been to a performance, but I can say I'm captivated every time I'm in there. Which is all I ask.

What are the best arguments to disbelieve Hadith?

The argument goes like this: if the Prophet left behind a completed Quran that he had compiled, verified, and authenticated, then why did he not also leave behind a Hadith book that he had compiled, verified, and authenticated?

Rather, the Prophet had stated, as reported in the Hadith books:

“Do not write anything from me; whoever has written anything from me other than the Qur'an, let him erase it and narrate from me, for there is nothing wrong with that.” (Narrated by Muslim, al-Zuhd wa’l-Raqaa’iq, 5326)

This Hadith is consistent with the following verse and numerous other verses of the Quran that are similar to it:

"These are Ayaatullahe (‘Statements of Allah’) which We reproduce unto you in original. Then in which Hadees — after Allah and His Ayaat, the people will develop Faith" ( Al Quran# 45:6, Translation- Dr. Kamal Omar)

The Quran contains numerous verses that point to the fact that the Prophet, peace be upon him, left a complete copy of the Quran written on parchment. Therefore, it stands to reason that, had it been necessary, the Prophet would have also compiled the Hadith, just as he did with the Quran; he wouldn't have left this crucial work to feeble humans who are inherently argumentative to be compiled centuries later.

However, the Hadith can be regarded as a source of information about Islamic history and culture at the time of the Prophet as long as it does not contradict the narratives of the Quran. But it shouldn't be used as the foundation for Islamic Jurisprudence or guidance.

Then what, one would wonder, about following the Prophet's example, otherwise known as Sunnah?

God indeed said in numerous verses of the Quran, that requires we only follow the Prophet's example from the Quran. God did not imply that we should follow "Sunnah" from extra-Quranic sources, such as the works of Bukhari and Muslim and others alike, and the scholars, i.e., Imam Abu Hanifa and Imam Malik who claimed that Hadith can abrogate the Quran.

Here are a few more verses that highlight the Quran's completeness and clarity one must ponder:

Surah Al-Ma'idah (Chapter 5), Verse 3: "This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion."

Surah Al-Nahl (Chapter 16), Verse 89: "And We sent down the Book to you [O Muhammad] as a clear expression of the truth for all that it contains and as guidance and grace and good tidings for those who have surrendered themselves to God."

Surah Al-Yusuf (Chapter 12), Verse 111: "Indeed in their stories, there is a lesson for men of understanding. It [the Quran] is not a forged statement but a confirmation of Allah's existing Books [the Torah and the Gospel], a detailed explanation of everything, a guide, and a Mercy for the people who believe."

Contrary to what traditionalists believe, the aforementioned verses declare that Allah has completed His favor upon the believers and completed the religion of Islam without calling for a further explanation of its verses.
