Books I read in 2024
Here is my eclectic and very random-looking read list! The first two images are World Challenge books. I read 27 books and checked off 25 countries for the challenge, for a total of 80 countries read since 2022.
Other than that, I managed to read two Brontë sisters, four graphic novels, one memoir, and a few others I picked up. (Vā is a Pacific anthology even though it's in the graphic novel line) I did more picking up random stuff for the fun of it and as expected got some that were interesting and some meh.
Favorites (in no order):
The Cat I Never Named - fictionalized memoir of a teen surviving a siege during the Bosnian war West of the Jordan - interconnected stories of family members in Palestine, Jordan, and the US in the early 80s Here the Whole Time - A warm hug of a story about two gay teens falling in love while sharing a room and overcoming their insecurities Home is Not a Country - novel in verse about a Sudanese teen longing for a country and a life she doesn't have American Street - intense and realistic story set on the streets of Detroit All Things Seen and Unseen - a unique psychological thriller-ish book with a trans coupling and a disabled protagonist Navigating With You - super-cute sapphic romance about teens bonding over a manga series, also with a disabled protagonist

Robson Square, Vancouver (No. 1)
Robson Square is a landmark civic centre and public plaza, located in Downtown Vancouver, British Columbia. It is the site of the Provincial Law Courts, UBC Robson Square, government office buildings, and public space connecting the newer development to the Vancouver Art Gallery.
The British Columbia Centre was a development proposal slated to be completed by 1975. At 208 metres (682 feet), it would have been the tallest skyscraper in the city (and taller by just 7 meters) than the Living Shangri-La, (which currently holds the record). With the defeat of W.A.C. Bennett's Social Credit government in 1972, the plan was scrapped just as the construction phase was about to begin. Government officials saw this potential Skyscraper as a potential disruption to the current Vancouver Skyline. The New Democratic Party government of Dave Barrett responded to fears of the dark shadow that the building would cast on downtown, and commissioned a redesign from another architectural firm, Arthur Erickson Architects. The reconceptualization Erickson came up with was of a skyscraper laid on its back, the "B.C. Centre on its back."
Erickson biographer Nicholas Olsberg describes the design as follows:
Arthur came in and said 'This won't be a corporate monument. Let's turn it on its side and let people walk all over it.' And he anchored it in such a way with the courts — the law — at one end and the museum — the arts — at the other. The foundations of society. And underneath it all, the government offices quietly supporting their people. It's almost a spiritual progression.

JaBoG.31 Lockheed F-104G Starfighter 26+24 by Wing attack Plan R Via Flickr: Taktisches Luftwaffengeschwader 31 "Boelcke" (Tactical Air Force Wing 31; abbreviated as TaktLwG 31 "B"), formerly known as Jagdbombergeschwader 31 (Fighter-Bomber Wing 31; abbreviated as: JaBoG 31), is a fighter-bomber wing of the German Air Force (Luftwaffe). The wing is based in west Germany at Nörvenich Air Base. Its role are Air Interdiction, Offensive Counter Air and Close Air Support. The wing flies the Eurofighter Typhoon. On 1 October 2013, the renamed unit also became the parent unit of the newly established Tactical Air Force Group "Richthofen". History- The wing was raised during 1957 on Büchel Air Base as Nörvenich Air Base had not been readied yet. On 1 October 1957 the 1st Squadron was officially activated making it the oldest squadron still in service with the German Air Force. During January 1958 the wing began its move to Nörvenich and on 20 June 1958 the wing was officially activated there. On 19 January 1959 Jagdbombergeschwader 31 became the first German Air Force wing to be assigned to NATO. On 20 April 1961 the wing was given the name "Boelcke", in honor of the World War I Luftstreitkräfte fighter pilot Oswald Boelcke. Initially equipped with Republic F-84F Thunderstreak fighters, the wing received Lockheed F-104 Starfighters starting in 1961 and became the first operational air force Starfighter wing on 20 June 1962. With the introduction of the Panavia Tornado IDS in 1979 the Jagdbombergeschwader 31 again was the first unit to switch to the new plane. When the air force began fielding its newest combat plane the Eurofighter Typhoon JaBoG 31. The first four Eurofighters arrived at Nörvenich on 16 December 2009 and with the departure of the last Tornados on 25 June 2010 JaBoG 31 became the Luftwaffes first operational Eurofighter wing. A total of 31 Eurofighters will be based at Nörvenich. Accidents- Since its inception JaBoG 31 has lost 33 pilots in accidents, 18 of which died in F-104 Starfighter accidents. On 23 June 2014, a Eurofighter Typhoon was involved in a mid-air collision with a Learjet 35A over Olsberg, Germany. The severely damaged aircraft made a safe landing at Nörvenich Air Base. The Learjet crashed, killing both pilots. Photo Credit's: Unknown to me (reprint), Taken at RAF Mildenhall, 1969.
