Notre-Dame Basilica in the historic district of Old Montreal, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
The interior of the church is amongst the most dramatic in the world and regarded as a masterpiece of Gothic Revival architecture. Architect François Baillairgé designed the interior decoration and choir 1785-95; facade and vault decoration, 1818.

Commissioned painting for cocktail bar in Old Montreal. My original proposition was to paint an 18th century naval scene, as the old Montreal district is largely the old port area. The client asked for a Kraken painting, to fit the theme of the bar. It became important to me in the execution of the piece to remain in keeping with the idea of an 18th century naval scene, the only other clear direction given from the client’s side was that it somehow be in keeping with the existing branding. There is in the existing branding illustrative elements lifted from late nineteenth century and early twentieth century lithography mixed with symmetrical traced elements produced most likely with illustrator. As most of the aforementioned lithography elements were produced at the time ‘after’ other existing paintings and illustration, I saw no conflict in proceeding with the original notion of an 18th century naval painting, combined with the mythological theme. I decided that the painting must have a reported quality, that is to say that like many paintings of that era there must be elements that the painter (me in this case) was uncertain about; that modern preoccupations with photographic forms of realism be largely avoided in favour of painterly conventions; and that the piece have a folk art quality. I had some notions of researching scrimshaw, but in the end stuck with naval painting, and 19th century lithographs. The strongest theme for me in terms of the narrative became the notion of the unseen and uncontrollable explained through mythology and legend. This works hand in hand with the idea of the reported event transformed by repeated telling. The real destructive forces at sea are the elements and surprise encounters with enemy ships, and they are personified all by the Kraken. The viewer then is both present and absent in the stories, they are simultaneously an observer of the painted scene or listener to a story, and also not a witness to any particular event. In this way the empty lifeboat, not entirely of 18th century origin, is both a symbol of loss, and a symbol of simple absence. When a story told is not true, then the teller relinquishes their own grip on reality at the same time as asking their audience to suspend disbelief. Especially interesting notions in an age when the image is becoming as unreliable as language, an age in which literacy must become even broader and more complex.
