No but in the base game, Gideon breaks upon realizing that to become an Elden Lord it is necessary to fight and defeat the Elden Beast, a God. For all his knowledge, he cannot conceive doing so, and as a result, he ends up trying to stop the player from doing something he sees as madness.

But sir Ansbach and Thiollier do not. They are aware what they are getting into when they join the player to stop Miquella. To go stop a newly reborn GOD. They are painfully aware they do not stand a chance and that Death or worse awaits them. What chances do the depressed young boy and the aged old warrior way past his prime have? But they still do it. Because it has to be done.

And where Gideon dies reinforcing his stone-set belief that "A Man cannot slay a God", Sir Ansbach dies begging the player to become a Lord who serves not the Gods, but who protects mankind. Dying with the belief the Tarnished WILL triumph over Miquella and become Elden Lord
