Shadows of the Yiga | Chapter 8

Talon wasn’t around when Link and Aryll got to the ranch, but they made their way into the paddocks, anyway, each retrieving their favorite horse and bringing them into the barn. The old, battered farm truck pulled up in front of the barn as they brushed and saddled the horses. Talon stepped out, grunting and muttering under his breath as his stiff joints cracked. He stretched his arms over his head, then mosied toward them with his rifle in hand. He spat at the ground before entering the barn, acknowledging Link with a nod and tipping his straw hat to Aryll.

“It’s yer day off, Kid,” he said in a gruff voice. “Fact, shouldn’t she be in school?”

“We’re playing hooky,” Aryll said with a wide grin.

“You know,” Link started, “you’re not supposed to announce it to everyone you talk to.”

Aryll rolled her eyes. “It’s not like I’m telling my teachers.”

Talon smiled and nodded. “Right, then. So, yer cleaning dem stalls afta, hm?”

“Link said I could do it,” Aryll said, still grinning over her horse’s back.

“I dun care who does it,” he said. He thrust the rifle into Link’s arms. “Dem bears ‘ave been out ‘n about, yanno. Shoot ‘em ‘fore they get at my cuccos ‘gain.”

Link shrugged and secured the rifle onto the saddle. It wasn’t the first time he had to shoot a bear or two that had wandered onto the property. Link would have allowed them to take a cucco or two, mainly out of revenge, but it would have only made them come back more frequently, and then he’d never hear the end of it from Talon.

“You trust this idiot with a gun?” Aryll said, frowning.

“If ‘e can defeat the great Ganondorf with a sword, I think ‘e can handle a rifle.”

“He can’t shoot himself in the foot with a sword,” Aryll pointed out.

Talon grinned. “Would you ratha I give ‘im a sword, den?”

Aryll seemed to consider her options for a moment.

Talon slapped Link on the back with a wrinkled hand and tipped his hat at them once more. “‘Ave fun, now.” He shot an invisible rifle. “Shoot ‘em dead.”

“Poor bears,” Aryll said as Talon mosied back into his truck. “All they want is dinner.”

“They’ll eat you for dinner,” Link said.

“Beats peanut butter and banana sandwiches,” she said with a shrug.

They brought their horses out of the barn where they both climbed into their saddles. Aryll took a moment to coo to her horse, reaching down to scratch the gelding’s ears as Link and his steed started onward. Her gelding trotted to catch up to his companion, slowing to a walk as he reached his side. His ears and tail flicked happily as they walked.

They followed the path around the open pastures, along the tree line, and eventually into the woods, where they continued to follow various trails as they twisted this way and that. When the path widened and flattened, they broke into a gallop, racing one another. Most of the time, Link let Aryll slip passed him.

She stood in her stirrups, thrusting a fist in the air and whooping loudly in an attempt to rub her victory in Link’s face.

Before long, the trees thinned, and they eventually stepped out of the forest and into a clearing. Rolling hills stretched out into the countryside of Hyrule and to the horizon. To their right, the land sloped downwards toward a dirt road. Beyond the road lay a thick forest, and the mountain range seemed to spring up from the trees. To their left, the land stretched on until it met the edge of Lake Hylia. The lake was far too wide to see beyond it, but somewhere, the highway stretched over the lake, busy with passing motorists oblivious to the landscape that Aryll and Link enjoyed.

It was like a secret only she and her brother knew about, and it quickly became Aryll’s favorite place to escape to. They often rode out to it, letting their horses stretch their legs, galloping along the ridge of the hills, without a care in the world. It didn’t matter who won or lost; it wasn’t a race, but an escape from their own realities.

This time, however, they did not run away from their lives. Instead, they looked out over the landscape as the horses grazed quietly. A gentle breeze blew through their manes and tails and Aryll sighed. It felt like the first time in a long time where she felt relatively at peace. Despite all that had transpired, she and Link had both come out on top, and she was reminded that over the years, they always did. No matter what life threw at them, they always prevailed, and she felt comfort in that. Link would never let it be otherwise. And neither would she.

She turned to her brother, who was no longer enjoying the peace that came with the view, but instead had his nose in his phone, his fingers flying along the screen as he texted. Aryll took out her own phone, flipping through the filters on her camera until she settled on one with dog ears and a tongue. She held it out at arm’s length until Link was in the picture. He glanced up with an annoyed look on his face, and she snapped the picture.

“Mipha says hi,” Link said dryly as he turned back to his phone.

Aryll glanced at him. “You’re texting her?”

“She called Saturday asking about you.”

She pinched her lips together. “Whatcha talkin’ about now?”

“How many kids we’re gonna have.”

Aryll frowned. “I know you’re being a jerk, but I’d be okay with that.” She watched as he snorted and otherwise ignored her comment, recalling the end of the conversation she overheard in the hospital. Link and Kit were talking about some kind of Yiga Clan. She hadn’t thought anything of it then, or the days that followed, but the more she recalled the moment, the more intrigued she became. It seemed a serious topic, or, at least at one point, but Link had blown it off completely.

“So,” she started, keeping her gaze on Link, hoping to catch a reaction from him when she continued. “What’s the Yiga Clan?”

Link’s fingers paused, but his gaze did not move off the screen. He continued the message after a moment, then slipped the phone back in his pocket. He turned his gaze to the horizon. “The Yiga Clan?”

“Yeah,” Aryll said carefully. “I heard you and Kit talking about it in the hospital.”

His brows furrowed. “You mean his crazy conspiracy theories?”

“I thought the Yiga Clan was real,” she said. “Dad mentioned them once or twice, didn’t he?”

“Yeah, the cult of losers, sure.”

Aryll hesitated. “You said they were rogue Sheikah.”

Link’s gaze met hers. He was angry and suspicious with her. After a moment, he turned away. “They’re nothing to worry about.”

“I don’t know,” Aryll said slowly. “Rogue Sheikah sound like a big problem. What do they want? To bring Ganondorf back or something?”

Link hesitated. “There’s nothing they can do to bring him back,” he said. “Not without breaking Zelda’s seal. And there’s no way to do that without…”

“Without?” Aryll pressed.

“Without the Master Sword,” he said simply. It was the truth, anyway. But he was sure that if it came down to it, they could do whatever they wanted if they had another piece of the Triforce to aid them.

“Oh.” Aryll turned her gaze away. She sensed her brother was hiding something more, but she didn’t press further. “Well, that’s good, then. I don’t want you to be a hero anymore.”

“It’s not exactly a job I can quit,” Link muttered.

“Well, if there’s no danger, then there’s no need for a hero, right?”

Link shrugged. “Sure.”

“You have no sword anymore, anyway,” she continued. “You’d be useless.”

“I don’t need a sword to be useful,” Link said.

Aryll glanced at the rifle on his saddle and bit her lip. “I guess,” she said. “Either way, you don’t stand a chance against a rogue Sheikah.”

“Nope,” he said with a sigh.

Aryll frowned. “Are you sure? That they’re not… a problem?”

Link glanced at her. “Don’t you think if we were in danger, I would have done something about it by now?”

“I guess.”

“Don’t listen to Kit’s shit,” Link said. “The war’s been over for ten years. Everything’s fine.”

Aryll nodded. Of course she was being ridiculous. She got herself nervous over nothing. If the world was in trouble, Link would know about it. And he would fix it.

It was just after noon when they returned to the barn. Once the horses were untacked and back grazing in their paddocks, Link and Aryll turned to the task of mucking stalls and otherwise cleaning the barn for Talon. Talon moseyed into the barn a couple hours later as they were finishing up, and he had his hands on his hips as he inspected the barn with a nod.

“Guess I gotta pay ya for the day,” he said gruffly. “Even though ya came in on yer day off.”

“Nah,” Aryll said with a grin. “I did all the work today.”

“So, I gotta pay you?”

Aryll put a hand on the old man’s shoulder and winked. “This one’s on me since I took your horse out.”

“Ah, he could use a lil’ work,” Talon said. “He’s been gettin’ fat out there on that grass all day.”

“Any time,” Aryll said as she dusted her hands together. “I can drive now. Link said I could take his car whenever I want.”

“The actual phrase was ‘over my dead body,’” he reminded her with a sly glare.

“We’re still working on it,” Aryll said with a nudge to Talon. “Someday.”

“Guess I’ll see ya this weekend?” Talon said, tipping his hat to them. “Don’t work too hard there, Kid.”

Aryll let her brother drive on the way home, and Link opted to stop to treat them both to ice cream sundaes before making it home for the evening. Both of their sundaes were much larger than necessary, which made up for the fact that they hadn’t eaten lunch, and it seemed reasonable enough to label it as their dinner, too, as neither of them would feel hungry for the rest of the night.

When they got home, Aryll plopped herself down on the couch, letting her legs hang over one end as she lay against the couch on one side. While Link busied himself with the mail, Aryll flipped through the channels on the tv. After finding nothing of interest, she let it stay on a channel that had soap opera reruns playing and instead occupied herself with her phone.

Still, nothing on it caught her interest, and when Link finally sat beside her with a sigh, she took his phone and decided to flip through his apps.

“There’s nothing weird on here, right?” she asked carefully. She opened his social media apps, and finding nothing of interest, chose to send suggestive emojis to Revali insead. She then moved on to searching the internet, particularly searching for an obscene image to plaster on Link’s background. After saving to his phone a variety of images, from fat, naked men, to pink unicorns, She opened the gallery to select one to make as his new background. She scrolled through the albums in search for the images she downloaded, but a few particular albums caught her attention instead.

One album in particular seemed to have images from years ago. Some of them included Link and Mipha together, while others ranged from Link and Riju posing with laser guns and Revali flipping the camera both middle fingers. Among these were even a young Aryll, and a few of her and her father together. It seemed even then, she felt the need to steal her brother’s phone and put ridiculous pictures on it.

A particular video caught her attention, and she opened the file to play it. A six year old Aryll held the phone out in front of her, making faces at herself and giggling. It shifted and moved violently as she skipped about the room. Her face returned, and her tongue stuck out at the corner of her mouth as she concentrated. The image on the screen flipped to her father leaning against the counter. He looked up from his phone and grinned.

“Stop playing with my phone,” came Link’s voice from somewhere off screen. The camera turned to her older brother, standing in the doorway, his brows kit together in annoyance. Aryll giggled from behind the camera and the video jolted again as she hurried out of her brother’s grasp.

“Argh!” came Link’s voice once more. “What the hell? Stop it!”

The video spun around, revealing Link’s head in his father’s arms as Rusl proceeded to dig his knuckles into his son’s skull. Link squirmed in a desperate attempt to get out of his father’s grasp.

“You’re an immature weasel!” Link shouted.

“No evidence!” Rusl shouted, throwing his hand out in a playful attempt to block the camera. Link took advantage of his dropped stance and freed himself. He rubbed his head with his hand and frowned as Aryll giggled.

“I think he lost some brain cells,” Aryll’s voice said.

Rusl grinned. “How can he possibly lose any more? There’s nothing in there!”

The camera dropped and Aryll giggled as her father scooped her up, and the video ended. Aryll held her gaze on it for a moment with a smile, then closed the gallery, completely forgetting her mission to plaster ridiculous images all over her brother’s phone. She let it drop to the couch and sat up, pulling her knees to her chest.

“I’m glad you let me steal your phone all the time,” she said. “And you kept everything.”

Link had been watching her at the corner of his eyes. He turned his gaze back on the tv. “That’s not true,” Link said. “I deleted all the poop emoji pictures you downloaded.”

Aryll grinned. “I forgot I was obsessed with those.”

“You were a weird child,” Link said. “It was mildly concerning.”

Aryll threw a pillow at him. “That’s because I grew up in a weird family.”

“For the record, I was completely normal.”

“Yes, because having the spirit of a hero and a magic triangle on your hand is totally normal.” She rolled her eyes.

“And I still managed to barely skate by in high school,” he reminded her. “Totally normal.”

“Totally lazy.”

“I saved the world. How does that make me lazy?”

“Is that on your resume?”

“Right between barely passed high school and college dropout,” Link said dryly.

“Employers must have been throwing themselves at you.” She sighed and got to her feet. “Speaking of passing high school. I do have finals next week I need to study for.” She offered him a crooked smile. “Thanks for today.”

“Sure.” Link watched his sister leave the room. When she was gone, he trudged into the kitchen, pulling a beer from the fridge. He popped the top, tossed the bottle cap on the counter, and dropped back onto the couch to zone out in front of the tv.

Kohga stood on the cliff just outside of the hidden base, overlooking the vast, empty desert. He had heard Dorian’s approach, but offered the Yiga soldier no greeting. Dorian stood a few yards away from the Yiga leader in silence, making no effort to move any closer, waiting for him to speak. And he did.

“The ward remains over the city,” Kohga said. “All these years it has held strong. But I’m not surprised. Even in her aging years, Impa has remarkable abilities.” He glanced over his shoulder at Dorian. “I would have preferred it if you had killed her when I asked, but I can’t say I didn’t understand your resilience. You’ve gathered a lot of intel from within the city walls. And it seems you were right, afterall. My patience has paid off.” He turned to look back out over the desert. “I knew it would be next to impossible to get my hands on Zelda, but it seems Link has finally come out from the shadows, just as I hoped he would. The ward is strongest inside the city. Every time he leaves those boundaries, it grew weaker around him. My men have found him at last. We can finally get our hands on the great Chosen Hero and his little piece of the Triforce.”

“Zelda will look for him,” Dorian confirmed with certainty. “I cannot promise she will be alone, however.”

“I am not concerned about those Champions,” Kohga said, blowing him off with a wave of his hand. He looked over his shoulder at Dorian once more and grinned. “Are you?”

“Of course not.”

“Good,” Kohga said with a nod. “I know you will be able to finish them just as you did Rusl. They will hardly be a hindrance in our plan. It’s only a matter of time before we have the Triforce in our possession. I am confident we will be able to use it to its full potential and revive Ganondorf once more. And I will have much pleasure in turning Hyrule’s Heroes against them.” He turned to face Dorian completely. “You have done well, Dorian. Keep up your appearances with Impa and Roham. Should anything more of note transpire, do be sure to let me know, hm?”

“Can you tell me again, why you are driving alone to D.C. instead of carpooling with Octavia and Niylah? Bellamy is kind of freaking out about this.”

“Bellamy is always freaking out, Clarke. I’m a grown woman and a fucking astronaut. I’m well able to drive for 14 hours on my own.” Raven let out an exasperated sigh and dropped her bag in the back of her Porsche 356 that she just refurbished. She was really proud of it.

“I know Rae. But maybe text him or me every now and then, just so he can sleep.” Clarke said through the phone. “On a different note, I’m so happy you are able to come.”

Getting in to the car, Raven hooked up the phone to the hands-free car kit she installed and pulled out of her driveway.

“Like I could ever miss you idiots getting married! I’ve been waiting for this day since sophomore year of college, Clarkey. So have Octavia, Monty, Jasper, Murphy…hell, even Abby.”

At Clarkes laugh Raven had to smile as well. It was about time for them to tie the knot and she couldn’t be happier for her friends.

“Babe, I have to hang up. My mom and Kane just arrived.”

“Have fun and talk to you soon. Oh and Clarke, tell Bellamy to get himself together!”

After hanging up Raven started playing her road trip playlist, which was basically 80s Rock, almost as loud as possible. She had snacks prepared because it wasn’t a proper road trip if you don’t have a massive amount of Reese’s, crunchy chickpeas and some tostones her abuela had made, sealed tight in a plastic container.

Raven had planned to drive the whole way to D.C. with only one night in a Motel/Hotel/whatever. Clarke had invited her to participate in what she called “the glorious Spa Day before the big Day” before going to the rehearsal dinner the same evening.

With the sun on her face and wind in her hair, Raven started singing loudly to her music as she drove onto the highway.

Zeke never believed in Karma or anything similar but looking up to the sky he knew someone up there was having a field day with this. Probably his grandma, who always had something to say about his Harley. He could still hear her voice in his head: Don’t drive on this machine of hell, boy. Please don’t make your Nana unhappy.

Zeke was understanding of her fear, but he would choose speed over most things.

He walked around the front and looked at the black lacquered engine skeptically. For fucks sake, he was a computer genius and not a mechanic. And if he remembered correctly— which he always did, thank you very much— there was no garage in the last two towns he drove through.

Great.

It wasn’t until he pulled out his phone to call a tow truck for his bike that Zeke realized there wasn’t even service around here.

With a sigh, he sat down on the floor. What in the name of the lord was he supposed to do now? This really wasn’t what Zeke had planned for his road trip through the US and Canada.

Using the Air Force Carrier intermission program and going on this trip offered a much-needed break for Zeke. He basically worked non-stop for the last 6 years and even his Captain told him to take the sabbatical. Zeke loved the thrill of flying and serving for his country but the last two deployments had taken a toll on his mental health.

Sitting here and brooding wouldn’t help his Harley, so he checked his phone again: still no service. So he started walking. Hitchhiking to the next city with a garage it is then.

Raven loved her car a lot. It was powerful (like her), it was black like a Raven (also like her soul…kidding). And the most important thing: she basically made it from scratch. When she bought the Porsche, it wasn’t more than a shell. It had taken her month to find the original seats, because at least her baby should look authentic. But the engine was a completely different story. The way it screamed when she accelerated and, yeah, it felt like the best thing in the world.

She was about to pull into a motorway station with a Starbucks (she needed caffeine like air, don’t judge) when she saw a guy walking next to the road. Upon hearing her (great) engine, he turned around and held out his hand. Thumb raised.

Taking Krav Maga lessons from her friend Echo might have made it safe enough for her to pull over, but she wasn’t stupid enough to let some stranger into her car in the middle of nowhere.

Without giving it another thought, Raven pulled up to the Starbucks and left her car outside.

“Can I get a tall cortado with a double shot espresso, please,” Raven said with a smile and a generous tip in the jar. From her college days, she knew how shitty Starbucks was about paying their baristas.

Her coffee was hot and delicious, exactly what she needed.

As she headed towards the door, it opened unexpectedly; Raven reacted too slowly and bumped into the incoming body.

With every bit of grace she had left, she was able to at least save her coffee from spilling all over her MIT hoodie. The floor wasn’t as lucky.

“Jesus, I’m sorry, Ma’am,”

“Ma’am, really?” was all Raven answered before looking up. Then she stopped. The guy from beside the road was looking at her apologetically, his hands almost reaching her. Nice hands and nice face.

“Well, my mom didn’t raise an imbecile,” he said, looking down at her, as his smile turned crooked. “Again, I’m sorry. Let me buy you a new one as compensation.”

Raven tipped her head to the side, considering his offer. He seemed nice and her very reliable senses weren’t tingling, but she still took her time to decide.

“Well, because you asked so nicely…” Throwing her ponytail back, she started walking towards the register without looking back.

Amused and intrigued, Zeke followed the brown-eyed woman. He tried not to check her out, but she was undoubtedly beautiful. And kind of scary. A dangerous combination for a thrill-seeking kinda guy like him. Despite having never met her, her voice seemed somehow familiar, but he couldn’t pinpoint where he could have heard her talk before.

“Can I get a grande black coffee, no cream and whatever you want?” With a questioning smile on his lips Zeke turned to the woman next to him. But before she could answer the barista interfered.

“You had the cortado with a double espresso, right?”

The woman only nodded, leaning on the counter while Zeke took out his wallet. “Double shot of espresso in a cortado? That’s a lot of caffeine; I’m impressed.”

But she didn’t say anything, and they waited for their coffees in silence.

He wasn’t really sure what to think of her. The way she looked at him, completely unimpressed by his charms was something he never really experienced. Growing up with three sisters he felt easy around girls and he would lie if he’d never taken advantage of it.

Their drinks came up; turning to the door, Zeke made sure to hold it open for her.

After a few steps he realized they were walking in the direction of the beautiful matte black Porsche he had admired before going into the coffee shop.

“It was really nice of you to buy my coffee,” she said kindly, with a nod towards the car, “but I have to get going.”

Shell-shocked, Zeke could only stare at her as she smiled amusedly, turning her back to him and walking away, before getting his shit together.

“Hey, wait!” Zeke jogged over to where she turned over her shoulder to look at him.

“Do you need anything? I’m kind of in a rush and this little incident back there is really throwing of my time plan.”

Raven was starting to get annoyed. Yes, he was cute and kind of charming, but she was still in a rush. It had been hard enough for her to get the weekend off to go to Bellamy and Clarke’s wedding, but driving was cutting it real close to being on time for the rehearsal dinner.

The guy looked like he ran through a couple different things he wanted to say before he settled on, “You wouldn’t know a good mechanic around here, would you?

Slightly confused, Raven looked at him, fidgeting with his coffee but holding her gaze.

“My Harley broke down a few miles back, then my phone battery died,” he explained, “and I need a ride to the next town to get a tow truck…You look like someone who’d know. With the car and all.”

Now Raven actually had to laugh. “Well the best mechanic is in New Orleans and currently on holiday.”

The guy now sighed, looking disappointed. “That’s just my luck, isn’t it. Well, do you know the second best? By any chance?”

Despite his clear frustration with his situation he tried to smile at Raven; she admired that. A quick run through the mental math told her that she could drive most of the way to DC tonight, and still take a look at his Harley.

“I wouldn’t look so crestfallen just yet.” Raven walked over to the driver’s side of her car and got into the car.

“Excuse me?”

With his brows furrowed like that, he was even more handsome than before; Raven pushed the thought away and pointed to the seat next to her with a smirk.

“I’m the mechanic on holiday and if you’re not getting into the car right away I’m not gonna bother looking at your bike.”

He got in the car.

His eyes were wide as looking at her in bewilderment; Raven’s smirk turned into an amused smile as she held out her hand for him to shake.

“I’m Raven.”

Zeke took her hand and was met with a slight spark that send a thrill down his back. Surprised, his eyes shot up to look in her dark brown eyes. Reluctantly, he let go of her hand

Raven… The name made bells ring; he had heard it before and he wasn’t sure when. It wasn’t a common name and it bothered him a bit, not to know.

Then it dawned on him.

“Jesus, are you Raven Reyes? The Raven Reyes? Zero G Mechanic and IT specialist for NASA?”

Raven’s smile faded, and she squinted her eyes at him. Not reacting to his question but instead raising one of eyebrows at him in question.

“Fuck, what a small world,” Zeke shook his head, smiling brightly at her. “I’m Lieutenant Zeke Shaw, USAF. We shared some delightful phone calls regarding the test flights of the shuttle cargo last year.”

Recognition dawned across her face and she tilted her head. “I remember them being not as delightful: your guys weren’t even able to fucking start the damn thing.”

Never in a hundred years Raven would have imagined meeting the cocky bastard she’d had the pleasure of screaming at, after two test pilots almost crashed her shuttle without it even leaving the ground.

“Well, if I remember correctly, your guys didn’t give them proper instructions,” he shot back at her, still smiling.

Rolling her eyes, she started her car and pulled out of the rest stop, retracing her tracks from earlier. “And I screamed at those idiots as well.”

“It’s nice to finally meet you in person, Raven. The programs you coded for those shuttles are amazing.”

Taking a sip from her coffee, Raven tried to hide her smile.

“I am amazing.”

“And so down to earth, too,” he muttered sarcastically.

Her loud laugh seemed to surprise her as much as it did him, and Zeke had never heard a better sound in his life.

While working with her, she had been smart as hell and even more intimidating. He had liked her instantly. It had been hard work to coordinate the test flights while being stationed overseas but Zeke had always been resourceful. The only thing he regretted was not testing the damn shuttles himself.

“Aren’t you supposed to know some basics in mechanics?” Raven asked, pulling him out of his thoughts.

“Well…yes. But a motorcycle engine is different from an airplane engine.” He shrugged unapologetically. He wasn’t the best mechanic and he knew it; he could do far more with a computer and the control systems and his co-pilot was more skilled in fixing the rest. Zeke told her as much.

Raven just huffed. Air Force Lieutenant and not even able to fix his bike. But at the same time, she knew no one could be as great as she was.

“Did you fix this beauty yourself?” Zeke carefully reached out his hand to stroke the cream-colored dashboard of the car. “Or is that something you don’t have time for, working for NASA?”

“It’s calming me down when I get to go home for more than a few hours, so yes. I did. New motor, authentic leather color and a few technical toys here and there.”

“It’s a special car.”

“That she is.” Raven looked at Zeke beside her with a content smile on her lips. She really was proud of what she’d done with the car. It had basically screamed her name when she bought it and now it suited her even more.

They continued driving in a comfortable silence, that had surprised Raven. She had not considered she would feel this relaxed next to a stranger, but then again, he wasn’t really a stranger. Her road trip playlist still blasting over the speakers but on a more humanly volume.

After a few miles, she realized had Zeke started to silently sing to “sympathy for the devil”. For some reason a rush of affection shot through her. It felt really weird, she just met him, but she couldn’t help it.

“You need to go off the highway at the rest stop over there.” Zeke pointed to the next exit, which Raven then took.

She parked her car next to the Harley with raised eyebrows. “I know you said you had a Harley, but if I’m being honest I expected a newer model.”

Zeke just shrugged his shoulders. “It belonged to my father and he loved vintage rides.”

“Good man, your father,” Raven replied while lifting her toolkit out of her trunk.“You’re lucky I bring this with me everywhere I go, otherwise this would’ve been more complicated.”

Zeke casually leaned against the car, watching her take off her hoodie and toss it next to him onto the backseat.

“Can I help you with something?”

He didn’t want to just use her for this and then drive off. It’s not like he’d get a chance to learn from THE Raven Reyes any day, so he knelt next to Raven, who had placed herself in a position where her braced leg was stretched out.

“Hand me my tools when I tell you to and maybe hold the flashlight, will you?” He liked her bossy tone and went to get the flashlight he saw in her trunk.

Raven quickly figured out what was wrong with the bike; she just had to fix the spark plugs and the engine would purr like a cat again. While working on it, she pointed out what was broken and what she had to do fix it, and Zeke who sucked in every bit of information she threw at him.

She hadn’t realized how close his face was to hers until she turned to look at him.

Their eyes met, and Raven felt herself freeze in position, not able to move or look away. His piercing glance made her feel like her blood was about to boil. His breath tingled her lips and she had to fight the urge to lick them.

Zeke wasn’t sure what was happening, but the the way Raven looked back at him had him reeling with expectation and excitement. He had realized how easy she was to talk to back in the car, and her taste in music was immaculate. Without realizing what he was doing, he glanced down at her lips.

Raven suddenly felt as dizzy as a teenager before her first kiss. He carefully leaned in, his eyes never leaving her, checking that this was okay, that she was okay.

Right before his lips touched hers a truck on the motorway blew his horn, startling them both. Raven lost her balance and fell back, stopping the fall with her arms.

Zeke couldn’t help himself; he started to laugh. It came out breathless and a bit ragged. Raven realized then, that she wasn’t the only one affected by their almost kiss. And she couldn’t deny herself the realization, that she would have let him kiss her.

Raven -I’m a grown ass woman who needs no man (or woman for that matter)- Reyes would have let this guy kiss her. What was happening to her?

With a confused smile, she tried standing up, but her leg wouldn’t let her. Damn this. Glancing up, she saw his hand stretched out in front of her, offering to help her up. But hell, if she would let him help her now. He almost kissed her for god’s sake; she could at least spare herself the embarrassment of needing help to get up off the ground.

On her second attempt she made it and immediately started packing her tools.

“Okay, so your bike is good to go now,” she said as evenly as she could manage.

He was watching her now but kept his distance, as if he knew she needed to sort through her thoughts. She snapped the toolbox shut and headed towards her car.

“I’ll see you around, I guess,” Raven tossed over her shoulder as she opened the door. Even as she started the engine and avoided looking at him, she felt Zeke’s eyes on her, and saw his slow nod in her peripheral vision.

“See you around, Reyes,” he muttered to himself, as he watched her drive away.

The incident in the Parking lot with Zeke had rattled Raven more than she liked to admit. And she had panicked, which annoyed her even more. After she had calmed herself down, she called Harper to rant about what had happened. Usually, Raven would’ve called Clarke, but she hesitated— not because Clarke wouldn’t understand, but because Raven didn’t want to bother her right before her wedding with unimportant things. At least, that’s what she told herself.

A few miles after Nashville, Raven yawned three times in 5 minutes and she could no longer deny that she was fucking exhausted. Fortunately, only a bit later a sign for a motel greeted her with its neon lights.

She pulled into the parking lot and went into the foyer of the main building to find the reception. There was a small line before her and Raven tried to hide her yawns from the rest of the guests. As much as she wanted to pretend that she wasn’t, she was still annoyed that she had panicked. Also that he didn’t ask her for her number. Maybe he would have if she hadn’t panicked and sped away? It didn’t matter anyway. She wasn’t going to see him again.

The motel had a room for her and Raven went to take her bags out of her car. As she approached her room, a familiar figure was about to open the door right next to hers. At first, she thought she was imagining things but as his head turned slowly to look at who was coming his way, Raven smiled in spite of herself.

“Are you stalking me, Shaw?”

Zeke just smiled. “I thought you were a ghost back in Louisiana as fast as left. And you can’t stalk a ghost, don’t you think?”

Raven just shrugged. “I was in a rush.”

“Sure, you were.”

Zeke was just standing there looking at her expectantly, but Raven just held his gaze as she had done the whole 2 hours they had spent together that day. Growing impatient with the situation, she walked to her door and started unlocking it.

With her back to him, Zeke didn’t have to hide his smirk. He wanted to kick himself for not asking for her phone number, for not kissing her. But he had reluctantly made peace with himself, that the moment they’ve had was just that: a moment. Zeke would’ve savored it as an experience but now, seeing Raven again so unexpectedly, he thanked fate for bringing him here into this motel.

Right before Raven was able to disappear into her room, he called her name. She turned, expectant, and he took a deep breath and asked, “Have dinner with me?”

Raven just smiled and nodded.

Should You Buy a Used Ford F-150?

Decades and generations of pickup-building expertise culminated in the latest complete generation of the Ford F-150, which launched for model-year 2009 and carried on through 2014. This 12-generation (!) F-150 has moved fully into used-vehicle territory, and a couple-years-old copy may make a compelling used truck for a buyer after big capability on a budget. Or maybe for those loyal Ford truck owners that are apprehensive about the latest model’s switch to an all-aluminum body. The all-steel 12th-generation F-150 underwent numerous changes and updates, in addition to introducing the EcoBoost engine range in the pickup scene, while offering up the latest in connected truck technology, luxury feature content, and safety. The selection was abundant with numerous engines, drivelines, body styles, trim grades, and special-edition packages on offer. This generation F-150 also saw the introduction of the specialized SVT Raptor, which isn’t covered in this used Ford F-150 buyer’s guide. If you’re considering a mainstream version of this generation of F-150, you’ll find V6 or V8 power, two or four-wheel drive, and equipment levels that set the machine up from work truck to posh towing rig, or anything in between. Depending on the year and model selected, feature content may include navigation, Ford SYNC, climate controlled seats, Bluetooth, automatic climate control, premium stereo systems, power-deployed side-steps, and plenty more. Buckle up for the powertrain options: at launch, these included a 5.4-liter V8 with 320 horsepower, or a 4.6-liter V8 with 248 or 292 horsepower, depending on the year. A 2011 overhaul saw the engine range revised with a focus on fuel economy via a newly available 3.7-liter V6 with 302 horsepower, a 5.0-liter V8 with 360, and a 6.2-liter V8 with 411. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 launched here as well, with 365 horsepower and nearly as much torque as F150’s biggest V8. If you’re after a fully loaded unit with all the flauntables, search out a Lariat, King Range, Platinum or Limited model. After something more modest? Check out an XLT or FX4. Like the Dodge Ram, Toyota Tundra, Nissan Titan, and Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra with which it competes, the F-150 battled for the dollars of new and seasoned pickup shoppers with stand-out styling, feature content, capability, and power. Owners tend to comment positively on the F-150’s ride quality, flexibility, and performance from any of the larger engines. Test Drive To-Do List for a Used Ford F-150 #1: Give Ford SYNC a Workout Pair your phone via Bluetooth, plug in a USB drive full of media, and give the Ford SYNC system a workout. Make and take a phone call, plot a navigation destination, try numerous voice commands (press the Voice button and say “HELP” for more information) and otherwise work the system through various functions and operations. Be on the lookout for any stalling, crashing, lagging or poor system performance, as numerous owners of Ford SYNC-equipped vehicles have reported issues from time to time. In many cases, a software update via the dealer or a hard system reset is the solution. If that’s not the case, the system head unit may need to be replaced, which is expensive. Seeking out a model with a healthy SYNC system that’s had all software updates applied reduces the likelihood of frustration and annoyance. #2: Check the Headliner for Sogginess Turn your attention to the F-150’s ceiling liner and be on the lookout for signs of dampness and moisture, either present or previous. Dampness, a mildewy smell, or visual clues of moisture staining on the rear corners of the headliner (or outer edges of the rear seats) could indicate that water is finding its way past a seal in the rear window, or the high-mounted rear brake light. This issue isn’t reported abundantly relative to total sales volume, but is worth being aware of. #3: Beware the Mud Tires and Lift Kit The average shopper is best to avoid an F-150 that’s been modified with non-factory parts for maximum peace of mind. Lift kits, oversized wheels and tires, and other suspension modifications can cause problems, especially if the quality of the parts or their installation is poor. (Unless you’re getting one of those SVT Raptors!) Note that in many applications, lifted pickups will consume more fuel, handle poorly, while the axle, differential, and bushings could wear out faster #4: Check the 4×4 System If equipped, be sure to confirm that the F-150’s 4×4 system works as outlined in the owner’s manual during the course of your test drive. Toggle between all available 4×4 modes, confirming that each engages quickly, and without any warning lights or messages in the instrument cluster. Repairs to the 4×4 system can be expensive, so now’s the time to find out if there’s a problem or issue that the seller would rather you foot the bill for. #5: Feel the Steering Cruise at various speeds down a rougher road or highway, and zero in on the F-150’s front end. A popping sound or sensation possibly felt through the floor near your feet or a vibration could be evidence of an issue with the vehicle’s tie rods. This should be addressed by a technician before your purchase, as it can affect safety, handling, tire wear, and vehicle alignment. #6: Get it on a Hoist A rule of thumb before purchasing any used pickup is to have a technician inspect the vehicle fully on a hoist. Here, a quick visual inspection can reveal signs of suspension damage, leaks, excessive rust, indications that the vehicle has been poorly repaired after an accident, signs that the vehicle has been abused in an off-road setting and much more. #7: Choose an Engine There’s some question as to which engine choice is best for F-150 shoppers from this generation. If you’re after something more powerful than the standard V6, then you’re probably debating between the 5.0-liter V8 and the more complex and powerful EcoBoost V6. Though the EcoBoost engine promises better fuel efficiency and a major improvement in torque output, many owners have reported problems ranging from condensation build up in the intercooler, to misfiring, to valve-gunk buildup, and more. Some owners have even reported turbocharger failure, which could eat up all fuel savings if it occurs out of warranty. Keep context in mind, noting that most EcoBoost owners have had few if any issues. Still, our recommendation is the 5.0-liter V8, which seems like F-150’s all-around best engine for the long term. If you’re set on the EcoBoost powerplant, be sure to have a full diagnostic scan performed, be sure that all servicing is up to date, and budget for any extended warranty available, if possible. Your Best Bet?: A healthy used Ford F-150 from this generation that matches your needs, preferred options and body style, and powerplant, can be bought with relative confidence after a full Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI) by a Ford technician. Purchasing a used F-150 without full service records and an inspection is not advised especially if it’s running the EcoBoost engine. There were places in this galaxy that were highways and main streets, places where a ship could jump through every few moments. There were others that she thought were more analogous to a badly-paved farm-to-market road. They were clear enough to fly through, but not quite safe enough for hyperspace jumps. If your ship was hardy enough and could withstand debris and rock scraping off the paint, they made for a low-stress scenic trip. It also meant that seeing another vessel was something of a novelty.

It was along one of these routes that she had stopped off to sort through various reports, giving herself a little time to stretch her legs. Harrison’s radar had picked up an unusual reading, a smallish object about the size of a pick-up truck, too geometrical to be an errant asteroid. The scanning equipment didn’t like it much. Her display kept blinking, as if Harrison’s instruments couldn’t decide if it was half a klik away or if she was right on top of it. Visibility wasn’t great, either, and she wasn’t picking up a signal on any of the usual channels. Her best guess was a stranded escape pod, but there was no larger vessel anywhere in sight. Moving carefully, she edged her ship toward the reading until the shadow of its outline was visible against the stars, though the shade of a nearby moon cast the object into total blackness. Satisfied, she stood and pulled a first aid kit down from storage.

“Harrison, hold down the fort. I’m going for a walk. Keep the doors open after I’ve disembarked. And prep medical,” she added as an afterthought. Her helmet materialized into place as she stepped into the airlock chamber. nudging Chewie into the main ship before sealing the doors. Harrison was polite enough to wait until the telltale hiss of decompression had ended and the airlock opened into black space before speaking into her helmet. ‘Scans for life are inconclusive. Be careful.’

Carol didn’t answer. She lifted off and came around to examine the object, but the shadow of the moon was making everything black. “Harrison, could you—” Before she had even finished speaking, the spotlights came on, right in her eyes. “...Thanks.” Squinting against the sudden shine, she shifted the first aid kit under her arm and turned back toward the mystery object.

“...Oh, what the hell?” It wasn’t an escape pod. It wasn’t a probe. Carol wasn’t entirely sure what it was, because it definitely couldn’t be what it looked like.

Floating in space was a wooden box, probably eight feet tall and deep blue. It looked like a fancy phone booth, and the signage on the door seemed to confirm it, but that certainly didn’t help explain what it was doing on a completely different arm of the galaxy from Earth. Naturally, she first tried the door — which was locked. It would be fairly easy to force it open, but Carol didn’t want to risk breaking anything inside. Glancing back to the open doors of the airlock, she wrapped one arm around the box and flew it in, lifting it squarely onto the metal floor as the airlock doors sealed behind her. Only after the airlock had repressurized did she try the door again, giving the handle a firm shove, but the lock wouldn’t break.

“Harrison, find out if Rocket stashed any lockpicks on board.” Then, feeling more than a little foolish, she gave a knock on the door.
