A war broke out a year after Stanley’s deployment and had been raging for six years. Contact had been practically nonexistent, soldiers having no way to go back home or a way to contact their loved ones.

Xeno had counted. It’s been seven years, three months, twenty-two days, eleven hours, twenty-five minutes, and thirty seconds since he’s seen his best friend’s face.

And in six of those years he had lost communication with the man. For a long time he wondered why Stanley’s calls and letters ceased to exist. But once news broke out to the public he understood.

And it only brought him grief. They wouldn’t give anyone information on the soldiers. Refusing the demands from the public. Their excuse being it’d only “distract” them from the issue at foot. Even if it was potentially true, Xeno didn’t care. He wants—no—needs to see his beloved Stanley. Even if it was one last time.

He can only hope. Hope that he was in one piece, hope that he’ll come back home.

I wonder how Odysseus from Epic would react to the Penelope from the Penelopiad.

For context, the Penelopiad is a novel by Margaret Atwood about Penelope at home and its central tragedy is the twelve maids that were killed by Odysseus and Telemachus for "consorting" with the suitors. In the Penelopiad, Penelope made them spy for her even though the suitors raped and abused them, and their ghosts provide a Greek chorus condemning her for letting them die while she recounts her story. Even though Odysseus doesn't kill the maids in this version, because he's not being written by raging misogynists who think that's a heroic act, I wonder what sort of relationship there would be if Penelope wasn't the kind and gentle wife he's been dreaming of for twenty years. If she had become someone as broken and monstrous as him, someone who has spent twenty years in a world that would crush a female regent and her son at the first opportunity, and who survived by letting others be crushed in their stead.
