#PrideInTheOcean Feature: Kai Walton (He/Him)
"My name's Kai and I'm a marine biology student at the University of Oregon, currently working in the Sutherland Lab studying salp locomotion and architecture. I have so much #PrideInTheOcean because of how isolating our field can feel at times. #PrideInTheOcean is about creating community and encouraging queer people that they're welcome in the ocean and the marine sciences, and I'm so proud to be a part of my own wonderful and supportive community that I've built over the years. Keep your chin up, and don't give up! Things will always get better."
Throughout the month of June, the National Marine Sanctuary System is celebrating Ocean Month and Pride Month through our #PrideInTheOcean campaign. Our ocean is for everyone, no matter who you love, and we want to know how you take pride in this blue planet. 🏳️🌈

A global array of robotic floats is transforming how scientists observe ocean health.
The GO-BGC Array is a five-year project funded by the National Science Foundation to build a global network of floats equipped with chemical and biological sensors to monitor ocean health. The project brings together researchers from MBARI, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of Washington, and Princeton University to build and deploy 500 robotic biogeochemical floats around the globe.
A single robotic float costs the same as two days at sea on a research ship. The floats can collect data autonomously for more than five years in remote areas and in all seasons, including during winter storms, when shipboard work is limited. This game-changing technology is transforming how oceanographers and climate scientists observe and understand our changing ocean. Data streaming from the float array becomes available in near-real-time and is made freely available to researchers, educators, and policymakers around the world. Sharing these data brings new opportunities to learn, collaborate, and inspire collective action for our changing ocean. Learn more about the project and check out the data here: https://www.go-bgc.org/

#PrideInTheOcean Feature: Katie Farley
Supervisor of Curriculum and Instruction at The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk (She/Her)
"As a queer educator, I take #PrideInTheOcean by striving to make marine science and conservation a more accessible and inclusive space. I have the privilege of teaching students about the wonder and importance of the ocean - not just to the animals and plants that live there, but to human society as well. My job is to make sure that everyone feels like they can connect to our local waters and the global ocean, whether it's taking the time to look at shells when they go to the beach, advocating for conservation goals, or pursuing a career in marine biology.”

Just in time for World Ocean Day, we are unveiling the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary commemorative poster!
Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is located along 276 miles of California's coast, stretching from seven miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge south to Cambria. The 6,094 square miles of sanctuary waters contain extensive kelp forests, underwater canyons, and an underwater mountain teeming with life Davidson Seamount. Known as the "Serengeti of the Sea," the sanctuary harbors incredible marine life, diverse habitats, and offer spectacular opportunities for diving, fishing, whale watching, and more. The sanctuary's seafloor contains a living museum with significant archaeological, historical, and cultural resources.
Take a look for yourself and download the poster today:

"I am sharing my #PrideInTheOcean (and Chesapeake Bay) as a reminder that queer people of color are here, and we belong in the movement to protect the oceans and our other natural resources. I want young people to see other people like them being successful in this work. The vast ocean truly has room for everyone!” – Joe Toolan (he/him), Program Officer for Outreach and Education at the Chesapeake Bay Trust

This June, in honor of National Ocean Month, we highlighted the game-changing technology that enables us to monitor and better understand the health of the ocean and the diverse life that calls it home.
One of the most exciting developments that leverages the teamwork between scientists and engineers at MBARI is the combination of two MBARI innovations—a long-range autonomous underwater vehicle and a novel “laboratory in a can”—to survey the drifting bits of genetic material known as environmental DNA (eDNA) left behind by marine life. These cutting-edge robots can give us new insight into biodiversity changes in sensitive areas and track rare, endangered, and invasive species–all critical to understanding and maintaining a healthy ocean.
Good data are key to addressing major threats to the ocean, including climate change. This technology allows us to access and monitor eDNA more efficiently and spot changes much more quickly–which are critical in efforts to tackle climate change.
The ocean is the big blue heart of our planet. Ultimately, we need a diversity of perspectives and minds to solve the challenges it faces. When scientists from all disciplines work with engineers and communicators, we can inspire collective action for the ocean, together. Learn more about eDNA on our website.

"Hi! My name is Nova West (they/them) and I am a wildlife filmmaker and photographer specializing in underwater documentaries. In addition to collaborating with organizations such as National Geographic, Netflix, and Discovery, I also spend a lot of time at sea aboard the E/V Nautilus as a Video Engineer and Expedition Documentarian through Ocean Exploration Trust. Growing up landlocked in the midwest, I've always had an instinctual curiosity for the ocean; although hundreds of miles away, it somehow felt like home. The ocean is a place where I feel most free and able to be my authentic self. As a trans and nonbinary diver, I take #PrideInTheOcean."
