I have fallen in love with the villain leo au by @starrcrossrose and the kendra au by @xinrouska. So here's a fanart of maybe what it would be like if Leo and Kendra met again after she's turned over a new leaf.
This is the first I've tried to use a limited color palette, and I tried my hardest with these, but I could def feel my skills were lacking while making them. They didn't turn out quite how I'd hoped, everything got very dark without enough contras but I’m done fidgeting with it. And I learned a lot still, and I like them enough. Besides, I'm old enough I've finally gotten to the point that every time I create something I try to re-learn to love the process of art over what the final piece is.

Blog Deliverable #2:
(“Oregon State Hospital,” 2010)
In 1843, the first 'hospital' in the Oregon Territory was opened by James Hawthorne. Just a few years after its foundation, the Oregon Hospital for the Insane proceeded with its first mass grave burials for inmates at Lone Fir Cemetery in SE Portland. Since its final closure in 1883, an estimated 130 bodies are thought to have been buried in the cemetery. In the 1940s, Multnomah County built an office building over the graves, which was torn down in 2005. Plans were made but never completed, and it remains an unused gravel lot (Mental Health Association of Portland (2013).
In 1868, Hillside Farm for the Poor opened on Canyon Road near the Portland Zoo. It closed down in 1910 after members of local charities reported the building's unsanitary and deplorable conditions, which were expected to aid those with mental health conditions. Remains were discovered during the exhibit construction of the Oregon Zoo in 2008 and again in 2013. The remains were reburied and not memorialized (Mental Health Association of Portland (2013).
In 1923, a eugenics law passed in Oregon, allowing and even requiring the sterilization of "persons, male or female, who are feeble-minded, insane, epileptic, habitual criminals, moral degenerates, and sexual perverts, who are or ... who are likely to become a menace to society" (Mental Health Association of Portland (2013). Forced sterilization was routinely required to be granted release from a mental facility (Mental Health Association of Portland (2013).
In 1942, close to 500 patients and staff members at the Oregon State Hospital were accidentally poisoned by a patient helping in the kitchen. Forty-six were killed, but conditions did not change (Mental Health Association of Portland (2013).
In 1944, more than 20 deaths occurred at the Jail Drunk Tank, yet no changes occurred (Mental Health Association of Portland (2013).
In 1963, President Kennedy signed the federal Mental Retardation Facilities and Community Mental Health Construction Act, launching a national effort to move psychiatric patients from hospitals to community-based clinics. This initiative largely failed. State hospitals closed down, but cities and counties could not provide adequate services (Mental Health Association of Portland (2013).
In 1983, the Pacific Gateway Hospital & Counseling Centers opened as Oregon's sole private psychiatric hospital. It closed in 2001 after accusations of security issues and the murder of patient Jose Mejia Poot by three police officers. It was bulldozed in 2002 (Mental Health Association of Portland (2013).
In 2003, Kendra James was killed during a traffic stop by a Portland Police Officer. Her death began a series of high-profile police-involved deaths of people impaired by mental illnesses, including James Jahar Perez, Raymond Gwerder, James Chasse, Keaton Otis, Jack Collins, Aaron Campbell, Brad Morgan, and Billy Simms (Mental Health Association of Portland (2013).
In 2007, Mayor Tom Potter created a Mental Health Task Force, which called for the retraining of police officers (Mental Health Association of Portland (2013).
In 2010, after years of legal and political damage to Portland leaders following police-involved deaths of impaired individuals, a lawsuit was brought by the Department of Justice. They settled for many reforms to police training, procedures, public oversight, and urgent care for people with mental health conditions. No police officers were held accountable for the murders of the subjects in the lawsuit (Mental Health Association of Portland (2013).
In 2019-2021, Oregon had the fastest-growing rate of drug overdose deaths among 15-19-year-olds (Wilson, 2023).
In 2022, Oregon ranked miserably in a national report published by Mental Health America, indicating the highest prevalence of mental illness in the entire country (Manfield, 2022).
The painful effects of untreated mental health conditions that we see today are not a new phenomenon. The longstanding history of violence and apathy towards people experiencing mental health crises in Oregon by government and state officials has created a culture of carelessness at the bureaucratic level. It has been left to community-based organizations to initiate the work that has yet to be seen in caring for members of the city in need of support.
In an interview with KGW News, Portland residents reflect on the homeless camps across the street from their homes. Nathan Lamb comments, "At 8 o'clock, there are folks who are smoking meth, they're shooting up. There's domestic violence, and it's absolutely absurd" (KGW News, 2022). Nathan spent months attempting to get the city's attention, writing hundreds of emails and making relentless calls. "No one responds. No one seems to care" (KGW News, 2022). Eventually, the Rapid Response Team showed up to sweep the camp. A homeless woman living at this camp gave her insight. "We're human too. You know what I mean? We're just going through hard times right now" (KGW News, 2022). Commenting on the sweep of the camp by the Rapid Response team, she asserted, "We appreciate that, but two seconds later, all that stuff is about to be back on the ground. You know what I mean? Because we don't have a place to stay, we're on drugs, and that's just the way it is. If you move someone away from the situation, you've got to give them a solution. Because there's a problem, but what are you going to do to solve it?" (KGW News, 2022).
Homeless encampment removals are a highly utilized method of treatment against the homelessness crisis in Portland in recent years. In October 2022, 87 camps were swept in a single week. Throughout the rest of October and November, the average number of sweeps increased fivefold compared to the first three months of the year (Hayden, 2022).
These sweeps increased dramatically in April and May when Ted Wheeler ordered an unprecedented mass sweep of the Old Town neighborhood in an attempt to clean the city at the expense of the former residents of these camps. "It's unclear where the people who lived in those camps have gone. But Portland-area shelters don't have room for most of them, and city and county data indicate most people uprooted from camping on public land don't want to live in group shelters" (Hayden, 2022).
Many outreach workers and advocates for homeless individuals have also commented that when attempting to find beds for people, it could be nearly impossible to find open beds that fit the individual's personal criteria, in cases where a family shelter or domestic violence shelter is necessary (Hayden, 2022).
Kaia Sand, the director of the nonprofit Street Roots in Portland, explained the hesitation of unhoused individuals to accept the resources offered at camp sweeps. "When the options are about moving into a space that is not housing and might create new problems, lead to losing one's autonomy, adding to mental health stressors, that can feel like a less good option than just staying put where at least you know what you've got" (Hayden, 2022).
Other methods have been tried in attempts to control the damage of substance abuse, housing, and mental health crises expressing themselves in the city.
Portland Street Response, accessible through a 911 call, is a program affiliated with Portland Fire & Rescue that provides ongoing assistance to people experiencing mental health and behavioral health crises (Portland Street Response, 2022).
In June of this year, the city of Portland approved a public ban that prohibits camping on public property from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., along with introducing stricter rules on camping during all other hours (Zielinski, 2023b). The policy states that people cannot build a fire, use a gas heater, build temporary structures, litter, or dig into the ground at their camping location. Similarly to the camping sweeps, this method intends to benefit business owners and onlookers of the city while disregarding unhoused people entirely. Violators will receive a written warning upon the first offense, with a $100 fine or a jail sentence of up to 30 days imposed for a third violation (Zielinski, 2023b).
(Zielinski, 2023a).
Despite the ban's approval, many people vehemently oppose the policy and have spoken out about the risks to OPB. "Street Roots vendor George McCarthy, who was homeless in Portland for 10 years, said, "This proposition will immediately make your life criminal just for being alive. This will make it much harder for the most vulnerable people in the city to live" (Zielinski, 2023a). Michelle Hornbeck (pictured left), who has previously experienced homelessness, expressed concerns about women and children who are homeless and the unrealistic expectation of sleeping at night. "We don't sleep at night. That's when the mother in us comes out, that's when the survivor in us comes out" (Zielinski, 2023a). "Sandra Comstock, director of homeless service provider Hygiene 4 All, noted that "slapping $100 fines on homeless Portlanders will result in warrants and jail time that raise, rather than lower, barriers to health and housing" (Zielinski, 2023a).
Brandi Tuck, director of Portland Homeless Family Solutions, criticized Wheeler's decision, explaining that moving unhoused people into mass group homes is inhumane, as these individuals are likely highly distressed and emotionally aroused (Zielinski, 2022). "So we're talking about taking folks who are in survival mode and putting them all in mass shelters and expecting them to follow rules and get along with each other? Their brains are not capable of doing that. That exacerbates that distress response. We are creating neurobiological harm to these folks" (Zielinski, 2022).
Katrina Holland of JOIN argued that her organization has collaborated with landlords in securing potential "master leasing" apartments that could house people in a matter of days (Zielinski, 2022). This process entails organizations making agreements with private landlords to cover rent costs for houseless individuals. This is a promising new solution that opts for permanent, private housing over short-term shelter. Paired with rigorous funding for substance abuse treatment, it could be hugely successful. "There are a lot of proposals on the table that are proven to work. The city has just ignored them" (Zielinski, 2022).
In 2020, Measure 110 was passed, an act that decriminalized the possession of small amounts of drugs and directed revenue from marijuana sales to fund drug treatment and recovery services. In a preliminary report published in February of this year, the Measure succeeded in helping more than 60,000 people who were struggling with addiction reach services (Best, 2023). However, comments from unhoused individuals communicate the persevering need for housing alongside addiction treatment. "A couple of weeks ago, I didn't care if I died," said Castle. "There's no detox here. The hospital won't do anything for you; they'll give you a shot and send you back out on the streets" (Best, 2023).
The passing and implementation of Measure 110 is a hopeful beacon of progress in the uphill battle against substance abuse and mental health crises, though without lasting recovery services and further housing initiatives, there will not be remarkable change (Rothenburg, 2023). Despite substantial failings from the city and political leaders, several strides have been made through the passionate efforts of several organizations, toward the ambitious goal of helping people attain sobriety, housing, mental healthcare, and basic needs.
With 13 locations throughout Portland, Oregon, and the surrounding Metro Area, LifeWorks NW has been making widespread progress serving the community for over 60 years (LifeWorks NW, 2023). LifeWorks offers "mental health and addiction services for children and adolescents, walk-in and mobile crisis programs, family and individual community-based support programs, and peer-delivered services" (LifeWorks NW, 2023). With antiracist, equity-driven foundations, LifeWorks' mission is to "provide the highest quality, culturally responsive behavioral healthcare possible throughout the lifespan" (LifeWorks NW, 2023).
"LifeWorks NW promotes a healthy community by providing quality and culturally responsive mental health and addiction services across the lifespan throughout Washington County, Clackamas County, and Multnomah County" (LifeWorks NW, 2023).
Offering incredibly comprehensive addiction treatments and programs, LifeWorks NW plays a monumental role in encouraging and maintaining sobriety in those suffering from mental health conditions. Throughout 2022-2023, 98.7% of clients of LifeWorks NW were able to avoid the need for emergency services entirely through alternate treatment (LifeWorks NW, 2023). Serving nearly 20,000 people in 2021-2022, LifeWorks treats people from all walks of life, from every age, and from every background (LifeWorks NW, 2023).
Another organization that has served the community throughout these times of crises is Blanchet House. Mentioned in my last post, Blanchet House is a nonprofit social services organization in Old Town, Portland that offers food, clothing, and residential programs. From farm to table, Blanchet House serves the community with 3 hot meals 6 days a week for free. Clean clothing, hygiene products, and sleeping essentials are also offered during meal services. The residential program supports men struggling with addiction, unemployment, mental health, housing, or other challenges, offering renewal work programs and housing to struggling individuals (Blanchet House, 2023).
"Blanchet House's mission and core values embody our commitment to serving anyone in need with dignity and without discrimination or judgment. We recognize that our Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities are disproportionately impacted by socio-economic injustice. We recognize that this injustice can lead to housing and food insecurity, creating the need for our programs. These BHH services, then, must exemplify our commitment to equity, ensuring that those most affected by an injustice have the necessary resources to live freely and fairly. BHH's founding ideals prioritize each individual's needs in order to meet all people we serve where they are" (Blanchet House, 2023).
Active on platform X (formerly known as Twitter) and other social media sites, Blanchet House advocates for the rights of unhoused individuals and shares heartwarming stories of their community members and their services' impact on those who are struggling.
In 2020, Blanchet House helped more than 30,000 people (Blanchet House, 2023).
The lack of available treatment for unhoused individuals and those experiencing mental health crises directly impacts the prevalence of social issues such as domestic violence, child abuse, crime against people and property, unemployment, homelessness, hunger, auto crashes, and gun accidents. At a governmental level, despite small wins such as Measure 110, there have yet to be feasible options that will improve the circumstances of those who need support. With community-focused organizations such as these, there is hope for remission and recovery.
Oregon's historical pattern of neglect in addressing mental health and substance abuse issues proves a consistent failure in meeting people's needs. From early mass burials of mental health inmates (Mental Health Association of Portland (2013), to recent homeless encampment sweeps (KGW News, 2022), there's a blatant and historically surviving lack of comprehensive, compassionate solutions.
The passing of Measure 110 and the efforts of organizations like LifeWorks NW and Blanchet House are encouraging signs of progress. However, they also highlight the incessant need for lasting recovery services, long-term housing solutions, and mental healthcare as opposed to band-aid solutions. Only then will we progress as a city in meeting the basic survival needs of our citizens, and only then will the mental health and well-being of our communities begin to improve.

I Am The Apocalypse
Pairings: Jay Halstead x Reader; Kelly Severide x Reader (Platonic)
Warnings: Mentions of injury, Mentions of blood
Summary: Mini Episode rewrite of Chicago Fire S03x19 where reader was in Med when the blast went off.
A/N: First Chicago/Jay fic so I hope it’s okay~ Just something that popped in my head while I was rewatching so I just penned it down. Wrote it mainly from reader’s POV so only picked off parts where I felt would fit!
---
(Y/N POV)
I sipped my coffee at the table, dressed in Jay’s hoodie, which was my personal favourite, watching him pour his coffee.
“I can feel you staring.” He chuckled, as another lady stuck her head into the kitchen.
“Hey… Hi. Morning…” Jay glanced at her awkwardly.
“Melanie.” She responded, stepping into the kitchen.
“Jay. Will’s brother.” He responded, handing her the coffee cup.
“It’s nice to meet you.” She responded with a smile, as I watched the exchange with amusement. She seemed to just realise my presence and gave a polite nod before shuffling out of the kitchen to meet Will in the living room.
I raised my eyebrows at Jay who laughed and poured another cup of coffee for himself.
“When do you have to be at work?” Jay asked his brother, a cheeky smile lingering on his face, as Will entered the kitchen.
Will looked at his watch, “About five minutes ago?”
Jay exchanged a look with me. “It’s your first day.” He commented to his brother, taking a sip of his coffee.
“Uh, first and last, as it turns out.” Will replied, not looking up from the refrigerator.
Jay froze. “You’re… joking?”
Will shook his head. “No.”
I checked my phone, vaguely registering the conversation Jay was having with his brother about him returning to New York.
“Just give it a couple of weeks.” Jay paused before adding, “At least.”
Will turned to face Jay and shrugged. “I got to go.” Will turned to leave, adding, “Bye Y/N.”
I waved, gulping down the last of my coffee as Jay turned back to me with a sigh. I smiled and he took the empty mug from my hands, running it under water in the sink.
As I made to get up, my head gave a dull throb. Again. This stupid migraine hadn’t let up for at least a week. I closed my eyes and frowned, waiting for it to pass, pausing in my movement to get up from the table.
“Y/N?” I could feel Jay hovering over me now.
I cracked my eyes open, looking up at him. “I’m fine. It’s just that stupid migraine.”
Jay’s expression softened. “Maybe you should get that looked at.” He suggested, gently stroking my hair.
I nodded, “Yeah, maybe I’ll go to Med later.”
“I gotta go. Text me, okay?” Jay said, planting a kiss on the top of my head.
I smiled. “Be safe!” I called after him as he turned to give me a wink.
---
I had decided to make Med my first stop of the day after all and I was already sitting in a chair in the waiting room after registration. I had barely been there for 5 minutes when the waiting room became crowded with familiar faces of incoming firefighters from Firehouse 51, supporting incoming patients.
I nodded greetings to those who noticed me as they helped people in. I had been at 51 with Kelly as well as Molly’s with Jay enough times to be on familiar terms with most of them. I settled in for what I was sure was going to be a long wait, only looking up when I heard Kelly’s voice calling out, “Kendra!” as he helped the man he was supporting into a wheelchair.
Kelly glanced around and spotted me. “Y/N? You okay? What are you doing here?” He took a step closer to me.
I smiled at him. “I’m fine, just a persistent migraine, thought I’d better check it out. What’s up?” I asked, motioning to the room flooding with other firefighters.
Before Kelly could respond, a nurse stepped forward. “Everyone, may I have your attention please?” Her call was in vain to the bustle of the now full waiting room. Kelly glanced at her before calling at the top of his voice. “Listen up!”
The emergency room fell to silence almost immediately. She smiled gratefully at Kelly before turning to address everyone else. “All right, we are going to have a very full day here and I understand none of you feel well. But we’re going to need help from you as well as patience. If you’re here because of the ammonia leak…”
My attention trailed off as I noticed a patient get up and make his way nearer to her. My gut gave an uneasy churn as I watched him and I glanced over at Kelly but he wasn’t paying attention to me any longer.
The man dragged a chair towards him, stepping onto it. The nurse had now noticed him. “Sir, not yet, please. I need everyone…”
He swayed a little before he looked at everyone. “If you thought Ebola was a nightmare, I am the apocalypse!”
My eyes caught the grenade in his hand. “Kelly!” I shouted, as the man pulled out the pin.
“Death to all Americans. You’re all dead in two weeks!”
Kelly spun around as I saw Casey exit the treatment room that he had been in.
“Allahu akbar!” he screamed.
I watched in horror as Kelly sprinted towards him, pushing the nurse out of the way and flinging the man onto the ground, the sounds of the explosion drowning out my voice screaming my friend’s name.
----
The aftermath of the explosion was nothing but chaos. I heard firefighters running around, trying to contain the panic, as well as the people who were trying to run out of the emergency room.
“Hey, you okay?” I looked up.
“Y/N?” Will asked again when I didn’t respond.
“Yeah, I think so.” His eyes raked over me. “Let me take a look.” I let Will do what he needed to do and answered questions that he asked me. Satisfied that I wasn’t seriously hurt, he squeezed my shoulder. “Stay here,” he instructed before heading over to another badly injured patient.
I could hear several instructions being called out but only one caught my attention.
“Hey, hey over here! It’s Severide!”
My head snapped up and I clambered to my feet. As everyone came around him, calling his name. Sylvie grabbed his wrist, “It’s a weak pulse.”
Will quickly rushed over. “Let me see.”
Feeling his pulse at his neck, Will looked up. “No. Black tag him. He’s gone.”
I felt my heart drop into my gut. Even I knew what that meant.
Peter spun around to look at Will. “What?”
Will met Peter’s gaze. “The percentages are very low that he’ll…”
A look of rage passed Peter’s face. “I don’t give a damn about percentages.”
Will faltered and I reached out to touch his shoulder, my voice shaking a little. “Will… please…”
Will glanced at me before looking back at Peter. “No problem. Grab a gurney.” I watched as they busied putting Kelly onto a gurney, my heart giving another uncomfortable squeeze as I heard Casey report back to their fire chief outside.
I wasn’t sure how long I stood there in a daze, long after they had wheeled Kelly away. “Hey,” I felt a hand on my arm. I turned to face the nurse who had been trying to control the crowd before the explosion. “Are you okay?”
I nodded, before shrugging. “You’re April, right?” I asked her, as she looked at me quizzically before smiling.
“Yeah, I’ve heard a lot about you from Kelly. I’m Y/N.” I motioned in the direction of the treatment room Kelly was now in. She smiled back but glanced at the cut on my forehead. “Let’s just take care of this, okay?”
April helped to plaster a band-aid on my forehead, commenting that it was a miracle I wasn’t that badly hurt.
----
(Jay’s POV)
I turned into the hospital, climbing out of my car before picking up my phone to dial Y/N’s number.
Pick up, come on.
As the ringing died out, I desperately tried Will’s number. “Are you in there?”
“I am. Listen, the guy who blew himself up in here said he had something worse than Ebola.”
I froze. “What, like, he’s spreading it with this?” The pit in my stomach was expanding.
Will affirmed it. “Yeah, every single one of us in here has been in contact with him.” I could almost feel the fear bubbling up inside of me.
“Who is he?” I demanded.
Will’s response didn’t help. “No idea. Do us all a favour and find out, would you?”
“Will, wait…” The line went dead before I could ask him anything else.
In desperation, I dialled her number again, hoping she would answer.
---
(Y/N POV)
Thanking April, I got up as she moved on to help Will and Gabriela with another patient.
As I stood, I felt my phone buzzing in my pocket, exhaling a breath as I stared at Jay’s name flashing back at me.
“Jay?” I answered.
“Tell me you’re not in there.” I could hear Jay’s voice laced with worry.
“Yeah, I am. Sorry.” I replied, looking around at the carnage.
“Damn it.” He cursed under his breath.
Even in this situation, I could imagine the look on his face. “Jay, I’m fine. Don’t worry about me.”
I could hear him sigh. “Look, Will is there too, so…”
I interrupted him. “Yeah, I know. He’s looked me over already, okay? Don’t worry, I’ll see you soon.”
“Y/N…” I could hear his reluctance.
“Jay… you do what you got to do to get us out of here.” I paused. “I love you.”
Jay let out another breath on his end. “Be safe. I love you.”
We hung up and I headed towards a corner of the room, squatting next to a mother and daughter when a part of the ceiling came crashing down, as the girl to scream in fright.
I turned to her. “Hey, what’s your name, sweetheart?” I eyed Otis who ran over armed with an extinguisher to fight the flames and I continued to talk to her, successfully distracting her from the fire. Her mother smiled in thanks at me and I just smiled back. “It’s going to be alright.” I reassured her, my eyes falling again on the treatment room Kelly had been wheeled into, not sure if I was reassuring her or myself.
I looked up again as some firefighters entered the emergency room with ladders and extra extinguishers, knowing this wasn’t a good sign. They clambered up the ladders, changing extinguishers the moment they emptied one. April was going around the room trying to reassure everyone and I squeezed the little girl’s hand and smiled at her.
“Fire’s out!”, “All clear!” The firefighters shouted, clambering down from the ladders.
---
(Jay’s POV)
I stood next to Adam, surveying the computer in front of us inside the makeshift tent we were stationed in.
“Detective.”
I turned to glance in the direction of the voice of Sharon Goodwin, noting the couple following behind her.
“The parents of…”
She didn’t need to say more. I motioned to a few chairs. “Hi. Please have a seat.”
“Is there anything you can tell us?”
The man looked up with pleading eyes. “He was a smart boy. Always nice, helpful. This country has given our family so much. How could this have happened?”
I looked away for a moment. “He claimed to be infected with something similar to Ebola.”
They looked up in horror, as the man closed his eyes, almost as if in defeat. “From his work.”
I frowned, “What do you mean, from his work?” Adam shifted his weight.
“He was working at BHO Labs. They study infectious diseases.”
I looked at Adam. “We got to get somebody down there right now.”
Adam nodded, “I’m on it.”
I turned back to the parents, “What else can you tell me? Anything about who he might have been involved with, planned this with?”
I needed to focus on this. I needed to get them out of there.
---
(Y/N POV)
Casey stopped in front of me. “How we doing?”
I nodded back at him. He glanced at the mother and daughter next to me. “I’m working on getting some food and water in here. Okay?” He smiled before getting up, patting my shoulder.
I watched his retreating back but was distracted by someone calling out to him. “Hey fireman!”
I watched as Casey turned towards the man, who towered over him. “What’s the latest?” he demanded.
Casey frowned. “Everyone’s doing all they can.”
The man’s voice rose again. “What the hell does that mean? No one is telling us anything!”
I flinched; shouting wasn’t something I handled very well.
Casey moved towards him, trying to ask him to calm down. He seemed to give up the fight against Casey, squatting down next to the counter but the next minute, I heard Gabby’s voice, “Matt!” as the big guy swung a pipe towards Casey.
I pushed myself further back into the wall, shutting my eyes, hearing the scuffling sounds. If everyone would just calm the hell down and focus on what mattered, the faster we could probably get out of here. I focused my thoughts on Jay, trying to even out my breathing so that I could prevent a panic attack.
“You doing okay?” Will asked, grabbing my elbow.
My eyes snapped open, darting towards the other side of the room where Casey and April seemed to have handled the situation pretty well.
“Come on, why don’t you come with me.” Will muttered, pulling me up and leading me into a room. Herrmann was inside talking to a doctor, who Will introduced as Diane Claman.
I stood in the corner of the room as Will’s phone rang, and I heard Jay’s voice on the other end of the line. Even at this distance, it felt reassuring.
“He was working with Marburg, he injected himself with it.” Will repeated to Diane.
“What’s Marburg?” Herrmann asked, frowning a little.
Diane looked at us. “It’s a viral haemorrhagic fever. The Soviets developed it as a biological weapon.” Herrmann and I exchanged a look as she turned back to Will. “Ask them which strain of the Marburg virus.”
“Which strain?” Will’s voice broke the silence again.
“Ravn.” He repeated.
Jay must have said something and Will hung up with an “All right.”
Diane looked up again. “Okay, so now I just have to see if he was past the incubation period and actually infectious.”
For the first time, I spoke up. “And if he was past the incubation period?”
Will looked at me and shook his head slightly.
“It means Aleem was a walking biological weapon.” A grim silence fell across the room.
----
I had wandered to where the rest of the firefighters had gathered, outside the treatment room where Kelly was in.
I could see the doctor extract a piece of shrapnel from Kelly and just as I was about to breathe a sigh of relief, a spurt of blood shot out from Kelly’s open wound. I heard Sylvie’s voice, “Arterial bleeder!”
I bit my lip as I felt someone take my hand. Gabby gave me a small smile, squeezing my hand. We turned back to the room, as the machine slowly showed Kelly’s vitals stabilising and I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding.
A few minutes later, Herrmann emerged from another treatment room, looking dazed. Everyone looked up at him. “What is it?”
Herrmann let a small smile grace his lips. “Not contagious.” The sense of relief flooded the room as Diane stepped out. “Influenza A tested positive, but the Marburg virus didn’t have time to incubate. Whatever he had in his body died with him.”
The sigh of relief was audible as everyone hugged each other.
Will looked at me and smiled, nodding. “Open up the ER!” he announced, looking around.
---
(Jay’s POV)
I heard the vague sounds of the firefighters cheering outside and looked at Adam.
He nodded, motioning for me to head outside. I patted him on the back, jogging towards the ER, looking above all the heads to see if I could spot her.
--
(Y/N’s POV)
The only thing I wanted to do was to get out of here.
I looked towards Casey.
“Severide’s fine. We won’t be able to see him until tomorrow, anyway. Go.” He reassured me, guiding me towards the exit.
I stumbled out, wincing slightly at the bruises all over my body but peered.
I spotted him almost instantly, the worried lines across his face, scanning the crowd.
“Jay.” I breathed, heading straight for him. I crashed into his arms as I heard Jay’s sigh of relief in my ear. “Oh my god.” He muttered, pulling me into him, wrapping his arms around my body and cradling my head. I could feel how relieved he was as he sank his body into mine.
Quickly, he pulled away, surveying me at arm’s length. “Are you hurt?” he demanded.
I smiled, putting my hand against his cheek. “Bruised, but nothing serious.” I smiled.
“Thank God.” He pulled me back into his arms, holding me tightly as if he was never going to let me go.
Gently he broke away again, kissing me on the forehead. “Come on.” He muttered, gently leading me towards the white tents that I could now see.
Halstead, get out of here.” Antonio appeared in front of us.
Jay paused, studying Antonio.
“I got you. Go on, get out of here.” Antonio winked at me and I nodded back at him gratefully.
“Thanks.” Halstead and Antonio fist bumped each other and Jay helped me into his car.
We didn’t say much on the ride back but Jay never let go of my hand.
We drove straight to his apartment and I headed straight for the shower, my bruised body welcoming the relief of warm water. Once we were cleaned up, Jay crawled into bed with me and I welcomed it, glad the day was over.
Jay put his chin on the top of my head. “You really scared me today.” He whispered.
My arms wrapped around his torso, I looked up at him.
“If I lost you…” his voice trailed off.
I leaned further into his embrace. “Honestly? I was scared too. Kelly got hurt… I was afraid I was going to lose him… afraid I wasn’t going to be able to see you again… I…” I paused before continuing, “Thanks for being here, Jay.”
Jay tilted my chin gently up so that I was looking at him and smiled. “Always.” Leaning forward, Jay pulled me into a deep kiss, which I leaned into, grateful that this day had ended as well as it could have.

CHICAGO FIRE – LEAVING THE STATION (S01E08)
Matt Casey: Why the hell are you studying Japanese?
Mouch: I read online that once you turn 50, your brain starts to
atrophy unless you keep it in shape.
Leslie Shay: I think that train’s already left the station, Mouch.
Joe Cruz: Say something in Japanese.
Mouch: I just started
Peter Mills: Hey, uh, where’s Herrmann?
Matt Casey: Tony Robbins seminar.
Otis Zvonecek: I got 20 bucks says in two weeks, you won’t be
able to string along a sentence.
Joe Cruz: [chuckles]
Mouch: Easiest money I ever made.
Otis Zvonecek: Done. What’s today?
Gabby Dawson: Um, 29th.
Matt Casey: Ah, damn it.
Gabby Dawson: Everything all right?
Matt Casey: Yeah. No, I just forgot something.
Chief Boden: Hey, everybody. We have the pleasure of hosting a
couple of visiting firefighters again. This is Gavin
and Presley. They will be observing over the next
couple of shifts.
Lieutenant Casey, Lieutenant Severide, and… the rest
of the knuckleheads.
Gavin: Hey guys, thanks so much for allowing us to be here. And let
us know if there’s anything we can do to help out.
Mouch: Whoa, whoa, whoa. Was that a Canadian ‘out’ I heard?
Gavin: Yes, sir. Toronto.
Presley: We both just finished our probationary period.
Mouch: You know what?
Uh, welcome aboard, guys.
No offense, but someone else will have to give you the
tour, ‘cause it ain’t gonna be me.
[door closes]
Matt Casey: Ignore him.
[alarm blaring & beeping]
(Over PA): Truck 81, Squad 3, Ambulance 61. Injury on the blue line,
Logan Square Station.
[sirens wailing, horn blares]
[sirens stop wailing]
Chief Boden: (over radio) Be aware, men, the third rail could still be
hot.
Matt Casey: You heard him, guys. Everyone keep your eyes
forward. Let’s do this the right way.
Chief Boden: (over radio) Main, do we have a hold on the
(into radio) blue line power at Logan Square?
Dispatcher: (over radio) Stand by. We’re waiting for confirmation.
Conductor: I think I hit someone.
Matt Casey: (into radio) Chief, we might have a victim on the
tracks. (over radio) Conductor thinks he hit
someone.
Chief Boden: (into radio) You and Mills walk back down
(over radio) toward the tunnel. Mind that third rail.
Matt Casey: (into radio) Copy.
Joe Cruz: All good.
Dispatcher: (over radio) CTA confirms power has been shut down.
Chief Boden: Cruz, we got the all-clear. Throw the chain.
Peter Mills: Yo! Hey, I see somebody!
Joe Cruz: Three, two, one, go!
[power sizzling]
Chief Boden: (into radio) Main, we still have power on the
southbound track!
Victim 1: Please, help me.
Matt Casey: (into radio) His leg’s stuck in the axle. I need this rail
turned off.
Chief Boden: (over radio) We’re working on it, Casey.
Matt Casey: My name’s Matt.
Victim 1: [exhales] Jacob.
Matt Casey: What happened, Jacob?
Victim 1 (Jacob): My sister Kayla and me went into the subway
through an access door, just to look around
but it locked behind us [panting] We were…
we were trying to get out through the tunnel.
Peter Mills: I’ll go.
Victim 1 (Jacob): [panting]
Matt Casey: (into radio) Chief, there’s another kid in the tunnel. Mills
is going (over radio) inside.
Chief Boden: (into radio) I have two victims on the track. I need that
damn power off now.
Peter Mills: Kayla!
Call out!
Dispatcher: (over radio) Supervisor has confirmed power has been
shut down.
Chief Boden: Cruz, throw the chain again.
Joe Cruz: Three, two, one, go!
Power’s off!
Kelly Severide: What’s his name?
Matt Casey: Jacob.
Victim 1 (Jacob): [groans]
Kelly Severide: Jacob, my name is Kelly. We’re gonna get you out
of there, alright?
Gabby Dawson: Let’s get that pressure dressing ready.
Kelly Severide: There we go.
Alright, right there. That’s good.
Peter Mills: Kayla!
Kayla!
[saw whirring]
Victim 1 (Jacob): [groans]
Kelly Severide: This is gonna hurt, buddy.
Victim 1 (Jacob): [groans]
Kelly Severide: Okay, buddy, hang on, hang on.
Victim 1 (Jacob): [groaning in pain]
Gabby Dawson: Watch his head.
Right here.
Hey, Jacob?
Victim 1 (Jacob): My… My sister…
Matt Casey: We’re looking for her now.
Leslie Shay: Alright, pressure dressing’s in place. Let’s go.
Gabby Dawson: One, two, three.
Victim 1 (Jacob): [groans]
Matt Casey: (into radio) Mills.
Gabby Dawson: You’re gonna be okay, Jacob.
Matt Casey: Mills.
(into radio) Yeah, we, uh… found the victim. I need two
body bags, more lights, latex gloves.
Two teams scour each side of the tracks. Call out
whatever body part you find.
Hey… You okay?
- Title Screen -
Chief Boden: Department counsellor.
Wasn’t easy what we saw today and there is no
shame in reaching out to talk to somebody.
Matt Casey: Hey, take a seat guys. Make yourselves at home.
Gavin & Presley: Okay.
Chief Boden: Hey.
Act right.
Mouch: Copy that, Chief.
So how’s that socialised medicine working out for you
guys?
Joe Cruz: Mouch.
Mouch: To get your tonsils out, I heard you got to wait in a line
around the block for the same doctor who just finished
a colonoscopy.
Otis Zvonecek: You’re the only guy I know that could have a beef
with Canada.
Mouch: Let’s just say I got a snoot full of how things really work up
there.
Nothing against these two but pull that curtain back a little
bit. You might be surprised at what you find.
Matt Casey: Yeah, uh, again, you can ignore him.
Joe Cruz: [laughs] Mouch, you are out of your damn mind [laughs]
cutscene
[shower water running]
[buzzer sounds]
Joe Cruz: (over PA) Shay, you got a guest on the apparatus floor.
Leslie Shay: I thought you were going home.
Clarice: Well, Daniel’s not back from Phoenix until later today, so…
you want to have some lunch?
Leslie Shay: It’s not a good time, Clarice. I got to get back to…
Clarice: Look, it’s turkey and brie with cranberry, from Martinelli’s.
Leslie Shay: I thought they closed.
Clarice: They opened up again over in Forest Glen.
Leslie Shay: [chuckles]
Clarice: Mmm.
Here, here, here, feel this.
Leslie Shay: Whoa. What is that?
Clarice: It’s his elbow. Wait… or no, maybe it’s his foot. That is
crazy, right?
Leslie Shay: Yeah.
Did you guys pick out names yet?
Clarice: (sighs) No, we are still in the middle of negotiations. Daniel
really wants to name him after his father.
Leslie Shay: Oh.
Clarice: Gilbert.
Leslie Shay: Oh.
Clarice: Yeah, I know.
I remember when we used to pick out baby names.
Leslie Shay: Yeah.
Yeah.
Clarice: Look, maybe I shouldn’t have said that.
[alarm sounds & buzzes]
(Over PA): Ambulance 61, difficulty breathing.
Leslie Shay: I got to go.
Uh… thanks… thanks for lunch. I…
[clears throat]
What? I can’t eat a sandwich?
Clarice: Hi, Gabby.
Gabby Dawson: Hi, Clarice.
[siren wailing]
Lady 1: [tearfully] She had a seizure, then couldn’t breathe.
Leslie Shay: Grace, can you hear me?
She’s responsive.
Gabby Dawson: Has this ever happened before?
Lady 1: No. I mean, yes. Sh-She’s had a seizure before.
Gabby Dawson: Is she taking any anti-seizure medication?
Lady 1: No, the doctors never found anything.
But she has Celiac disease. She’s… she’s been on a gluten
free diet for the last two months.
Leslie Shay: Diminished lungs.
Gabby Dawson: Okay, let’s get her to Chicago U.
Lady 1: No.
Gabby Dawson: Ma’am, we got to get Grace to the hospital.
Lady 1: Not Chicago U. My father died at that hospital. Please don’t
take her there.
Gabby Dawson: Okay, fine. Lakeshore. But we got to go now.
Hey. Easy, Grace. Easy.
Victim 2 (Grace): I don’t like the way it smells.
Gabby Dawson: You don’t like the way what smells, sweetheart?
Leslie Shay: Six year-old girl, respiratory distress, history of
undiagnosed seizures.
ER Doctor: Exam room two. We’ll take her from here.
Lady 1: I’m right here but we… [continues indistinctly]
Oh my God. Please don’t… please don’t hurt her.
Gabby Dawson: Something’s up with that chick.
cutscene
Kelly Severide: Works better if you turn on the heat.
[rubbish bag rustling]
[metal clanging]
Peter Mills: [sighs] [breathing shakily]
[sobbing]
cutscene
Matt Casey: Hour, hour and a half, tops.
Chief Boden: Okay, I’ll have Cruz cover truck until you’re back.
Matt Casey: Got it. And I’m sorry about this. You know this isn’t my
style, but…
Chief Boden: Handle your business.
Matt Casey: Oh, uh… keep an eye on Mills for me.
Chief Boden: Yeah, sure.
Gabby Dawson: Hey, quick favour?
Matt Casey: Sure.
Gabby Dawson: Shay and I feel a little weird about this call we just
went on.
We need someone to pull some medical records
for us. So I was wondering if maybe Hallie could
do us a solid.
Matt Casey: Yeah, uh, the only thing is me and Hallie are taking a
break, so…
Gabby Dawson: Right. Got it.
Say no more.
And I’m sorry to hear that.
You’re calling Kendra.
Leslie Shay: Ugh.
This is gonna cost me a dinner or two. I mean,
guaranteed she asks me to dinner, and I really
don’t want to hear about her drama…
[clears throat] Hey Kendra.
Yep. Yeah.
Uh, huh. Okay.
Alright, thank you so much. And hey, this conversation
never took place.
Yeah.
Friday? [clears throat] Um, can I get back to you?
Thanks.
Uh, so Grace was taken to the ER twice in the last six
weeks for seizures… no mention anywhere in her
record of Celiac disease.
[alarm sounding & buzzing]
(Over PA): Truck 81, Squad 3, Ambulance 61. Heart attack victim,
Dearborn and Elm.
[sirens wailing]
Man 1: Frank’s dead!
He must’ve had a heart attack or something. One minute,
he was fine.
He was dropping branches to me. And the next thing I
know, he’s just hanging there.
[branch creaks and starts to break]
Chief Boden: Cruz! You get that aerial up in that tree now.
Joe Cruz: I can get close but there’s a lot of branches. I don’t see a
clean path.
Kelly Severide: Well, then we make one.
Vargas!
Jose Vargas: On it.
Presley: Won’t you need a Stokes basket?
Chief Boden: That limb’s not gonna give us enough time. We rig a
two-to-one pulley system. We bring him down the
fast way.
Vargas: Got it.
[chainsaw buzzing]
[siren wailing]
Vargas: Path is clear.
Firefighter: Here we go.
Chief Boden: When Severide drops his line, you take up the slack.
When he cuts the old line, it’s on you.
Victim 3 (Frank): [groans softly]
Kelly Severide: Hey! He’s alive!
[branch continues to break]
Gabby Dawson: Get him down here fast.
Kelly Severide: Agh! [groans]
Chief Boden: Hadley, move. Get his back.
Kelly Severide: [grunts]
Grab it! Grab that rope!
Otis Zvonecek: Got it, Kelly.
Chief Boden: Tie it off.
Kelly Severide: [grunts]
Mouch: Set.
Victim 3 (Frank): [whimpers]
Chief Boden: Load is yours.
Steady.
Hadley: You okay?
Kelly Severide: Yeah, fine. Just… Let’s get on the ground.
Leslie Shay: Easy, easy.
Gabby Dawson: Watch his head.
Leslie Shay: There we go.
Alright, he’s breathing… shallow respirations.
Gabby Dawson: Hey, he’s carrying candy. He could be a diabetic.
Leslie Shay: Yep.
Gabby Dawson: Let’s check his blood sugar.
[machine beeping]
Leslie Shay: Okay, it’s low… below 20.
Gabby Dawson: I’ll give him an amp of D50.
[indistinct radio chatter]
Victim 3 (Frank): What happened?
Leslie Shay: Okay, sir, you’re gonna be okay. Your blood sugar
dropped. Are you diabetic?
Victim 3 (Frank): Mmhmm.
Leslie Shay: Okay.
cutscene
Lady 2: Hey Matt.
Matt Casey: Christie.
Jim.
Man 2 (Jim): Matt.
Lady 2 (Christie): Sweetheart, do you remember your Uncle Matt
from Thanksgiving a couple years ago?
Matt Casey: Hey Violet.
You’re so grown up [chuckles lightly]
15 years… that’s crazy.
Lady 2 (Christie): I still miss him
Matt Casey: [exhales deeply]
Lady 2 (Christie): Well, we’ll, uh, let you have some alone time.
Matt Casey: You don’t have to go.
Lady 2 (Christie): No, it’s okay. We were just leaving. We’ve been
here awhile.
I guess I’ll see you in a couple weeks.
Matt Casey: Yeah, I’ll see you there.
cutscene
Chief Boden: We’ve all been there. It usually happens first few
months after being on the job. Right now, you
have nothing to compare it to.
But you will.
The longer you work, the more good you do… you’ll
be able to take days like this, put them into context,
and then move forward.
Peter Mills: It’s just that afterwards, I’m… I’m looking at Mouch
telling stories and Cruz playing video games. I don’t
know how they do it.
Chief Boden: Everybody has their own way in how they deal with
things. You will get on the other side of this, Peter.
You know what? Take the rest of the shift off.
Go easy.
I’m serious, though. Talk to someone. Counsellor’s
available.
So am I. So is your Lieutenant. Okay?
Peter Mills: Okay.
cutscene
Otis Zvonecek: [chuckling] Oh yeah, it stays with me. For sure.
Thank you, dude.
My buddy, Eddie, over at 61, ‘sworn to secrecy.’
Uh the Canadians? Guess where they’re from?
Mouch: Canada.
Otis Zvonecek: Cleveland.
Mouch: What?
Otis Zvonecek: Herrmann put ‘em up to it.
Mouch: Oh that sneaky son of a bitch. He’s the only one I confided
to about me and Canada and this is what he does to me?
Otis Zvonecek: I don’t know what Herrmann’s end game is in this
prank but if you’re asking me, I say we beat him
to it.
Mouch: Yeah.
Otis Zvonecek: Yeah?
Mouch: Yeah.
Otis Zvonecek: Yes. All right.
Joe Cruz: Hey Shay, you got a visitor again.
Gabby Dawson: Ugh, Clarice again?
Daniel Schwartz: Her husband [clears throat]
Leslie Shay: Nice to see you.
Daniel Schwartz: I’m looking for my wife and my unborn son.
Would you be kind enough to point me in the
right direction?
Leslie Shay: Yeah. She’s been staying with me a couple days.
Daniel Schwartz: So, in the light of the fact that you have zero
boundaries, I will tell you now very directly
that if you think I’m gonna stand…
Leslie Shay: Daniel, you might want to bring it down a peg, because
this is your problem.
Daniel Schwartz: Right, you… you have nothing to do with it.
Leslie Shay: She came to me as a friend needing a place to stay.
So I, as a friend, took her in. I sympathise with what
you’re going through and I wish I hadn’t been brought
into this, but if you keep coming at me like you’re
coming at me, I’m gonna tell you to kiss my ass in
two seconds.
Daniel Schwartz: [sighs] What can I do? This is my family we’re
talking about.
cutscene
Peter Mills: I can’t get it out of my head. Just… I can’t get it out of
my head.
Ingrid Mills: There was a time when your father couldn’t either.
And his way of fixing it was to just shove it down.
And then that turned into shutting off a part of
himself. It’s the part that makes us human.
Peter Mills: Then what do I do?
Ingrid Mills: Walk away. You come back to the restaurant. I don’t
want you to become a block of ice. And having seen
that in your father, believe me, you don’t want that for
yourself.
It’s not who you are. Hmm? Just… come home.
Peter Mills: [sighs]
cutscene
Kelly Severide: Anna. Hey, it’s me. Look um, I need a refill…
uh somewhat urgently.
I know, I know, I know (stammering) I-I just… I…
can you please just help me out?
I can’t. I… I don’t have the time.
I could… I could pay you for them, if that’s easier.
Anna? Hello?
[sighs]
cutscene
Leslie Shay: Oh, she’s pissed.
Hey, Kendra. Thanks for doing this.
Dr. Kendra: I thought I was done.
Leslie Shay: Ah, well, you know…
Gabby Dawson: Anything on Grace Wilkinson?
[keys clacking]
Dr. Kendra: Yeah, she accidentally swallowed some turpentine.
Leslie Shay: Her mom told us she had Celiac disease.
Dr. Kendra: Uh, mom told us she was doing some painting and left
the turpentine out by mistake. We pumped the girl’s
stomach, then moved her upstairs for observation.
Leslie Shay: She didn’t want to take her to Chicago U, remember?
Could be hospital jumping to hide abuse.
Gabby Dawson: Abuse that she’s causing for attention.
It fits. That would explain the mom’s behaviour,
the inconsistent symptoms that Grace is having,
that smell that she was talking about…
Dr. Kendra: Munchausen by proxy? It’s quite rare.
Gabby Dawson: I don’t really care what you call it. That woman is
poisoning her own kid. I want this reported to
DCFS. Right now. Will you back us up?
Leslie Shay: Dinner, Friday… on me.
Dr. Kendra: I’ll get the number.
Gabby Dawson: Four years ago [exhales], my old partner and I
reported this girl with cigarette burns all over
her arms and legs to DCFS, and the investigation
was a mess of red tape from beginning to end.
They eventually sent the girl back to her father
and that same week, she died of a brain bleed
from a beating he gave her. That ain’t happening
again.
cutscene
Kelly Severide: Hey, Mrs Mills.
Ingrid Mills: Hello Kelly. Chief Boden’s office is this way?
Kelly Severide: Yeah.
How’s Peter doing?
Ingrid Mills: He saw a girl cut to pieces today. I believe you all did.
How are you doing?
[door opens]
Chief Boden: Ingrid, uh… it’s been a long time.
Ingrid Mills: Yes it has.
Chief Boden: Uh, please, have a seat.
Ingrid Mills: No, I won’t be long.
Peter’s not like Henry.
Chief Boden: No one expects him to be.
Ingrid Mills: He does. And Peter’s got this whole idea of living up to
his father’s memory.
But that is not the life I want for him.
Peter’s not coming back to 51.
Chief Boden: If that’s what he decides… I’ll abide by it. You have
my word.
Ingrid Mills: You’re not hearing me. Peter’s time as a candidate…
is done. I’m asking you to respect my wishes. Now,
you owe me that at least.
cutscene
Joe Cruz: I can tell you this soup already smells like socks, Otis.
Otis Zvonecek: Oh, just wait till it hits your taste buds, man.
Gavin: Listen, if we’ve done anything to offend you…
Mouch: Oh, no, no, no. Eat up. Enjoy your free American meal.
Presley: Is Peter coming back?
Matt Casey: Of course. He’s just clearing his head. Today was a
tough one.
Otis Zvonecek: Here we go. Dinner’s served.
Matt Casey: What the hell is this?
Otis Zvonecek: Borscht, baby.
Mouch: [sniffs]
[grimaces]
Otis Zvonecek: Mama’s Sunday night go-to.
Matt Casey: [slurps]
Otis Zvonecek: Huh?
Matt Casey: [grimaces]
Otis Zvonecek: Eh? It’s good right?
Matt Casey: We’re ordering in.
cutscene
Kelly Severide: [groans]
[footsteps approaching]
Chief Boden: Hey. Nice job up there in that tree.
Kelly Severide: Thanks, Chief.
Chief Boden: What up with your arm?
Kelly Severide: What’s that?
Chief Boden: I said, “what up with your arm?”
Kelly Severide: Tweaked it a couple days ago lifting weights.
Chief Boden: Looked like more than a tweak.
Kelly Severide: Really, I’m fine.
Chief Boden: Okay. I see it again, you’re going in for an x-ray,
for your own safety.
Kelly Severide: No. Yeah, absolutely.
cutscene
[door opens to bunk room]
Gabby Dawson: DCFS looked into the Wilkinson girl’s case…
not gonna pursue.
Let’s take a ride.
[ambo door opens]
[door alarm beeps]
[ambo door shuts]
Leslie Shay: Listen, all I’m saying is, I told you after your suspension
hearing that I’d pull up on the reins if you started to go
sideways. This is me pulling.
Gabby Dawson: We’re just having a friendly conversation.
Uh, Mrs Wilkinson, sorry to bother you like this.
Uh…
Lady 1 (Mrs Wilkinson): You’ve got some nerve… fabricating lies
against me?
Gabby Dawson: Lies? You want to talk about lies? What was that
today… a seizure related to Celiac disease or
accidental ingestion of turpentine?
Lady 1 (Mrs Wilkinson): This is harassment, and I’m calling my
lawyer.
Gabby Dawson: You should call your doctor, because you need
help. You are poisoning your own daughter.
We’re not gonna stand by…
Lady 1 (Mrs Wilkinson): You have no idea how miserable your life is
about to get.
[door shuts and locks]
cutscene
Chief Boden: I’ve been on the phone for the last hour, getting my
ass handed to me, and there wasn’t a damn thing I
could say in your defence, because what you did
was dead wrong.
Gabby Dawson: Chief, she’s poisoning her daughter.
Chief Boden: Did you talk to the DCFS?
Gabby Dawson: Yeah, but…
Chief Boden: But nothing!
You let them handle it. What you don’t do is go
knocking on doors, start throwing out accusations.
Do you not get it, Gabriela?
Leslie Shay: It’s not just her, Chief.
Chief Boden: I will get to you in a second.
Answer my question.
Gabby Dawson: Yeah, Chief, I get it.
Chief Boden: Do you not like your partner?
Leslie Shay: I like her very much indeed, Sir.
Chief Boden: Well, she’s a hothead. What you do when you have a
hothead for a partner is you talk them out of doing
stupid-ass things that can get them into serious
trouble.
Gabriela, this, um… crusade that you are on, it ends
now. You take one step further, there will not be a
suspension hearing. There will be a good-bye party.
You two, my office. We need to talk about Mills
cutscene
[bells chiming]
Kelly Severide: [exhales]
Elise Mills: Hey Kelly.
Kelly Severide: Hey.
Is your brother here?
Elise Mills: Last we talked to him, he said he was gonna go for a
drive but I haven’t heard from him for a while.
Kelly Severide: Yeah, he hasn’t been picking up his phone.
Elise Mills: I’ve never seen him like this.
Kelly Severide: Okay, well, if you talk to him, could you tell him that
I stopped by? I just wanted to check on him.
Elise Mills: I will. Thank you.
cutscene
Leslie Shay: You have to go home.
Clarice: To what?
Leslie Shay: To a husband who’s at least owed an explanation.
Clarice: Okay, but I just… I didn’t even realise how unhappy I was
until you showed up at the baby shower.
Leslie Shay: You don’t get to come back married and pregnant
saying that you miss me.
You walked away. You broke my heart. And hey, that’s
the way it goes, but this isn’t good for me right now,
Clarice. I’ve been fooling myself these last few days.
Clarice: I made a mistake.
[knocks on door]
Leslie Shay: [sighs]
Clarice: Okay, if that’s Daniel, I’m just… I’m not here. I will leave.
I will go home. I will. But just not right now, please.
Corrine: Hey.
Leslie Shay: Hey Corrine.
Corrine: I texted you a couple times.
Leslie Shay: I know. I’m… and I’m sorry. I’ve just been dealing with
something.
Corrine: Is everything okay?
Leslie Shay: Fine. Yeah, it’s fine.
Corrine: It’s just… I think I left my earrings here.
Leslie Shay: Oh, I’ll find them and I’ll get them back to you.
I’m sorry. Just… now is really not a good time.
Clarice: What was that?
Leslie Shay: Nothing.
Clarice: Okay, um… I’m gonna go.
Leslie Shay: Okay.
Clarice: Look, I didn’t mean to bring up any bad memories.
Leslie Shay: I don’t have any.
I just can’t go back.
Clarice: This should’ve been ours.
[door opens & closes]
cutscene
Peter Mills: [sighs]
Ingrid Mills: See, this is where you belong, baby.
Peter Mills: Just give me a little room, mom.
cutscene
Mouch: Alright everybody, gather round.
We’re gonna trade t-shirts and patches in a bit but first, a
little competition.
The first one of you to climb up to the top gets a CFD
jacket. Sound good?
Gavin: That jacket’s mine.
Presley: Yeah, we’ll see.
Mouch: All right. And… one… two… three!
[water splashing]
Mouch: [laughs] Take that back to Cleveland, boys! [laughs]
Chief Boden: What the hell are you doing, Mouch?
Mouch: They’re not from Canada. Herrmann put them up to it.
Gavin: We’re from Canada!
Mouch: [laughs] No, no, no. Otis said… Otis… Oti…
[alarm sounds & beeps]
(Over PA): Ambulance 61, respiratory distress. 26 Orchard Street.
Leslie Shay: That’s Grace’s address.
Chief Boden: Hit it.
[siren wailing]
Housekeeper: I didn’t know what to do!
Gabby Dawson: Grace. You okay?
Housekeeper: In here! In here.
Gabby Dawson: [exhales sharply]
Leslie Shay: Doxepin, 150 milligrams.
Gabby Dawson: Oh man.
[zipper opens]
Gabby Dawson: Uh, why don’t you take Grace back into the living
room?
Housekeeper: Come on. Come with me.
Leslie Shay: Shallow breaths, rapid pulse.
Gabby Dawson: Alright, let’s get her to Lakeshore.
I’ll start an IV in the rig, you get an order to push
bicarb.
[exhales] She’s gonna be okay, Grace.
cutscene
[knocks on door]
Otis Zvonecek: You wanted to see me, Chief?
Chief Boden: That time you put all that hot sauce in Hadley’s
burger, that was funny.
Otis Zvonecek: Oh, I can’t take credit for that, Chief. I got that from
Dumb and Dumber.
Chief Boden: And the other time you put the blow-up doll in
Herrmann’s bunk, that was equally funny.
Otis Zvonecek: That was all me.
Chief Boden: Today, that was not funny. I mean, breaking balls is
one thing. But those men… they did not pay their
own way and drive ten hours...
[door closes]
Chief Boden: ...to come here to be the butt of a joke. When we
have a guest in this house, you will treat them as
such. Do you understand me?
Otis Zvonecek: Yes, Chief.
Chief Boden: So now you’re gonna walk back out there like the man
I know you to be.
You’re gonna look ‘em in the eye, shake their hand,
and apologise, because when they go back home
and their men ask them what the CFD were like,
they will be able to say we are stand-up.
[door opens]
Connie: Chief. You need to get to Lakeshore.
Chief Boden: That’ll be all.
cutscene
Mouch: And she couldn’t get into the United Stated, so I agreed to
meet her in Toronto. An immigration attorney there was
going to facilitate her American citizenship. I gave her the
five grand for his fees… never saw either one of them
again.
Joe Cruz: Well, yeah, but if she was Russian, why hate on Canada?
Mouch: Two extra weeks I’m up there getting the run-around from
various government agencies. I end up at the Canadian
anti-fraud centre.
Want to know what they said?
Buyer beware. And didn’t the weasel behind the counter
get a little chuckle at my expense?
Gavin: Mouch, on behalf of the commonwealth of Canada, we
apologise.
Mouch: I appreciate that.
[door opening]
Presley: Lieutenant?
I-I don’t want to get in anyone’s business here, but if I
may...
Matt Casey: Please.
Presley: Only because I was recently in Peter’s situation. Uh, I
received a call that involved… an infant mortality. And
uh, it-it really got to me. Uh, but our Lieutenant at the
time… he did something that really helped us out.
cutscene
Chief Boden: She’s on a ventilator now, and dialysis to help clear
the doxepin.
We just have to wait and see.
Man 3: Are you Gabriela Dawson?
You’re the one who accused Nina of poisoning our
daughter?
Chief Boden: Sir, your wife…
Man 3: You did this! You did this to her!
Chief Boden: Gabriela… I notified the Union, just in case the cops
want to talk to you. You need to be ready.
cutscene
Matt Casey: Mills, it’s Casey. Listen I know lots of people have been
talking to you today, uh, but before you make a
decision, I want to show you something. I can swing
by the restaurant after shift. And, um, please, just trust
me on this.
[cell phone beeps]
cutscene
Leslie Shay: Don’t worry, we’ll get through this.
[door opens]
Man 3: It’s all right, sweetheart. Tell her what you told me.
Girl 1 (Grace): She made me drink it.
Gabby Dawson: [sighs] It’s okay.
It’s okay, sweetie.
cutscene
Mouch: You really outdid yourself this time, Otis.
Otis Zvonecek: I feel horrible.
Mouch: Well, you should.
Otis Zvonecek: And what’s worse, they were so classy about it.
[sighs] So you were in love with that woman?
Mouch: Nah.
Lesson learned though.
Lesson learned.
[liquid splashing]
Otis Zvonecek: Oh those dicks.
cutscene
[knocks on door]
Corrine: Is Shay here?
Kelly Severide: She’s not.
Corrine: I just want my earrings.
Kelly Severide: Um… come on in.
[door closes]
Kelly Severide: You want a beer?
Corrine: Sure.
You know, I don’t know why she’s been so opposed to
calling me back.
Kelly Severide: She’s been going through some ex-girlfriend drama.
Corrine: See, all she had to do was tell me. I’m not looking to bring
any drama to her life. I’m just looking to have some fun.
Kelly Severide: No, I hear you. Keep it short and sweet. That’s my
policy.
Corrine: Exactly.
Kelly Severide: Hmm.
[cell phone vibrates]
Kelly Severide: Hey, it’s me.
Leslie Shay: Hey.
Kelly Severide: Um, real quick, Corrine… Um do you have any
claim to her?
Leslie Shay: Kelly, why?
Kelly Severide: Because if you do, then I’ll walk her to the door.
Leslie Shay: [scoffs] Knock yourself out.
Kelly Severide: You all right?
Leslie Shay: Have fun.
[kissing sounds]
[buttons ripping]
cutscene
[car door shuts]
[knocking on door]
[door opens]
Man 4: Lieutenant Casey.
Matt Casey: Gary. Thanks for letting us stop by.
Man 4 (Gary): Yeah.
Matt Casey: This is Peter Mills.
Man 4 (Gary): Hey, how you doing?
Peter Mills: Hey, nice to meet you.
Man 4 (Gary): Come on in.
Make yourselves comfortable.
Matt Casey: Thank you.
Man 4 (Gary): Sophie, Lieutenant Casey is here!
Matt Casey: Their last house burned down a couple years back.
We responded to the call.
How’s she doing?
Man 4 (Gary): She gets her learner’s permit next week. Can you
believe it?
Matt Casey: Sophie’s driving?
Man 4 (Gary): Well, not till next week, she’s not.
Matt Casey: [chuckles]
Girl 2 (Sophie): Lieutenant Casey!
Matt Casey: There she is.
Peter, this is Sophie.
Peter Mills: Hey.
Girl 2 (Sophie): Come on, I want to show you something.
Matt Casey: What have you got?
What is this?
‘Second place, girls sectional finals.’ Congratulations.
Girl 2 (Sophie): Thanks.
Peter Mills: Sorry.
Girl 2 (Sophie): Don’t be. I don’t mind. Lieutenant Casey pulled me
out of that fire.
[chuckles] I’m alive.

Definitions:
Tony Robbins = American author, coach, motivational speaker, and philanthropist
CTA = Chicago Transit Authority
Axle = A rod or spindle (either fixed or rotating) passing through the centre of a wheel or group of wheels.
Colonoscopy = An exam used to detect changes or abnormalities in the large intestine (colon) and rectum, During a colonoscopy, a long flexible tube (colonoscope) is inserted into the rectum. A tiny video camera at the tip of the tube allows the doctor to view the inside of the entire colon.
Celiac disease = A chronic digestive disorder resulting from an immune reaction to gliadin, a gluten found in wheat, barley, rye and sometimes oats. It involves inflammation and destruction of the inner lining of the small intestine and can lead to the malabsorption of minerals and nutrients.
Diminished lungs = Normal lung sounds are decreased and harder to hear.
Respiratory distress = Respiratory failure characterised by rapid onset of widespread inflammation in the lungs. It occurs when fluid builds up in the tin, elastic air sacs in your lungs. Symptoms include shortness of breath, rapid breathing, and bluish skin colouration.
Stokes basket = A device used to both immobilise as well as transport a victim over terrain.
Two-to-one pulley system = System consisting of two pulleys (wheel on an axle or shaft that is designed to support movement and change of direction of a taut cable or belt or transfer of power between shaft and cable or belt) with a rope running around them to lift a load. Using two or more pulleys reduces the amount of effort needed.
Amp = Ampule is a small sealed glass capsule/vial containing liquid, especially a measured quantity ready for injecting.
D50 = Used in emergency care to treat hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and to manage coma of unknown origin. An amp of D50 is 25 grams of glucose in a 50ml prefilled syringe (50% glucose). An amp of D50 provides 5 times the amount of glucose in a normal adult’s blood.
Turpentine = Fluid obtained by the distillation of resin harvested from living trees, mainly pines. It is mainly used as a solvent, and as a source of material for organic syntheses.
Munchausen by proxy = Mental health problem in which a caregiver makes up or causes an illness or injury in a person under his or her care, such as a child, an elderly adult, or a person who has a disability (See the Gypsy Rose Blanchard and her mother Dee Dee’s case for a famous example of Munchausen by proxy)
DCFS = Department of Children and Family Services
Doxepin = Medication used to treat major depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, chronic hives, and trouble sleeping.
Bicarb = Sodium bicarbonate is an antacid used to relive heartburn and acid indigestion.

But naw, naw! You gotta give more detail than that! When did you write that teacher the letter? How'd you give it to her? What did her nervous breakdown look like? And how'd you know she was working in Chik-Fil-A?! :O :O
uh it was 7th grade so like 2009, a year before i saw the jonas brothers in concert i think.... or two years hm wild
for context, i still fear this woman. in my 12 year old memory she was 11 ft tall, she couldn’t yell so her voice just got high pitched. she had the palest skin i’d ever seen, cold unfeeling eyes, the mouth of otis the cow, and tablecloth skirts. she had a crush on john cusack. she gave the whole class detention multiple times, including giving the class detention for failing one of her tests as a group. how did we fail as a group? because her ass couldn’t teach
i wrote the letter to her before christmas break i believe, or right after, because she quit after. someone slipped me a hershey’s cookies and cream bar. i wrote this page and a half long letter, i can’t remember any of it except for the part where i said her classroom was like a jail cell. i passed it around to my classmates before lunch for their approval, i got their approval, i put the thing on her desk, anonymously when her back was turned
THE NEXT DAY we’re all (meaning me) fucking nervous. mrs. crummy (that’s what we called her) was actinf normal and it was bizarre, everyone was like “do you think she read it?” but it wasn’t on her desk so she had to have read it. i’m s w e a t i n g. at some point, i don’t recall how it happened, but crumb cake (what my best friend and her mom called her) turned around and was like “it’s come to my attention that some of you think my classroom is like a jail cell” and then she read the whole thing out loud, and she knew it was my fucking handwriting because WHOMST ELSE. she was like “kendra did you mean it?” like KENDRA?? bitch this was from all of us, you’re outta line!!! but i wasn’t no snitch so i was like “yahhh i meant it”. i didn’t get detention miraculously but the 8th grade teacher, who i adore to this goddamn day was like “now kendra... this is very well-written, you’re so talented.... but don’t do it again”
SPRING BREAK rolls around and we come back and crummy is just not there. there’s a different lady there. in my 13 year old memory, this woman is 4 ft 3, she had florence welch hair, she wore earth tones. she was a substitute teacher but she was also an actress, and she had us act out everything to teach us about the weather which was... Fun? but we’re like.... where’s crummy? turns out she fuckin BAILED, no warnings, no anything. she’d only taught there for a few months, our class was her first class. we knew she was uhhh Unhinged because she kept getting mad at the little things and she never wanted to grade and she would snap if you asked for help but we were still surprised. but then we all moved on because fuck her
EIGHTH GRADE
i’m hanging out with my friends at recess, a girl i hated came up to me and was like “last weekend i saw crummy working at chik fil a”
and we fucking froze. “wait, what?”
“mrs. crummy crumrine, she’s working at chik fil a now. i saw her and she recognized me and said hi to me, she works at the chik fil a in the gallery”
“WHAT”
i never saw her at the chik fil a, but i’d like to think she owns one now, and that’s fine, because chik fil a sucks and i don’t eat there

The Info Sheet: I Am The Apocalypse (S3, E19)
There's a gas leak at a large factory that deals with ammonia as a refrigerant. Casey and Severide are climbing the ladder to rescue two workers trapped on the roof. Boden calls them back saying that ammonia produces very little fire and to wait for Hazmat, but Severide asks for him to let them rescue just the trapped workers and he gives them 2 minutes.
Mills says some victims are in respiratory distress and with an ambulance being a few minutes out, Severide suggests loading some into squad and taking them to Med, Casey says they'll go and help offload. Boden agrees.
Besides the ammonia victims, the ER is also filled with flu victims. Kendra tells April to separate the flu and ammonia victims. As she is doing so, a man steps on a chair and proclaims 'You thought ebola was a nightmare. I am the apocalypse. Death to All Americans' as he takes out a grenade and removes the pin. Severide rushes towards the man, pushes April out of the way, and then tackles the man to the ground just as the grenade explodes.
As everyone starts to gather themselves after the blast, Otis discovers Severide injured and unconscious on the ground. Mills & Brett run over to check on him. Brett says he has a weak pulse and Mills says there's trauma to his back and chest.
Will Halstead comes and checks Kelly and tells Mills to blacktag him as he's gone. When Mills questions him, he says percentages are very low and Mills tells him he doesn't give a damn about percentages. Halstead says to grab a gurney.
Casey reports to Boden that Severide is injured badly and the doc wanted to black tag him.
Casey, Otis and Mills help lift Severide onto the gurney. Halstead orders them to move him to trauma bay 4 and to get him on oxygen and cut off his jacket but to wait to uncover the wound. He says he'll be right there.
Hannah Tramble gets Halstead to let her into the ER and he assigns her to Kelly. He tells her to do what she can.
Inside the trauma bay, Tramble cuts away Kelly's top revealing the grenade shrapnel damage. His stats start to drop and she tells Brett to bag him while she dresses the wound. Casey watches from the doorway and Kelly is dreaming of Shay. An alarm on the monitor starts beeping and Tramble tells Mills they need to intubate.
Tramble gives Kelly 20mg of Etomidate and Mills starts to intubate Kelly. He struggles to do it at first but Tramble calms him and they are successful. Kelly stabilises. Tramble tells them they need to get a chest tube in and make sure there is no more damage from the other wounds.
Tramble starts to operate on Kelly.
Boden asks for an update on Severide. Casey says he's still unconscious. He asks to be kept posted.
Dawson asks Casey if there's any news on Severide but Casey tells her no.
Tramble is still pulling shrapnel out of the wounds. She had trouble getting shrapnel between his ribs and asks Brett to get some rib spreaders.
Mills helps Tramble but using the rib spreaders for her while she goes after the shrapnel. Kelly's stats start dropping again. Tramble tells Brett to take down the balloon on the ET tube and push it into his right main-stem. Mills points out it won't ventilate his left lung and she says she is going to cut the inferior pulmonary ligament and move his lung out of the way.
She goes after the final piece as Halstead enters. Casey, Dawson, Otis, Cruz and Rice are all watching outside the door. She removes the last piece of shrapnel but then there's an arterial bleeder. She says the shrapnel hit the intercostal artery and she has to suture.
April joins those at 51 watching on.
Severide's vitals start to stabilise again, everyone is looking happy and relieved. Halstead says he loves being wrong and leaves.
Casey tells Boden Severide's stable. He looks relieved and we also see Mouch, Tony and Capp sharing that relief.
Severide wakes up and April is with him. She tells him he scared her and he says he doesn't remember any of it. She kisses him on the head and turns the lights off to let him rest.
