Renfield circa 1931

Renfield: Oh it's nothing serious. It's just a scratch.

In my quest to see as many Renfield depictions as possible, I've come to the 1931 Dracula. Synopsis/spoilers below.
In this film it is Renfield who goes to Transylvania, instead of Harker, of whom we know only that he's Mina's fiancé. It is evident that Renfield '23 uses this version of the story as it's origin, rather than the original novel. This story gives a lot more depth to Renfield's character than the novel does. In the novel Renfield is just a random lunatic in Seward's asylum. Here he goes insane/becomes obsessed with eating bugs after his adventures in Transylvania. He arrives in London with the count, and is subsequently placed in the asylum. In this film we see Drac chocking Renfield and pushing him down the stairs after it becomes apparent that Renfield unwittingly brought Van Helsing and Harker to Drac's hideout. Could he still be alive? We never see his body. Perhaps, after Van Helsing and Harker were satisfied with their staking Dracula through the chest with a piece of his own coffin, Renfield came back to his senses and nursed Dracula back to health?
Anyway, Renfield gets quite a bit of screen time in this film and I recommend. I was able to watch it for free on Vimeo :)

If you watched renfield (2023) in theatres or on streaming and enjoyed it, I cannot recommend enough getting a dvd copy, to own or from your library if you can
There are so many special features, including a lot of deleted scenes and alternate takes (personal highlight from deleted scenes being the dance number, personal highlight from alternate takes being someone referring to renfield as a “reanimated Buster Keaton”), as well as a lotttt of behind the scenes segments, usually about the practical effects that went into the film and it really enhanced my enjoyment of the movie
It also really makes it evident how much respect there is for Dracula’s cinematic history there was during this film, esp of course the 1931 version. Examples that come to mind are Nicholas Hoult talking about trying to emulate Dwight Frye’s Renfield laugh or honestly anything Nic Cage said — it was a passion project for him and you can really tell

DRACULA SMACKDOWN FINALS: Dracula (1931 Film) vs. Bunnicula (Bunnicula)
Tumblr media
PROPAGANDA FOR BUNNICULA:
“Tbh I hated this book as a child but the themes of invasion by a stranger/foreigner are present here as well as in the og Dracula. Also I think it would be funny to see a rabbit in the poll”
PROPAGANDA FOR DRACULA:
“The most beautiful girl I've ever seen the absolute OG of all Draculas. The man was literally buried in his Dracula cape if Bela Lugosi doesn't win Baby of the Year I'm going to kill myself on live tv”
“He’s the original movie one lol, I sure hope he counts. He’s also *the classic*. If you think Dracula, you think of this overdramatic mf. It’s been a min since I’ve seen it, but he just is so silly :) manipulating Renfield :) making him eat bugs :) mudering an entire ship of people :) king stuff :) [...] I don’t like how he killed Lucy and attacked Mina tbh, but he really did that, and I can’t help but forgive him (Jkjk but he’s just that iconic tho)”
