Tinderbox, pt 7
Part VI here
“Sketch is going on tonight’s news.” Rachael put the wrapped roast beef on rye sandwich down on Marshall’s desk. “And the police plaza have a parcel for you. Can you stop by on the way home tonight?”
Marshall glanced at his watch - a traditional-faced timepiece he’d been given by his father. He wasn’t a fan of digital watches or their even newer children, fitbits and the like. “Sure." It would likely be some dry as sawdust paperwork. "Thanks for lunch.” He reached for his wallet, but Rachael waved him off. “You can buy next time.”
She took a seat in his visitor chair - the visitor chairs in the precinct were easily the most uncomfortable pieces of furniture known to man - and unwrapped her own sandwich, the famed New York Chopped Cheese.
The satisfied noise she made biting into it could have conjured sensual images, but Marshall found himself thinking of Rosie.
Fuck. He should've taken his jumper and her phone number, but he had no idea how to find her again, except hanging out by her apartment building, which was way too creepy. Maybe he could put a note in her letterbox. Was that creepy too?
His phone chirped and he pulled it from his pocket.
FAYE: Don't forget mom's dropping me off to your place tonight. Pizza party!
He smiled to himself. His daughter's appetite for pizza was unrivalled.
"Faye?" Rachael asked, smiling.
"Yep. Pizza party at my place tonight." He'd better make sure it smelled halfway decent, and he needed to change the sheets as she'd be bunking in his bed while he had the sofa.
"How is she?"
He lifted a shoulder as he chewed a bite of the sandwich. Rachael's favourite deli made fantastic lunches. "Typical thirteen year old. Thirteen going on thirty. Talking to boys on Snapchat." He shuddered, exacerbating it for effect.
"Not boys!" Rachael said in mock horror.
Marshall glared at her. "Your time will come."
"Not too soon if I can help it." She finished her sandwich, balled up the wrapper with the deli logo printed on it. "I've got a meeting in a few. Have fun with Faye tonight; say hi from me."
"Sure."
He finished his own sandwich, washed it down with a swallow of cold coffee and winced. The glamour of police work.
He texted Faye back:
DAD: Looking forward to it.
*****
He was owed some personal time, so he drove to the Police Plaza after a dry couple of hours of paperwork. The sketch would be airing on local news soon, and hopefully, someone would bite. A lot of catching criminals involved slow, methodical work. Satisfying, sometimes boring. Well, usually boring, actually.
He climbed the steps. Officer Taylor was at the reception desk. He'd spoken to her a few times for one thing or another during his time with NYPD.
"Hey, Marshall." Hardly anyone used his first name anymore. Although since yesterday, he'd found himself wondering how it might sound in Rosie's voice.
"Hi. How's it going?"
Taylor shrugged, smiling tiredly. "Same shit, different day."
They chuckled together.
"I hear you have a parcel for me?"
"Yep." Tucking wisps of her blonde hair back behind an ear, Taylor stood and scanned the cubbyholes below the reception desk. "Here we go. Woman dropped it off early this morning."
His heart thumped. "Can you remember what she looked like?"
Taylor raised a brow. "I might sit behind a desk, but I'm still a cop. Pretty, about my height, wavy brown hair, thick winter coat, sturdy shoes."
Rosie.
He took the bag. Peered inside. His jumper sat neatly folded, something white peeking out of one of the folds. He lifted it out, saw her loopy writing and the deli logo.
Well, shit. How long had he been eating roast beef on rye from the deli she worked at? Even New York was a village, sometimes.
He checked his watch. He had time to stop by the deli and thank her before Faye got dropped off for their pizza party. If he was unlucky, she'd want to give him one of her homemade face masks too. He'd smelled cucumber around his flat for three days after the last time.
"Thanks, Taylor."
"No problem." There was a curious glint in her sharp gaze, but either she knew better than go ask, or she knew that getting information out of Marshall was like getting blood from a stone.
He got back into his police-issued vehicle and drove the few blocks to the deli. Inside was a hub of activity. A dozen tables, most of which were full, held people of all ages and a smorgasbord of sandwiches, soup and hot drinks. The tv was on above the order counter and he recognised the local news anchor. The sketch might be about to air.
Pushing through the doors, welcome warmth hit him, along with the enticing scents of toasted bread and roasted meat.
He spied Rosie almost right away, delivering a pair of club sandwiches to an older couple by the far window. She spoke animatedly to them, and Marshall imagined, fondly, what it might be like to enjoy her brightness every day. It made a pang of longing strike his heart.
She turned towards the order counter.
"Hey Rosie, turn it up, would ya?" One of the customers asked. "It's about that cat burglar."
"I got it," one of the other deli staff replied, fishing a remote from his apron pocket.
Rosie glanced up at the tv, as did everyone else in the building. The sketch played on screen. There were the usual murmurs from some patrons, whereas others ignored the broadcast.
Not Rosie, though. She stared at up the screen, and the round serving tray dropped clean from her hands, smashing an empty glass tumbler on the floor.
Thanking my beauty of a beta, @ly--canthrope

FIVE FEET APART
Rachael Lippincott with Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis
Copyright 2018 / Simon & Schuster BFYR
Summary: Seventeen-year-olds Stella and Will, both suffering from cystic fibrosis, realize the only way to stay alive is to stay apart, but their love for each other is slowly pushing the boundaries of physical and emotional safety.
For Alyson
--R. L.
We dedicate this book, and the movie, to all the patients, families, medical staff, and loved ones who bravely fight the battle against cystic fibrosis every day. We hope the story of Stella and Will helps to bring awareness to this disease and, one day, a cure.
--M. D. and T. I.
________________________________________________________________
CHAPTER 1 - STELLA
I trace the outline of my sister’s drawing, lungs molded from a sea of flowers. Petals burst out from every edge of the twin ovals in soft pinks, deep whites, even heather blues, but somehow each one has a uniqueness, a vibrancy that feels like it’ll bloom forever. Some of the flowers haven’t blossomed yet, and I can feel the promise of life just waiting to unfold from the tiny buds under the weight of my finger. Those are my favorites.
I wonder, all too often, what it would be like to have lungs this healthy. This alive. I take a deep breath, feeling the air fight its way in and out of my body.
Slipping off the last petal of the last flower, my hand sinks, fingers dragging through the background of stars, each pinpoint of light that Abby drew a separate attempt to capture infinity. I clear my throat, pulling my hand away, and lean over to grab a picture of us from off my bed. Identical smiles peek out from underneath thick wool scarves, the holiday lights at the park down the street twinkling above our heads just like the stars in her drawing.
There was something magical about it. The soft glow of the lampposts in the park, the white snow clinging to the branches of the trees, the quiet stillness of it all. We nearly froze our butts off for that picture last year, but it was our tradition. Me and Abby, braving the cold to go see the holiday lights together.
This photo always makes me remember that feeling. The feeling of going on an adventure with my sister, just the two of, us, the world expanding like an open book.
I take a thumbtack and hang the picture next to the drawing before sitting down on my bed and grabbing my pocket notebook and pencil off my bedside table. My eyes travel down the long to-do list I made for myself this morning, starting with “#1: Plan to-do list,” which I’ve already put a satisfying line through, and going all the way down to “#22: Contemplate the afterlife.”
Number 22 was probably just a little ambitious for a Friday afternoon, but at least for now I can cross off number 17, “Decorate walls.” I look around the formerly stark room I’ve spent the better part of the morning making my own, once again, the wall now filled with the artwork Abby’s given me through the years, bits of color and life jumping out from clinical white walls, each once a product of a different trip to the hospital.
Me with an IV drip in my arm, the bag bursting with butterflies of different shapes and colors and sizes. Me wearing a nose cannula, the cable twisting to form an infinity sign. Me with my nebulizer, the vapor pouring out of it forming a cloudy halo. Then there’s the most delicate one, a faded tornado of stars that she drew my very first time here.
It’s not as polished as her later stuff, but somehow that make me like it more.
And right underneath all that vibrancy is…my pile of medical equipment, sitting right next to a hideous green faux-leather hospital chair that comes standard for every room here at Saint Grace’s. I eye the empty IV pole warily, knowing my first of many rounds of antibiotics over the next month is exactly and hour and nine minutes away. Lucky me.
“Here it is!” a voice calls from just outside my room. I look up as the door slowly creaks open and two familiar faces appear in the small crack of the doorway. Camila and Mya have visited me here a million times in the past decade, and they still can’t get from the lobby to my room without asking every person in the building for directions.
“Wrong room,” I say, grinning as a look of pure relief washes over them.
Mya laughs, pushing the door open the rest of the way. “It honestly could’ve been. This place is still a freaking maze.”
“Are you guys excited?” I say, hopping up to give them both hugs.
Camila pulls away to look at me, pouting, her dark-brown hair practically drooping along with her. “Second trip in a row without you.”
It’s true. This isn’t the first time my cystic fibrosis has taken me out of the running for some class trip or sunny vacation or school event. About 70 percent of the time, things are pretty normal for me. I go to school, I hang out with Camila and Mya, I work on my app. I just do it all with low-functioning lungs. But for the remaining 30 percent of my time, CF controls my life. Meaning when I need to return to the hospital for a tune-up, I miss out on things like a class trip to the art museum or now our senior trip to Cabo.
This particular tune-up just happens to be centered around the fact that I need to be pumped with antibiotics to finally get rid of a sore throat and a fever that won’t go away.
That, and my lung function is tanking.
Mya plunks down on my bed, sighing dramatically as she lies back. “It’s only two weeks. Are you sure you can’t come? It’s our senior trip, Stella!”
“I’m sure,” I say firmly, and they know I mean it. We’ve been friends since middle school, and they know by now that when it comes to plans, my CF gets the final say.
It’s not like I don’t want to go. It’s just, quite literally, a matter of life or death. I can’t go off to Cabo, or anywhere for that matter, and risk not coming back. I can’t do that to my parents. Not now.
“You were the head of the planning committee this year, though! Can’t you get them to move your treatments? We don’t want you to be stuck here,” Camila says, gesturing to the hospital room I so carefully decorated.
I shake my head. “We still have spring break together! And I haven’t missed a spring break ‘Besties Weekend’ since eighth grade, when I got that cold!” I say, smiling hopefully and looking back and forth between Camila and Mya. Neither of them returns my smile, though, and both opt to continue looking like I killed their family pets.
I notice they’re both holding the bags of bathing suits I told them to bring, so I grab Camila’s out of her hand in a desperate attempt to change the subject. “Ooh, suit options! We have to pick out the best ones!” Since I’m not going to be basking in the warm Cabo sun in a bathing suit of my choice, I figure I can at least live a little vicariously through my friends by picking out theirs with them.
This perks them both up. We eagerly dump their bags out on my bed, creating a mishmash of florals and polka dots and fluorescents.
I scan Camila’s pile of bathing suits, grabbing a red one that falls somewhere between a bikini bottom and a single piece of thread, which I know without a doubt is a hand-me-down from her older sister, Megan.
I toss it to her. “This one. It’s very you.”
Her eyes widen, and she holds it up to her waist, fixing her wire-frame glasses in surprise. “I mean, the tan lines would be pretty great--“
“Camila,” I say, grabbing a white-and-blue-striped bikini that I can tell will fit her like a glove. “I’m kidding. This one’s perfect.”
She looks relieved, grabbing the bikini from me. I turn my attention to Mya’s pile, but she’s busy texting away from the green hospital chair in the corner, a big smile plastered on her face.
I dig out a one-piece that she’s had since swim class in sixth grade, holding it up to her with a smirk. “How’s this, Mya?”
“Love it! Looks great!” she says, typing furiously.
Camila snorts, putting her suits back in the bag and giving me a sly smile. “Mason and Brooke called it quits,” she says in explanation.
“Oh my god. They did not!” I say. This is news. Amazing news.
Well, not for Brooke. But Mya has been crushing on Mason since Mrs. Wilson’s English class sophomore year, so this trip is her chance to finally make a move.
It bums me out I won’t be there to help her make a killer ten-step “Whirlwind Cabo Romance with Mason” plan.
Mya puts her phone away and shrugs casually, standing and pretending to look at some of the artwork on the walls. “No big deal. We’re going to meet him and Taylor at the airport tomorrow morning.”
I give her a look and she breaks out into a huge smile. “Okay, it’s a little bit of a big deal!”
We all squeal with excitement, and I hold up an adorable polka-dot one-piece that is super vintage, and right up her alley. She nods, grabbing it and holding it up to her body. “I was totally hoping you’d pick this one.”
I look over to see Camila glancing at her watch nervously, which is no surprise. She’s a champion procrastinator and probably hasn’t packed a single thing for Cabo yet.
Besides the bikini, of course.
She sees me notice her checking her watch and grins sheepishly. “I still need to buy a beach towel for tomorrow.”
Classic Camila.
I stand up, my heart sinking in my chest at the thought of them leaving, but I don’t want to hold them up. “You guys have to get going, then! Your plane is at, like, the ass crack of dawn tomorrow.”
Mya looks around the room sadly while Camila twists her bag of suits dejectedly around her hand. The two of them are making this even harder that I thought it would be. I swallow the guilt and annoyance that come bubbling up. It’s not like they’re the ones missing their senior trip to Cabo. At least they’ll be together.
I give them both big smiles, practically pulling them to the door with me. My cheeks hurt from all this fake positivity, but I don’t want to ruin it for them.
“We’ll send you a bunch of pictures, okay?” Camila says, giving me a hug.
“You’d better! Photoshop me into a few,” I say to Mya, who is a wizard at Adobe. “You won’t even know I wasn’t there!”
They linger in the doorway, and I give them an exaggerated eye roll, playfully shoving them out into the hallway. “Get outta here. Go have a great trip.”
“Love you, Stella!” they call as they walk down the hallway. I watch them go, waving until Mya’s bouncing curls are completely out of sight, suddenly wanting nothing more than to be walking out with them, off to pack instead of unpack.
My smile fades as I close the door and see the old family pictures pinned carefully to the back of my door.
It was taken a few summers ago on the front porch of our house during a Fourth of July barbecue. Me, Abby, Mom, and Dad, goofy smiles on all our faces as the camera captures the moment. I feel a swell of homesickness as I hear the sound of the worn, rickety wood of that front step, creaking underneath us as we laugh and get close for the picture. I miss that feeling. All of us together, happy and healthy. For the most part.
This isn’t helping. Singing, I pull myself away, looking over at the medicine cart.
In all honesty, I like it here. It’s been my home away from home since I was six, so I usually don’t mind coming. I get my treatments, I take my medicine, I drink my body weight in milk shakes, I get to see Barb and Julie, I leave until my next flare-up. Simple as that. But this time I feel anxious, restless even. Because instead of just wanting to get healthy, I need to get healthy. For my parent’s sake.
Because they’ve gone and messed up everything by getting divorced. And after losing each other, they won’t be able to handle losing me, too. I know it.
If I can get better, maybe…
One step at a time. I head over to the wall oxygen, double-checking the flowmeter is set properly, and listen for the steady hiss of the oxygen coming out of it before I pull the tube around my ears and slide the prongs of the cannula into my nose. Sighing, I sink down onto the familiarly uncomfortable hospital mattress, and take a deep breath.
I reach for my pocket notebook to read the next thing on my to-do list and keep myself preoccupied-- “#18: Record a video.”
I grab my pencil and bite it thoughtfully as I stare at the words I wrote earlier. Oddly enough, contemplating the afterlife seems easier right now.
But the list is the list, so, exhaling, I reach over to my bedside table to get my laptop, sitting cross-legged on the new floral comforter I picked out yesterday at Target while Camila and Mya were buying clothes for Cabo. I didn’t even need the comforter, but they were so enthusiastic in helping my pick something out for my trip to the hospital, I felt bad not getting it. At least it sort of matches my walls now, bright and vibrant and colorful.
I drum my fingers anxiously on the keyboard, and squint at my reflection in the screen while my computer starts up. I frown at the mess of long brown hair and try to smooth it down, running my fingers through it over and over. Frustrated, I pull my hair tie off my wrist and resort to a messy bun in an attempt to look halfway decent for this video. I grab my copy of Java Coding for Android Phones off my bedside table and put my laptop on top of it, so I don’t show some serious under chin, and can have a shot that’s remotely flattering.
Logging on to my YouTube Live account, I adjust the webcam, making sure you can see Abby’s lung drawing directly behind me.
It’s the perfect backdrop.
I close my eyes and take a deep breath, hearing the familiar wheeze of my lungs trying desperately to fill with air through the sea of mucus. Exhaling slowly, I slap a big Hallmark-greeting-card smile on my face before opening my eyes and pressing the enter key to go live.
“Hey guys. Is everyone having a good Black Friday? I waited for snow that never came!”
I glance into the corner of my screen as I turn the camera toward the hospital window, the sky a cloudy gray, the trees on the other side of the glass completely barren. I smile as my livestream count goes steadily past 1K, a fraction of the 23,940 YouTube subscribers who tune in to see how my battle with cystic fibrosis is going.
“So, I could be getting ready to go on a plane to Cabo for my school’s senior trip, but instead I’ll be spending this holiday at my home away from home, thanks to a mild sore throat.”
Plus, a raging fever. I think back to when I got my temperature taken on intake this morning, the flashing numbers on the thermometer blaring out a strong 102. I don’t want to mention it in the video, though, because my parents will definitely be watching this later.
As far as they know, I just have a nagging cold.
“Who needs two whole weeks of sunshine and blue skies and beaches when you can have a month of luxury right in your own backyard?”
I rattle off the amenities, counting them on my fingers. “Let’s see. I’ve got a full-time concierge, unlimited chocolate pudding, and laundry services. Oh, and Barb talked Dr. Hamid into letting me keep all my meds and treatments in my room this time! Check it out!”
I turn the webcam to the pile of medical equipment and then to the medicine cart next to me, which I’ve already perfectly organized into alphabetical and chronological order by the scheduled dosage time I plugged into the app I made. It’s finally ready for a test run!
That was number 14 on today’s to-do list, and I’m pretty proud of how it turned out.
My computer dings as comments begin rolling in. I see one mentioning Barb’s name with some heart emoji’s. She’s a crowd favorite just as much as she’s my favorite. Ever since I first came to the hospital more than ten years ago, she’s been the respiratory therapist here, slipping candy to me and the other CFers, like my partner in crime Poe. She holds our hand through even the most bone-crushing grips of pain like it’s nothing.
I’ve been making YouTube videos for about half that time to raise awareness about cystic fibrosis. Through the years more people that I could have ever imagined began following my surgeries and my treatments and my visits to Saint Grace’s, sticking with me through my awkward braces phase and everything.
“My lung function is down to thirty-five percent,” I say as I turn the camera back to me. “Dr. Hamid says I’m steadily climbing to the top of the transplant list now, so I’ll be here for a month, taking antibiotics, sticking to my regimen…” My eyes travel to the drawing behind me, the healthy lungs looming over my head, just out of reach.
I shake my head and smile, leaning over to grab a bottle from the medicine cart. “That means taking my medications on time, wearing my AffloVest to break up that mucus, and” -- I hold up the bottle -- “a whole lot of this liquid nutrition through my G-tube every night. If any ladies out there are wishing they could eat five thousand calories a day and still have a Cabo-ready beach body, I’m up for a trade.”
My computer dings away, messages pouring in one after another. Reading a few, I let the positivity push away all the negativity I felt going into this.
Hang in there, Stella! We love you.
Marry me!
“New lungs can come in at any moment, so I’ve got to be ready!” I say the words like I believe them wholeheartedly. Though after all these years I’ve learned to not get my hopes up too much.
DING! Another message.
I’ve got CF and you remind me to always stay positive. XOXO.
My heart warms, and I have a final big smile for the camera, for that person fighting the same fight that I am. This time it’s genuine. “All right, guys, thanks for watching! Gotta double-check my afternoon and evening meds now. You know how anal I am. I hope everyone has a great week. Bye!”
I end the live video and exhale slowly, closing the browser to see the smiling, winter-formal-ready faces on my desktop background. Me, Camila, and Mya, arm in arm, all in the same deep-red lipstick we’d picked out together at Sephora. Camila had wanted a bright pink, but Mya had convinced us that red was the color we NEEDED in our life. I’m still not convinced that was true.
Lying back, I pick up the worn panda resting on my pillows and wrap my arms tightly around him. Patches, my sister, Abby, named him. And what a fitting name that became. The years of coming in and out of the hospital with me have certainly taken their toll on him. Multicolored patches are sewn over spots where he ripped open, his stuffing pouring out when I squeezed too hard during the most painful of my treatments.
There’s a knock on my door, and it flies open not even a second later as Barb busts in holding an armful of pudding cups for me to make my medication with. “I’m back! Delivery!”
When it comes to Barb, not much has changed in the past six months, or the past ten years for that matter; she’s still the best. The same short, curly hair. The same colorful scrubs. The same smile that lights up the entire room.
But then an extremely pregnant Julie trails behind her, carrying an IV drip.
Now that’s a big change from six months ago.
I swallow my surprise and grin at Barb as she places the pudding at the edge of my bed for me to sort onto my medicine cart, then pulls out a list to double-check that the cart has everything I need on it.
“What would I do without you?” I ask.
She winks. “You’d die.”
Julie hangs the IV bag of antibiotics next to me, her belly brushing up against my arm. Why didn’t she tell me she’s pregnant? I go rigid, smiling thinly, as I eye her baby bump and try to subtly move away from it. “A lot’s changed in the past six months!”
She rubs her belly, blue eyes shining brightly as she gives me a big smile. “You want to feel her kick?”
“No,” I say, a little too quickly. I feel bad when she looks slightly taken aback at my bluntness, her blonde eyebrows arching up in surprise. But I don’t want any of my bad juju near that perfect, healthy baby.
Luckily, her eyes travel to my desktop background. “Are those your winter formal pics? I saw a bunch on Insta!” she says, excited. “How was it?”
“Super fun!” I say with a ton of enthusiasm as the awkwardness melts away. I open a folder on my desktop filled with pictures. “Crushed it on the dance floor for a solid three songs. Got to ride in a limo. The food didn’t suck. Plus, I made it to ten thirty before I got tired, which was way better than expected! Who needs a curfew when your body does it for you, right?”
I show her and Barb some pictures we all took at Mya’s house before the dance while she hooks me up to the IV drip and tests my blood pressure and O2 reading. I remember I used to be afraid of needles, but with every blood draw and IV drip, that fear slowly drifted away. Now I don’t even flinch. It makes me feel strong every time I get poked or prodded. Like I can overcome anything.
“All righty,” Barb says when they get all my vitals and finish oohing and aahing over my sparkly, silver A-line gown and my white rose corsage. Camila, Mya, and I decided to swap corsages when we went stag to the formal. I didn’t want to take a date, not that anybody asked me anyway. It was super possible that I would need to bail the day of, or wouldn’t feel well halfway through the dance, which wouldn’t have been fair to whomever I could’ve gone with. The two of them didn’t want me to feel left out, so instead of getting dates of their own, they decided we’d all go together. Because of the Mason developments, though, that doesn’t seem super likely for prom.
Barb nods to the filled medicine cart, resting a hand on her hip. “I’ll still monitor you, but you’re pretty much good to go.” She holds up a pill bottle. “Remember, you have to take this one with food,” she says, putting it carefully back and holding up another one. “And make sure you don’t--“
“I got it Barb,” I say. She’s just being her usual motherly self, but she holds up her hands in surrender. Deep down she knows that I’ll be absolutely fine.
I wave good-bye as they both head towards the door, using the remote next to my bed to sit it up a little more.
“By the way,” Barb says slowly as Julie ducks out of the room. Her eyes narrow at me and she gives me a gentle warning look. “I want you to finish your IV drip first, but Poe’s just checking in to room 310.”
“What? Really?” I say, my eyes widening as I move to launch myself out of bed to find him. I can’t believe he didn’t tell me he’d be here!
Barb steps forward, grabbing my shoulders and pushing me gently back down onto the bed before I can fully stand. “What part of ‘I want you to finish your IV drip first’ did you not get?”
I smile sheepishly at her, but how could she blame me? Poe was the first friend I made when I came to the hospital. He’s the only one who really gets it. We’ve fought CF together for a freaking decade. We’ll, together from a safe distance, anyway.
We can’t get too close to each other. For cystic fibrosis patients, cross-infection from certain bacteria strains is a huge risk. One touch between two CFers can literally kill both of them.
Her serious frown gives way to a gentle smile. “Settle in. Relax. Take a chill pill.” She eyes the medicine cart, jokingly. “Not literally.”
I nod, a real laugh spilling out, as a fresh wave of relief fills me at the news of Poe being here too.
“I’ll stop by later to help you with your AffloVest,” Barb says over her shoulder as she leaves. Grabbing my phone, I settle for a quick text message instead of a mad dash down the hall to room 310.
You’re here? Me too. Tune-up.
Not even a second goes by and my screen lights up with his replay: Bronchitis. Just happened. I’ll live. Come by and wave at me later. Gonna crash now.
I lean back on the bed, exhaling long and slow.
Truth is, I’m nervous about this visit.
My lung function fell to 35 percent so quickly: And now, even more than the fever and the sore throat, being here in the hospital for the next month doing treatment after treatment to stem the tide while my friends are far away is freaking me out. A lot. Thirty-five percent is a number that keeps my mom up at night. She doesn’t say it, but her computer does. Search after search about lung transplants and lung-function percentages, new combinations and phrasing but always the same idea. How to get more time. It makes me more afraid than I’ve even been before. But not for me. When you have CF, you sort of get used to the idea of dying young. No, I’m terrified for my parents. And what will become of them if the worst does happen, now that they don’t have each other.
But with Poe here, someone who understands, I can get through it. Once I’m actually allowed to see him.
The rest of the afternoon goes by slowly.
I work on my app, double-checking that I worked out the programming error that kept coming up when I tried to run it on my phone. I put some Fucidin on the sore skin around my G-tube in an attempt to make it less fire-engine red and more of a summer-sunset pink. I check and double-check my “At Bedtime” pile of bottles and pills. I reply to my parents’ every-hour-on-the-hour texts. I gaze out the window as the afternoon fades and see a couple about my age, laughing and kissing as they walk into the hospital. It’s not every day you see a happy couple coming into a hospital. Watching them holding hands and exchanging longing glances, I wonder what it would be like to have somebody look at me like that. People are always looking at my cannula, my scars, my G-tube, not at me.
It doesn’t make guys want to line up by my locker.
I “dated” Tyler Paul my freshman year of high school, but that lasted all of a month, until I came down with an infection and needed to go to the hospital for a few weeks. Even just a few days in, his texts started to get further and further apart, and I decided to break up with him. Besides, it was nothing like that couple out in the courtyard. Tyler’s palms were sweaty when we held hands, and he wore so much Axe body spray, I would go into coughing fits every time we hugged.
This thought process is not exactly a helpful distraction, so I even give number 22, “Contemplate the afterlife,” on my to-do list a try, and read some of Life, Death, and Immortality: The Journey of the Soul.
But pretty soon, I opt to just lie on my bed, looking up at the ceiling and listening to the wheezing sound of my breathing. I can hear the air struggling to get past the mucus that takes up space in my lungs. Rolling over, I crack open a vial of Flovent to give my lungs a helping hand. I pour the liquid into a nebulizer by my bed, the small machine humming to life as vapors pour from the mouthpiece.
I sit, staring at the drawing of the lungs while I breathe in and out.
And in and out.
And in and…out.
I hope when my parents come to visit over the next few days, my breathing is a little less labored. I told them both that the other one was taking me to the hospital this morning, but I actually just took an Uber here from the corner a street over from my mom’s new place. I don’t want either of them to have to face seeing me here again, at least until I’m looking better.
My mom was already giving me troubled looks when I needed to put my portable oxygen on just to pack.
There’s a knock on my door, and I look over from the wall I’m staring at, hoping it’s Poe stopping by to wave at me. I pull the mouthpiece off as Barb pops her head in. She drops a surgical face mask and latex gloves onto a table next to my door.
“New one upstairs. Meet me in fifteen?”
My heart leaps.
I nod, and she gives me a big smile before ducking out of the room. I grab the mouthpiece and take one more quick hit of the Flovent, letting the vapor fill my lungs the best I can before I’m up and moving. Shutting the nebulizer off, I pick up my portable oxygen concentrator from where it’s been charging next to my bed, press the circular button in the center to turn it on, and pull the strap over my shoulder. After I put the cannula in, I head over to the door, pulling on the blue latex gloves and wrapping the strings of the face mask around my ears.
Sliding into my Converse, I push my door open then squeeze out into the whitewashed corridor, deciding to go the long way so I can walk past Poe’s room.
I pass the nurses’ station in the center of the floor, waving hello to a young nurse’s assistance named Sarah, who is smiling over the top of the new, sleek metal cubicle.
They replaced that before my last visit six months ago. It’s the same height, but it used to be made of this worn wood that had probably been around since the hospital was founded sixty-some years ago. I remember when I was small enough to sneak past to whatever room Poe was in, my head still a good few inches from clearing the desk.
Now it comes up to my elbow.
Heading down the hallway, I grin as I see a small Colombian flag taped on the outside of a half-open door, an overturned skateboard keeping it propped slightly open.
I peer inside to see Poe fast asleep on his bed, curled into a surprisingly tiny ball underneath his plaid comforter, a suave Gordon Ramsay poster, positioned directly over his bed, keeping watch over him.
I draw a heart on the dry-erase board he’s stuck to the outside of his door to let him know I’ve been there, before moving off down the hallway toward the wooden double doors that will take me to the main part of the hospital, up and elevator, down C Wing, across the bridge into Building 2, and straight to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
One of the perks of coming here or more than a decade is that I know the hospital just as well as I knew the house I grew up in. every winding corridor, or hidden staircase, or secret shortcut, exploring over and over again.
But before I can open the double doors, a room door swings open next to me, and I turn my head in surprise to see the profile of a tall, thin boy I’ve never seen before. He’s standing in the doorway of room 315, holding a sketchbook in one hand and a charcoal pencil in the other, a white hospital bracelet like mine wrapped around his wrist.
I stop dead.
His tousled, dark-chocolate-brown hair is perfectly unruly, like he just popped out of a Teen Vogue and landed smack in the middle of Saint Grace’s Hospital. His eyes are a deep blue, the corners crinkling as he talks.
But it’s his smile that catches my eye more than anything else. It’s lopsided, and charming, and it has a magnetic warmth to it.
He’s so cute, my lung function feels like it dropped another 10 percent.
It’s a good thing this mask is covering half my face, because I did not plan for cute guys on my floor this hospital stay.
“I’ve clocked their schedules,” he says as he puts the pencil casually behind his ear. I shift slightly to the left and see that he’s grinning at the couple I saw coming into the hospital earlier. “So, unless you plant your ass on the call button, no one’s going to bother you for at least an hour. And don’t forget. I gotta sleep in that bed, dude.”
“Way ahead of you.” I watch as the girl unzips the duffel bag she’s holding to show him blankets.
Wait. What?
Cute guy whistles. “Look at that. A regular Girl Scout.”
“We’re no animals, man,” her boyfriend say to him, giving him a big, dude-to-dude smile.
Oh my god. Gross. He’s letting his friends do it in his room, like it’s a motel.
I grimace and resume walking down the hallway to the exit doors, putting as much space as possible between me and whatever scheme is going on in there.
So much for cute.

My Top 10 TV Shows
I wanted my first real post to be one that I really had to think about whilst writing and because there are so many TV shows that I love, it was difficult for me to choose a top 10. Nevertheless, I did it and I am aware that not everyone will agree with my choices and reasons however these are my opinions, I would love to know what you think!
10. Archer
Starting off the list is the adult cartoon comedy Archer, revolving around Sterling Archer (H. Jon Benjamin) and a team of covert operatives at an international spy agency. Archer somehow finds a way to make dangerous and life threatening situations seem hilarious when the team experiences them. Archer and Malory's dysfunctional mother-son relationship , Pam’s dirty mind and Cyril cowardliness all create exceptional comedic moments. The superior writing of the show make every episode just as good if not better than the one before. I am so glad that the show has been confirmed to have two more seasons and cannot wait for them to start.
9. Attack on Titan
This dark, edgy series was my introduction to the world of anime. The series follows Eren, Mikasa and Armin, as well as the other members of the 104th cadet corps, as they fight for their lives against the titans. The brutality of the show keeps me on edge when watching it, the danger the characters face is very clearly real and we are constantly reminded that humanity is on the losing side of the war against the titans. Characters die like fodder and it keeps the show interesting, it leaves the ones who survive as well developed, amazing characters. The twists that occur throughout the show are shocking and unexpected keeping the audience from being bored whilst watching. I can happily say I believe this to be the best anime to date.
8. Friends
Ever since I was young, Friends has always been a show I could watch to distract myself. For the few who have no knowledge of the show, it’s about a group of six friends living in New York City making their way through adulthood. I re-watch all 10 seasons every few months because I can watch it over and over without getting bored. The show has some of the best comedic moments on TV and will forever been known as one of the best sitcoms in history. The main six characters perfectly support each other, with each playing off one another perfectly. There are so many memorable quotes/moments/episodes that were created throughout the course of the 10 seasons and Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry) will forever be one of my favourite characters of all time.
7. Daredevil
The show that started the path to The Defenders, Netflix’s Daredevil is an amazing adaptation of the Daredevil comics onto the small screen. The show follows Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), lawyer by day, vigilante by night, as he attempts to destroy corruption and crime in Hell’s Kitchen. After the not so successful Ben Affleck movie, watching a show that accurately represents Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk as they were truly meant to be shown is so refreshing. Without the success of Daredevil, the shows that followed would have just been a distant dream, however luckily that was not the case. Daredevil has some of the best fight scenes that I have ever seen, from both TV and movies, the hallway sequence, the Mad Dogs of Hell vs Daredevil or the prison fight between Frank Castle and a group of inmates are just to name a few of the incredibly choreographed fights seen that bring the brutality of the comics to life, putting the show on a whole new level of entertainment.
6. Firefly
This one season long Sci-Fi, Western space adventure series from Joss Whedon was the best sci-fi show from the early 2000’s, it was so great that it is still generating fan support and new fans learn of the shows greatness everyday. The show follows Captain Malcom Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) and his crew aboard the Serenity as they fight, smuggle and steal their way through space. The characters and writing are the reason I love this show, each character has strengths and flaws it's what makes them human and relatable, it's what keeps the show interesting over the course of its 14 episodes. All of the characters have a past that isn’t predictable or cliche, which makes them all unique and in turn made the show what it is. While the movie sequel, Serenity, was a nice way to end the series, the show deserved to have a much longer run but will forever be one of the best sci-fi shows to date.
5. Parks and Recreation
When it comes to comedies, Parks and Recreation is the best. The show revolves around Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) and the other employees of the Parks and Recreation department in Pawnee, Indiana as they tried to improve their community. With such a wide range of different characters come together the show creates a refreshing take on government employees. I am a strong believer that Amy Poehler is one of the best comedians of our time and this show just supports my point. Leslie Knope’s intense level of friendship for Ann Perkins and the other members of the Parks and Rec team creates many hilarious moments and interactions between the group. Each character's quirks and personalities make the show what it is. Before being exposed to Parks and Rec, I had never thought a series about the federal government would be so entertaining however this show proved me so wrong. While I’m sad the show is over, I think the ending was the perfect way to finish it and it will definitely be a show that I will watch over and over again.
4. Jessica Jones
This dark adaptation of the Alias comic book series is one of the best things Netflix has produced. The TV side of the MCU is just as good as the movie side, in my opinion. Out of all the Marvel shows, I believe Jessica Jones has the best plot, following Jessica as she deals with her trauma and trying to save others from the same fate at the hands of Kilgrave and includes incredible performances from Krysten Ritter as the titular character and David Tennant as the shows villain, Kilgrave. Jessica Jones is the first onscreen adaptation of one of the darker comics from Marvel, giving us a look at a more relatable characters who have been through traumatic experiences that sadly happen in everyday life, making Jessica Jones able to connect to so many people, despite having super powers. The supporting cast from the show is my favourite from all of the Marvel Netflix shows, including Rachael Taylor and Carrie Ann Moss, which is one of the reasons that I am excited for the release of season 2 next year.
3. Arrow
At number 3 on my list is the show that kicked off the CW Arrowverse as well as being the start to my obsession with watching TV shows. The show follows Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) as he returns home to Starling City after being stranded on an island for five years, upon his return he puts on a hood to honour his past and save his city. I started the show when the second season was airing, I watched the first half of the second season of the show first, before watching the first season and falling in love with the show. This series was the reason I discovered how much I love character progression as all of the characters in the show have had such incredible journeys. The reason the show is not at number 1 or 2 is because of some poor writing choices throughout seasons 3 and 4 that I was not a fan of, which I will discuss in a later post, but despite this I still love the show and season 5 pushed the standards of the series to an all time high and I am highly anticipating the return of the show next month.
2. Game of Thrones
As everybody who watches knows, this show is incredible. Game of Thrones explores nine noble families fighting for their claim to the Iron Throne to become the rulers of Westeros. The settings, story lines and characters make the series one of the best shows in television history. The brutality and seemingly heartlessness of the shows plot make it so intriguing as it constantly keeps me on edge, never before has a series made me so scared to get attached to any of the characters out of fear of a brutal, gory death scene that shocks me to my core. Despite this the show still makes my heart pound with every intense battle scene, betrayal and any scene involving the crazy beautiful Emilia Clarke as the true ruler of the seven kingdoms, Daenerys Targaryen. The shows incredible seventh season made me realize how much I love this show, and am eagerly awaiting the final installment of the series.
1. Agents of SHIELD
Agents of SHIELD is my favourite show for many reasons, the characters in the show are some of the most well developed and relatable characters in a show about superheroes. The series follows a team of SHIELD agents led by Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) as they fight to protect the world from any threat. Despite the unrealistic aspects of the show (e.g. superpowers, resurrection etc) that make it even more entertaining, the inclusion of bad-ass characters and fight scenes in addition to heart warming story lines and relationships are the main reason why I love this show. All of the characters have such great, complex relationships and they can all be related too by many spectators, whether it be FitzSimmons’ (Iain De Caestecker/ Elizabeth Henstridge) journey to being together, the incredible story line of Skye/Daisy (Chloe Bennet) meeting her parents, or the loss of friends which is explored multiple times throughout the series. Having re-watched the show countless times and still being affected by each character, plot twist and death throughout the incredible four seasons make this my all time favourite show. I cannot wait for season 5 to begin.
Thanks for reading, let me know what you thought and anything else you want me to write about. Also, recommend any TV shows that you think I should watch. Thanks again!!!

Rewatching “Transformers”
Yep, the Michael Bay one. Because I felt like it and it’s the only Transformer movie I enjoy as a guilty pleasure. Dab.
I like how they put the transformer noise over the shooting stars for the Paramount logo.
BEFORE TIME BEGAN, THERE WAS THE CUBE.
I will give this movie a little bit of credit: the music over Optimus’ explanation of the AllSpark is not bad.
Actually the music in this entire movie isn’t that bad.
Man, Peter Cullen isn’t getting paid enough in these movies.
Yeah, Tyrese (Gibson), earn that paycheck!
Oh my God, the color filter in this movie.
Traits of a Michael Bay movie: America, America, helicopters, fighter jets, blue, orange, green, yellow, aqua, the army, sparks, street lamps, America, esplosions, some shady shit in the government, lens flares, product placement, really really quick pan shots, a shady government agent covering up some secret government conspiracy, technicolor smoke, slow-mo shots of something being thrown up in the air behind someone, slow-mo shots of something AMERICA, and a whole bunch of metal
Waaiiiitttt... how come the wife of the Josh Duhamel character looks like Mary Winchester from “Supernatural?”
Compared to the other movies in this series that I’ve seen (Revenge of the Fallen and Age of Extinction), this one actually feels a little more... slow... like they take more time to explain things instead of just throwing explosion porn at you. I mean, they still do in this movie and I consider this one to be the un-laziest in this series.
Man, I remember when this movie first came out
WAAiiitttt.... why do I recognize the history teacher? Isn’t he Dr. Taub on House?
“The ice is freezing faster than it’s melting!” What?
NO SACRIFICE, NOOO VICTORYYY!!
This history is full of the most immature teenagers I’ve ever seen.
ELEVENTH GRADE?!? THESE ARE THE OLDEST ELEVENTH GRADERS I’VE EVER SEEN
“What would Jesus do?” I can still quote like 50% of this movie. That’s sad.
How do they not notice the 1977 Camaro driving into the lot by itself?
RIP Bernie Mac
So much yellow in this scene alone.
Why does a used car lot have a petting zoo?
Another question I have is why Bumblebee decided to have the Autobot symbol on the horn. Usually Autobots have their Autobot symbols on their chestplate so if you think about that, that’s just weird.
Jon Voight!
RACHAEL TAYLOR! TRISH WALKER! I forgot she was in this movie!
Trish, get back to your radio show!
Sam, why is your username LadiesMan217? If you’re trying to sell stuff on eBay, which probably no one uses anymore (so that dates this movie by a long shot), have a username that doesn’t scream “Hey, I’m a egotistical dick.”
God, I hate the parents in this movie.
My dad used to have a lot of audio files from this movie and one of them was “Wow. You are so cheap.”
“Why don’t you use those magic voodoo powers and get us the hell out of here?” Man, I forgot about that line.
I forgot how cringy awkward Sam is in this. Jesus Christ.
Why is Megan Fox wearing a scarf when it’s shown to be like ninety degrees out?
“OK. You’ll call me.” We quote that all the time in my house it’s not even funny.
The little bee air freshener says “Bee-otch”
Megan Fox uses her teeth a lot when she talks.
Oh my God Sam stop talking.
Wow, Michael Bay absolutely could not keep it in his pants when it came to Megan Fox in this movie.
There’s only three female characters in this movie and Michael Bay gets freaky deaky filming-wise over Megan Fox
“You think I’m shallow?” Yes. You’re not sneaking that past me, movie.
*dramatic drum* THE PENTAGON!
OK, I agree with the Air Force One attendant, Ding Dongs are disgusting.
Couldn’t you use one pan-up to Frenzy after the Ding Dong stops rolling instead of having three cuts to even show it?
AN: I’m only 30 mins in and this movie is almost 2 and a half hours long
Oh my gosh, the filter again. They made Trish’s eyes REALLY BLUEEE
*imitates Frenzy as he slams his head on the screen in frustration*
Why is Sam’s profile picture look like his mugshot?
If the dad is the head of the neighborhood watch, his tired ass should be fired by the town council.
Wow, another thing that dates this movie: a flip phone.
Obligatory mean dogs chained to a wall of some sort.
But seriously though, who leaves their dogs in an empty land fill during the night?
How does Sam not notice that no one is driving his car?
Wait, at first, they (the Department of Defense) didn’t know what the hacking was caused by and now they think it’s a SpiderBot virus?
Isn’t “living organism” an oxymoron?
That’s a great question to ask a cop: “Are you on drugs?”
Why is the little Arab boy that travels with the Josh Duhamel character one of the best actors in this movie?
I don’t mean to be racist, but the bit where the Josh Duhamel character calls the India outsource center always cracks me up. I don’t know why it does.
Oh, the Josh Duhamel character’s name is Lennox. OK.
“Spooky 3-2, use 1-0-5 shells. Bring the rain.” The best line in this movie. Hands down.
Me and my sister pretty much quote this entire scene where Maggie goes to consult Glenn about the signal, including the “SHUT UP GRANDMAAAA!” and “GET OFF MY GRANDMAMA’S CARPET!”
“We’re not told where they’re going.” Of course because the Hover-round takes them where they wanna go.
That’s the same hologram dude who was the helicopter Decepticon in the beginning and now he’s in the police car.
Dude, the random rock music? What?
Barricade just said “AIYAIYAIAYAIYAIIII!” as a battle cry. I can’t take that seriously.
Obligatory trailer music at a heroic moment.
“What?!?” BA DA DAAA!!
“This is a hundred more times cooler than Armaggedon! I swear to God!” Don’t think you can get by with that self-deprication, Michael Bay. We know.
“‘Cuse me, are you the tooth fairy?” I’m sorry, but that bit’s really cute in my opinion.
Man, by the time the other Autobots transform, Optimus just finishes transforming. And he took like a full minute to transform compared to the ten second panning shot of the others transforming.
I know it probably isn’t him, but it sounds like Steve Blum performing as Ironhide.
“His vocal processor was damaged” Ratchet says as he points a freaking laser at Bumblebee’s “throat”
NO NOT THE DOG!
Dude, it isn’t about measuring whether or not you’re guilty. I’d eat a whole plate of donuts.
“DON’T TALK TO ME! DON’T TALK TO ME, CRIMINAL!”
Yep, sure, this asteroid sized projectile falling out of the sky is an airplane. And this guy is the head of the neighborhood watch?
“BAD MOJO...”
Sam: Be subtle
Autobots: OK (proceeds to trash yard and park themselves in the middle of it)
Optimus rubbing his faceplate in frustration is totally me
*DRAGS FACE ACROSS DESK IN FRUSTRATION AT THE BAD AND POORLY TIMED SEX JOKE*
“The parents are very irritating. Shall I dispose of them?” YES.
Hello John Turturro.
Wait, this whole movie takes place within a week?
BUMBLEBEE, STOP LUBRICATING THE MAN!
GET THIS THING TO STOP, HUH?
*Sam and Mikaela fall off of Optimus* Sorry, but you two would have shattered your ribcages after that.
“I bought a car. Turned out to be an alien robot. Who knew?” They should have made a TV spot centered around that quote.
“NBE?” “Non-Biological Extraterrestrial. Keep up with the acronyms here.” And that is how I remembered what an acronym is.
To be honest, I don’t like Charlie Adler Starscream that much. Get me Steve Blum or Tom Kenny then I’ll be good.
What kind of Nokia phone is that?
I actually like the effect of the AllSpark collapsing in on itself to make a smaller version of itself
Man, I’m not even a fan of Hugo Weaving as Megatron.
I like that shot of Megatron before he goes “You fail me yet again, Starscream” where he just clicks his fingers together.
*The team still at Hoover Dam barricade the door* They got a cave troll!
The truck Decepticon takes down Optimus via flying tackle hug
BUDDY!!!!!
Now see, why does Optimus have a sword?
No, not the Orpheum!
Now why is Jazz sitting there still in car mode just watching Bumblebee get his legs cut off?
YOU WANT A PIECE OF ME?!? YOU WANT A PIECE?!?
NO! I WANT TWO PIECES!
“Megatron.” “PRIIMMEEE!!!”
They keep reusing sound effects from the beginning in this battle
Oh no, not... Mountain Dew cans... *shrugs*
Did Megatron just yell “SURPRISE!” when he burst into that abandoned building?
He must be great at birthday parties
*Barricade gets shot in the Spark and dies* Oooh, right in the arc reactor!
AN: God, there’s only twenty minutes left. I can do this.
Starscream does virtually nothing in these series.
“Oh, so unwise.” MR. ANDERSON...
That one human Megatron flicked away is totally dead.
IT’S JUST YOU AND ME, MEGATRON.
NO, IT’S JUST ME, PRIME!!
“Armor’s just weak under the chest.” So let’s aim the aiming laser at the Decepticon’s hand. That sounds good.
That bit of Lennox driving the motorcycle and sliding under the Decepticon to kill it is actually pretty awesome
*Megatron dies with choking noises* And so, Stanley Yelnats killed Elrond with the AllSpark
Now how are Optimus and Megatron brothers? Unless there’s some cut backstory where they were like best friends until Megatron was like “You know what? Being a Decepticon sounds cool. Imma go do that.” and Optimus was like “YOU WERE THE CHOSEN ONE!”
I’ve heard rumors that there’s like 40 minutes of backstory that they cut from “The Last Knight”
Linkin Park!
*proceeds to sing all of “What I’ve Done”*

February Ahead // I’m Finally Going To Read The Raven Cycle Series & It’s Black History Month + A Great Resource for Education!!!!!
February is already here and where the fuck did January go???
You’d think that since I took a whole month off blogging I would have had loads of free time!
Well, I didn’t.
This month I don’t think I’ll have much free time either but I am hoping to read a shit load!
Introducing The Structured TBR
So this year I’m wanting to set myself a more structured TBR!
I mostly some requirements to keep me on track.
I want to try and read roughly 5 books a month
I worked out how many books I would need to read each month to reach my 50 book goal and it was just under 5!
I have to read at least 1 backlist ARC, if I have any
I’ll be picking these out of a TBR jar.
Read new ARCS ON TIME
If I have any new ARCS then I want to read them 1 month before publication, if I get it before then.
Otherwise, I want to have it read and reviewed before the publication date, as early a possible.
I want to read at least 2 of my owned backlist books
Sometimes I’ll be choosing these based on the Devour Your TBR monthly challenges—Which I am doing this month!
This month the challenge is Fantastic February which is dedicated to that whole mountain of fantasy and paranormal books you have lying around.–Devour Your TBR Group
I might also use a TBR jar for this sometimes, or go by my mood. I’ll see what works best.
At least 3 of my reads have to be diverse in some form or another
I did great at reading diversely last year and I want to continue this year!
I can read 1 library book a month and 1 graphic novel
This includes library ebooks, otherwise, I’ll get carried away!
I can make exceptions for myself as long as their diverse books and/or an ebook and I’ve run out of ARCs.
Read 10 entries each month of Rejected Princesses
Read 5 entries each month of Bygone Badass Broads
I’m really wanting to read these but I can’t read them in their entirety straight away so I’ve decided to read them across the year!
I’ll be marking these in my TBR and Read lists with the emojis I’ve used above so I can keep track and you guys follow my structure TBR and see if it’s actually working…

I read the first book in 2017 and it was so good, I loved it so much so I asked for the whole series as a present and wanted to wait until I had them before continuing.
Now I’ve had them for a year and still haven’t gotten to them so February is the month I finally start.
I’m unlikely to finish them all this month but I’m gonna try, I might surprise myself!

Transformers (2007)
Transformers is an entertaining blockbuster that's a little rough around the edges. It's no masterpiece, but I actually think filmmakers making big-budget sci-fi adventures could learn a thing or two from the aspects that it gets right.
High school students Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) and his crush, Mikaela Banes (Megan Fox), find themselves in the middle of an alien war when his car, a beaten-up old Camaro turns out to be an advanced robot. The tyrannical Decepticons and the heroic Autobots are desperately searching for the All-Spark, the source of their world's life, hidden somewhere on Earth.
The highlights are the technical aspects. These are not the Transformers you're used to, those blocky humanoids with jet wings on their backs and car windows on their chests. Optimus Prime (voiced by Peter Cullen), Bumblebee (Sam's car), Megatron (Hugo Weaving), and the rest look, sound and feel like advanced robots from a distant galaxy. They move with extreme agility, jumping off of buildings to get air, using explosions to propel themselves through the battlefield and quickly switching from vehicle to robot in the blink of an eye to get their shots and then be out of the range of fire. These creations have thousands, if not millions of wheels, pistons, and gears moving inside them and are convincing as extraterrestrials that can disguise themselves as machines from Earth. No two Transformers are alike and they’re all colored distinctly to help you decipher which is which in the dizzying battles that take place.
I think filmmakers should take note of the way this "invasion" is handled because it isn't really an alien invasion; it's humanity caught in the crossfire. There are only 13 Transformers in this film, and it’s divided about 50-50. A single robot is seen taking out an entire military base and a battle between two of them takes out several city blocks. You don't need to crow-bar a "Queen" or "mothership" so our heroes can take it out and save the day at the last minute. It also leaves room for more. Can you imagine the destruction that would occur if an army of these creatures arrived?
We’ve got two central human characters that are entertaining to follow. Shia LaBoeuf is well cast as the nerdy guy who would never get a second look from appropriately-named Megan Fox. He finally manages to catch her attention... too bad it’s the same day he gets pulled into an intergalactic war between shape-shifting robots. Sam becomes a bit irritating at times, but you get the sense that this guy’s a good kid. As for Mikaela, her character proves to be more than a pretty face. Most of the time, she proves herself to be far more capable than Sam.
There's a large number (I'd say a few too many) of side characters that add various elements to the film, be they action sequences, comic relief, or tension. I enjoyed Josh Duhamel as William Lennox, a soldier who witnesses the destructive power of the Transformers first-hand, Rachael Taylor as Maggie Madsen, an analyst that helps the Pentagon figure out exactly what is going on and, in the funniest role in the film, her hacker friend Glen Whitmann (Anthony Anderson). Thanks to them and the leads, the picture remains entertaining even when there aren't special effects on-screen.
The picture's biggest weakness is that too many of its characters are used for comic relief. The worst aggressor is John Turturro’s Agent Seymour Simmons. Overall the comedy works more than it doesn’t, but someone should’ve taken director Michael Bay aside and convinced him to dial it down. I also need to single out Jon Voight as the worst actor in the movie. His role is largely unnecessary and I would've edited him out.
2007's Transformers might be a glorified commercial for toys, Mountain Dew, GM, the military, and countless other products, but the Transformers franchise has ALWAYS been a big commercial. A more fitting criticism is that there are too many moments of comedy and some of the laughs irritate as often as they amuse. That said, technically the movie is truly awesome. The score by Steve Jablonsky is great, as is the sound editing and mixing. The titular characters are unique, memorable, fun to look at, and are involved in a number of impressive sequences. (On Blu-ray, June 30, 2014)

Epic Movie (Re)Watch #129 - Bottle Shock
Spoilers below.
Have I seen it before: Yes
Did I like it then: Yes.
Do I remember it: Yes.
Did I see it in theaters: No.
Format: DVD
1) Bottle Shock I think is one of the most oft forgotten films of the late 00’s, which is too bad because - although not the BEST film ever made - it is pretty damn entertaining to say the least.
2) The very first thing we as an audience experience while watching this film is its score. A few notes grace our ears before any visuals, which is delightful because the score is one of the best aspects of the film. Mark Adler’s work is able to blend both the passion of the vineyards in California with the more “snobbish” style of the French in a score which is occasionally humorous, largely touching, and totally memorable. The main theme alone feels just like the perfect fine wine to go with this movie.
3) Chris Pine as Bo.
This is an early film of Pine’s. Well, early as in pre-Star Trek but post Princess Diaries 2 and it shows off the roguish charm he would later cultivate in future roles. Bo is a flower child, a true hippie product of the 70s. He’s not only that though. Bo starts off as sort of a stereotype but he goes through a transformation of passion and self respect throughout the film, something Pine is able to show us wonderfully.
4) Alan Rickman as Steven Spurrier.
Honestly, has anyone seen Alan Rickman give a bad performance? Has he been in bad movies? Sure. But has he been bad IN movies? I don’t think so. Rickman gives the same level of devotion to Spurrier as he would Severus Snape or Hans Gruber and that is why he’s such a great actor. Spurrier is an interesting character for us to view as the audience. He’s a bit of a snob (well, more than a bit) but watching him become aware of the world of viniculture that lay just outside his previous understanding is a wonderful experience. Rickman is able to play Spurrier’s less likable characteristics in a way which never feels TOO awful. We always sort of connect with him, root for him, understand him. In some ways he is our introduction to this world, and the character writing mixed with Rickman’s performance allows it to work pretty damn well.
Also his bromance with Dennis Farina is pretty nice.
5) This film has some nice bits of humor. Quirky, honest, subtle. This is first seen when Spurrier is attending a fancy dinner and the table he has been given is by the kitchen, so he just keeps getting banged by the door. Very clever.
6) I grew up in Wisconsin, I appreciate any references to my home state.
Maurice [after Spurrier makes a joke about his being from Chicago]: “I’m from Milwaukee.”
7) I never really LIKED the relationship between Jim (Bill Pullman) and his son Bo until the film’s end. Jim is kind of a pretentious proud asshole who is a jerk to his son consistently. I mean I get that he’s passionate and worried about losing his dream, but save for a moment here or there I just don’t really like him at all. Maybe I’m not supposed to.
8) Rachael Taylor as Sam.Most of you probably know Taylor from her excellent work on “Jessica Jones”, well she does an admirable job here. While Sam can fall victim to being objectified here and there by male characters (and male writers), Taylor adds a nice depth to her. She’s still a bit of a 70s flower child but something MORE than Bo. There’s a charisma, an honesty, a passion to the way that Taylor plays Sam which makes the audience invested in her as a character.
9)
George [talking about how wine sort of gets “jet lag”]: “It gets what is commonly referred to as bottle shock.”
Roll credits!
10) Freddy Rodriguez as Gustavo.
The film takes a little while to show off the fact that Gustavo as a character has any…well…character. In the first ten or fifteen minutes he’s pretty silent and keeps to himself. But then we understand who he is in a simple grand gesture when he breaks off the antenna of a racist trucker. This paints Gustavo accurately, as for the rest of the film we learn that he is a passionate man, in touch with his heritage and true to his values. Rodriguez plays Gustavo wonderfully, stealing the show often from Pine and veteran performer Bill Pullman. His passion, his heart, everything that makes Gustavo Gustavo is given to us wonderfully by Rodriguez in a performance you will not be quick to forget.
He’s also got some great quotes.
Gustavo: “Modesty is the virtue of slaves.”
11) Eliza Dushku as Jo!
There’s not too much to say about Jo, but honestly I’m happy to see Eliza Dushku in any movie. I mean come on! She’s Faith on “Buffy”! What’s not to love!
12) The entire scam or “parlour trick” at the bar shows off a lot about the community we see in this film. We see the relationship between Bo and Gustavo clearly, we see how Napa - while wine country - is still filled with rogues. But these are rogues who love their wine, as the game they play at the bar is not based on beer it is based on love and respect they all have for wine. We get a sense of who Jo is, we get a sense of how Sam is fitting into her new environment, all in a wildly entertaining way. One of the best scenes in the film.
13) This film shows off its love for wine in a very sincere and touching way. Its passion about it is shown through all the characters, and particularly the touching music. You understand why Gustavo’s friend cries after tasting his wine, because we FEEL how it tastes as an audience member. That is no easy feat to accomplish on film.
14) I think one of this film’s issues is that it struggles a little with POV. Are we supposed to be seeing this world through Spurrier, through Bo, through Sam? There is not enough of a distinction for it to be an ensemble or anthology piece but there’s also not enough of a focus on one character to have someone we see this world through. Like there are times when Alan Rickman just disappears from the movie, or Bo is briefly forgotten.
15) I love this.
Bo [after Spurrier leaves from tasting their wine]: “Took money for a tasting?”
Jim: “Yeah.”
Bo: “Is that a new policy we have?”
Jim: “No.”
16) I never understood the emphasis on ambition. I mean I myself am ambitious but so what if you’re not? Like Jim gives Bo a hard time for not being ambitious. Like what’s the big deal if you don’t have ambition? As long as you are happy with your life and not treating people like shit, why do you need ambition? And who are other people to judge you for it?
17) When Sam sleeps with Gustavo, it feels totally random to me. Nothing earlier in this film suggested they were attracted to each other. I think it’s meant to show more of how powerful and how good his wine is (because she sleeps with him after tasting it) than anything else.

18) I love this whole aside.
Spurrier: "Wine is sunlight, held together by water." The poetic wisdom of the Italian physicist, philosopher, and stargazer, Galileo Galilei. It all begins with the soil, the vine, the grape. The smell of the vineyard - like inhaling birth. It awakens some ancestral, some primordial... anyway, some deeply imprinted, and probably subconscious place in my soul.
19) Yay! Faith gets to burn the British snob!
Spurrier: “These Californian wines are all…so good.”
Jo: “What were you expecting? Thunderbird?”
20) I do love Spurrier’s way of handling Jim.
21) Ugh…Jim…
Jim [to Spurrier]: “If there’s one thing I know it’s people.”
That has not proven to be true even a LITTLE bit during this movie! Like seriously. You misjudge people constantly because of your pride and your anxiety, dude. You don’t get people AT ALL.
22) The entire scene at the airport, where Spurrier and Bo are able to convince these random passengers heading to Paris to carry one bottle of wine each so they can get through customs, is also a great testament to the community and love for viniculture found in Napa. That right there is one of the things the film does VERY well. It also provides a nice rare moment in the film between Pine and Rickman.
23) When I first saw this when I was thirteen, the whole concept of the Brown Chardony stuck with me incredibly. Jim makes perfectly tasting Chardony, but it comes back brown for some reason. A visit to Bradley Whitford playing a professor of viniculture let’s us know this.
Saunders: “You can make wine TOO perfectly.”
There is a natural brown enzyme in chardony that is neutralized by air, so if no air gets in the bottles it stays brown. It is perfect because you don’t wine exposed to air too long.
Saunders: “Barrels of perfection.”
Of course we learn this after Jim has given off and sent the chardony to be dumped in a landfill, but fear not…
24) I LIVE for scenes like the one where Sam, Bo, and Gustavo realize that all the dreams they thought were lost have been saved by Jo. I mean oh my god their faces as they figure out! THANK GOD FOR FAITH!
And then the scene does the impossible and becomes even BETTER by showing us how Jim reacts!!! I wish I could find a clip of it to show you but HE TAKES A FUCKING SAMURAI SWORD TO OPEN THE BOTTLE!!! OH MY GOD HE’S JUST SO HAPPY, AND HE KISSES THE SECRETARY, AND I LOVE IT!!!
25) Jim FINALLY gives Bo the credit he deserves. Yes he started the movie sort of as a bum but when he started doing things right Jim didn’t give him credit because of his pride. And then he says Bo should represent them at the tasting. I love that. Redemption for Jim.
26) In a similar way to Sam sleeping with Gustavo feels unearned, Sam kissing Bo feels a little unearned. We get that he’s had a thing for her ever since she showed up, but she’s never seemed to really reciprocate anything more than friendship. I don’t know, it just feels weird to me.
27) The tasting is a nice way to end the film. For me, the whole brown chardony thing is the climax of the film. It is the moment of greatest tension for Jim, Bo, and everyone else and you just feel such a swell of joy when it is resolved. BUT this whole thing in Paris is a nice climax for Spurrier’s arc and a nice final note to end the film on. Watching the French wine snobs trying to figure out which is Californian wine and which is French is also fun.
28) God bless Dennis Farina.
Maurice [After Spurrier says Cali wines are “radical” and “unique”]: “Where I’m from they call it a left handed compliment. But I don’t think they have a word for it in England. It’s too embedded in their culture.”
(GIF source unknown [if this is your GIF please let me know].)
29) Dude, I love Spurrier’s face when he realizes that the wining wine is Chateau Montelana. I also love Bo’s face when he hears the winner. And then you can even see some pride on Spurrier’s face after the initial shock.
30) This is a nice summation of the film.
Spurrier: “We have shattered the myth of the invincible French vine.”
Bottle Shock is a nice treat. It is nice, escapist fare, with compelling performances from the whole cast, and writing which clearly communicates the passion felt by the characters in the film. From the cinematography to the score, it’s an underrated film I wish you will watch.

"Men and power: it's seriously a disease." — Trish Walker
Rachael Taylor has been doing excellent work on this series, but "AKA 99 Friends" is her best episode yet, as Trish comes door-to-door—and eventually face-to-face—with Will Simpson, the cop who tried to kill her in "AKA It's Called Whiskey."
Trish is an interesting character, with a lot of back story that's barely been hinted at so far. Her life as a child star, her abusive mother, her sisterly relationship with Jessica, are all subjects the show has touched upon but never really explained. (This is not a complaint: in fact, kudos to showrunner Melissa Rosenberg for trusting the audience to accept this emotional and biographical texture without needing to be spoon-fed exposition: it goes a long way towards making these characters feel like real people with complex histories.)
But what's important here, I think, is to remember that Trish had locked herself away in a virtual fortress even before she was attacked by Will, and even before Kilgrave returned. She was already traumatized, already defensive, already afraid. Even Trish's choice of profession—hosting a radio call-in show—allows her a degree of isolation and self-protection: she has found a way to use her voice, but from the safety of a booth where she does not have to make herself physically vulnerable. (It's a safety-barrier that is echoed in her door's intercom system, which gets a good workout this week.)
Now her safe spaces have all been compromised: last week she opened her door to the Kilgrave-controlled Will, and was nearly killed. (Whatever sense of confidence and power she had begun to regain from her Krav Maga training took a literal and spiritual beating.) She also, from the supposed safety of her booth, recklessly attacked Kilgrave on the air, but this week she is forced—at Jessica's urging—to walk that back, and apologize. It feels, as of course it would, like a violation: "I need a shower," she says to Jessica, after she has compromised her authenticity in this way, and surrendered this previous piece of safe ground.
It's no wonder that she is afraid when Will twice appears again at her door: first because he believes he killed her, and then later because he wants—somehow—to make it up to her.
This is as tricky an interpersonal negotiation as Jessica Jones has navigated yet. What is their relationship to each other? Are they victim and abuser, and therefore adversaries? Or are they both victims of the same abuser, and therefore comrades in recovery? Will wants to believe the latter, even though Jessica has already warned him: "You're not going to make her feel safe, Sergeant." Will's answer to this dilemma is to bring Trish a gift. "It's personal," he says, and when Trish opens the gift it turns out to be very personal indeed: it's a gun. Will, recognizing the physical power differential between them, tries to balance the scales the only way he knows how: by handing her what he thinks of as power. When Trish is finally able to let him into her apartment to talk face-to-face, their slightly flirtatious conversation takes place with the gun on the table between them. This is what's required to forge an equal, safe relationship between this man and this woman. (It reminded me of Jessica's speech in "AKA Crush Syndrome" about how she goes through life never feeling safe—a direct reference to Kilgrave, and a symbolic reference to the constant dangers that women have to deal with every day.)
And the Trish/Will relationship works on this symbolic level as well. If we see Kilgrave as the living personification of misogyny—and frankly I don't see that as much of a stretch—then this is an acknowledgement that both men and women are its victims, both shaped and weakened by a culture of toxic masculinity. Will wants to be a good man—he thinks of himself as a good man—but there are plenty of clues that he was an embodiment of dangerous masculinity even before he met Kilgrave. "I've spent my whole life protecting people," Will—the former soldier turned cop—tells Jessica. But his very next sentence is telling: "I did things in the line of duty, horrible things." Later, we see him lose his cool and brutally rough up Malcolm, a form of rage that clearly predates his encounter with Kilgrave. ("I know how to turn it off," he tells Jessica, as he tries to compose himself. "The paranoia and the panic…") Even his story to Trish is revealing, about how he once burned down his sister's Barbie Dream House enacting a "rescue" scenario with his G.I. Joes. "That was meant to be a story about how I've always been the guy saving people," Will says hopefully—but his masculine notions of "saving" women ends up in total destruction. ("I was committed to the scenario," he laughs.)
So I don't have high hopes for Will Simpson, unless his learning curve is steep and rapid. But I have hopes for Trish, who embodies—even in her fear and vulnerability—far more genuine strength and courage than Will himself does. And part of her strength is in the recognition that traditional notions of power are not the solution. Will gives her the gun, but it is not the gun that leads her to open the door. (The gun is a false idol: Audrey thinks a gun gives her power as well, but it doesn't.) What gives Trish strength is the courage to recognize that they are in this together, and hiding away is not the solution. "What Kilgrave did to you, he did to Jessica," she tells him, invoking the strongest person she knows. "It doesn't matter how strong you are." If there's hope, it's not to be found in barricades and weapons, but in sympathy, and human connection, and community.
...
The conversation between Trish and Will obviously parallels—or even foreshadows—an even trickier conversation that still needs to take place: the inevitable one between Luke and Jessica, in which she'll admit that she killed his wife while under Kilgrave's control. (I have a feeling forgiveness will not come quite so easily in that one.)

Thoughts on Entertainment Weekly’s First Look at “The Defenders”
At last! Here are our assorted thoughts on the main points of the Entertainment Weekly article.
On a chilly December afternoon, inside a brightly lit set, the stars of Marvel and Netflix’s small-screen superhero universe-- Charlie Cox (Matt Murdock, a.k.a. Daredevil), Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), Mike Colter (Luke Cage), and Finn Jones (Danny Rand, a.k.a. Iron Fist)-- are still waiting to film their first scene as a group for their summer 2017 team-up, Marvel’s The Defenders.
We finally have a release date! Sort of. Summer is much sooner than we were expecting this to air, and it again brings up the question of when, exactly, the Punisher show is coming out. They started filming that first, but it is, after all, a longer production. Will that be out this upcoming winter, then?
We’re also becoming more and more convinced that-- barring the possibility of a last-minute surprise announcement-- Frank Castle will not be appearing in this team-up. As we’ve said before, as much as we like Frank, we’re okay with that. We’re worried that eight episodes will not be enough time to build satisfying character-arcs for the four protagonists we already have-- never mind throwing the Punisher into the mix.
After investigating the corporation for different reasons, each has arrived separately at the offices of Midland Circle (a name that should sound familiar to Daredevil fans as the shady operation behind a giant, literal plot hole in season 2). “Every one of them is following their own trail of bread crumbs, trying to unpack a mystery in New York,” explains showrunner Marco Ramirez, who produced Daredevil’s first season before co-showrunning the second. “We wanted them all caught off guard. Once they’re in that room together, it’s kind of like, ‘Oh, s---, who are you?”
Some more great insight into the narrative structure of the show. For this to really feel like a partnership of equals (rather than a story with a bunch of guest-stars) each of these characters needs their own significant chunk of screentime, and each needs to bring something unique and vital to the team. Thus, it’s promising to hear that each is going to have their own plotline, likely based on experiences and information provided in their solo shows. Again, we come back to the threads connecting these narratives: we know Midland Circle is connected to the Hand, but we can guess it also is tied to the mysteries of Jessica and Luke’s origin accidents/IGH, and we’d bet good money on it being associated with Rand Corp as well. We love the idea of them all meeting each other (in their superhero identities, anyway) for the first time at the same time. Split-second, unplanned team-ups are the most entertaining team-ups.
At the beginning, [Danny]’s a fish out of water upon returning to New York after surviving a plane crash as a child and being raised by monks in the mystical city of K’un-Lun. According to Jones, Danny will continue that search on The Defenders: “He’s craving desperately for family, for help, for guidance, for people to learn from, and for a team,” the actor muses. “But because of what happens in Iron Fist, he’s very untrusting. It’s really his way or no way.”
Which is why Danny may be the key to the Defenders’ formation. “Danny has drive,” Jones teases. “He drives all of the Defenders to get behind him to solve the…” He trails off, noticing the publicist in the corner looking up. “Issue.”
It’s really disappointing, and kind of strange, that EW didn’t do an Iron Fist feature (unless it’s still forthcoming!), so we appreciate the insights provided here. Everything we hear about this interpretation of Danny’s journey makes us more and more excited. Identity and belonging are huge factors for him in the comics, particular early-on. Having left his home and arrived in a world he barely remembers, where he has no friends and quite a few enemies, he is in desperate search for someone and something to which he can dedicate himself. In the comics he is taken in by Colleen and her father, through whom he meets Misty, her partner Rafael Scarfe (sadly dead in the MCU...), and eventually, Luke. This family of friends helps him to acclimate to his new life in New York, and joining Luke’s Heroes for Hire business gives him a sense of purpose. We’re excited to see him take this same personal journey in the MCU-- this time with a few additional players.
It’s not surprising to hear that he may be the catalyst for the team’s creation. Finn Jones commented in the article’s accompanying video that Danny is “the one who knows, really, what’s going on”. In this universe the Iron Fist is connected to the Hand, and so if any of the four were to come to the table with prior, in-depth knowledge of whatever the Hand are doing now, it would be Danny.
Well, and Stick. Gosh, we’re so excited to see Danny interact with Stick!
“We knew it would take something massive to pull these four characters from their individual worlds to work together,” he says, “but also small enough that it felt like it existed in our world.” What, or who, could possibly walk that line?
Sigourney Weaver, it turns out-- as in the Sigourney Weaver, of Alien and Avatar fame. Her evildoing Alexandra, whom Ramirez describes as an “utter badass,” is not based on a comic-book character. “Sigourney is the kind of person you can buy as the smartest person in the room, who you can also buy as a person holding a flamethrower. Her character is a very powerful force in New York City. She’s everything Sigourney is: sophisticated, intellectual, dangerous.” He pauses. “I’m sorry. I can only say a bunch of adjectives right now.”
So it sounds like Alexandra is ...the MCU version of Sigourney Weaver? Cool! Not basing her on a comic book character is a surprising choice. On the one hand, it’s a little disappointing, considering the sheer number of fantastic pre-existing supervillains there are to choose from. But at the same time, making her a new character is smart because it means she will be a complete surprise. We will legitimately not know anything about her before watching the show, which will be fun.
In this case the team had to juggle four entirely different world with four leads: Daredevil is an ultraviolent law drama, Jessica Jones a heady noir, Luke Cage a hip-hop-infused character study, and Iron Fist a martial-arts extravaganza. Instead of shoehorning them all into a whole new genre, Ramirez says they tried to emphasize what grounded each of the shows: the characters’ need to find the truth.
(”Martial arts extravaganza”! Is it March yet?). We’ve talked before about how much we love the fact that each of the shows has its own distinct personality, and cannot wait to see what tone the team-up will take. We’re hoping for something a bit lighter than average.
Because of that, there’s no leader of the Defenders. Instead, misanthropic Jessica and people-pleasing Matt have a cat-and-mouse relationship, while Luke and Danny share some mentor-mentee chemistry. And what about Jessica and Luke, who, uh, had “coffee” on Jessica Jones? “I don’t think I can tell you,” Ritter says, adding that the pair, aside from crossing paths in that first scene, haven’t had a conversation yet.
No worries-- they will, says Ramirez: “It was almost like a checklist. ‘Where’s our great Luke and Jessica scene? Where’s our Danny and Matt scene?’” And not just for the leads. Supporting players like Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) and Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) from Daredevil will enter the fray, while Trish Walker (Rachael Taylor) and Jeri Hogarth (Carrie-Anne Moss) from Jessica Jones are set to assist the team. Misty Knight (Simone Missick) from Luke Cage will cross paths with Jessica, and of course, Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson), now Luke’s love interest, will be ready to patch up any wounds. “We look up at a bunch of boards in the writers’ room and say, ‘Oh, wait, we haven’t seen an interaction between these two,’” Ramirez says. “So what does that mean? Where does that lead?”
(First of all, Misty is going to arrest Jessica, and it’s going to be awesome.) Ultimately, character interactions are what we’re looking forward to the most in this show, so it’s great that the showrunners have that same priority. (A good plot would be nice too, but honestly, our requirements are very minimal in that area. It’s going to be amazing no matter what.) To start, given that this is a group of strong-willed, independent superheroes, it makes sense that there wouldn’t be a leader. As we said above, all four of them need to be treated equally by the narrative. Obviously, we’re unbelievably psyched to see all of the character interactions we love so much in the comics and haven’t seen in live action yet: Luke and Danny, the ultimate dynamic duo; Danny and Misty (we’re still hoping she might pop up in Iron Fist, but there’s no guarantee of that); Misty and Colleen, the other ultimate dynamic duo; Matt’s interactions with... well, everybody... But if possible, we’re even more excited for all of the character dynamics that have never been explored before. One of the out-of-nowhere most fascinating relationships in all of the shows so far has been Karen Page’s shared story arc with-- of all people-- the Punisher! This show, as crowded as it’s going to be, is ripe for all kinds of fun and fascinating interactions, and we absolutely cannot wait.
Sometimes, it’s teaming up to face a threat. Other times, it’s simply talking and connecting. Cox treasures those smaller interactions from the comics: “One of my favorite images is from a Daredevil issue with Luke Cage and Daredevil on a rooftop eating cheeseburgers. I love that.”
Same here, Charlie! (We assume he’s referring to Scott Kolins’ cover for Marvel Team-Up (2004) #9. Charlie Cox has great taste.):
The Alias Investigations P.I. may have wiped that smile off of Kilgrave’s face, but her takedown of the mind controller in Jessica Jones’ first season brings more interest to her work. “She’s still dealing with the aftermath of Kilgrave, and now she’s dealing with ‘success’-- and not well,” Ritter explains. “People want her to work for them, she’s getting a lot of business, and she’s not ready for any of that. She hasn’t changed, but her environment has, and there’s no handbook for how to exist in a world where you are now popular.”
We don’t have much to say about this, beyond the fact that we can’t wait to watch Jessica deal with unwanted fame. This, mixed with her lingering Kilgrave-related trauma (as mentioned by Jessica Jones showrunner Melissa Rosenberg in regards to Season 2), will make for an interesting combination. Since we know she will be spending some time with Matt in his civilian life, it seems likely that he could be one of the new clients alluded to above. Either that, or he gets her out of jail after Misty arrests her. Or both! We’d settle for both.
[Daredevil] ended his second season in a fittingly hellish place: alone. His relationship with his best friend Foggy came undone, their law firm Nelson & Murdock was dismantled, and Elektra died fighting the Hand, only to have her corpse recovered by the evil organization. In the final minutes of the finale, Matt comes clean about his secret identity to Karen, but it may already be too late to make amends. The Defenders picks up a few months afterward, Cox says, and Matt’s thinking about leaving his role as the Man Without Fear. “One of Matt’s big things is trying to protect the people he loves, and he’s failed,” the actor explains. “He’s left holding the dead body of a loved one, and so I think he’s tried to turn a corner. It’s almost like quitting an addiction… When we meet him at the beginning of The Defenders, I’m not sure he’s completely found peace with that idea. He’s doing the best with what he has.”
This is really interesting, because it’s not at all how we interpreted the ending of DD Season 2. His decision to reveal his identity to Karen seemed like it would have been born of a decision to maintain that identity, and to keep operating as Daredevil in spite of all of the pain it had just caused him. But regardless, it also makes perfect sense that Elektra’s death would lead him to question the effectiveness of his superhero career, so this isn’t necessarily strange or out-of-character. Regardless, we’re really excited to see how Matt handles this, and to see how this dilemma this will impact his relationships with everyone else-- Karen in particular, since she only just found out his secret.
Luke may have been carted back to Seagate Prison at the end of Luke Cage, but don’t worry-- he won’t be there for long. “It’s safe to say Cage is not going to spend the entire season of The Defenders behind bars,” Colter says, laughing. “He’s been able to come clean and deal with his past.” [...] The positive outlook helps when it comes to joining the Defenders. Colter says Luke acts as “the conciliator” for the group, and Ramirez agrees: “Luke is someone who’s, in a very mature way, compartmentalized his life.” Still, that doesn’t mean Luke is invincible. “He’s openly walking around as a hero,” Ramirez teases. “There’s a lot of pressure that comes with that.”
We figured Luke wouldn’t be in jail for long, though we hope it’s long enough for us to at least learn who his lawyer is! If the group did have a leader, we figured it would (or should, anyway) be Luke. Of all of them, he is the most at home in his own life right now, and in the best emotional state for leadership. Jessica ended her show in denial about her own heroism, Matt is in the process of rebuilding his tattered life and relationships... and we don’t know exactly where Danny will end up (beyond being “untrusting”) at the end of his solo show, but Luke’s situation is still looking pretty good in comparison. (Which is saying something, since he ends the season in jail.). We can definitely imagine him acting as the group’s “conciliator”, though we wish him luck with that...
“This is my version of Iron Fist, this is [showrunner] Scott Buck’s and Netflix’s and Marvel TV’s version of Iron Fist,” Jones says. “We are dealing with an entity that is in and of itself.” [...] When the story begins, Danny has returned to New York City 15 years after the plane crash that left him orphaned in the mystical city of K’un-Lun, where he was raised and trained by monks. “He’s a child trapped in a man’s body,” Jones says. “He’s an incredibly fierce warrior, but he doesn’t know who he is.” In other words, he has to grow up-- and grow up fast. “Iron Fist is like Danny in his adolescence, and The Defenders is like Danny taking responsibility and moving forward with his purpose,” Jones explains.
More Iron Fist tidbits, a lot of which we’re going to be addressing in the near future, as we head into the final countdown to March 17. We’re still paranoid that they’re going to dial down the magical elements too much. (In the video, Finn Jones describes the Iron Fist as an “energy force” that people can be trained to channel-- implying that they may be turning the chi of Shou-Lao into something that originates internally, and doing away with Shou-Lao altogether.) We’re still intrigued by the 15-year timespan, as it relates to K’un-Lun’s cosmological behavior. (In the comics the city intersects with Earth once every ten years.) We’re still curious about what Danny’s motivation for returning to Earth will be, since they seem to be getting rid of his revenge quest. Finn’s description of the show as “an entity that is in and of itself” suggests that this is going to be a completely new approach to Iron Fist-- which, ultimately, and despite the fact that it might mean no dragons, is very exciting.
The references here to Danny’s lost sense of identity and emotional turmoil are spot-on, and exactly what we wanted. Identity is a huge factor for Danny in the comics-- he’s still figuring it out even now, after his character has been around for forty years. When Danny first leaves K’un-Lun he is lost. He has left his home to return to a place that is now alien to him. He is the champion and protector of a city that he is locked out of. His whole identity for the past ten years has been wrapped up in becoming the Iron Fist, and once he comes back to New York, where being the Iron Fist has no meaning, he finds that he doesn’t know who he really is anymore, and that he has lost touch with whole sections of his past. There’s a beautiful scene in Iron Fist volume one in which Danny returns to his childhood home for the first time, and breaks down sobbing as the full weight of his parents’ deaths finally-- after ten years-- hits him. The description of Danny as “a child trapped in a man’s body” is a great one, not only in that it likely describes Danny’s naivety about life in New York, but also because it acknowledges that he missed quite a few formative experiences and is only now coming to terms with this. We will say, in conjunction with this, that we hope they also spend some time developing and exploring his (quite idyllic) life in K’un-Lun, rather than just focusing on the consequences of his not being on Earth for fifteen years. It’s important to also know what he lost in choosing to return to his roots.
In any case, we’ll dig more into all of this in our analysis of the new Iron Fist trailer!
