you know what i didn't start "hating" trish until she started using malcolm, a recovering addict who she knew had feelings for her since jessica warned her about it. i didn't hate her until she pushed drugs on him. she made the choice to relapse and to take a drug she knew nothing about and put herself at risk, in the end after years of staying sober her desire for power won and in a split second she fucked her life up but she didn't have to try and drag malcolm down with her

oh and trish was doing shittier things before she was on drugs. you can’t blame all her wrong doings this season on her being under the influence ‘cause she wasn’t when she used her best friend’s family’s ashes to emotionally manipulate her into pursuing a story jessica had repeatedly told her she wanted no part of. trish acted selfishly this season and the worst part is i didn’t hate her when she was on drugs i felt sorry for her, i hated her for all the bullshit she pulled beforehand

OKAY BUT HERE’S THE FATAL FLAW IN THESE ASKS: I’M NOT EXCUSING HER BEHAVIOR.

So Trish has always wanted power. Yes, a huge facet of her wanting power has to do with wanting it for herself. While we’re at it, can we also acknowledge Trish was an abuse victim and her very specific form of childhood abuse was to have her agency removed from her from day one? Trish wanting power translates into what we hear her say in s1: No one touches me anymore unless I want them to. Trish takes power into her own hands when she can’t come by it on her own or start with it. In s1 it was the Krav Maga. In s2, unfortunately, it was the PEDs. This entire season, as Rachael Taylor said at Paleyfest, was Trish on her own journey of self-identification, demanding respect she doesn’t feel she ever receives. Did anybody in this room say it was positive or that it didn’t hurt anyone else? No. It was a whole world of downward spiral wherein she acted like a motherfucker in order to achieve her personal journey. Was Trish right? NO. Was she doing it for her own character growth? YES. SHE’S A REAL PERSON. DON’T HATE HER FOR BEING A REAL PERSON.

While we’re at it, hey, how about you stop being gross and not holding Malcolm accountable for his own actions? Yeah, Trish used him for her own purposes, but he was still a lucid, level-headed person in control of his actions. Trish was the one wildly inhibited and while that doesn’t excuse her behavior, she was the one whose actions weren’t in-step with themselves. Malcolm chose to sleep with Trish. Malcolm took the inhaler and chose to use again. He even acknowledges that Trish was bad for him when she shows up at his apartment, but he doesn’t absolve himself of blame. He takes the blame for using. Don’t put Malcolm’s self-control on Trish. If we’re gonna pull that, we also have to blame Jessica for the whiskey-spiked coffee Trish accidentally sipped in Defenders because it was there and that still counts in the grand scheme of sobriety. Are we really going to try to divert blame out of the field of a man who literally takes accountability for his own actions and admits that he was wrong? Stop canonizing and infantalizing Malcolm, it’s gross.

I don’t have a word to say in her favor about the ashes. It was truly the lowest of the low. It was classic, self-righteous shitheel Trish Walker convinced that she had Jess’s best interests at heart so this is what has to be done because it’s right. I understand her thought process and it’s very in-line with who she can be as a person, and how she’s come to believe in any scenario that the end justifies the means. That’s exactly what she thinks because she’s impulsive. That she can do this horrible thing but if the outcome is positive, it can be forgiven and forgotten and excused because it helped. Trish looks at the big picture and not the small one. She doesn’t pay attention to what gets in her way along the process. Is that fucking vile? Oh yeah, absolutely. The ashes was an awful thing to do. Literally staying with Griffin and then finally breaking it off with him (even if he, too, was using her), was still an awful thing to do. Using Malcolm when she knew he liked her? Still awful, even if he was lucid in the situation and it was his own damn choice. (No, seriously, do we want to reduce Malcolm to his dick, too?)

Yes, Trish acted selfishly. You know what she was doing? Using. Not dealing with her own abuse trauma. (By the way, we conveniently forget she also humiliated herself to shreds and tore open old wounds just to try to help Jessica. Remember how many times she used Patsy and hurt herself deliberately in order to try to advance the situation? But really, go on about how she was just a piece of shit all season.) Trish was trying to take the situation, and control, into her own hands in a scrambling desire to fix the whole problem because that’s what Trish does. She always thinks and thought like this. The drugs exacerbated it, doubtless, but this is the same Trish we see in s1. The difference? That Trish was mostly right, several steps ahead of the game whenever she could be, and Jessica’s main and most valued contact in s1. Her partner. S2 Jessica isn’t isolated to only Trish anymore as a most valued contact the same way, and when Trish is needed less, Trish spirals and needs to be needed again. To some degree, she has to be the center of Jessica’s life. She does a good job of trying to be healthy about it. And then, sometimes, she does a really bad job, and s2 happens. If you can afford the understanding to Jessica for entrapping Trish in her own apartment by paparazzi and not being there for her at all, even when she KNEW Trish had relapsed, regardless of the situation with Alisa– (while we’re at it, can we mention her pawning Trish off on Dorothy in the flashback? But that’s all cool, right?) –then we can afford understanding to Trish for being a flawed, fucked up asshole.

Thank you goodnight please leave my essay. Every single person in this season was morally grey and is deserving of criticism, not just Trish. Appreciate her development and then the fact that by the end she’s trying to put herself back together. Don’t blindly hate her for it. She’s multifaceted and interesting and flawed and deserves to be recognized FOR her flaws.
