Saturday Morning Vid Recs - Women!

Back in January I told @poetikat that I wanted to share just a fraction of vids I’ve seen since I started vidding in 2007 that I love. Taken me forever to format the links into a post to share. I have several more posts half-finished and may show up on your dashboard in following weeks or months.

I'm reccing vids that are at least 1 year old, but most of these vids are 4 and 8 and 12 years old and sometimes older. These vids feature a variety of sources, characters, genres of music, genres of shows. Each of these vidders have their own style and the way they approach a song or a source. I love these vids, they're fun to watch, they're hot, mesmerizing, engaging, thoughtful, full of love and horniness and BAMFs and joy and struggle. I love. I love.

Learning to Fly by rhoboat. Beautiful Boxer (2004). A movie vid based on trans Thai boxer Nong Toom’s life. This song is so good showing her journey to learning to find herself and fly! Ako Te Reo by bironic. Rūrangi (2020). Ana learning Te Reo Māori. This vid is so wonderful! It's never too late to learn. Come on Feet by JinkyO. Pumzi (2009). The song choice and pacing is incredible for this Kenyan sci-fi film. Something has to keep us moving forward. Black Nails by fightingarrival. A League of their Own (2022). A Max vid that is a great look at her journey on the show. This vid makes me want to rewatch all her scenes all over again. Here, take this L. Damned if She Do by chaila. Borgen. This source is the Danish political drama Borgen. Birgette is so kick-ass and this song is perfect for her. She come alive when she dying. "Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power." Strict Machine by such_heights. Doctor Who. River Song. I’m in love with River Song so of course I have to rec this. I get high on a buzz then a rush when I'm plugged in you. Counting Stars by beccatoria. DC Animated Wonder Woman. Beccatoria has always done such a great job of vidding animated source and WOMEN!!!! Superstar by @heresluck. Buffy the Vampire Slayer. A Faith vid. This (one of many) epic Faith vids to come out of vidding fandom over the years. This vid lives rent free in my head. But I would pay this vid to live in my head because I love it so much. Never gonna be the same again.

Down & Dirty by @sweeter-than. Killjoys. A Dutch fanvid! A++ song choice for a character study showing her relationship with the Jacobi brothers and her general awesomeness. Make way. Cut Like a Buffalo by kiki_miserychic. Empire. Cookie Lyon fanvid! Cookie has all the skin in the game and she is so good at music, but damn there’s so much bullshit she has to deal with along the way. Yeah, you know I look like a woman but I / Cut like a buffalo / Stand up like a tower, tall / Then I fall just like a domino. Control: A Monstress Fanvid by garrideb. Based on the comic Monstress. You know this Halsey song + any woman who has been Going Through It is going to be a fucking ride. Great editing, amazing art. Fortunate One by @moocowmoocow The Expanse. CAMINA!!! DRUMMER!!!! A Sleater-Kinney cover of Fortunate Son is 10 million kinds of brilliance here for Camina and this source. I ain't no fortunate one. Celebrity Skin by @some-stars. Black Sails. This is an Eleanor and Max character vid. I repeat: Elenor and Max vid to Courtney Love’s music. Heed the warnings. This vid is so goddamn good. It better be worth it. Double Woman by starlady. Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame. So much awesomeness packed into this vid. Through the camera lens re-editing history gives imagination to the people. Wu Zetian and Shangguang Jing'er are awesome. Hooray for awesome ladies of the Tang Dynasty! Titanium by giandujakiss. Wonder Woman (the original tv show). She is titanium! Suffering Sappho.

Mirrors by @kuwdora. Snow White and the Huntsman. Queen/Snow. Lots of fantasy imagery and bdsm like themes since the Queen wants to suck the youth from Snow. Sex. Love. Control. Vanity. Lightning Field by bradcpu, a Legend of the Seeker fanvid of Cara/Kahlan. The imagery in this vid is outstanding, the tone the atmosphere. I have rewatched this more times than I can count. Strike me down, Give it everything you've got. Hands Away by chaila and beccatoria. Sarah Connor Chronicles/Fringe. Sarah/Olivia constructed reality fanvid that is constructed really really fucking well that you might forget that these are two different shows. I can't reach you. (Or, two messiahs walk into an alternate reality) Hurricane by @laurashapiro. Farscape and Battlestar Galactica, Starbuck/Aeryn.This vid is so epic and hot and incredible...Hot and sexy and can’t take your eyes off them. Two pilots walk into a bar. I Wanna Go by millylicious, a multi-source action vid Angelia Jolie tribute. This is fun and delightful. Space Girl by charmax. Multi-source space women and girls! My momma told me I should never watch Sci-fi but I did, I did, I did. Celebration by sweetestrain. Pop divas. Madonna, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, etc. Another one of my favorites of favorites. The connected imagery between all of these music videos still blows my mind, but goes to show you how pop music continues to build and evolve from each other. Plus sexy dancing. If it makes you feel good. Your Song by anoel. Multi-fandom. One of the most epic sapphic/wlw vids out there. I don’t wanna hear sad songs anymore, I only wanna hear love songs.

Something something Sedna of the many names, Arnarquagsag, Nerivik, Nuliajuk, the one who would not marry, the wife of all.

What's you name, girl?

Navarro, Eve, Angie, Evangeline, Missy, your mother never told you your real name (the one of the Real People) and some think you have forgotten it.

Sedna of the many names many stories Arctic wide, Alaska to Greenland, many stories and in all of them she lives under the sea, in all of them she ends up there because of her father.

Her mother? sometimes a shaman (voices. episodes.) sometimes entirely absent from the narrative (died in chilbirth), sometimes a background character following her husband.

Her father? oh, he always throws her in the sea, sometimes in a panic, sometimes in a rage. She would not marry the man he told her to.

Why?

Well, is that the right question?

She would not marry the man he told her to, because she was already married to her dog who was a man, a shapeshifter, so they kept it in secret.

So many secrets here... do we trust Qavviq the dog-man, the home-brewer? or is he gonna die a terrible death?

i dunno, man. Annie keeping it secret. Danvers keeping it secret. But Everyone here knows.

Sedna whose fingers were cut went she went overboard and she tried to hold on to her father's kayak. Sometimes her whole hands, bit by bit.

So many fathers here, too. Hank, raised by an animal to act like an animal. His son trying to be better than him. The son's son drawing the woman with no hands, no fingers, spooking his father.

What is it with white people getting spooked about other people's religion? Not me, i was raised catholic. A lady with no fingers is no big deal. But maybe i mean white-white. Not opening that particular can of worms right now.

Oh and of course Travis. Fucking Travis Cohle. And his little interpretive dance. That was a man drowning. Or several. Didn't Lund cough up some filthy water when he woke up corpsicled? Cause of death: Spooketh. But also maybe drowned. 

The lady under the sea, the lady with no fingers, cannot untangle her hair. Her hair traps the marine animals and she gets agitated and there is storm and famine. Her hair under the sea, her hair maybe like the sea, and who hasn't dyed their hair sea-blue, sea-green, when they missed so much? i have. Wear the monster's face, wear her hair, whatever you can manage.

The lady with the sea-hair beautifully painted on the door to the warehouse where the people gather. And the people are pissed. 

Something in the water, and no one seems to be asking questions. Not even the wrong ones. Tsalal is the mine is the thing under the ice, now she's awake and y'all done fucked up.

The lady with no fingers that lives under the sea gets pissed off sometimes. Main thing driving her mad is greed and ungratefulness, apparently.Those who take more than they need and those who do not honor their prey. The seals have souls, and so do the whales and the walruses. Those are Sedna’s children, not exactly like children, born from her chopped fingers like Eve from Adam’s rib. 

Sedna (90377 Sedna) is also a dwarf planet hanging around Ceres. This season feels like the Belt. As oppresive as S1 made Louisiana look (humid, hot, that heavy heavy sky) this creeps me out more. What's worse, air thick with miasma or no air at all? Women walking out to the dark, a tiny circle of light and then the vast nothing. Very cosmic horror. Also i miss Naomi Nagata and i miss Camina Drummer. Funny that Danvers' kid was named Holden. But i digress.

You know how scientists are, naming stuff after goddesses. Pieces of rock, sometimes lifeforms. She's awake alright. 

Who are you, girl? Eve? An angel? I am reminded too that Evangelion means Good News. Are you catholic, Navarro? Was your father catholic? What did he drink?

Something in the water, something in the ice. Crabs are bottom feeders, aren't they? How fucked up is an ecosystem where the carrion-eaters die off? Maybe stuff isn't dying at the rate it should. Caribou spook relatively easy, but maybe they know something we don't, too. Micro earthquakes and magnetic fields and shit. Guess we’ll find out.

Tatiana Maslany in Orphan Black - She's amazing. I love every clone she plays. I would literally be watching thinking, so-and-such hasn't had any lines recently. That's a bummer. I really like that actress. And then remember that they are all played by the same person.

Kaylee in Firefly/Serenity - she's amazingly feminine and also a badass ship engineer. It was love at first sight. What can I say?

Contessa in Worm by wildbow - I Love this character's superpower. I named my planning system after it: Path to Victory. 432 steps remaining.

The Hippopotamus in But Not the Hippopotamus by Sandra Boynton - I am the Hippopotamus. I watch from a distance and often miss out because socializing is scary. Also, this story is amazing and everyone should read it whether you have children or not.

Kosmo in Love You to Bits - If you haven't played, you should. This chubby little character is completely lacking gender identifiers imo, so I decided that they're enby. Also, they're dating a high-femme robot. The whole thing is beautiful and entertaining.

Uncle Iroh - Maybe it's because I was 40 when I first watched atla, but Iroh is the best. He drops so much wisdom and he does so in a very indirect way. He's life goals, you know?

Jemmy in Destiny's Road by Larry Niven - I am a huge sucker for the cook who saves the world, and this book delivers.

Angela Montenegro in Bones - There's a scene where Bones is saying how everyone on her team is a genius, "except Angela, of course." I chewed rocks and spit nails about it. Angela, with minimal formal training, does data mining, image manipulation, and other computer magic that normal people would require a PhD and a team of programmers to accomplish. Not a genius my ass.

Camina Drummer in The Expanse (show version) - She's the best. What can I say?

Sarah Stanley in The Story Girl by Lucy Maud Montgomery - My favorite character from childhood. I wanted to have her social abilities so badly.

so i was rewatching the ankawala one ship short (known colloquially in my household as Six of the Most Emotionally Devastating Minutes of My Life) for, you know... reasons... and for the first time i actually paid attention to the info that's displayed on drummer's hand terminal during these videos.

first of all, i love that this message is saved in drummer's favorites. i mean, of course it is, but. cute. and then we have these categories listed to the left: naomi, behemoth, music, birthday, beratna, shipmang. all well and good, although as someone who is (maybe) (just slightly) invested in the enduring love between these two, i'm giving "beratna" the side-eye insofar as it could be read to imply that they're like, bros. but okay, fine, whatever, we are used to this sort of thing in the femslash trenches, we soldier ever onward.

we also get to see a list of a few of drummer's other favorites:

the text on the right is gibberish, as far as i can tell, but the way the messages are numbered seems to imply that drummer gets a LOT of messages. (girl, this is why you need a separate phone for work.)

anyway. back to naomi.

this one is also in drummer's favorites (can you blame her? and also spoiler: they all are). and it's got similar categories to the previous message: naomi, rocinante, ilus, beratna, shipmang.

still slightly annoyed by the "beratna" category, i move onto the final message:

annnnnd here is where i started laughing and have been unable to stop. we've got our usual categories here: naomi, rocinante, beratna, and shipmang. but that category in the middle? it's a little hard to see...

but that says fucking GIRL POWER.

oooookay. so that is (a) absurdly hilarious, and (b) clear proof that whatever in-universe messaging program they use has GOT to be automatically categorizing these messages. because you cannot convince me that there is any galaxy in any universe in all of time and space where camina drummer – who has just allowed one of her family members to be murdered to save naomi's family, and, by extension, naomi – would watch this absolutely gut-wrenching message, get to the end, think for a moment, and then say to herself, "yeah, i'm gonna go ahead and file this one under 'girl power.'"

girl power. honestly.

so. in conclusion: that beratna category is bullshit and draomi is real.

(carmilla anon) i watched it reading along with the official twitter/tumblr accounts (there were bits i was like "oh this must've been so cool live!"). s1 specially feels so much like *theater* with all the long takes/fixed camera. a lot happens off screen sure but they tried to include so much of the action using only the actors' physicality. i was impressed! (i was also amused by the different ways they tried to fit that one tall TALL actress in the frame).

it was fascinating to peek at (what's left) of its fan culture as an outsider but i am sure it could feel deeply personal in uncomfortable ways to revisit if you were *there* so i feel you.

yeah i recall it being like a very fun live experience with lots of material outside the videos themselves which i think is something interesting about that era of web productions that there was like more of the veil coming down there wasnt as much of the distance between say online personas and actual life or anonymity of internet media of the 2000s but also kind of being tongue in cheek about like well the idea of "real" internet personas and showing ur face because of course this was material in character for the most part tho the actors were also giving interviews and kind of blurring that boundary more naturally i guess than normal actors and i think utilizing the space of the internet to craft a story and the fact it was like riffing on the vlog format popular on youtube at the time and such idk interesting slice of time they perhaps handled the collapse of like the lines between fiction and reality more naturally than regular actors in major tv shows but it was also still quite small and niche so probably less weird idk miniature micro fame or whatever wow u know i never saw the film they made i see they leveled up to getting canadian actors niche known for playing gay characters on genre shows after or right around being in that film (cara gee as camina drummer in the expanse and dominique provost chalkley as waverly earp from wynonna earp lol)

i believe the actors who played laura and carmilla made another webseries or movie or something together capitalizing on their extremely niche internet gay popularity for a minute which i found fascinating but idk whats really happened seems most of the people involved have really only continued to make webseries but i guess the bottoms kinda fallen out of the world of internet media despite the world being so online.. sad

Favourite character: Camina 'Live shamed and die empty' Drummer 🥰🥰🥰

Funniest character: Hmm..it's not exactly a laugh riot of a show, but I remember thinking Avasarala's bodyguard Cotyar had some good dry humor lines.

Best-looking character: Probably Drummer again, although Avasarala and her outfits get an honorable mention.

3 favourite ships: The Roci, the Razorback, and Medina Station. 😜The Belter polycule, Camina/Naomi...maaaybe Amos/Clarissa? Naomi/Jim are ok and kind of sweet but...eh, kinda boring.

Least favourite character: Oh there was no shortage of odious characters: Inaros, Errinwright, Murtry, Strickland, Gao...honestly it's a toss-up between Strickland and Gao, I think, they were both pretty irredeemable. So was Inaros, of course, but he felt less cold-blooded than the other two.

Least favourite ship: Miller and Julie Mao, if that was a ship, or maybe Alex/Bobbie because Cas Anvar ruined a good character with his bs gdit.

Reason why I watch it: Honestly it might be the best show I've ever watched. I love plenty of light-hearted, fun-but-kinda-silly shows, and sometimes hard drama isn't my favorite, but my god The Expanse is just incredible. Virtually every character is rich, nuanced, human. The diversity is clearly intentional and yet it feels effortless and natural - it just makes sense. There are hard sci-fi elements and yet the story and characters are grounded in very believable and relatable Earthbound issues.

Why I started watching it: Word of mouth and good buzz, I think. The shock events of the pilot had me hooked pretty much immediately.

WIP Wednesday, to continue on from this piece from last week.

Don't know why I decided to draw with a pen like I'm back in high school, but it was fun! More shading and details need to be added for sure on this.

Decided to have a couple shot of Tech and Sjael at Glitch and Tech's wedding on Pabu (They're Techs from a different reality: Tech does not have multiple wives, lol).

This would be a few months after both Far Past the Ring and Into the Techiverse. Tech's an officer within the Transport Union under Camina Drummer, he officially goes by 'Teki Drummer', and he and Sjael have tied the knot with the Rocinante crew and Clone Force 99 in attendance.

Their families are safely on Medina Station, and they are starting to show that: Tech's got a beard and both he and Sjael are rocking comfortable, but fancy, duds for this ceremony. Of course Tech is never going to give up those damn pouches, where do you think he puts his data pad/cigars/flasks/fidget spinners?

The Expanse - 6x06 (SERIES FINALE)

Loved it. Let this be the tldr before I ramble on, I loved it. This finale, this final season, this show. They did me justice, I am satisfied. I am emotional.

where do i even start fuck, SPOILERS!

Okay cue the ramble apologies in advance for the long post.

Oh my god the different fight sequences I didn’t think they would even go off like that firstly Drummer and her band of Belters thinking they were only going up against some frigates but it was the Pella disguised like the Roci a few seasons back god damn. It was a miracle that Camina made it out of that alive and that decision by the pirate guy whose name escapes me really helped turn the tide. Amazing.

Then the Rocinante in the ring space HOLY SHIT that was so incredible wow. Bobbie BOBBIE facing all of those guns and her manoeuvre was exactly the same as when we first meet her on the Mars training course in season 2!!! I was sobbing. Amos going to shield her when she was down i simply cannot I love them both so much. PEACHES earning her keep, I was so scared for her because of her diagnosis and thinking she might faint I genuinely thought she died fixing the reactor problem but then Naomi going down to help and check on her, my emotions I love this found family.

THE SCENE IN THE KITCHEN. Did I mention that I love this Rocinante family so goddamn much and they even referenced Alex again and left an empty seat for him I was in floods of tears. Its always the scenes in the kitchen of them eating together throughout the show, firstly with Miller, then toasting to Miller after his sacrifice, after Bobbie joined the ship, then this final one with Clarissa before we knew what their fate would be.

Naomi thinking she killed/sent her son off to his death with the entities at the Ring gate broke me, that little flashback to baby Filip I could not handle it. Her courage and willingness to do what needed to be done even with such a huge sacrifice whew. Naomi Nagata the woman that you are.

Jumping to Laconia real quick Cara is crazy I feel so sorry for her parents goodness gracious, her brother is a zombie, I predicted correctly that the scene from the trailer was from his perspective and that whole storyline this season just confirms that no matter the focus on what our Roci team or the politicians are doing, there is always going to be some mad protomolecule shit going on in the universe that they have no idea about. This is the world they live in now, may as well embrace it.

Look at Jim turning the tides at the end and making Drummer the President of Ring transportation you go king I knew you’d never want to be in the position. It was so funny when they all turned to look at him at the table you could hear his brain going “hold on w-wait a minute, no that’s not what i meant”.

CHRISJEN LIVES I was so worried about her with the bonus content showing her health issues and even the one soldier on the ship saying he was worried about her like he embodied me. But she lived fuck yes I am so happy.

rip(?) Marco, at the very least GOODBYE BITCH hope you have fun floating through the cosmos with your disintegrated narcissistic self. It would have been nice to see him suffer but this will do. woah Filip is alive he deserted the ship before the transit and is now going forth as Filip Nagata okay go on get your redemption off by yourself, it is what Naomi wants for him.

Overall I am so satisfied, all of our Rocinante family are alive and thriving on the ship they will go off and live their lives together. The final shot of the Rocinante just flying off into the distance was *chefs kiss*. I will miss this show so much. Quite literally my favourite television show ever. I am so glad they didn’t let me down, as if they could.

I’m looking forward to reading the books and the The Expanse game with Drummer that will release in the future. I’m not done with this world. I’m glad i’ve been able to write these episode posts for this show, it truly deserves. Bye for now Beratna.

He reminds me SO MUCH of my (neurotypical but very logical) husband! So much so that my youngest pointed him out on the screen when I first turned the TV on, screamed ‘DADDY!’ and that’s how I got sucked into this show. He is one of the few ‘nerd’ characters that is also caring, kind, and reflective–just a treat of a character. I refuse to let my daughters watch the finale, but the oldest one got told the ending by a friend (she had no idea what ‘sacrifice’ really meant, until that moment, I found out 😣)

Echo!

Because:

I’m not only a mom to an Omega and a teeny-tiny girl version of Wrecker (PLEASE HELP ME), but I’ve taught a couple of classes on ethics and robotics. Being able to keep your humanity while in incredibly hard, tough situations is no joke, and Echo does it beautifully. Also as a woman in academia, a program director and a writer, I’ve had to deal with my voice being ignored or belittled, and seeing Echo deal with it makes me love him so much. 

Your favorite minor character from the show:

Fennec Shand.

Because:

Loved her in the Mandalorian and Boba Fett, loved that I used a screenshot of her in TBB to convince my buddies that there was an animated version of The Expanse and she was Camina Drummer.

They were not thrilled, but I thought it was funny.

I feel weird putting my longfics aside, but writing up my redneck neighbor Doug and his hot takes on the Bad Batch, especially how he described the main cast.

Crosshair is in a very weird, but very committed, relationship with his rifle, which has a lady’s name like ‘Jessica’ or ‘Cassandra’ or ‘Christina’. It’s his weaponized waifu.

Green, silver, and black. Partially for camo, mostly because Crosshair has raw Philadelphia Eagles fan energy. Win or lose, he’ll happily burn Broad Street to the ground. 

One thing you NEED to see happen in Season 3:

Echo going absolutely APESHIT. Everyone’s going on about Hunter’s Joel Miller era coming up, but after the intro scene of ‘Tipping Point’ and seeing how a turnt up, focused, angry Echo can obliterate a whole damn Imperial vessel in the time it takes me to reheat leftover Chinese in the microwave…well, I need more of that.

okay you got me la’an seems so cool and her whole thing with una is fascinating like every gif i see just pulls me in more im in im going to catch up with star trek strange new worlds this evening! i have pretty much zero knowledge of star trek stuff other than picard which i got into for gay reasons but this looks fun all round(it’s even got good, bright lighting, which doesn’t seem to be a thing these days for any production)like it’s the perfect summer release.

La'an is very cool! It's not a coincidence that from the first ep, a lot of people were calling her Drummer Jr (referring to Camina Drummer from The Expanse). I had to reserve judgment myself, Drummer is such a fave, but five eps in, I can't deny the similarities.

Your only Trek experience being Picard...that is...oh, anon. Literally every single other--well, no matter. This should hopefully be a good watch, and show you the tone of some of the earlier Treks that people like to bring up fondly. Just keep in mind the first ep is a little angsty at the start because it's continuing some of the story set up in Discovery when Pike, Una, and Spock first showed up there.

And yes, it does light things properly, and actually, the coloring is interesting, because you can see how it deliberately tries to reference the original series, from the '60s, but of course it's also simply a modern TV show. I think they've struck a good balance between the two, and yes, so far, these first 5 eps have made for a great watch.
