Moni ei tiennyt, mitä kappaleessa laulettiin. Ei, vaikka siitä tehtiin maailmalla noin 200 versiota ainakin 14 eri kielellä. Suomessa Frederik levytti kappaleen nimellä Kumimies. Vaikutelma on taitava: sanoitukset tuntuvat kahjoilta, samalla tavalla kuin alkuteksti suomalaiseen korvaan. Haloo, faija? Kuka? Ai Haiduk? Sä numeroon mun soitit etkä Maijan, tajuutsä?! Haloo, haloo? Mitä teet, pajatsoni tyhjennät! Pikku-Maijaa et saa Haiduk enää faijaa!

Dragostea din teissä on kuitenkin paljon enemmän tolkkua kuin iso yleisö on luullut. Vastoin yleistä käsitystä kappaleen sanoitus ei ole siansaksaa vaan romaniaa. Se kuuluu romaanisiin kieliin ja on läheistä sukua vaikkapa italialle ja latinalle. Esimerkiksi Frederikin kappaleessaan useaan kertaan mainitsema haiduc määritellään Marilena Aldean, Matti Koskelon ja Lauri Lindgrenin romania–suomi-sanakirjassa lainsuojattomaksi. Haiduc kuullaan alkuperäisen kappaleessa ensisäkeistössä: Alo, salut, sunt eu, un haiduc. Myös Dragostea din tein kertosäkeestä on löydettävissä tukku merkityksiä. Romaniaksi se kuuluu näin:

O-Zonen versiossa vesilammikot vaihtuvat puihin. Kertosäkeen voisi kääntää suomeksi vaikkapa näin: Haluat mennä Muttet ota minua mukaasi Ei, et ota minua Ei, ei, et ota minua Kasvos sun ja rakkaus lehmusten Silmiäs yhä muistelen Lopussa mainittu lehmusten rakkaus eli se kuuluisa dragostea din tei on sittemmin tulkittu seksiksi puiden katveessa. Vanhojen lehtijuttujen mukaan selityksen olisi antanut itse Dan Bălan, yksi O-Zone-yhtyeen kolmesta jäsenestä ja sen lauluntekijä.

Alkuperäistä kommenttia ei kuitenkaan löydy internetistä, joten ei ole varmaa, onko biisinkirjoittaja sanonut näin. ”Annan sinulle kaiken rakkauden näistä puista. Sitä kappaleen nimi tarkoittaa”, Bălan kuvailee vanhassa, yhtyeen ranskalaismedialle antamassa televisiohaastattelussa.

Mutta on kappaleessa käsittämättömyyksiä romaniaksikin. Ma-i-a hi, ma-ia hu, ma-i-a ho, ma-i-a ha-ha ei tarkoita mitään silläkään – tai millään muullakaan – kielellä. Syvemmän merkityksen hakeminen tekstistä voikin olla turhaa. ”Ehkä on ihan hyvä, että ihmiset eivät ymmärtäneet, mitä he lauloivat mukana. En voi sanoa, että sanoitukset olisivat olleet, no, kaikkein syvällisimpiä”, nauroi kolmikon jäsen Arsenie Todiraș romanialaisessa televisiohaastattelussa vuonna 2022.

Honestly, if fascinates me. Check out this history regarding its orthography. Wild! It fascinates me that it's the one Romance language to retain the neuter, and if you look only the spellings of words, it sure seems like you should know how to pronounce it, and then you hear O-Zone pronounce "Dragostea Din Tei" and realize that, nah, they've taken some real liberties over the centuries.

So, yeah, I'd love to learn Romanian some day. It seems fun. :)

Now now, I don't "hate" genres but also there are enough genres I don't listen to - indeed I'm not the "I listen to any kinds of music" type. So for something special from a genre I don't otherwise do, here's Crazy Loop with Famikon! Fyi, it's one of the O-Zone guys, might be some of you heard of that band...
