Now now, I don't "hate" genres but also there are enough genres I don't listen to - indeed I'm not the "I listen to any kinds of music" type. So for something special from a genre I don't otherwise do, here's Crazy Loop with Famikon! Fyi, it's one of the O-Zone guys, might be some of you heard of that band...

For a song to remind me of home... it has to be a nostalgic one right? So here's this old Romanian prog rock band, heavily influenced by Yes and Jethro Tull as they loved themselves to underline, called Sfinx, with their short Epilogue from an album I must have played hundreds of times:

International standards being what they are, the majority of consoles created in or imported to Japan, including those targeting uniquely domestic audiences, employ names or acronyms based on the English language. For the sixty odd years that Japan has been producing electromechanic and electronic game systems there is but a literal handful of systems named in the Japanese language that, I'd wager, even the most seasoned players know little or nothing about. Your curiosity may be rewarded if you continue reading.

1982 - Contrary to what you may have heard or read, Tomy was the first Japanese toy company to develop a computer. Styled after the Texas Instruments TI-99/4 and manufactured by Matsushita, the Pyūta was purposely designed to sit on toy store shelf space as hinted at by its name, a childish diminutive of the word Konpyūtā.

1983 - John Ross's Mini-Arcade project was sold world over under the sweet-sounding name Vectrex. The Japanese distributor, Bandai, was not so enamoured with it. Believing that a Japanese name would do better at retail, it was commercialized as Kōsoku-Sen - The Lightspeed Ship!

1988 - Bandai's history as a console maker is quite unlike any other. Terebikko is a VHS-based gaming system that uses the TV audio output to play sound via its phone receiver and quiz players with multiple response questions. The console produces a sound output that informs the player if the answer was correct or not. Tapes include animated films starring Mario, Anpanman and the characters from Dragon Ball, some even fetching quite the high price at auctions these days.

1990 - Sharp is seldom given due recognition for creating some of Nintendo's finest and durable consoles. The Sūpā Famikon Naizou Terebi SF1 TV perfectly mirrors the concept of their 1983 C1 NES TV, in spite of the technological leap. Its Japanese name describes its built-in console function. Nintendo fanboys would pounce on me were I to snub it.

1995 - Further proof of Bandai's unorthodox approach to console design is found in their unsuccessful Denshi Manga Juku - lit. Electronic Manga Tutor. The first ever stylus-based console - once again, contrary to what many may yet hold to be true - some of the games in its miniscule library allowed the player to design and animate characters or scenes; while others presented a blank canvas for the user to draw the game's protagonist.

1996 - A retail development kit, but a console all the same, Sony's Netto Yarōze was an ambitious project resulting in dozens of homebrewed independent titles. The name matches its vision: a network of creators coming together to realize their individual game design aspirations. Of all the systems in its restricted category, it was by far the most successful.

Unreleased - It's a beautiful fact that the first arcade game and globally successful console had a Japanese word stamped on them - Atari. Mirai, meaning Future, is a prototype found in the mid-1990s, about which nothing can be said authoritatively apart it from being a cartridge-based system. Given the more or less overt resemblances to the Atari XEGS, it is possible that it was designed by Ira Velinsky, in which case it could date from the late 1980s. Though not a made-in-Japan product, its borrowing of a Japanese word makes its presence in this list mandatory.

Translator’s Notes:

 [1] This uses a phrase that basically means “cutting the steering wheel” (ハンドルきる/HANDORU kiru).

 [2] He switches back and forth (as do a few of the other guys) between singular 俺 ore / rough-sounding “I” and rough-sounding plural “we” (using ore with suffixes tachi or ra).  I did my best with the pronouns in a couple places, but it wasn’t obvious if he was saying “we” or “I” in this line.  He said “I” in the Tokyo power-spot line, and then “we” in the certified invincible line next so…

 [3] This seems to be a play on 無免許 mumenkyo, meaning unlicensed (driver).  無敵 muteki means “invincible, unrivaled, undefeatable,” so basically, a license that can’t be taken away or a license to be whatever they want to be without limits.

 [4] The Ninja H2R is a hypersport motorcycle produced by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd.  It’s apparently only intended for closed-course racing and is not street-legal (so you can’t drive it on public roads or highways).  It’s hella fast, with a quoted max speed of 240mph/380kph, and since it doesn’t have to meet sound ordinances for public-street use, it’s also super loud.

 [5] Kawasaki has a yakuza presence and is the home grounds of the Yamakawa-ikka syndicate.  More info here, though the page is only in Japanese.

 [6] The word used is 目覚まし mezamashi meaning “alarm clock” or “keeping oneself awake.”

 [7] The word used is つぶやく tsubuyaku, which could mean either “to tweet (as in on Twitter)” or “to mutter/grumble.”

 [8] Ikegami is a city in the Kawasaki ward.

 [9] Gull-wing car doors hinge at the roof rather than on the sides, so they open upwards.  Some older-model cars (Mercedes Benz from the ‘50’s and ‘70’s) had gull-wing doors; as far as I know the only recent-ish model with them is the Tesla Model X.  This could also refer to the style of door on many Lamborghinis, which open on an angle rather than a real gull-wing (also called scissor doors or Lambo doors.)  [10] This seems to be a variation of the idiom 石橋を叩いて渡る / ishibashi tataite wataru which is literally translated as something like “inspecting the stone bridge [for damage] before crossing.”  The English equivalent is “look before you leap,” meaning, think about what you’re going to do and weigh the consequences before proceeding.  The way he’s phrased it (叩かねぇ石橋 / tataka nee ishibashi) has removed the verb for “crossing” but turned the verb for “inspecting” to a negative as well – so it’s literally something like, “I’m not even checking that bridge,” which in turn means he’s not being cautious or careful, but just doing what he wants without really thinking about it too much.  More info on the idiom here (in Japanese only).

 [11] Jenga is a game of physical skill where players take turns trying to remove and replace wooden bricks from a stack which becomes increasingly unstable as the game progresses.  More on Jenga here.

 [12] 昔カタギ mukashi katagi literally means “old-fashioned spirit, old-fashioned way of thinking,” which is the kind of thing you’d say about someone who is stuck in the past and doesn’t see what’s going on around them.

 [13] He says コルクメット KORUKU METTO, which is literally “cork helmet.”  Specifically, pith helmets are made of cloth-covered Indian cork, so I assume that’s what it’s meant to refer to.  More about pith helmets here.

 [14] This is a little loose.  The actual word is 浮浪者 furousha which means “vagrant, vagabond, tramp.”  

 [15] This is the noun ガキ gaki, which is a kind of derogatory word for kids.  It’s usually “brats, urchins, little devils” and the like, not typically well-behaved children.  The kids in the tough neighborhoods where they grew up want to be successful like them; they’re not necessarily saying the kids themselves are bad, but the area they’re from is not the greatest, so they’re all kind of assumed (by people who don’t know them) to be punks and hoods.

 [16] This isn’t family in the traditional sense – 繋がれる tsunagareru is defined as “to be tied together, to be connected to, to be related to” but not necessarily in a blood-relative kind of way.  This is like, “We understand where you’re from because we’re from there, too.”

 [17] So, 泥水 doromizu can mean either “muddy water” or “red light district.”  I’m going with water, because these lines are saying “We used to be on the bottom, now we’re on top,” or “We went from rags to riches.”

 [18] The only real references to 少年A / Shounen A I found online were in relation to the Kobe child murders (the murderer was given the nickname Shounen A since he was too young to have his name released in the media) – but I think this is just meant to mean, “I went from being from some no-name kid nobody knew to being a superstar.”

 [19] ラジコン / RAJIKON is short for radio-controlled, often abbreviated R/C.  This is usually a toy (typically a car or other vehicle) that you can control with a joystick or buttons to drive it around.  From the “Ninja” reference, and the references to the Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle earlier, I’m guessing he’s talking about a radio-controlled motorcycle toy.

 [20] 任天堂ファミコン Nintendou FAMIKON was the original Nintendo “Family Computer” platform that was remarketed and exported as the Famicom or simply N.E.S. in the US.  It was one of the best-selling game platforms of all time.  More info here.

 [21] Al Capone (also nicknamed “Scarface”) was a notorious American mafia gangster. Al Pacino is an American actor who plays a lot of gangster-type characters in movies (including a few loosely based on Al Capone), but is not, in fact, an actual gangster.  So one is (was) way more dangerous than the other, who is only acting like a gangster.

The writing system of katakana and kanji was created and the Japanese adopted a large number of foreign words. The Japanese language evolved from Chinese characters around the 12th century. There are two forms of the hiragana character: shi and kana. Hiragana is the first Japanese alphabet symbol, followed by kana and kanji. The hiragana character is the same as the kana, but the romaji version is closer to English pronunciation. The meaning of grass in Japanese might be confusing to some, especially for those who don’t speak the language. However, the term is actually just an idiom. As such, grass has become a popular meme in the game. Grass can literally mean a lot of laughter. The word grass comes from the Japanese word “mori,” which means “forest.” While it is not as funny as it sounds, it is still a surprisingly evocative word. However, in Japanese, the word for grass is kusa Cao, which is not the same as the English “lol.” So what does grass mean in Japanese? In Japanese, kusa means “grass” and warau means “laugh.” However, the kanji that means lol in English is actually Xiao. For example, the Japanese version of Fox’s taunt is called Bomb Trooper. Other characters with regional names have different speech and voice effects. The taunt is sung by a female voice and the winning animation uses the sound of a booming boomerang. The game’s signature character, Fox, has an animated taunt that does not feature audio. Unlike its American counterpart, the Japanese version of the game features a wide variety of character voices. The game’s characters are written in Katakana, which is a type of Japanese script. is derived from the Japanese phrase “Game Set.” The word, translated as “match set,” came from the Chinese term “deng huo eigo.” In Japan, the NES and SNES consoles are referred to as Famikon, or Family Computer and Super Family Computer, respectively. Characters with higher % values can deal more damage than their opponents. The objective of the game is to knock opponents off the screen and deal damage.

ファミコンジャンプ 英雄列伝 (Famikon Janpu Hīrō Retsuden)

This is one RPG that I wish had a translation. Think “Project X Zone” only ~23 years earlier and with some of the most well-known characters in Japanese manga history. 

This game was released for the 20th anniversary of the Shonen Jump publication. I was lucky enough to be exposed to these (telephone book sized) manga compilations during my years in junior and senior high as my friend’s grandmother would send them over from Japan. As you can imagine, I mainly flipped through the pages and enjoyed the artwork.

My description of the size of the books is not exaggerated, they were about an inch-and-a-half thick. The current weekly releases contain twenty-one titles, I remember the ones in the early-mid 90s to have about the same.
