i said a week or two ago that i wanted a collection of media with Ur in it and so far i only have Ur from pact and chainsaw man from chainsaw man (who is also a Ur) but i just remembered that i found out earlier that dungeon meshi also has a character who gets got by an Ur in it....much to think about. does the public perchance happen to know of any other Urs* i could collect

*monster, ideally specifically a demon, that removes concepts/people/things from existence entirely by eating them, which has an effect so total that characters do not know the eaten thing ever existed and it may even be obscured to the readers as well

I don't really see "characters" in media as being particularly distinct from any other part of art, such as say a poetic phrase, a musical motif, a particular design, etc. In that regard it's exceptionally easy to remove them from the context of their creator, in a way that an entire cohesive work oftentimes isn't.

I don't think many people think of that antisemitic bastard Wagner when they hear "here comes the bride" at a wedding, and while for some characters (like for example Cthulhu) their intrinsic nature might be perhaps more defined by their creator's psyche, outside the context of the original work they were in (and the creators copyright enforced control) they lose that resemblance very quickly. Something like the anime Nyaruko: Crawling with Love has basically no connection to HP Lovecraft as a person anymore, it's not even in conversation with him as a creator, he might as well not even exist. Musical ideas and fictional characters might seem like a weird equivalence, but consider this : both the oldest musical motifs/ideas and the oldest fictional characters have no known creators to speak of.

With regards to both music and characters, if they manage to persist in the culture for long enough even with a known creator, they all will become for the most part abstracted from them, and depending on their degree of cultural evolution be less and less related to their creator at all. In some cases the reverse may happen, where a creator is instead posthumously defined by their character, even if the character no longer even resembles how the original author envisioned them, I think dracula is an excellent example of this, and Carmilla even more so (who even knows of Stoker and Le Fanu but for being authors of their respective vampires?) I think to some extent this is fated to happen to all characters that remain culturally relevent past their creator's control.

How can people separate art from artist though. Characters ARE their creators to me. Legal status never changes that. Even public domain doesn't change that. Mickey Mouse effectively is Walt Disney in my brain, just forever no matter what and Cthulhu is a piece of H.P Lovecraft's mind even generations after he's been a skeleton in the dirt.

Will I probably watch the new ren and stimpy delightfully now headed by almost everyone their original creator ever wronged? I'm sure that's going to be funny as hell and they were always the real talent but like...he still invented the characters. Something will always feel weird and off like they really could have let it lie and make a different show. Same with whatever they're gonna do with all the roiland stuff. I actually unironically liked solar opposites and even parts of ricko morto but no matter who replaces him or writes for it, he made up those characters, it'll always be weird. Just have everyone else on those shows make new equivalent shows?? Morty's dad was funnier than anyone else in it. Who does that voice again? Give him a whole show with a similar guy getting into weird trouble. Far funnier.
