My brain is so chaotic right now, like it's part shoom bada-bada, shoom bada-bada, shoo-shoo woosh, part half-learned French lyrics it's trying to make sense of, part smiling at the word 'plante' in French duolingo part humming classical music... I might be broken forever

Headcanon #303: Happy Holidays
((This is an idea I’ve had for ages now...and by “ages,” I mean “I wanted to do this during the holiday season last year and I’ve been stuck mulling it over this entire time.” It’s not as detailed as I’d hoped, but it’d be embarrassing if I missed this year, too, so just barely in time for the last day of Hanukkah, here we are!))
Amy makes Christmas cookies for her friends every year, Shadow included. When she stopped by to drop them off one year, she was surprised to find a flurry of activity. Shadow and his Chao, Rosie, were in the process of decorating for both Christmas and Hanukkah. Rosie was in an especially good mood, flying around and practically drenching the house in lights, nutcrackers, and snowman figurines while she hummed a merry rendition of Jingle Bells. She hovered over to drape a wreath around Amy’s neck, clearly intent on decorating literally everything, then nuzzled her and zipped off.
Shadow covered his mantle in a more modest display of blue and white decorations and a collection of dreidels, then approached the door to join Amy. A light jingling noise rang out from his quills as he walked. Amy plucked a tiny sleigh bell from them, only for Rosie to zoom on by and immediately drop another one in to replace it. Shadow shook his head with another jingle, letting her know it wasn’t worth it.
Amy gazed around at the beautiful display, expressing surprise that both holidays were represented. Shadow explained that Gerald and Maria were Jewish, and though his feelings about Gerald were...mixed, it felt right to celebrate all the same. He placed an electric menorah on the mantle. Amy asked if he was using an electric one for safety in case Rosie knocked it over, but Shadow denied it, saying he was more worried about Omega when it came to open flames. Amy couldn’t help but laugh.
Knowing Rouge had already moved out to live with Knuckles on Angel Island, Amy admitted she was surprised to learn Omega was so attached to Christmas.
Shadow just looked confused for a second, but then he shook his head again and told her the decorations were for Rosie, not Omega. When Shadow had gone shopping for his friends, he’d brought Rosie along. Whenever they passed anything related to Christmas, she’d brightened up, visibly thrilled. It wasn’t long before Shadow caught on.
Though he bore no significant interest in the holiday himself, Shadow bought the decorations Rosie was currently gleefully dropping into place, including an entire tree she was deftly hanging ornaments from.
Amy remained silent, eyes wide.
When Rosie flew farther away to nimbly weave a string of green garland around a banister, Shadow leaned in and muttered to Amy, quietly explaining that Rosie had spent time in a lot of houses before he stepped in and adopted her. Although he’d never know for sure, Shadow suspected that she herself had been given as a Christmas gift on more than a few occasions, so she might associate the holiday with excitement and meeting people for the first time. It would have signaled hope and new beginnings for her.
Shadow was determined to prove to Rosie that this time, that hope was there to stay, and so was she.
He’d been gazing up at the stairwell as he spoke, so he was clearly taken off guard when he was met with a tearful Amy. He froze up, but before he had the chance to ask what was wrong, Amy took his hands and started gushing about how sweet it was that he’d go so far for his Chao.
Amy was showering Shadow with compliments, and he was unable to look away, so neither of them noticed Rosie until it was too late. She had enough garland left to circle around them several times, pulling them close together. Both of them yelped in surprise, suddenly finding themselves nose-to-nose, hands still joined. Shadow turned bright red, but Amy tilted her face upward to find Rosie hovering overhead, holding a small green sprig of something above them. Rosie snickered.
Shadow looked upward and choked at what he saw, but Amy just made a confused noise, asking Rosie why she was holding a piece of holly over their heads. Amy climbed out of the tangle and reached up, asking Rosie if she needed help finding a place for it.
Rosie deflated at first, but then she settled for a new game of keepaway, holding it just out of reach while Amy stubbornly hopped around to try and catch it.
Shadow slumped, caught between relief and disappointment.
Amy hugged Shadow and rubbed noses with Rosie, then waved and headed off to deliver the rest of the cookies. Rosie happily munched on one of them, and Shadow crossed his arms and glared disapprovingly, saying she was lucky Amy knew the difference between holly and mistletoe. Rosie giggled and took another bite.

I always thought that me not watching as much anime as I used to, would be the thing that would eventually wean me off figure collecting. But maybe it'll be these US tariffs.
I already have a bunch of preorders I can't take back, and I'll just have to swallow the tariffs that'll be added on, when they release. . At this point, I just have to stop buying figures. No more figures that I don't absolutely thoroughly love with a rabid brainrot intensity. No more non-articulated figures. That means, no more Pop Up Parades, no more prize figures, no more scale figures, and no more trading figures. Honestly, no more non-chibi figures. I got really into figure collecting because of the Nendoroid figure line, and I love chibi. I love cute. There are very few characters that I wouldn't prefer as chibi. For years already, I was already cutting out figures of characters I didn't know, but were pretty figures. But now, no more preordering figures of characters that I only kinda sorta like. After the tariffs, I have to be more serious about cutting down. . Honestly, I didn't fully want to preorder Pop Up Parade Viktor or 1/7 scale Dimitri. I prefer human Viktor. I prefer articulated figures. I prefer chibi. I prefer figures that aren't $200+. I don't need the detail of a scale figure! I have always been okay and in love with mid-range figures. In fact, lots of 1000yen prize figures are very high quality now. I saw them in Japan just last year! I don't need $100+ figures. . …But I got them because supporting releases is how figures I actually fully want, get produced. I want a post timeskip Claude. I want human Viktor and a Jayce to go with him. And yeah, that strategy worked a lot back in the day. That's how we got figure lines like Orange Rouge. It's how even the least popular Persona 5 character Ryuji got both a Nendoroid and a Figma. Back in the day, Good Smile wouldn't bother making figures of characters as masculine as Ryuji. I shelled out so much for Touken Ranbu characters I didn't know, just in the hopes of encouraging GSC to make Nendoroids of the Dategumi characters that I did want. And yeah, it worked. …But I can't afford that anymore. . I had to skip out on the casual versions of all 3 Spy x Family Forger Nendoroids. I had to skip out on Pop Up Parade Arsene ($90) and Pop Up Parade Homulily/Nutcracker Witch. I skipped all the Symphony version Vocaloids, until Luka. I skipped so many Snow Miku and didn't even try for so many Racing Miku. I skipped on all those cute Qset and Hello Good Smile figures, even though I wanted so many. I skipped garden party version Maomao and Nendoroid Garfield. I skipped Nendoroid Melinoe preorders in the hopes she'll be half off during a future sale after her release. I skipped school uniform Lum and all the Dungeon Meshi Nendoroids besides Senshi. I skipped Nendo Rinne Rokudo, even though I love Rumiko Takahashi. I repeatedly skip Jojo and Fruits Basket Nendoroids, even tho they're often in sales. I gave up on Yuru Camp Nendoroids and pretty idol series Nendoroids. I skipped the Nendo Doll Red Riding Hood, even though I told GSC how much I wanted her rerelease. I skipped out on the Figma Human Anatomical Model even when it was on sale for only $38! I have to skip out on figures, even when they're on sale now. And now I'm skipping on Pop Up Parade Hilda. ;_; . Lists of all the figures I've wanted and skipped, are usually a source of pride for me. Proof that I was finally able to restrain my spending. But I really hate that I have to do this now, more strictly even, because of these unnecessary US tariffs. UGH. . This may be the thing that actually gets me out of figure collecting. ;_;

I just finished a book called The Queens of Animation by Nathalia Holt, about women animators at the Walt Disney Studio. I cannot believe the shit I found out.
(Hopefully I got this all correct, I was listening to an audiobook instead of reading a hard copy, so I can't consult it for name spellings and the like. I'm relying on Google, and well, we know how that goes sometimes.)
Some things I learned from this book. -Walt Disney became a personal champion of women in the animation department, arguing not just that they were as talented as men but that they could bring something to storytelling that men could not. After his death, the number of women in the animation and story departments plummeted, along with the animation department itself. -But he also paid women way less. (Except Mary Blair.)
Not just women, but many animators had a hard time getting on-screen credit for their work. This was one of the issues that led to a massive strike in 1941 that tore the department in two, temporarily shut down the studio, and resulted in a lot of people, both union and non-union, losing their jobs when it finally reopened.
On the rare occasion women did get credit, they were sometimes ignored by reviewers.
The second woman to be hired to the animation department, Grace Huntington, was a pilot who held multiple speed and altitude records. She eventually quit the studio with the hopes of getting a full time aviation job, but died young of TB before her career could take off.
Traditional animation is apparently a terrible way to make money. Only a handful of the early animated feature-length films made more at the box office than it took to make them.
Women animators were drawing things for The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast as early as the 1930s.
Men thought drawing fairies was unmanly, so the fairy sequence set to Nutcracker music in Fantasia was drawn and directed entirely by women.
While the women animators were doing that, the men drew super gross racist and sexist centaurs to Beethoven music, and the reviewers all hated it. (Essentially they were like HOW COULD YOU DO THAT TO BEETHOVEN.) - Generally, male animators tended to like slapstick comedy in their cartoons, while women tended to be more about storytelling and character development.
Obviously there were exceptions to that rule, like Walt Disney and Mark Davis.
Disney hired an LSU professor to write Song of the South. When everyone pointed out to him this was a terrible idea, he hired a Communist Jew from New York as co-writer for "balance."
This went about as well as you'd expect.
When the LSU professor demanded his co-writer get taken off the script, Disney replaced him with another "progressive" white guy.
Apparently he never considered hiring an African-American writer.
Literally everyone, including the studio's legal team, told him not to make this movie, much less hire a white guy from Baton Rouge to write it.
The lead actor James Baskett, who won an Honorary Academy Award for the role, couldn't go to the premiere because it was held in Atlanta.
Meanwhile, the Communist got put on Cinderella. He interpreted the story as a worker rising up against her oppressors.
This is also known as the correct way to interpret Cinderella.
Apparently the writer (so sorry, I'm forgetting his name) included a "violent" scene in which Cinderella goes after her stepmother and stepsisters.
I have no more details than that, but apparently the other animators made him take it out.
I'm now just picturing Cinderella stalking around her house with a raised butcher knife in her hand like in "Psycho."
Artist Mary Blair was art director for many of the classic Disney movies, including Cinderella and Alice in Wonderland. Disney loved her work so much that when she had to move to Long Island for her husband's job, Disney let her work remotely and fly back and forth from New York to Los Angeles.
She was responsible for the rich colors and design choices in the princess movies. She resigned part way through "Sleeping Beauty" but the art director after her used her designs for Maleficent.
Her husband, Lee Blair, was also an animator for the studio before he left to fight in World War II. He was apparently extremely jealous of Mary's artistic talent, and when he returned from Europe, he moved the family to Long Island, became an alcoholic, and started abusing her and later their children. Mary didn't feel she could go to Walt, or any of her other friends at the studio like Retta Scott and Mark and Alice Davis, because domestic violence and divorce were so taboo back then.
Even after the move, Disney let her work remotely, and she spent a lot of time flying between New York and Los Angeles. She eventually resigned hoping to work on her marriage (this didn't really work, though her husband did eventually start going to AA meetings after spending a year in jail for drunk driving) but was later rehired to help design the It's A Small World ride.
Everyone who worked on that ride hated the song btw.
The men apparently got over the idea of drawing fairies making their balls fall off or something by the time they were making Peter Pan, but one of them still asked why Tinker Bell "had to be so naughty".
101 Dalmations was the first animated film to be made using Xerox technology, which decimated the studio's female-dominated ink and paint department (their job was to trace over the animators' work). The Xerox machines could only make black and white at first, which is why so much of that movie is so colorless compared to the earlier Disney films Mary Blair worked on.
The silver lining was everyone got to play with puppies while they were making it because Disney ordered a whole bunch of them to just be there in the studio for the animators to draw.
Speaking of cute animals, the Burbank lot was home to a bunch of stray cats. Disney liked them being there because they hunted mice, so he didn't like when employees fed them.
Disney hated 101 Dalmations, because of the Xerox machines, but it made more of a profit than any of his previous films, because of the Xerox machines.
Julie Andrews originally turned down the role of Mary Poppins because she was pregnant, and Disney promised to wait on her. (Joss Whedon, take notes.)
After Walt died of lung cancer, the animation department was nearly killed and pretty much stopped hiring women. Mary Blair, who had been almost as influential to Disney's art as Walt, was edged out and by the time new animators started working on the Disney Renaissance films, they didn't even know who she was.
Many of the women who left the studio went on to work for Little Golden Books and other children's book publishing companies.
One of the few women animators at the company at this time, Heidi Guedel, who drew Tigger, left with Don Bluth when he departed to form his own company in 1979.
When The Little Mermaid was in production, there was only one woman animator--she may have been the only woman in the entire story department, I don't remember.
Disney then began hiring more women animators at the directive of then-Disney CEO Mike Eisner and head of animation Jeffrey Katzenberg.
One of the women screenwriters working on Beauty and the Beast (I think Linda Woolverton, but it may have been Brenda Chapman) wrote a scene in which Belle puts pins on a map showing where all she hopes to travel.
The animators changed the scene in the storyboards so that Belle is in the kitchen making a cake instead. When the screenwriter saw it, she apparently raged BELLE DOES NOT MAKE CAKES!
Pixar at this time had no women in its animation department.
Brenda Chapman became the first woman to win an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film for Brave. During her acceptance speech, she talked about her daughter Emma.
When making Frozen, Disney held a "sister summit" of women discussing their relationships with their sisters and other women. Men at the summit were not allowed to speak.
btw Brenda Chapman also worked on The Prince of Egypt. (I did not learn this from the book, I learned it just now while looking her up on imdb.)
If I have had a very bad day, and am very tired, then the mere mention of Howard Ashman's name will make me break down in tears.

Note
10 facts Kirsty? 🥺
1 – Kirsty's main comfort items are a stuffed whale from Mia and a blanket knit by Sookie. She's had both since she was a baby, and Sookie knit the blanket big enough that even now it fully covers her
2 – Whenever Kirsty is really stressed or overwhelmed, she goes into a deep cleaning overdrive until she physically can't anymore and just ends up laying on the floor wherever she was last working
3 – Kirsty became fascinated with photography when Rachel was around when she was a kid, got her first camera from Rachel and still has it, whenever she isn't participating in town events for Patty, she's taking pictures
4 – Kirsty has a key to Miss Patty's (she's the only other person who does) and when she's having a difficult time with her brain she'll go at night and either goes on one of her cleaning sprees until she falls asleep on the mats or she just puts on her music and dances until she's too exhausted to keep going
5 – Kirsty has a car (at least until Teach Me Tonight) which was a gift that Emily insisted on getting for her sixteenth birthday, but Kirsty is terrified of cars and never gets her license
6 – Emily is significantly more involved in Kirsty's life. When Kirsty was 8 she took the bus to Hartford by herself and made a deal that Emily would pay for all of her activity fees (mainly dance/skating/gymnastics but also travel fees to competitions) in exchange for Kirsty having lunch with her every Sunday. Over the years this grew to include Kirsty's involvement with the DAR (she actually enjoys planning events for them) and a lot of Emily's other organizations/committees, as well as Emily accompanying her to New York every December for Kirsty to be in the New York Ballet's Nutcracker. While Kirsty loves Emily and Emily tries to love Kirsty, Kirsty is also very much her attempt at a do-over daughter and can be controlling to the point of abusive, Kirsty has yet to unpack how traumatized she actually is from some of it
6B – Emily being hyper-controlling and hypercritical has also led to Kirsty developing an eating disorder as a child and was a main factor in her severe addiction spiral
7 – Kirsty's natural hair colour is very auburn, but after getting home from her New York trip with Emily in her freshman year of high school she had Chandler (her best friend) dye it dark brown, and that night was also when she got drunk at a party for the first time
8 – Kirsty suffers from a lot of chronic pain from dance (especially hips, knees, and ankles) and is almost always using at least one hot water bottle when she's at home. For her sixteeth birthday, Sookie knit her a whole collection of cute covers for them
9 – Kirsty also struggles with chronic fatigue. On her bad days she can be found carrying her blanket from Sookie around everywhere until she finally feels comfortable to just curl up somewhere and rest
10 – some of Kirsty's main ballet's have been Nutcracker (she's been a party girl, Clara, a snowflake, the Snow Queen, and the Sugarplum Fairy), Romeo and Juliet, Don Quixote, Coppelia, the Secret Garden, Swan Lake (as Odette/Odile), Alice in Wonderland, and she's done a Phantom Of The Opera as Meg when she was pretty young but then again when she was older as Christine. She's also been a New York City Rockette for years and was a dancer at the Moulin Rouge in Paris
10B – she's also been on Broadway, and some of her main roles have been Victoria Cats, Natalie in Next To Normal (OBC), Jenna in Waitress (OBC + wins a Tony), Sophie in Mamma Mia (thinking National Tour not Broadway), Satine in Moulin Rouge (OBC + wins a Tony), Velma Kelly in Chicago, and Anastasia in Anastasia
