I need people to understand that, when people like me -- marginalised but from a place very different to the American South -- express fear over visiting or working in or even passing through the American South, we are in absolutely no way talking about the people who are kind and safe and welcoming. We are not talking about the people who are working to make the South safer for people like me. We are not talking about the queer culture or whether it's vibrant or not. We are not talking about the general culture or whether it's better or worse than where we're from.

The world is and always will be a dangerous place (to variable degress) for marginalised people anywhere. So what we're talking about is the fact that we don't have the survival skills for an environment that is dangerous in such a different way to what we know how to survive.

Some examples

I can recognise when someone is unsafe where I live but I have absolutely no idea how to identify if someone's carrying a handgun... because I've never seen someone carrying a handgun (aside from police in medical settings).

I know how to identify whether a neighbourhood is safe where I'm from but even moving within Canada, I had to recalibrate that judgement so in a place so different to where I am from, I would be totally at a loss.

I know my federally mandated rights in the workplace when it comes to discrimination and have a general idea of the specifics in most provinces and territories, plus I have some idea of the unwritten rules of what can hurt my career (at least in my industry). I could very easily trip up devastatingly somewhere else.

I know what healthcare I have access to here and by what means and I know the culture in healthcare well enough to get my needs met. American healthcare culture (not even accounting for the funding model, although it plays a huge role) is very very different and I would not get my needs met in an emergency (frequent occurrence for me)

Could I adjust? Probably! But it would take a lot of time and, currently, I would not have the capacity to handle the stress. Just an explanation and some reassurance that, when I express fear over the American South, it is absolutely not against the people or the culture. It's not against the American South in any capacity. It's just a statement on how different the culture is.

And yes, this post is about the American South but you could replace every instance of 'the American South' in this post with any other region with a marked difference in culture and set of risks. Why'd I pick on the American South? Because my field of study is astronomy and I might personally have to work there in the (possibly near-) future. Of the places I've been hoping to work, that is the one that scares me the most because it's got the most contrasting set of risks.

Stop Gaza Genocide is a google doc that is constantly updated, which includes how to contact representatives, how to protest, and various activist resources (US centric)

UNRWA and Care for Gaza are orgs that directly provide general aid and food

Lastly, while not inherently about Palestine, I do want to encourage everyone reading this that If you see a post regarding Palestine- a video, a photo, a livestream, a text post- Archive it with the Wayback Machine. When digital information is prone to deletion and censorship, we cannot afford to lose something as valuable as knowledge.
