For @elainweekofficial Day 4: Seen & Unseen — Elain with Jesminda

Here’s Elain basking in the sun with my version of Jesminda from my fanfic A Court of Embers and Sunlight. I have to insert Jes into everything but UGH I can’t help it I love her so much. One of my favorite things to see in Elucien fics or Gen Elain fics is when Elain gets visions of Jesminda from the past, or she sees and speaks with her spirit. So I felt inspired to draw that for this prompt.

And now a ramble about me gushing over these two girls:

I have so many headcanons for Jes that she’s basically become my OC, and I did accidentally incorporate Elucien because I think that symbolism is important for Elucien’s journey. Lucien thought that Elain is “nothing like Jesminda” when he officially met her, and I think their new mating bond brought back a lot of complicated feelings like guilt. But I do have headcanons that she is similar to my version of Jes: they are both connected to nature and sunlight. They love to garden but can feel confined because of the pressures and assumptions that are put on them, though Jesminda as a lesser fae has had less opportunities in that regard. They’re both filled with hope and joy and Lucien brings that out for both of them. They both would love to travel and see the world. Jesminda is very lively, social, and wild, and Elain might not be the same as she was when she was younger, but she does love balls and parties so I can see Elain growing back into that social life and Lucien seeing glimpses of Jesminda… Also the name Jesminder can mean many things including Jasmine, God’s Gift, and Queen of Flowers. And all of these scream Elain too and I think that’s such an interesting connection. I think their opposing symbolism is so perfect too: Spring and Autumn, Life and Death, Ends and Beginnings.

Blog lore:

This blog takes place loosely post canon. I try to avoid spoilers, but little things here and there are inevitable. Chilchuck has made up with his wife and they’re currently working on their relationship. Chilchuck is also in therapy. This is for a few reasons.

1) I don’t think he’d actually answer any of these if he wasn’t.

2) He doesn’t talk about it a lot, but it was one of his wife’s conditions before giving the relationship another go.

3) He just. Should be in general and I have control of it so it’s happening lol

My Chil is bi, but in the middle-aged “everyone’s had gay thoughts before” kinda way, cause I think it’s funnier that way. He also gets high from time-to-time now that he’s not dungeneering anymore.

Folks kept turning him into different things/animals, so goldstar/⭐️ anon gave him an amulet to put a stop to that. "Marcus" also altered the spell on the amulet to encompass all transformations, since inanimate objects weren't initially included.

Squeaker also used a device to prevent any crab transformations specifically from occurring, as well as ejecting all crabs within a 20 mile radius.

There’s also a cult stalking him for some reason. (This is an ongoing problem. They haven't hurt anyone, and they seem to only be targeting Chilchuck.)

The TVA (Marvel) is loosely involved as well as previously mentioned. Squeak fixed it (or so she thought. There's now a DMCU situation going on.)

Also, Chil’s knowledge of the blog/Tumblr varies depending on what would be funnier, but generally he’s aware of the internet. He only uses his phone to answer your asks, though. He has no idea how to do anything else and has no desire to. This means he doesn’t fact check people or knows anything about the greater internet experience. No one knows how he got the phone, or how it’s holding a charge. Don’t worry about it.

Chilchuck has recently started googling slang, and anything else that might be confusing or annoying to him. However, he hates the search feature and trying to find answers on individual websites, and will take the AI generated answers without question.

I am officially posting my rec list, because I was nicely asked for a few fic recs and I immediately made a fully formatted and meticulously vetted list of fics, complete with synopsises and word counts.

The thought process there was "Oh, I got a ton of fics. But wait I can't just give them a bunch of loose links, I need to title them! What if MLP G6 brought back The Rainbow of Light locket thing that Megan had in G1 and the device Sunny used in G5 as a source of power for Earth ponies, Unicorns, and Pegasi to thwart off bad guys similar to how The Elements of Harmony work by saving the day with rainbow lasers?

2. What if MLP G6 brought back characters from G2 because G2 ponies need love too! They keep getting mistaken for the ponies in My Little Pony Tales from 1992 (which is actually just G1.5) or they're just forgotten COMPLETELY! They need more recognition!

3. What if MLP G6 had Spike the Dragon return but this time it's actually a genderbent version? It wouldn't be the first time a franchise would genderbent a supporting character, but it would make for an interesting outcome.

4. What if MLP G6 brought back G4 creatures from the IDW Comics and develop on their culture such as King Aspen, Prince Bramble, and the rest of the deer who live in a kingdom deep within The Everfree Forest? What about the Umbrum ponies (shadow ponies) who were an ancient race of wraith-like beings who used to terrorize The Crystal Empire? What about including Bat Ponies seeing as how they didn't get much material to work with?

5. What if MLP G6 treated alicorns as legends? The ponies would have so many stories, theories, and speculations about them yet they've never seen a single one! What if alicorns were able to dreamwalk like Princess Luna and ponies were able to see them that way but wouldn't believe it was real? What if alicorns regularly rushed to a pony's aid in their time of need for only a moment until they disappear into obscurity?

6. What if MLP G6 focused on an ordinary pony who didn't have any magic far from any pony lands but lived an ordinary life as a real-life horse at a petting zoo or the stables who would then make friends with either an Earth pony, Unicorn, or Pegasus who'd tell many stories of the magical pony lands inspiring our main character to join their new friend leaving the ordinary stable life behind while finding a new purpose in life? (This idea was mainly inspired by @bubamarra after learning of their ideas on G6 and this wonderful art piece is theirs as well).

7. What if MLP G6 had a TV special where ponies discuss what they believe the true magic in ponykind is while going over every previous generation seeing how they each use their own magic to stay together as one as they defeat many threats/obstacles along the way? What if they discussed the different magical devices that were used in previous gens like The Rainbow of Light (G1), Princess Rarity's Crystal Rainbow Wand (G3), or The Elements of Harmony (G4)? What if they talked about different characters from previous gens mentioning what they like or don't like about them? What if G6 ponies feel insecure that their magic might not measure up to previous gens?

8. What if MLP G6 had a one-hour special or the length of a TV movie where the ponies have to save their friends from getting kidnapped by humans who witnessed their magic and plan to use them for profit so they coincidentally bump into Megan from G1 and team up to rescue their friends? Maybe Megan's younger siblings (Danny and Molly) can join in to help too? I feel like kids would gladly take the opportunity to help magical talking animals on such an adventure!

Saw your tags, shaking your hand so so so hard. As always your taste is immaculate and your brain is huge.

My inability to be normal about the Froakie line (going strong since I was 13 and and only observing the pokémon franchise from the sidelines*) aside, I'm so obsessed with the bond phenomenon as a gimmick because it gives you so many opportunities for tinkering with character design - who the hell wouldn't want to be matchy matchy with their pokémon buddy? Plus there's an angle which I like to explore in my silly little daydreams: how deep does it go? Is it like drifting in Pacific Rim? Can you get telepathy out of it? A bleed-over effect of habits, memories, mannerisms? I have a whole goddamn pokémon journey novelisation of my Y run in my head with the battle bond included because it's just such a fascinating gimmick to tinker with.

(*I watched some of the original anime as a kid, had a brief dalliance with gen 4 games and anime and pokémon ranger, before being grabbed by the fucking throat by a cute little blue bubble froggy in 2013 and gradually dragged into the franchise proper. I only got a 3ds last year (2013-18 were a bit of a wild time for me and 18-22 were uni hell) but I swear to god the moment I opened pokémon Y and found my Froakie buddy looking at me I was fucking done for. So yeah, the Froakie line is, in fact, responsible for me getting into pokémon properly. Late, maybe, but better late than never!)

Given the fact that mechanic-wise it's a third ability, it could be argued to be genetic on the frog's side, but more of a potential/compatibility thing on the human side. If it's genetic, is it a result of higher empathy? Of a slightly less stable genetic makeup or a glitch of the evolution mechanism? How common is it? For all we know it could be more common but dormant, lacking a suitable trainer. According to that one drawing from the anime (ninja village, lore drop about the bond phenomenon) bonded Gren just looks like that (in addition to the Ash-Gren sprite in Sun/Moon retaining these features even away from Ash), so from a Watsonian perspective it seems that anime Gren just happened to meet a kid whose aesthetic matches his bonded form. That said, why not tweak it a bit? Why not see if the phenomenon also manifests in other pokémon? I'm still baffled that there's so little art of bonded trainer and 'mon duo because of all the character customisation you can do. One would think it's a fun idea to make drawing challenges etc of, like designing megas for random pokémon.

Also Gren should've beaten Alain's Charizard but they were saving up Ash's league win for his pen/ultimate seasons and this is a hill I'm ready to kill on. My Gren absolutely demolished Olympia's gym while 10 levels underleveled with just a night slash (not my fault then gen 6 gym leaders are pushovers) so a bonded, sufficiently trained Gren with a (game mechanic) affection boost and buff to water shuriken, a super effective STAB move it has high stats for, should've Deus Ex(yz) Machina'd the lizard into the ground.

I got X for Christmas when I was like 8 and it was my very first Pokémon game, I knew next to nothing about the game’s mechanics (and embarrassingly didn’t realize that the blue symbol next to my fennekin’s name meant that he was male and not that he was weak to water LMFAO)

I already knew about Ash Greninja when I started watching XYZ in my first year of middle school, so I was SO INCREDIBLY EXCITED when he appeared for the first time in episode 7

Pokémon XYZ and Ash Greninja then proceeded to take over my life for the next three years

The lore was great the animation was pure action eye candy and I thought it was all so fucking cool

The first fanfiction I ever wrote was a fic where Greninja returns in Pokémon sun and moon, it’s still out there on the internet somewhere and the writing sure is. Something.

I also revisited X and did a replay of the game with froakie as my starter - I loved him so much

Also YESSS I love thinking about further implications of the bond phenomenon, I was and still kind of am so fascinated by it - I’m a sucker for this sort of power up that’s reliant on two separate characters and their dynamic with each other because of the potential for fun character development and also cool power ups

I love the idea of Ash and Greninja being slightly linked at all times, like occasionally one will feel a slight pulse of emotion from the other or they’ll briefly glimpse what the other is seeing, I’ve seen some fics where they can activate the Bond Phenomenon at any time and anywhere, which oftentimes led to Ash confusing/scaring the shit out of his friends, I saw a tumblr post somewhere about how Ash and Greninja’s mannerisms might leak into each other when the Phenomenon is active, there’s just so much potential in this concept and is it any wonder I was obsessed with it as a kid

fucksake, they just hit sixth grade. We are registering the warning signs right now; the lack of respect or empathy, the inability to read , the need for instant gratification OR ELSE, and don't get me started on this Sephora bullshit. Yeah, it's looking pretty bad.

The fact is though, we are their skibidi gyatdamn parents! This is our wakeup call to do better. So here's a list of a few things that might improve the situation.

If you've got a younger child, please do not get them on an i-pad until they are at least 4. Even as an educational tool, they are no replacement for the hands-on and interpersonal learning that their developing brain needs. Talk to them, give them blocks and balls and plenty of things that they can safely place in their mouths. These things help them build a deeper understanding of the world that later social skills and academic stuff can anchor to. At pre-school a little supervised and directed exposure to educational programs can be a good supplement, but do not leave them to use screens feely. As they get into middle school, you should still be aware. There are a lot of dangers on there that tweens don't have the experience yet to recognize and it's a lot wierder than you think.

2. On that note, If you must put them in front of the TV (no shame, it has to happen from time to time in this late-stage capitalist hellscape) for the love of fuck, please pay attention to what they are watching! I cannot begin to tell you, as a teacher, what a difference this can make. Don't trust that everything on Nick jr or Disney is your friend no matter how colorful or silly it looks. Watch a couple episodes either on your own or with them to determine if it has substance or if its values are ones you are ready to expose your children to (I was shocked when I sat down to watch the original Thomas the Tank Engine).

I'll do another post on shows I recommend sometime but as a teacher, PLEASE let most of their TV time be PBS Kids. I shit you not, I can tell the difference between the kids that primarily watched Paw Patrol and the kids that watched Dinosaur Train.

For younger kids, violence is a no, for sure; their brains are still developing and no matter how smart they are, a toddler is not prepared to process whatever nuance you as an adult may have the context for. You don't want to normalize it.

The same goes for adult humor. I have had to send too many kids to the office because of a racial slur or sexist comment that they pulled straight from Southpark or Family Guy. That shit should not be happening!

3. From obscure, seemingly cutesie philosophies that turn out to be cults, to the fucking manosphere and any number of hate-groups that have perfected the art of planting-the-seed with kids, you need to keep them off social media, including Tik-tok and Youtube. There are parenting aps that can block these and limit screen time, but even they cannot be used as a "set it and forget it" solution.

4. Failing all of this, the most important thing you can do for your kids may be to actually converse with them. Sit and watch some shows with them, listen to their interests, let them talk your ear off about their favorite game. Normalize them sharing with you and do this as early as possible. The benefits are numerouse

A. It opens up the lines of communication. You can identify trouble a lot faster and support their goals a lot easier when you have this going for you.

B. It establishes early that you are a safe person to share things with. This is invaluable as they get older, and for keeping them safe at any age.

C. It gives them a chance to utilize RECALL PRACTICE. this is an often overlooked brain booster, but recalling information so they can share it with you, actively helps gear their developing brain for future learning by making it easier for them to call on and access information at will.

D. It builds confidence When you take time to listen to them, you are showing them that their input is valuable; that the things that interest them are worth sharing. There may be times when it is not appropriate, and you can guide them on that, but giving them the respect of listening when you can will help them recognize their worth when future "friends", colleagues, and partners consistently dismiss them or shame them for it.

E. It builds socio/emotional intelligence and models respectful dialogue.

5. Read to them and with them. Even if you aren't a reader, listen to audio-books. Give them a chance to practice their reading skills and comprehension. Normalize the idea that reading is enjoyable.

5. Finally, understand this: you are not being an authoritarian when you set rules and enforce them. They are going to test boundaries, not because they are bad, not because they crave a lack of restriction, but because they need to know that they are there in order to feel secure. There are as many new fads for parenting as there are diets, but whatever parenting style you choose, be firm and consistent with your core rules and principles. your kids, and the people who have to interact with them, will be better off for it.

And cut yourself a bit of slack too. Parenting is tricky, and there are new challenges we are having to learn quickly as we go. It doesn't help that our generation caught so much shit, but we cannot simultaneously be parents AND continue to be victims. Seek out support, and give it whenever you can. We have to recognize our worth and our importance to this generation and take a stand now for their well being.

You are their parent and you play a very needed, active role in their lives.

Genesis 38 - Tamar : It is a sin to deny people fair treatment & they are justified to find ways to get what they deserve

The story of Tamar interrupts the story of Joseph and his coat of many colors, which means it is often skipped over, in part to follow the story of Joseph and also because it is an uncomfortable story.

Judah has 3 sons. He arranges for his oldest son to marry a Canaanite woman named Tamar. His oldest son dies without Tamar having children.

As per their tradition of levirate marriages, the brother of a man who dies without children is permitted and encouraged to marry the widow and any children that comes from that marriage are considered to belong to the deceased brother. Judah assigns Tamar to be wife of his second son who is named Onan.

Onan has sex with Tamar but pulls out and spills his semen on the ground rather than possibly impregnate her. Why would he do this? Under their tradition of primogeniture, Judah’s wealth would be divided among his 3 sons, but with the oldest getting double what the others receive. This meant the oldest would inherit 1/2 of all Judah has, the two younger brothers would each get 1/4. With the oldest son dead, if Tamar has a son, he would inherit his father’s share. However, if Tamar doesn’t have a son, then Onan would move into the spot of the oldest son and inherit 2/3 of Judah’s wealth. 

Onan dies and Tamar still doesn’t have a child, so tradition would be for her to go to the final brother. Judah is worried that if Tamar marries his final son, then he will also die, perhaps Judah sees Tamar as the common denominator in the deaths of his two oldest sons. Judah tells Tamar to go back to her father's home and live as a widow.

Judah’s wife dies. The scriptures say he was comforted, I think this is meaning he did the requisite mourning period.

Tamar finds out it is time for Judah to shear his sheep, and she puts her plan into motion. The local fertility cult had women who had sex with worshipers as a way to ensure the land's fertility, and Tamar dressed like one of these women, which included wearing a veil to hide her face, then she waits along the road that leads to where Judah’s sheep are located. Judah, who hasn’t had sex since his wife died, sees Tamar and wants to have sex with her and in exchange offers to give her a young goat. He doesn’t have the young goat with him, so to assure that Judah will send the goat, Tamar asks that he leave his staff, seal, and cord.

Judah later sends one of his workers with the young goat, except he can’t find the woman in this consecrated role, and the villagers say there hasn’t been such a woman at the local shrine for some time. 

In 3 months, reports come to Judah that Tamar is pregnant from prostituting herself out for money. He is outraged and orders for her to be burned to death.

Tamar produces the staff, seal, and cord, and announces these belong to the man who impregnated her and asks if Judah recognizes who these belong to. Judah admits to what he did, and takes care of Tamar and the twins she is pregnant with, although he never sleeps with her again, so it sounds like he does not marry her.

This is a weird story. I have some observations.

Judah is pretty much a failure as patriarch of the tribe of Judah and this is really the story of how Tamar rescued this tribe and became the matriarch of the people of Judah. 

All the men in this family, by treating Tamar this way, risked the continuation of this family's line by putting in jeopardy the creation of the next generation.

In their society, the value of a woman is her virginity and her ability to bear children, and she will be provided for by either her father or her husband.

Judah’s family has left her valueless. Tamar is no longer a maiden. Onan denied her the opportunity for children. After Onan's death, Judah denies her the opportunity to marry his youngest. They've put her in a precarious position.

In Genesis 37, the chapter preceding this story, Judah is the one who came up with the idea of selling Joseph into slavery and telling their father that Joseph is dead, causing their father immense grief. It feels a bit like karma that in this story Judah loses two of his sons and he experiences the same grief at losing them as his father.

Some Christians have used the story of Onan to argue that masturbation is sinful because it also results in spilling the man's seed on the ground, not in the vaginal canal. In other words, it's sex which can't result in pregnancy.

The scripture seems clear that the sin of Onan isn’t that his semen hit the ground, but that Onan refused to impregnate Tamar, which was his duty to his dead brother. Onan broke the contract to raise up children to his deceased brother. Onan used Tamar for his sexual pleasure and/or as a way to disgrace his dead brother. Blocking Tamar from having children would result in Onan receiving his brother’s inheritance for himself, essentially robbing Tamar.

It is strange to use this story to teach masturbation is a sin as there was no masturbation mentioned in the story. Masturbate to your heart’s content as long as it isn’t hurting anyone.

When Tamar heard that Judah was going to shear his sheep, that seemed to convey important information, like shearing sheep isn't the only thing that happens at this time.

It makes me think of cowboys on the cattle drives who would receive their lump sum payment at the end of the trail when the cattle are sold, and many of them would immediately go looking to spend it on booze and women. Perhaps it is similar in that having all this wool to sell is an economic windfall and vices can be afforded.

It is interesting there is no condemnation of Judah for soliciting the prostitute. However, when he learned that Tamar had prostituted herself, he is furious and demands that she be burned to death. It shows the double standard of patriarchy. It was fine for Judah to use a woman for sex, but unthinkable for a woman in his family to be engaged in that activity. What is acceptable depends on which side of the patriarchal system you find yourself. Women at that time were viewed as property, and being a harlot, even a religious one, dramatically reduces the value of the woman.

It wasn't happenstance that Tamar required Judah to hand over his seal, staff, and cord. These are the symbol of his family and his tribe. The seal is used to mark his property. These items are highly valuable, and by handing them over, he is putting the future of his family in the hands of the sacred prostitute. It is reminiscent of Esau selling his birthright to satisfy his hunger. Judah was satisfying a different hunger.

Judah admits to what he did and agrees to take care of Tamar. He recognized the wrong he did and took steps to fix it, so in a way he redeems himself in some measure. This is considered justice and a fulfilling of what is owed to Tamar.

The sin of this story was not prostitution, it wasn’t sex outside of marriage, it wasn’t masturbation or birth control. They failed to take care of Tamar and meet their obligations to her, that is the sin. They had an obligation to care for someone in a vulnerable position.

This family has many generations of women who are infertile, but who finally have a son who grows up to save the nation. Think of Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel, Elizabeth, and Hannah. Although, since the common denominator is the males from the same family line, perhaps it's not the women who are infertile.

While not infertile, Tamar is similar in that she is unable to have children due to the men of this family. Tamar uses trickery and extra-marital sex to seize the means of reproduction, and she was declared righteous for doing so.

This Canaanite woman lived up to all the traditional roles expected of her, but she was betrayed by the patriarchy. Perhaps they did this because she wasn't an Israelite, but rather than polluting the tribe, she lifts it up. She became the one to carry on Judah’s lineage through her children.

A queer application of this is we need to take care of the people around us, especially those more vulnerable and on the margins of society.

Many laws are being passed to deny basic rights and decency to queer people, especially trans individuals. Do we stand up for these vulnerable groups of people and oppose this legislation?

It’s okay for non-queer people to get gender-affirming care. For example, hormone blockers if puberty comes too early or to treat the symptoms of PCOS, testosterone to boost sex drive, hormone replacement therapy for menopause, breast reduction or enhancement surgery, hair transplants, Viagra, injections of filler to plump up lips and bums, and the list goes on and on. Cisgender people affirming their gender through healthcare is commonplace.

But for queer people to seek gender-affirming healthcare, that's not seen as the same. Laws target trans people to forbid them accessing gender-affirming care.

When I read that Judah thought it was fine for him to pay a woman for sex, but terrible for Tamar to be paid by a man for sex, it reminded me of how those in power and positions of privilege often allow for themselves things they deny to others. We live in a cis-normative and heteronormative society and gender-affirming healthcare is easily accessible for those in the majority. Meanwhile, the same health treatments for a queer person are tightly controlled and difficult to access. Estrogen is readily available to cis women as a hormonal contraceptive from their doctor, yet extremely hard to get hold of for trans women, who must go through a specialist gender clinic and a psychiatric assessment to access the same drug.

Most trans healthcare is actually cis healthcare. Very few of the speech and language therapists, laser hair-removal specialists, or surgeons constructing penises for trans men, originally trained to offer their services to trans people. Their services were for cis people first, and then adapted for trans people.

Cis people would be very upset if the government severely limited or outlawed their access to these treatments. Why are they upset that queer people receive gender-affirming healthcare? Perhaps it’s not the healthcare that they have a problem with, but it's about their own discomfort with queer people.

Just as Judah didn't have an issue with sex outside of marriage for himself but was ready to kill Tamar for essentially the same thing, many people in our society are ready to shame, bully, outlaw and even cause the death of queer people for accessing treatments available to everyone else.

Another queer application for queer Mormons is we can relate to growing up being promised that we would be married and have a family, but then being denied those blessings and reminded of it at every turn.

Like Tamar, queer members have to make families in unconventional ways, and we get shamed and labeled a sinner because of it.

Eventually Tamar’s choices were validated and she was honored to become a foremother of Jesus Christ. One day queer Latter-day Saints will receive the blessings we were promised and be able to stay in the Church. In the meantime, we need to be persistent like Tamar to get the blessings we deserve.

To have some context for this spin-off, let's start Chidi Sai's story with a small introduction:

Chidi Sai Legacy-Watson and Charu Legacy-Watson are part of the Legacy Legacy generation 9, Cirilla's cousins, and the sons of Heidi Legacy-Carter and Kamir Watson.

Émile Legacy-Nereo is one of the gen 5 spares, Estela's younger brother (alongside with his twin Elmer) and son of Destan Legacy (the gen 4 heir) and Acheloo Nereo. He is also the only human in that family (the others are mermaids).

He is evil and only loves his cats, he tried to engage in woohoo activities once with the result of an accidental baby called Fatality and now lives his best asexual life in Sulani with his brother and sister-in law while being the villain agency boss.

And, finally, Eva Luna Villareal is a descendant of Max Villareal and she is Poppy Valentine's (Hazz' bandmate and wife, real name Francesca Amapola Villareal) mother.

There was a lot of drama in gen 8 about this so this is a story for another day but one day Chidi Sai came back from work with a notif about her being his workplace rival so I had to include a little scene with her in the story.
