Crimes That Shook Britain (North East)
Tumblr media
John Darwin In March 2002, John Darwin, 51, paddled out to sea in his canoe near his Hartlepool home. He never returned Coastguard rescue teams and police searched for him, but all they found was Darwin's paddle.
Several weeks later, the wreckage of his canoe washed up on a beach. With no body found by April 2003, John Darwin was declared dead. His widow Anne and their two sons grieved. Until December 2007 - when Darwin walked into a police station, claiming to have amnesia.
John Darwin was reunited with his sons and Anne, who'd moved to Panama, was delighted. Only, a pjoto emerged of Anne and John in Panama, together in 2006. The couple had actually faked John's death to claim his £250,000 life insurance.
Both Darwins were jailed for over six years - him for obtaining cash by deception, her for deception and money laundering.

Michael Atherton New Year's Day 2012 - taxi driver Michael Atherton, 42, shot dead his partner Susan McGoldrick, 47, her sister Alison Turnbull, 44, and niece Tanya Turnbull, 24, at his home in Peterlee. He then turned the gun on himself.
His stepdaughter survived after fleeing via a window. It emerged Atherton had a history of domestic violence. He blamed Alison for his arrest in 2008, after a row. When he discovered Susan had gone out with her sister that night, he said there'd be trouble if he saw Alison at his home. He said he'd stay in a hotel.
Yet the women arrived home before he'd left. A row erupted and Atherton got his gun from the car.

Mary Bell On 25 May 1968, the day before her 11th birthday, Mary Bell strangled Martin Brown, 4. His body was found in a derelict house in Newcastle.
Two months later, Mary enlisted a 13-year-old friend to help strangle Brian Howe, 3. His mutilated body was found on waste ground. When detectives questioned local children, Mary and her friend acted strangely, their stories changing. Officers soon realised Mary was a killer.
The friend was acquitted and gave evidence against Mary. The court heard Mary committed the crimes 'for the pleasure and excitement of killing'. Mary Bell was convicted of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. She was sentenced to life in detention, released aged 23, and given a new identity.

Raoul Moat Two days after being released from prison on 3 July 2010, Raoul Moat, 37, from Newcastle, went on the rampage with a sawn-off shotgun.
First he shot his ex Samantha Stobbart and her new partner Chris Brown. While on the run in Rothbury, Moat shot police officer David Rathboand in the face. Brown was killed, Stobbart injured and PC Rathboand blinded.
Police deployed armed officers in one of Britain's biggest manhunts. In a letter left with a friend, Moat declared war on officers, saying that he wouldn't stop 'until I am dead'. On 9 July, police tracked Moat to the river Coquet, leading to a stand-off. Police negotiated, but Moat shot himself the next morning.
Sadly, David Rathboand later took his own life.

Billy Dunlop - Double Jeopardy Pizza delivery girl Julie Hogg, 22, disappeared in November 1989. Eighty days later, her mother Ann found her decomposing, partially mutilated body behind a bath panel in Ann's Billingham home.
Julie's ex Billy Dunlop was charged with murder, yet juries at two trials failed to reach a verdict. He was cleared. The double jeopardy law (which meant Dunlop could not be tried again) meant he thought he'd got away with murder for 17 years.
Ann fought for double jeopardy laws to be scrapped and, in 2003. MPs backed changes allowing serious cases with compelling new evidence to be reopened. Dunlop pleaded guilty to murder in 2006, was jailed for life.

Gary Vinter = Freed to Kill Again Gary Vinter killed colleague Carl Edon, 22, in a railway workers' cabin in 1995. Vinter stabbed him 37 times, puncturing every organ. He was jailed for life, but released in 2006, after serving 10 years.
In July 2006, he married Anne White. But Vinter was recalled to prison after a New Year pub brawl. Released again in early 2008, he separated from Anne after attacking her at their home in Eston, Middlesbrough. That February, Vinter bundled his estranged wife into a car.
After holding her hostage at his mother's house, he stabbed Anne to death. He was jailed for life. In 2011, Vinter attacked Roy Whiting - killer of schoolgirl Sarah Payne - in jail.
In 2016, he received a third life sentence for trying to murder fellow 'life' Lee Newell behind bars.

1st - 8th July: Northumberland
Many months ago, before chemo, we'd booked a week in a cottage near Rothbury in this beautiful part of the world. Five sessions of chemo later and struggling with the recovery phase we were unsure as to exactly how we would manage. Bill had little energy, tired easily and could not walk very far. However, we travelled north, via Raby Castle where, sitting in the temporary Yurt café as the rain poured down, we winged off a letter to the Guardian extolling the merits of Soulmates through which we had met 11 years ago.

What other festivals does everyone have planned for the rest of the year?
For me, I'll be at north coast and riot fest (both in chicago). It kills me to be missing lost lands, but riot fest is closer to home and cheaper

Year of the Dog - Bedlington Terrier “It is claimed that the Bedlington can boast a longer traceable pedigree than any other terrier and once was known as the Rothbury Terrier, hailing from the former mining areas of the north of England. Their fame spread outside their native region and an association was started for the breed in 1877. Although their expression is mild they are quite capable of fending for themselves, but will not seek a scrap. They are tough little dogs, this unique breed has a lamb-like look about it, but is a terrier through and through. As a North Country dog, originally their role was to catch rabbits for the family pot. - FCI-Standard N° 9”

Bedlington Terrier
The Bedlington Terrier is a breed of small dog named after the mining town of Bedlington, Northumberland in North East England. Originally bred to hunt vermin in mines, the Bedlington Terrier has since been used in dog racing, numerous dog sports, as well as in conformation shows and as a companion dog. Originally known as the Rothbury or Rodbury Terrier, the name Bedlington Terrier was not applied to the breed until 1825, but some dogs have pedigrees that can be traced back as far as 1782.
Bred in the village of Bedlington in Northumberland, the Bedlington Terrier has been described as "the favourite companion of the northern miners". They were originally known as Rodbury Terriers, Rothbury Terriers, or "Rothbury's Lambs", because the Lord of Rothbury had taken a particular liking to the dogs. Before this, they were known as "gypsy dogs", as gypsies and poachers used them to hunt. They were also valued by their owners as rabbit coursing dogs and racing dogs.
The Bedlington Terrier has been described as resembling a lamb. The dogs have blue, liver or sandy coloration, all three of which may have tan points. Bedlingtons carry what is known as the greying gene, a dominant trait that causes puppies born with black or dark brown fur to lighten to grey or liver with age. The fur of the Bedlington creates a shape on the top of the dog's head known as a topknot.
The dog's coat has been described as shaggy, hard, and rugged in style and it has also been described as linty in texture, giving the breed the nickname of "linty-haired terrier". Its coat is made up of a combination of hard and soft hairs. Dogs in what is referred to as show clip, or groomed for the show ring, cannot have fur that stands out more than 1 inch from their body, and the coat must have a "crisp" texture. If grooming is not performed regularly, the coat's condition rapidly deteriorates. For that reason, most Bedlingtons that are kept strictly as pets keep a lower maintenance "pet groom" style.
Bedlingtons are sharp and plucky. Their bark has been called hound-like and has been compared to the firing of a machine gun. Fast dogs with high endurance, the Bedlington Terrier is just as quick in water as it is on land, and their swimming speed rivals that of the Newfoundland. Bedlington Terriers "have pace enough to keep up with the ordinary speed of a horse." Because of the Whippet in their lineage, they have a tendency to bolt.
They are also known for their intelligence and tenacity when it comes to taking on vermin. Bedlingtons are quite fond of fighting, and are prone to jealousy when around other dogs. One man stated that "this dog was about fit to kill any other dog of his weight" However, both the AKC and the ASPCA call the breed "mild" and "gentle" and recommends it as being good with children. PetFinder says the breed is soft in temperament, companionable, demonstrative, loyal, and a quiet housedog. Playful and cheerful, the breed can be high-strung and excitable, and is prone to being headstrong.

Hunter Valley Cabins With Spa
Hunter Valley or just Hunter is a region in the north of Sydney, spreading inland from the coastal town of Newcastle. This region is split into two parts - Lower Hunter and Upper Hunter. While the former occupies the majority of the wineries, the latter is home to some popular vineyards and other industries. Additionally, when talking about the Lower Hunter, places like the Wollombi Valley, Cessnock, Pokolbin, Rothbury, and Lovedale come under other major tourist attractions. The entire region of Hunter Valley is named after its main river Hunter River.
If you would ask anyone why the Hunter region is so popular and renowned, it's because of its numerous award-winning wines that have been produced here since the 1800s. Whether the visit is for business purposes or as a family vacay trip, you'd visit Hunter Valley that's on the outskirts of the city. Plus, you don't need to worry about accommodations as the Valley houses some of the best accommodations with spas to suit your budget.
Therefore, just come to the Valley for a well-deserved rest. The valley has several 5 and 4-star resorts, hotels, and you can't miss the iconic Hunter Valley cabins with spas either. No matter which accommodation you choose, all luxurious amenities like a swimming pool, spas, tennis court, gym, Golf court, and many other entertaining services will always accompany you. Furthermore, all the top accommodations in Hunter Valley are sophisticatedly designed to suit your taste and comfort.
Another good thing about the valley is that you can visit it during any season and it'll always excite you to the fullest. However, we would recommend a short visit during the summers as it's also the main wine harvesting season. Hence, you can closely experience how the wine-making process begins, etc. During the autumn season, watch how the colors change and enjoy the region’s premium relaxing place. Along with the best accommodation in Hunter Valley, you also get a good transportation network to travel around the region and get a glimpse of the popular wineries, craft breweries, restaurants, and other popular places.
With all being said, you might wonder how to book your accommodation without hassles. So, for this, there are several websites where you can book the best accommodations in Hunter Valley, however, we'd recommend you book from the Hunter Valley Escapes.
Why book through Hunter Valley Escapes?

BT gets go-ahead for £12bn full-fibre roll-out
Telecoms regulator Ofcom has given BT the go-ahead to charge customers more to help fund an ambitious £12bn superfast fibre investment plan.
Nine contractors have already been lined up to deliver infrastructure for ultrafast broadband which BT chief executive Philip Jansen said Openreach would now “get on and build like fury”.
New contractor Openreach full-fibre regions Telent MTS KN Circet MJ Quinn’s Instalcom Folsehill Lancaster Hemel Hempstead Leyland Balham Willowcroft Sheffield Aberdeen Woodley Kidbrooke Newcastle Un Lyme Donaldson Douglas Ellesmere Port Walsall Ayr Giffnock Huyton Wednesbury Laindon Loughton Barry Newcastle Central Gillingham Orpington Newport Castleford Worthing Central Paignton Milnsbridge Molesey St Peters Crownhill JHG Kelly’s NMCN Kier Northampton Hove Arnold Swindon Bedford
BT’s Fibre To The Premises plan will connect to 20 million homes to superfast broadband by the mid- to late-2020s.
Jansen added: “This is good news for all fibre providers in the UK. For us, it is the greenlight we’ve been waiting for.”
Tumblr media
Clive Selley, CEO, Openreach said: “We’ve now passed almost 4.5 million premises and are building faster, at lower cost and higher quality than anyone else in the UK.
“Today’s regulation will allow us to ramp up to 3 million premises per year providing vital next generation connectivity for homes and business right across the UK”.
The Ofcom decision comes as the Government released further details of its £5bn Project Gigabit plan to connect one million hard to reach homes and businesses with superfast broadband.
Tumblr media
Up to 510,000 homes and businesses in Cambridgeshire, Cornwall, Cumbria, Dorset, Durham, Essex, Northumberland, South Tyneside and Tees Valley will be the first to benefit.
Contracts for these first areas will go to tender in the spring with spades in the ground in the first half of 2022.
In June, the government expects to announce the next procurements to connect up to 640,000 premises in Norfolk, Shropshire, Suffolk, Worcestershire, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
Tumblr media
Digital Secretary Oliver Dowden said: “Project Gigabit is our national mission to plug in and power up every corner of the UK and get us gigafit for the future.
We have already made rapid progress, with almost 40% of homes and businesses now able to access next-generation gigabit speeds, compared to just 9% in 2019.
“Now we are setting out our plans to invest £5bn in remote and rural areas so that no one is left behind by the connectivity revolution.”
First Project Gigabit procurements areas
