Have I known you 20 seconds, or 20 years?

My one year anniversary with Dr. Norman Osborn and Dr. Otto Octavius is TODAY (January 3rd.) THIS IS NOT A DRILL!

I went to the theatre to see No Way Home on my day off from work on a WHIM. I can’t believe I almost didn’t go. I also can’t believe that seeing Norman and Otto on the big screen for the first time since I was a kid was enough to absolutely launch me into an insufferable amount of love for these two old men. They saved me, not to be dramatic or anything.

In our main universe, we met just as sporadically. Norman had one strawberry daiquiri too many and bounced over to compliment my clothes when I was getting overwhelmed at the club XD Thank you to my and Norman’s impulsiveness! (And thank you to Otto for swooping in to calm me down and let me sit with you two.)

Rosie is creeping in there too. In my original ship universe she wasn’t there but I’ve been creating a little multiverse of my own and on the anniversary of Otto and Norman slamming me in the heart I’ll be adding her officially to my F/O list!! <3 I love you Rosie!!

I’m gonna have a little party irl <3 I might make a cake or something. Otto is the one who bakes in the relationship but I’m sure I can figure something out!

Norman and Otto, I will love you until forever. I can’t believe it hasn’t been 20 years already but I also can’t believe how fast this year has flown by. You two are amazing and I will forever be so grateful I tagged along to the movie theatre. One year later I am still head over heels!!!

Right. I'm in the rambling mood. So this post is probably going to be a whole load of nonsense, but fuck it I ball. I'm boutta yap to everyone about why I think Norman Osborn is a villain I can't sympathise with.

Let's start this by talking about villains I CAN sympathise with; Otto and Flint. I can sympathise with the other two because they have stories that make me feel empathetic. Flint wants to help his sick daughter, even if it's through illegal means. Otto had effectively a perfect life; a stable career and a loving wife, and he was doing what he enjoyed. When he loses it, it's bound to cause some empathy. Yes, his ambition is the cause of it all, but regardless, he lost practically everything.

With Norman, there's none of this. I don't feel any sort of sympathy. NWH's portrayal of him just makes it seem like his actions aren't his fault. In the Raimi Trilogy, the opposite is true. Norman wants the control, the power, but to accomplish that, he would taint his image. He doesn't want to taint his image because that would simply cause more problems. The serum simply just removed his inhibitions. Having had his inhibitions removed through the Goblin, he can do the things he wanted to do but without tainting his image. Norman lost nothing to achieve his goals.

But then you wonder, "Why didn't the same happen to Harry?"

It's because Harry had one goal in mind; kill Spider-man. He didn't want to harm anyone else, just him. Norman didn't care who he hurt, whereas Harry only wanted to harm Peter/Spidey.

Besides this, Norman was generally a bad father, too. That helps us sympathise much less.

Anyways, thanks for listening to me ramble, I had to get my thoughts out before I don't get any sleep ;-;

As much as I love Peter 2 being like the supportive older brother when he said Peter 3 was amazing and being proud of Peter 1 about being in the Avengers even tho he had no idea what that was and how people are like 'Either Peter 2 is the other Peters therapist or he will send them himself to one' I just feel like he needs the therapy too

Didn't you just say- Peter 2: Besides it's not as bad as you guys, I mean, we all went through the Uncle Ben thing tho I did end up killing the guy that killed my Uncle Ben on accident- Peter 3: You what!?! Peter 2: -and, remember Osborn? Yeah, so- (trauma dumping the entire 3 Spider-Man movies)-Harry died taking a stab for me but still it's no where near as bad as your problems Peter 1: ... oh my god Peter 3: ... I'm taking you to therapy

Ok. Everyone sit down and bear with me. Come sit. Amazing Spider-Man issue 29. Why does this comic actually have GOOD CONCEPTS IN IT??? HELLO??? Why is this writing pretty decent and why am I excited to see where this is going HOLY FUCK

But yeah, some context and a sort of review for this:

Yeah the spidey comics have been ranging from either lackluster or bad for a while, (with the exception on miles' comics, which have been really good and miles deserves it so :]]) but yeah the mainline comics have been really weird for me, especially with the Paul stuff

BUT now that the Paul stuff has been moved away from there seems to be a slight growth in quality, at least I hope so

ANYWAYS ANYWAYS

Superior Spideys consciousness is trapped within the octo arms, everyone knows that by now I think and while they're probably not letting him out until a while later holy fuck I am genuinely excited for what they do here

Acknowledging that Otto remembers how Gobby really fucked him over during superior vol 1 and showing he's still pissed? GOOD. (Not perfect with Ocks plan not making too much sense. But still good)

Acknowledging how Doc Ocks character development got reversed so he now has a hole in his memories and he's kinda confused on what he's doing? LOVELY.

Peter seemingly getting affected by Superior's memories when he puts on the octo arms so he remembers things Superior knows? BEAUTIFUL, LOVELY CONCEPT. It's a literal role reversal of the first superior volume! Thats honestly cool (I hope they take this a step further, maybe have Pete outright hear Otto when he puts the arms on so he has a way to communicate)

The writing for this issue on its own isn't outstanding, but I'm still finding myself hyped for the next one, I'm excited to see what they do with Peter fighting Doc Ock and dealing with Norman going gobby mode not by choice this time and OHHH MAN I cannot wait for them to give Superior an out from the arms, hopefully a clone body

Can't wait to see that doc ock VS doc ock fight (only one of them has character development)

GOBLIN'S RELATIONSHIPS IN MY AU

I feel like I should give a warning but…don’t really know what to warn for? I guess just codependency & generally unhealthy relationships? idk Goblin is a traumatized former villain. What do you think her relationships are like. I didn’t list all the characters in my AU, but if you want to know what their relationship with Goblin is like/how they interact lmk. 

I do want to mention that everyone is in therapy & coping with their issues in a (mostly) healthy way.

Norman

THE SIBLINGS EVER. BUT ALSO…

I call them siblings a lot, which is absolutely true, but tbh they’re like. Twins. Technically. They were twins and then Goblin stopped aging for a bit. They’re best friends but also horribly codependent on the other in only the way sharing the same body your entire life would make you. They are so sssooo used to each other, Norman has difficulty setting boundaries with Goblin because (1) they shared a body. there is nothing there that Goblin has not seen or even used herself. (2) they’re used to each other being around 24/7, even if Goblin wasn’t co-fronting/near the front, Norman still knew she was there, really only a call away. and on some level it was a comfort to know he was never fully alone. and he STILL seeks out her comfort, which Goblin relishes in and absolutely takes advantage of. 

Goblin absolutely adores Norman, thinks he’s the best thing since sliced bread. Incredibly over protective & possessive of him, at first trying to convince him to ruin all of his relationships so she’d have him to himself. Of course, that doesn’t work, and Goblin comes to realize that the more people who care about Norman/are in his life, the happier he is. She will do literally anything for Norman if it meant making him happy. Anything. To an unhealthy degree. She can, will, and has ignored her own needs/wants in favor of Norman — whether to protect him or make him happy or if it’s simply what she thinks he wants her to do. He was her whole life & reason for living for 17 whole years. Excuse her if she wants him to read her a bedtime story once in a while. 

tldr: siblings but in the worst way possible

Otto

Goblin hated Otto at first. She did not like the fact that he was now married to Norman, and was now the “most important” person in Norman’s life, a title Goblin felt belonged to her. She was also deathly scared of the actuators, having no experience with them other than when they fought her. So, naturally, she thinks that Otto will lose control and hurt Norman. Or is just with him for his money. Or both. And so she thinks she’s protecting Norman by being mean to Otto — he was going to leave anyway, might as well lower those attachment levels! But obviously this isn’t true at all, Otto loves Norman and wants him to be happy. The actuators are also pretty curious about Goblin, which she unfortunately reads as hostility. Otto eventually manages to calm Goblin down slightly by pointing out Norman would probably be happier if they got along better (and also explained that the actuators were basically curious toddlers lol). Over time Goblin accepts that more than one person can make Norman happy, and even comes to enjoy hanging out with Otto and play-wrestling with the actuators. Shoutout to Otto, man has the patience of a saint I swear. 

Harry

Siblings but. 👀 Both were very argumentative at first, being passive aggressive and just straight up insulting each other, much to Norman’s dismay. Main reason is that they both want Norman’s attention, but think they’re the only one deserving of it (not so much on Harry’s end, but he does have Daddy Issues). Norman tends to favor Harry, trying to make up for his past treatment and repair the relationship between them. Whereas Goblin sees Harry as an ungrateful brat. He hated Norman, and now he wants his love? Unbelievable! 

But thanks to therapy, Harry realizes that the two have more in common than realized: being forced to live in Norman’s shadow. So he makes the decision to try and be nice to Goblin, see where she’s coming from. And also because no matter his feelings towards his father, he truly doesn’t like how quickly Norman will disregard Goblin when it comes to him. They like to complain and make fun of Norman together <3

Peter

Raimi/Tobey: Likes Goblin! Thinks she’s great. The most used to her outside of Norman & Otto. Also she’s technically his sidekick??? I mentioned Goblin is a hero, but she’s mostly regarded as a sidekick of either Spiderman or Doc Ock. It totally doesn’t piss her off. They also like to spar/fight/train together because neither have to worry about severely hurting the other (super strength + advanced healing combo). Typically invites her out to things with Andrew & Tom if they’re cool with it. 

Amazing/Andrew: That's his little sister and if you try to say otherwise he will gaslight you into thinking it’s true. Was largely neutral on Goblin as unlike Tobey & Tom. he didn’t really have a connection to her outside of another villain that needed to be defeated. So really, he was curious about Goblin when she gained her own body, and went out of his way to hang out with her. 

MCU/Tom: Tentative. Like Tobey, he acknowledges that Goblin was under the influence of the serum. Unfortunately, that doesn’t unto the bad shit she did, and he still resents her for it. Not as bad as Harry in terms of picking arguments, mainly because he doesn’t want to or like stressing Otto out. Goblin has apologized to him, as she’s done with everyone, but also respects that lines were crossed, even if they weren’t 100% her fault. They only interact in group settings and have minimal contact. They’re cordial, but that’s about it, y’know?

ASM ISSUE 30. I HAVE OPINIONS. SIT DOWN.

I told you I was gonna review any issues that are vaguely superior spidey related and that includes this one. And this one was certainly intriguing! Intresting ideas, the issues it has just stem from the entire run itself sooooo

So here we goo- superior spidey (but like the bootleg)

So here's the things I do like:

Superiors memories, or whatever echo of them are in the arms do affect Peter and while it was brief it was pretty fun. I like how Peter's posture shifts to look like Superiors (in like one panel but shhhh)

Otto and Peter (bootleg superior edtion) bickering was kinda fun to see hshdhsh Thats a concept I kinda love hehsh,.z.

The arms try to sacrifice themselves for Peter in one panel. Me when sad character growth,.,. Nice to see them technically working together tho

It's pretty much confirmed now that superior is in those arms, probably just an echo of his memories, but it could also literally be him because of how aware the arms are and that's a bit freaky and now I feel bad

The implications behind whatever was left of superior in the arms trying to literally strangle doc ock, that's harrowing in context but a intresting concept they could use because man is gonna need some SERIOUS therapy when he gets out

Also also I love that the arms punch Norman every chance they get 100% the most superior spiderman thing they would do

Things I'm a bit iffy on:

Kinda weird that everyone still kinda treats the arms as pets. I mean Jameson does at least. I know we don't know for sure how the arms work with like, Doc's memories but if he is like, aware and sentient in there OOO MAN that makes this so much weirder. Free my boy and don't treat him like that

How the fuck does Peter not suspect somethings up with the arms seemingly containing a separate consciousness. Bro hasn't even really investigated them yet

All my other complaints aren't for this issue but rather complaints for the entire Zeb Wells run itself like Doc Ock back to being an evil goofy villain that needs to get beat up again (like can we not, he doesn't need that anymore) and also on a 10x worse note, reminding me that Zeb Wells killed Ms. Marvel for no reason. I know she'll be back alive soon ut she didn't have do die the way she did 4 issues ago and Aughhhh I cannot get into that rn do not start with me

But yeah those things aren't exactly complaints with this issue so YIPPEE MOVING ON

Yeah the only other thing I'll mention is what I talked about in my last couple of posts is that I'm a bit worried on how they are bringing superior back into the present without using time travel or clones (because giving the title back to og doc ock seems a bit out of the question cuz hes still evil for some reason ((I'll rant again if I go into that more)) but unfortunately that seems like it's the case rn)

It might not be that big an issue, I'll still read the new series when it comes out, but I'm just really hoping that they do him right. STILL EXCITED FOR OCTOBER THO YIPPEE NEW FOOD AND CONTENT LETS JUST HOPE ITS GOOD <3<3

Also apparently the next issue is gonna have a teaser for the next superior book, so I'll be sure to post about that :]
