“Compresi molti anni fa quanto il lavorio misterioso del “meccanismo della specificità”, indicato da Weiss [Paul Alfred Weiss, biologo, 1898 - 1989], sia necessario nella costruzione della “organizzazione” o della totalità del sistema vivente al suo livello più complesso. Avvenne quando Dan Stern [Daniel Norman Stern, psichiatra e psicoanalista ed esponente della Infant Research] mi offrì l’opportunità di riesaminare, immagine per immagine, alcuni filmati di neonati che avevamo girato per il nostro studio longitudinale [studio realizzato allo scopo di misurare la variazione di alcuni fattori negli stessi soggetti per un periodo di tempo più o meno lungo]. La scena in questione riguardava dei filmati di breve durata ripresi dalla nostra équipe durante una visita a domicilio fatta ad una delle nostre neonate all’ottavo giorno di vita e tre giorni dopo che la madre e la piccola erano ritornate a casa dall’ospedale (1958). Un operatore del nostro gruppo di ricerca parlava con il padre nel giardino. La madre gli stava vicina tenendo in braccio la bambina e parlando con il responsabile del gruppo. A un certo punto, la bambina iniziò ad agitarsi. La madre cercò di calmarla, ma invano e, allora, sentendosi un po’ imbarazzata dalla presenza del responsabile, decise di servire il rinfresco. Diede la bambina al padre, che stava in piedi li vicino parlando con un ricercatore, e rientrò in casa. I successivi due o tre minuti del filmato mostrano il padre mentre tiene la bambina con il braccio sinistro continuando a parlare con il ricercatore e poi la bambina che si addormente mentre loro continuano a parlare. Questo è tutto ciò che si vede nel film proiettato alla normale velocità di trenta fotogrammi al secondo. Proiettando, invece, la stessa scena fotogramma dopo fotogramma, si vede il padre dare di sfuggita un’occhiata al volto della bambina, mentre, strano a dirsi, anche la bambina guarda il volto del padre. Poi, il braccio sinistro della bambina, che era appoggiato sul braccio sinistro del padre, inizia a muoversi verso l’alto. Quindi la mano della bambina e la mano del padre si muovono verso l’alto nello stesso istante. Infine, proprio quando si incontrano sul pancino della bambina, la mano sinistra della bambina afferra il mignolo della mano destra del padre. In quel preciso istante gli occhi della neonata si chiudono e si addormente, mentre il padre continua a parlare, apparentemente senza accorgersi del piccolo miracolo di specificità di tempo, luogo e movimento che è avvenuto tra le sue braccia”.

Secondo Paul Weiss la “specificità” (the device of specificity) è “una sorta di risonanza tra due sistemi sintonizzati reciprocamente su proprietà corrispondenti”.

I have to get something off of my chest.

I am really sick and tired of the hypocrisy of the Pro-Isreal camp.

Now, Harvard President Claudine Gay is being accused of 40 counts of plagiarism.

Seriously?!

Why didn't these allegations come up before this whole protest scandal?

Ms. Gay was defending free speech for the protestors. Disgusting free speech, but free speech nonetheless.

Free speech needs to be defended, even for individuals such as Richard Spencer and Donald Trump.

The ACLU would tell you that.

A student should not be punished for saying something disgusting, they should be punished if they have made threats to anyone, or called an individual or individuals nasty things.

There was a student at Cornell who sent threats to Jewish individuals and was promptly expelled and arrested, as he should have been.

There was another student back in the 1990s who assaulted a black student on campus. He was expelled, as he should have been.

Their conduct went beyond free speech, and that is what these college presidents were talking about.

Have we suddenly forgotten what free speech is?

These "allegations" feel like a bullshit hit job to me.

But, we shall see.

But before I go, I need to ask a question.

When has any Pro-Isreal individual condemn Anti-Muslim sentiment anywhere, including on college campuses?

Anti-Muslim sentiment is only being challenged now because there are a lot more Muslims in this country than there were back in the day, so it's not so easy to get away with it now.

Writer Bari Weiss tried to get an Arab professor fired because of his Pro-Palestine stance back when she was a student at Columbia.

Norman Finkelstein, who is a scholar of Jewish origin, has been hounded and harassed to the point where he can't get work at any school because of his Pro-Palestinian stance. This has been going on for years.

Yet, no one bats an eye on those two cases.

Why is Medhi Hasan losing his show on MSNBC?

I'm telling you, this is a hit job.

Now, I personally have a complicated relationship with free speech.

I recognize its importance even though you will never see me marching out in the street for it, because I will not put myself out there for the likes of Richard Spencer or Farrakhan though I will not fight against it either because it would mean endangering my right to free speech and those who I agree with.

We need to remember what free speech is, or we are going to get ourselves in big trouble.

And I'm seeing that trouble happening now.

We should be afraid.

Very much so.

The other reason why these presidents are being targeted is because of wealthy donors being upset over the pro-Palestine sentiment of the protestors.

Money muscling its way into free speech.

This should get you worried, because what's happening to these college presidents is what's going to happen on a more regular basis where free speech is concerned.

If a donor is offended by a president's stance, then you simply pull out your funds. You do not get the government involved where they bully people, and those female presidents were being bullied-by congress and the donors using government might.

Make no mistake about it.

Your right to put your money where you mouth is should be your right.

Silencing free speech should not be anyone's right.

Very dear Luis, A few lines, to tell you how excited I was to go and see The Golden Age at the Palais de Chaillot a few days ago. There wasn’t enough room for everyone; there were three long queues four people deep: tall, young and all there to demonstrate that they could, and would be intellectually free and ethically responsible spectators, and that they wouldn’t be treated like morons or children. Yes, that screening of your great film, Luis, became a tacit, enthusiastic and ironic demonstration in favour of artistic freedom just as the Gaullist censors were banning The Nun. But also, importantly: those young people identified completely with The Golden Age, with the imagery and meaning, the wonderful currency of Buñuel’s art; your films are now finding their new and true audience: these young people, for whom surrealism’s great insight – that playfulness and ethics together can be explosive, revolutionary – has now become today’s direct answer to the failure of life and art. They are setting themselves apart from the kind of art that is either just about form, pure, gratuitous style; or just about ideology, committed and ideological morality in the very worst sense of the words. I’m going to write something about this for Siempre;! The Golden Age impressed me more than ever. I have been watching signs of the révolte going on throughout this trip, in the United States with popular singers like Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, writers like Norman Mailer and cartoonists like Feiffer, in German theatre with Peter Weiss’s Marat/Sade, in the whole anti-establishment movement in England, in Bellocchio’s new Italian cinema, and suddenly, after watching The Golden Age again, I’ve become aware of a real sense of unity, power and the potential for non-conformism right now: a potential way of living that is complete and revolutionary, that won’t degenerate into different approaches (playful or ethical), but that binds them in a kind of total humanity, a continual moving-forward of experience and conscience. I was moved, Luis, and I wanted to write to you as soon as possible to tell you, and to thank you, just as those young people who crowded into the Cinémathèque were thanking you.

I talked about you a lot with Octavio Paz when he was in Rome; and now, in Paris, with Vargas Llosa, Cortázar, Rodríguez Monegal, Gironella; we’re always discussing you and your work that we increasingly believe is the great point of reference for, and development of, writers and painters of Spanish descent. I’m going to Madrid with Gironella sometime in the middle of May; we want to write a book together about the deaths of the kings: Felipe II and Carlos the Cursed. As for me, I’ve handed in my new novel, Cambio de piel, to be translated in New York, and I’m now finishing Zona sagrada, it’s a novel about metamorphosis, about a film star and her son (who are really Circe and Telegonus, Ulysses’s forgotten son). I based it on the María-Quique relationship, but very different of course, and much elaborated; it’s not at all biographical.

Filming of Aura in Rome has finished. I haven’t seen the results yet, and I imagine they’ve had to make a lot of changes to stretch it to an hour and a half. The sets were wonderful though, as were Damiano Damiani’s intentions. Bini, the producer, is both intelligent and willing to take risks (he produced Pasolini’s films, Il vangelo secondo Matteo, etc.), he’s also interested in doing something with Mexico.

I was sad to read in Le Monde that production has stopped on The Monk. I can understand it, looking at the disgraceful treatment of La Religieuse. What can be done? If you want me to talk to Bini, let me know. Of course, there is the Vatican, but Bini managed to make and release La mandragola without cuts; he might be interested in filming it in Mexico, etc.

I found a beautiful little flat on the Rue du Cherche-Midi, on the corner of the Rue de l’Abbé Grégoire, near the Boulevard Raspail. I find it very easy to work in this city, stimulated by the theatres, exhibitions, and a daily film at the Rue Champollion, where people are now queuing up to see The Young One.
